- A self-described hacker wrote to his local news station, saying he used a man's identity to take out a loan from an online bank and now wanted to help his victim. But was any of it true?
This looks low budget I thought it was a flashback to 1980s

Why would they give a loan that big without having the person come in and sign, Mr. Bob Roberts? Especially this day and age when it's well known anyone could have anyone's info and they can also make a deep fake of said person. It was dumb on their part to allow it.

Right. That makes no sense. The claim the hacker came and found a surveillance video makes no sense either, as if they would find a random video of the actual person holding up their license and showing the application on their computer.They were both involved. The whole story stinks of collusion.
Way to many coincidences lining up and lack of basic investigative journalism. Both video calls using fake background, the "brother" wearing an eye patch, the broken connection, the picture of the two together shows one much skinnier yet the solo pic looks like him... and of course he lent his "brother" his cell phone to make the convoluted story fit instead of buying a pre paid sim/phone while here. And the Canadian "hacker" shows up in California to the house to help. The bank isn't falling for it because their fraud team knows he's lying. Either he was involved or setting up his Indonesian brother for the fall. You can't send certified mail from Indonesia or Canada so that's a massive mistake, you didn't even use a 10 second Google search... you can get a return receipt but NOT "certified mail".
Oh, I missed a few. He coincidently and very conveniently "wiped his cell phone", closed all his accounts, and only provided one credit report agency, there's the big 3 and lots of institutions only use one not all three...
oh I made a mistake, the "fraud brother" didn't return to Indonesia until right after the letter was sent certified mail... how convenient, can't set up your "brother" in Indonesia as the fall guy without international postmarks so he's gotta still be here using your phone, license, and debit card you admitted to giving him.

Why would the brother taunt the news station in his letter? Seems to me like the letter was written by the original hacker and the brother was threatened/blackmailed by the hacker.

Certified mail is ONLY within the US so either you made a massive mistake or he did, you should have shown that envelope and the postmarks.
This is whole story so sus and I agree with you. Also, why was this posted today when it looks like it was filmed 20 years ago!? Also, he went out of state to Oregon WITHOUT his driver’s license!? He left his wallet at home while he and his family, who was visiting from Indonesia, went to an out of state trip?! Another thing I noticed was when the reporter spoke with the “brothers” together, only one of them was live while the other one was not with a fake background. Did the reporter ever have a video conference/discussion with BOTH brothers live at the same time!? Everything about this story doesn’t seem right. I was first sympathetic to the victim but the further the story went, too many red flags started to pop up.

I think it's him in both videos, it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't even have a half brother. The bank knows a lot they're not taking about for a reason, they handed it over to the feds already and he's digging his hole deeper and deeper

I can relate, there are 42 cars connected to me via credit agencies yet I take the bus. So many were hacked these past years.

Lenders typically only allow 1 chance to get through the IDVerify photos and video. This is to prevent fraud by having multiple attempts. The brother should not have been given more than 1 chance to pass the verification tool. Yet he was given multiple tries.
They are both in on it. The letter clearly wasn’t written by the brother.
Plot Twist: SoFi generated and kept the loan, sent him a Notice to the wrong address and notice of default, and when he responded to the email, by default he was presumed to accept the terms of the loan under default, and begin the payment schedule as noticed in the email.

writing this helps the victim. I feel like the letter might actually be written by the victim himself or some friend of his in order to make a real loan look like identity theft

Banks are telling all the time: keep your sin number private, do not share with anyone, keep your ID private, keep your bank cards safe, keep your credit cards to yourself….Sugi violated all rules…brother took advantage? Or they both are on this?
you know most of ppl with a ssn got breached? was all over the news and with it comes with personal info like parents name, all addresses, credit cards, etc. look up ssn breech. nothing can be done out a hold guess what haxor un holds it with your parents info uh.

People you sure never share your social in medical offices you don’t have to aloud nobody to take a copy or/ your driver license number never it’s not a federal law that said you have to. I refuse it all the time because I saw medical records left behind once in a empty building and was shocking I returned all this to the near sheriff department because I know what it’s good but nobody will do that.

I'M ASSUMING YOU DID SOMETHING LIKE USING THE PHONE'S CAMERA AND PUTTING IT ON A MONITOR SO HOW DIFFERENT IS IT REGARDLESS OF WHERE THE SOURCE COMES FROM THE VIDEO IS BOTH PLAYED FROM A MONITOR UNLESS YOU HAVE SOME REALISTIC 3d textural reproduction device (no a hologram wouldnt work as light goes through a hologram). The second thing is the broken English really? I'm sorry but I've been using Chat gpt since the beta days and still if use it a lot for my elderly Asian mother. The most impressive thing about Chat gpt is that the translation api doesn't work like you think it does. This isnt google translate. The results will always be a PERFECT grammatically correct English NOT that was awkward broken English forced in the letter (ultimate RED FLAGS = trying too hard and repeated 'hacker/scam group' storyline.
IF THERE WERE ANY MISTAKES IN THE TRANSLATION, IT WILL BE CONTEXTUAL such as not understanding a culturally relevant slang (i.e. Mexican Spanish vs Spain Spanish ...but even chatgpt gets this right). I'll tell you exactly what it won't ever do. Even a Google translate ux from 10 years ago would NOT have produced that broken FOB English.
