  • I have a 12 year old pepper wood bowl blank that was in need of finishing. Someone asked if I had a pepper bowl and I fortunately found one in my blank pile. I have a few more old blanks that are stacked up in the rafters of my garage. I don’t know what’s up there until I go look. So it’s always a surprise when it’s brake the time to dig through them for a project. The wood was very dry and a little difficult when making smooth cuts. But the results were certainly worth waiting for. I don’t do a lot of pepper these days. I felt it was a boring wood to turn. Well this bowl made me realize what I was missing. I will be keeping my eye out for more pepper wood in the future.

12 years old? My oldest un-turned bowl blank is from late 2020 or early 2021… 😂😂
Nice work Darren! I’ve used the same finish and it makes the wood look great!

Thank you Stuart, well back in the day, I didn’t know how to finish a bowl. So I made a lot of green turned bowls. Then I got side tracked and did other things. Thank you for your comment.

Great work and a vey nice bowl. What’s the name of the large black chuck you use towards the end👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Thank you, that Chuck is called a longworth Chuck. It’s awesome. I almost passed it up for 100 bucks at a Woodturner’s garage sale. He also tossed in another vicmarc Chuck and 4” jaw’s required to hold it for another 100 bucks. 200 well spent. I love it for and easy bottom of the bowl finishing. Thanks for your comment.

@@darrenswoodworks8695sounds like you had Lady Luck 🍀 with you that day👍🏻👍🏻 I’ve been reading reviews on the Longworth chuck and it seems the biggest problem people seem to have with them is tightening them on to the bowl but you didn’t have any problems.
How does it preform when you grip the bowl internally?

The problem I’ve had with internal mounting is that the chuck won’t get small enough for the hollow form pieces I’ve made. The one I have is pretty large. So if I have a small opening. Anything smaller than 6” opening won’t work inside.
I don’t know if that is the same on smaller longworth chucks.
As for opening and closing on a bowl, I do wish it had something to grip other than the small finger holes. I have had difficulty closing on a bowl while holding it in place. The wing nots need to be loose enough to spin, and I was wondering if dust might be causing a little more friction. Otherwise I like the ease of remounting a bowl. Thank you and let Me know if there’s anything else I can help with.

Thanks for the advice……….I think I’ll just keep an eye on eBay and see if any second hand ones come up . I do however think these chuck are useful and will save a lot of time I’ve got scroll jaws but just take ages to set up…all the best👍🏻
