- There aren't many heavy rock bands who CAN'T play this song, well this lot seems to be one of those who can't.Live in St.Petersburg, Russia 20 Jun 1994

This is what makes Whitesnake shows unique:spontaneity. I saw Whitesnake at the Wembley Arena and London Hammersmith Apollo and DC would ask the audience which songs they would like him to sing. And he would sing what the public asked. There were times where he could not remember the obscure Whitesnake songs... It was fun and fresh! DC and Whitesnake forever!
Yeah, I don't think Gillan has ever sung a mark 3 song.
David Coverdale became the lead singer of Deep Purple in 1973. He left the group in1976. He then released his first album in February 1977, titled White Snake.
Just proves how great Deep Purple was back in the day. My favorite band I grew up listening to.
For those who don't get it...they are just joking around, this isn't Deep Purple, it's Whitesnake a totally different band, Smoke on the Water isn't a song they play...Coverdale did sing in Deep Purple in the 70's, so when someone in the audience shouted it out as a request they jokingly tried to play it...If Smoke on the Water was something on their set list you can be sure they would have nailed it.
Yeah but I mean Coverdale was in purple so makes sense that he’d play songs from his old band
Os cara errando é o charme!
Спасибо.
Apparently during the 1990 tour, Steve Vai started cranking out the riff and Tommy Aldridge got off the drumstool in disgust.
The guitar is playing the riff over and over when the verses are supposed to be G to F and back again.
Hard to believe they didn't know it.
At least SOMEONE - Adje - was trying give it a go?
You guys are insane, Coverdale sings it like he used to in the Purple era, so the voice isn't the problem. They wanted to interact with the audience, have some fun, you people are far too braindamaged to understand that. Don't take it so serious
Well... he miss the notes
잘듣고갑니다ㆍ감사합니다
so great !
Coverdale: simply the best ...
First thing I learnt that play on the guitar, those where the days
That's cool you got see Whitesnake
I like them.
why the crowd is so far from the stage ?
The problem here is that, while Coverdale sings the verse the band (listen espec to the guitars) plays the main riff. Besides, the key player starts the chorus way too early and when the band actually plays the chorus, the bass fucks it up. You wouldn't expect such a thing when it comes to Whitesnake, would you?
ETERNAL CLASSIC!
oh, I love it how they are joking around ^^ and I know a lot of such bands who just do something, just because it's fun xD
I agree.
Yes, DC is just widest range, but IG sing from the haeart and RP is Dewa who sing
DC looks scrumptious!
@worshippriest thanks, its all coming back to me now
how many of you kows the the story of Smoke on the water ?
sandulescu mihail its about a casino fire that actually happened
Everyone
sandulescu mihail I kow!
Everybody’s on the planet
WOW!! Coverdale is No 1!!
Thanks for the upload,
:)
💖
Rudy Sarzo on bass. Denny Carmassi on drums. Keep in mind that this was when grunge was in full swing in the US. I'm not sure how popular grunge was in Russia at the time but that may have been a reason for the smaller crowd in this video.
This is awesome!!! The person, for those that can't hear right, is NOT Coverdale! It's someone singing backup vocals. DUH
Love ♥️♥️🐍🐍🔥🔥
Un pezzo dei Deep Purple.... grandissimo
Liked the comment from David "Before we go any further you want anything else we don't know" - was funny.
Smoke on the Water
We all came out to Montreaux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a Mobile
We didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
Smoke on the water
And fire in the sky
They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky and Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water
And fire in the sky
We ended up at the Grand Hotel
It was empty cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We make a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know we'll never forget
Smoke on the water
And fire in the sky
Coverdale would change the lyrics from "We" to "They".
Ништяк!
@sykes0925 it is, people think he sounded as well on the concerts..
The Whitesnake line-up here was: David Coverdale, Adrian Vandenberg, Warren DeMartini, Rudy Sarzo, and Denny Carmassi.
Wow....big crowd,lol
When my son did his concerts back in 1st and 2nd grade they all sang in the same key I think Coverdale sang here it was like D flat Dorian while the teacher would play her piano in G. Holy hell that was hard to hear. And Glenn Hughes was all worked up that the band didn’t ask he and Coverdale to perform a song with them at the R&R Hall of fame? Maybe they saw this performance and thought “hell no!”
I do want to say for the record though thatCoverdale always comes across as a very nice guy who doesn’t take himself terribly seriously.
I love you Devid Coverdale
Прикалывается вроде как,
White🐍 👉 Good Formation🎸😎👊
Okay, 3 amazing talents...Coverdale still in his prime, as Vandenberg and DeMartini...So I am guessing by the comments, this was a joke..? If not, then I'm embarrassed for the 3 of them...this is so beneath their capabilities...Please someone confirm this was a joke or meant to be some type of a parody..??? :/
@davidbrucemusicvideo Yea it must be. He was in Whitesnake during 94
Да на стрелке В.О. Вайцнек и Дым над водой.Круто...
Best❤️❤️❤️❤️🌹ever
Missed a part or two,,,
🌹🐍
SINTO A FALTA DE SENTIR O QUE EU SENTIA MESMO SEM SABER O QUE SENTIA, MAS EU SABIA QUE ERA BOM SENTIR O QUE EU SENTIA MESMO SEM SENTIR .
love his accent :)
Haha, yes if nobody can really play it (or if only some can), it's not a good idea to spontaneously do a song. And yes, that's Warren DeMArtini, he was briefly in Whitesnake at the time as a touring guitarist.
I've been a Whitesnake fan since 83 and then worked my way back with Coverdale into Purple. This was quite embarrassing to watch. Saw them in 89 and they were headlining and were perfect. It was Coverdale/Sarzo/Vai/Aldrich/just not sure about second guitar but the pollution in my system that night prevents me from remembering. Great White was the opening act and they were completely horrible.
the song perfectly to ian gillan voice
Отвратительный звук, но я Их люблю!
👁️👏✊👌👆🍀 Hasta Siempre!!! Super Like 👍#JOSEPSS🤝👈👌👆
I'd like to hear him sing stormbringer today .
👍
🎵🎼🎶👏👏👏👏👏👏👊😎
cool
Nice song
wow
No leg splits?
1:38 -> He says: "I dont know !!!"
ljukyguitar the drummer?
oh David what would Ritchie say to this performance............
I blame the guitarist, it seems the rest were pretty good. Especially Coverdale, since he probably had to sing this song in his Deep Purple days.
None the less, I likes :)
Coverdale was cursing the Seattle scene about this time.
kudos to coverdale for rememberin' that song!
De hecho este brother estuvo en Deep Purple cuando Ian Gillan dejo la banda por sus diferencias con Ritchie Blackmore
Not much of crowd in St.Peterburg !
@sykes0925 he rarely have an off night.. look at donnington 83.. super rock in japan.. or live in the still of the night..or other clips here on youtube.. he doesnt have n off-night often, but in this video he almost did.. he sings great on some songs though, like dont leave me this way.
well, no not his main job, but he chose to be lead singer whilst playing guitar, so it is a pretty important one ! Yes, keeping in mind he's a great guitarist wont change my opinion of his singing?
Oops!!!! 😉😮
Aint bad at all, once the band kicked in the instruments sounded pretty great. DC had a little trouble at the beginning with his vocals, but that lil bit didn't last but a sentence or two.
By the sound of it; it sounded like one of the guitarists just didn't know the riff, the rest of the bad was epic.
Deep Purple?
Coverdale ... That was twenty years ago, we don't know how to play that any more, plus my vocals are destroyed from too much freebase cocaine.
NICE!!
i don't understand the audience participation here. Why were they held back behind the fence until the beginning, and then only a few let through to the stage?
Those were the VIPs. It's called the haves and the have nots. The folks in front were likely family or friends of high government officials or oligarchs.
Why are their only three dozen fans at this gig?
too many egos in the band not enough talent in them days much better now it comes with maturity
OMG!!! WTF!!! Unbelievable!!
bajo volumen
Agreed, Yet, You have to take the location into a account. That was only three years post-Glasnost(the breakup of the USSR). The citizens of the former USSR were still learning the freedoms they didn't have under communist rule. In terms of the lack of fans in this video, one of those freedoms could be promoting and, what to do with it.
It is amusing that the band appears genuinely not to have known the chords for the chorus. I don't know how anyone could get into a hard rock band and not know them ...
It might surprise you but there are guitarists out there that haven't learnt this song. I know I didn't because I grew up in a music shop, and its one of the only songs that is banned from being played lol
Are you in a rock band smart arse
Yes U re right
I guess the smoking, drinking and rock and roll live style took his toll
Think he still looks great but al lot older
David surely has aged a lot since 94.
On the other side my dad sure didn't look that good when he was 44 lol...
Sorry, this is not the "real" Whitesnake, it's DC plus a couple of hired guns.
jerryonspeed Yea, I agree with you, but still, this is Adrian Vanderberg...
Is this “Desperate Heart” period? Certainly no-one I recognise alongside DC
Yep.
W'snake light.
@@matijas257 😆👍🏼 so?
Adrian Vandenberg was in the band for a few weeks (slight sarcasm) comparatively.
Funny..! Nice to DC not taking himself (or the song) too seriously...
I really wish that Ian Gillan would sing this song Smoke on the Water with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes on stage
what event is that???why there is no crowd at all??? :/
Coverdale shows his true hear,
Really unbelivebly limbo
sad when people judge music based on the number of people in the audience...... still about art to some of us..... I think some on this board would do themselves justice by referring to "spontaneous" in the dictionary.
@leppardsnake @leppardsnake pls don't tell me that u don't think the vocal part is dubbed on official DVD like live in the still of the night. pls don't. pls! ur so naive. lol
UM,,,,I dont know if you know it,,,but THEY ARE THE SHIT!
You do know he was in Deep Purple, right?
New blood at water
looked like good fun to me.
@TheGrabsplatter Vandenberg
The crowd seating is wierd theres nobody in the front but its packed in the back
If any other band covered this song it would be lame, but since David Coverdale actually was a frontman of Deep Purple it's cool
I guess that's too bluesy for the rest of the band . The Band played the intro through the verse which are two different tones. The Verse is Dorian the Intro is more like a Diminished or Phrigian tonality . That is why he had a hard time singing over the intro riff .
Больше на стеб похоже
Wish I had Coverdale's hair, dammit!
