  • Paperbark Melaleuca limb that was recently removed after it had broken. The tree needed trimming so we took care of that for the client. I found a couple nice pieces of wood that had a really nice color. It started off red then turned a pink after it dried a bit. When I turned I noticed the red started looking a brownish color. I always hope for a reddish colored wood. Can’t always get that.

Here in Australia, you would be getting questions from the authorities for that 😂. Usually, paperbark is protected in Australia, but it's still nice work!

Nice. Melaleuca is considered invasive here, in Florida, and I haven't turned any yet. I expect I can get some.

Wow I never thought of Melaleuca as an invasive species. We don’t get the wet weather you have there. It doesn’t have much a chance to get out of control. I’ve turned a few pieces of different types of melaleuca, all seam to be hard and pretty colors.

I'd be interested in a future update whether the color reddens with age (exposure to air or light). For example, cherry and purpleheart are brown when freshly cut. Purpleheart turns purple fairly fast. Cherry reddens more slowly.

Thank you knot great woodworks. I’ll be glad to update you about the wood. I’m not that familiar with melaleuca and it’s color myself. I never thought much about it until a friend turned a bowl. When it was done I was very surprised as to how beautiful it was. The color was not dark at all. Light tan as best I can remember. But I don’t think it was the same variety as this one.
Thanks again. I’ll try to give you an update

Thank you Ronnie, that’s the plan. I was hoping to find some dried flowers to put in for a picture. Haven’t found any yet. Thank you for watching and commenting.
