Woodturning a walnut Rimmed Bowl
Просмотров 8802 месяца назад
I recently made a bowl similar to this bowl. However it had epoxy all the way to the rim. So on this bowl I wanted a wood rim. I added a flat piece of walnut to become the rim. There was a little epoxy showing on the rim, but I think it adds to the unique look of this bowl. I just had a 3 day arts and crafts show where I was able to highlight these 2 pieces in this event. I couldn’t believe how...

Woodturning-it’s what’s inside that counts.
Просмотров 8713 месяца назад
Manzanita Burl that was burned in a fire we had some time ago. Hard to say if this guy was burned a couple years ago or 50 years ago. They don’t rot. Just sit there for many years. When they wash up on our beach I pick them up and take them home for a future project. You never know what might be inside of a Burl. You just have to start turning and hopefully find a beautiful bowl.
Woodturning- Star Pine (Norfolk Island Pine)

Woodturning a piece of Spalted Birch,
Просмотров 4184 месяца назад
I cut a Birch tree trunk a few months ago. I just tossed it on the ground and waited until I saw mushrooms. That’s when I was time to start turning. It was almost to Late. It was very punky, soft and easily torn grain. Birch is a very beautiful wood when it spalted. Every time I have a piece, it’s one of the most interesting pieces on my table. Most everyone picks it up and asks asks about it. ...

    Nice job these end grain bowls are tough. I'm working on a 16" Cook Pine bowl that has the same grain pattern as yours. I am using a one way easy core to take out the inside in a big chunk.

    Very nice work Darren. I've been turning since 1978 or 9. I still love the sound of the tools cutting. I watch turning videos from beginning to end at normal speed. My Laguna 1836 stopped like that around 2 months ago. Then it ran just perfectly for a couple of months. Then, it started stopping a couple of times on each project. A few days ago it started randomly slowing down or stopping. Then it stopped and stayed stopped. I hope your PM doesn't do the same thing.

Thank you again

    That is some very interesting wood. I guess the closest thing we have is Osage Orange or some call it hedge. I try to use epoxy sparingly since it's so hard to keep my tools sharp when using it, even carbide. However, good job on the piece 👍👍 I like it 😊

    • @darrenswoodworks8695
      @darrenswoodworks8695 3 месяца назад

      Thanks again James. The part I dislike the most about epoxy is that it’s slow to remove the material if you use beveled carbide. Straight carbide removes it fast but leaves deep chip out. But it does come off fast. As for dulling the tools you are right about that. I use a diamond wheel that I can hold the carbide tip on and resharpen it an about 5 seconds. I just replace them and resharpen when I have a few to do. I shape the beveled carbide right on the tool. I just swing it back and forth. And it’s done. One day I’ll show how I do it. Thank you.
