    Phil, I have been making my way through your back catalog, and I am thrilled to see you're still turning. You've likely heard it a thousand times, but your channel is great. Your attitude and enthusiasm are infectious. You're the Bob Ross of woodturning. Be well and have a great new year.

    Oh boy did you ever make the right choice on this one Phil! But your well tuned eagle eyes were not going to miss the beauty on the top half. Simply amazing looking Especial the compression grain WOW.
    Hard to improve on what nature left on the top side.
    So cool and I really love it.
    Now to dig through my pile where I know there is a piece of River Birch.
    I am afraid it will have to sit and wait. Hope it is not too long.
    Take care,
    Gary

    Well, that turned so much better than I expected! Beautiful! As you were handling the finished hollow form, I saw a tortoise shell. 🐢🐚 😅
    This piece is from a large (BIG!) branch that broke off the main tree in the ice storm the Pacific Northwest endured 3 years ago. The other half of the round is almost identical, and now I know what to try to make of it! Nicely turned!

      @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I might try a more rounded hollow form with the other half since it's nearly this one's twin, gnarly knot and all. Difference is it's a fair bit thicker than what I sent you, so would be more of a pot. Likely won't get to it before spring, though.

      @@calmwoodcreations3709 If it has the heal-over around a dead limb, using the area inside the heal-over for the opening works really well. It gives the piece a more interesting top, and draws the eye to look inside. And if you don’t, you can always send it to me through Phil. But then, Phil might just be tempted to keep it! 😂

    Nice little bowl Phil, of all the processes involved in our wonderful hobby hollowing out is by far my least favourite, mainly because I'm so bad at it lol. But like everything if we face our fears and persevere we get better and the feeling of dread will be replaced by mild dislike and eventually love. We’re hanging in there. Lots of ups and downs. Logically I know my favorite niece is gone, but emotionally, I don’t believe it. I felt her hug me the night she passed. She knows I’m sensitive to that. We are having her Celebration of Life next month. The day after her 40th birthday. Christmas is very simple this year. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas filled with friends, family and lots of love. Merry Christmas my friend! 🎄🎅🏼 Hugs! 💜✨ Roma 🌲💚🌳 PS. Probably won’t see you till next year, but you never know. 😉

    Hi Phil ! What a j o y to watch this turning. I can't believe it took an hour to get through that knot!
    ...How does one 'sharpen' the 'propeller-edges' (or 'blade edges'?) of a 3-inch drill? (air-force brat lingo oblige)
    We had a huge snow fall, followed by a deluge of a rain storm, so we're back to grassy patches and weirdly placed snowbanks. And now it is cold again. Lake still not frozen over. No ice-fishing for moi, yet.
    We frappe the route in a day from now, to be with one of my Bros. Good road conditions in the forecast. So, there's that.
    May Saint Nick visit your neck of the WOODS and not escond with too many your magnificent art pieces. If I was Santa's helper, you might wake up on Christmas morn to find missing your
    turtle, wooden-shoe, spaceship, bubble-top
    hollowed masterpiece.
    You'd be missing a couple more pieces as well, after our visit down the Shady Acres's household chimney.
    That's fur sure.
    Joyeux Noël, Phil.

    First thing, I hope you have had a great Christmas Phil. I am watching this on Christmas day here after starting Radiation Therapy on my face last Friday (9 more to go). I had a somewhat aggressive skin cancer removed from near my right ear & it had gotten into the nerves, hence the Radiation. As ALWAYS, I think you made ALL the RIGHT choices with this piece because you always take notice of what the wood is suggesting. Hollow form, spot on, choice of thickness, spot on as well. You have made a piece of wood that may have appeared 'ordinary' into an absolute masterpiece. You must have an enormous number of masterpieces stored in & around your home. You should put them on a video one day. Cheers mate & have a great 2024, Don from South Australia.

    Very nice open turning. I agree the compression grain made the piece stand out. Making a hollow form was the right decision, it really turned out great. There was never any doubt!! I was using Old Master sanding sealer, but Zinsser Sanding Sealer far exceeds Old Master. With Old Master cleaning the brushes are a pain in the !!!!!!!. You have to use Acetone solvent to clean up. It is also very thick, With Zinsser you can use Denatured Alcohol. If you need to use a touch up, for a thinner spot just use the brush in the can of cleaner or dip it in the Zinsser Shellac for a thinner cut. I imagine you have done this before but it works for me. KEEP ON TURNING

    Hello Phil, thank you for another delightful and entertaining video. When you were 'asking the viewers' how to turn the piece, and you mentioned hollowing it out, I thought, "Yeah, you could make a wooden jar. That would be unusual and nice." When you asked, what would it be for, I thought, it could hold chessmen, or chequers, or nuts in the shell or wrapped candy. Plus, with the compression grain intact, it looked really good. Just imagine it perched on a coffee table holding something fun.
    With best wishes for a very Merry Christmas.

    Hi Phil.... great bowl (hollowform) . My choice was to open the bowl and see the grain compression. Anyway..I'm impressed...again. I also am curious as to why most turners I see on the tube all apply finish while on the lathe...one side at a time. As I see the situation it leaves the finished side vulnerable to damage. All you have to do is bump it and you can't fix it because it's finished. For myself I never apply finish while on my lathe . I've found that it makes it easier to correct any oppsies that occur. I sand both inside and out to 800 or more, and inspect it for any sanding defaults before applying the finish in my finish room. So if you will enlighten me as to what I'm missing finishing it on the lathe one side at a time. Is it only for video presentation? Thanks Phil and keep making beautiful things. You're a true artist.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks, Gary! 😊 The grain compression would have been turned away if I turned a normal, live edge bowl out of it. I finish the outside before turning the inside because it's the best way for me. There will be no damage because I'm careful. I can't imagine trying to finish a piece sitting on a workbench or wherever. On the lathe, I can rub the finish in and buff it with total, unobstructed access. But, again, that's the way I prefer it. If you prefer another way and it works for you, that's what you should do. I'll bet you get some great pieces using your methods, too!

    Hi Phil good job and a great decision to keep the congested grain. I saw it already at the beginning when you described the piece and thought what you will make out of it. To be honest I expected that you will decide for a thick wall to avoid to cut this nice grain away. Thus I was waiting to see how it looks like when you have partly cut into the compressed grain, but I didn't get to see it 😢. However, the final result is really good, I love it, a hollow form with a natural edge top is really something special.
    Enjoy the Christmas time, best Bruno

    Enjoyed the video. I was glad you decided to undercut the inside. As a side note, I watched one of your older videos where you gave a tour of your shop and found out that we are almost neighbors. I live in north Lake Tapps. (Your privacy will be respected.)

      Cool, thanks for telling me that, Steven! I know people watch from all over the world but I've always been curious if anyone around here watches! Howdy, neighbor! 😃

    Phi. , another one off masterpiece . Here is an idea to think about ,see if Nova makes some larger pin jaws so that you can hold some of your odd sized bowls internally?
    Sharing information , 3 - M makes a line of abarasive plastic bristle brushes for floor scrubbers ,and cup brushes and wheels ,but the bristles are straight , not twisted like the heavy duty wire brushes. I have a cup brush that i use on live edges instead of a Sand - O - Flex
    It is flexable enough to get into bark crevasses , yet is not too agressive that it removes more material than wanted , amd they are under twenty bucks . The nice thing aboit them , is that the bristles dont load up with dust like anrasuve paper or screen

      Thanks for all the info, Gary! 😊 They do make pin jaws but I don't like changing jaws. I might even have some pin jaws, I've got lots of different ones, just don't want to take the time to change them. My methods have worked great for me for years. Old dogs, new tricks, etc.

    With a handle it could be Aladdin's Lamp. Or a Sea shell. Really cool. Don't worry about nicks. At my age and yours, we all have a few nicks and that wood is much older than any of us.

    A neighbor gave me a pile of river birch I stored on the lower deck for several months. When I finally got back to it I found some highly patterned spalting in the wood, best Ive ever seen. Maybe one day you will luck onto some.

    It sort of reminds me of a turtle shell. I can also just imagine a bird family loving to nest in it while it hangs vertically somewhere. They could show off the "open floor" plan to all their friends. 😂 This one is really nice Phil. I think you did a great job.

    Phil it turned out great and you did a fantastic job on it. What causes these compression rings ? and do they weaken the tree/wood. Have a great Christmas to you and family.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  9 месяцев назад

      I think it's the wood, let's say trunk, of the tree where a heavy branch is hanging down, pulling on the trunk and causing those wrinkles. It could also be a branch where another heavy branch is hanging from it. It may also be a tree that is just leaning, maybe on a hillside, where the weight just causes those surrounding areas to bend. 😊

    There is something special about this one Phil.
    Can't pinpoint it but the closest I can come to is; Somethings have beautiful bits and others have bits put together beautifully and this is the case with this piece for me.
    Take care my friend and hope you have a great New Year.
    Cheers, Huw

    I understand why you often need to turn at a lower speed. What is the benefit of turning up the speed? Is it to accomplish the job quickly?

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  9 месяцев назад

      It's far easier to turn at higher speeds, Betsy. If you drive over a speed bump slowly, you can feel every inch and it seems to go on forever! Drive over it quickly and it's over fast and the car hardly moves. 😊
