Woodturning | A Mystery Burl?

- Hello, friends! There will be no resin in today's video, but I think the final product is still something to see! A few months back, a family friend sent me some burls they found on their property while removing some trees. I never did end up finding out what trees they came from, and, as someone who still considers themselves to be a novice at this, I had absolutely no idea what they were. Not only had I never turned a burl before, but I also had no clue what kind of burl I was even working with. However, on the very first pass of the lathe, and as the outer bark came flying off, the strong smell of pine immediately gave it away!
At first, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to finish this project. Although I have turned pine in the past on rare occasions, I've heard from numerous woodturners and read multiple articles advising people to stay away from it. Because of how soft the wood is, it tends to just tear out, and the sap coming out of the wood can also make sanding difficult. Regardless, I decided to press on, and while I certainly did suffer my fair share of tear out, I had absolutely zero problems with sanding, which took care of all my tear out spots.
I know pine isn't everyone's cup of tea (it being construction wood and all), but in the right circumstances, I personally love it, and I love how these two bowls came out. The second one in particular, with the branches running through it, really caught my eye, and I'd be more than happy to work with these pine burls again in the future!

The grain of the burl is absolutely stunning!
Incredible grain on those, just beautiful.
That’s a labour of love! A beautiful one!!
Hello….So I read your comment-no resin, not sure what tree the burl came from, found out it’s pine, but it sounds like it could be tricky, you continue anyway….and you still managed to create 2 beauties….great effort, outstanding results!👌👌👏👏😁😁
Thank you, Frann!
These turned out absolutely amazing! The wood has so much character and blends in so many variations of colors! You turned them perfectly for everyone to see the beauty in these pieces! That Waterlox finish leaves these bowls looking so stunning! Fantastic work sir!
Love the grain!
My brother gave me a burl a while back and said I should make a kukea out of it. When I opened the box, he started laughing. It's a hickory burl. I've held rocks that didn't feel as solid as this thing. One of these days it will come out of the box. I've got to save up some energy for sharpening. Those bowls look good.
That sounds daunting!! Best of luck once you saved up the energy!! :D
Excellent use of that burl, two bowls out of the one piece ... beautiful 👍
Thank you, Barry!
Absolutely love these two bowls! Gorgeous grain!
Thank you, Peggy!
Fantastic work! Loved the mystery of this one!!
Thanks, Rob!
¡Que belleza ver madera clara, una linda veta y un moldeado clásico, sin resinas de colores! Reconozco que las resinas permiten lograr colores e inclusiones atractivas, pero sigo siendo fiel a la madre naturaleza y la madera.
Love seeing the grain beautiful..
Very nice work they both look really good
Very very beautiful, I love how burls turn out.
Thank you, Richard!
All of your work is beautiful but the burl is extra special.

Nice and simple is the best🙂🙂🙂
Yep, sometimes you just need a big chunk of wood and nothing else! :)
Big like!👍👍👍👍👍✅💪Felicitări! Great video 👍👍👍😎
Thank you, Gabi!
This was a little titillating for a few seconds
Nice work but you had two perfect handles in place. Opportunity lost.
It's a Burl Bowel.
Eikö pahka ole usein puuta tiheämpää ja kovempaa ainesta työstää 🤔
I'd say that's Ash.
Don't bother if you're not going to add a voice over.
