- In the year 2154, humanity is sharply divided between two classes of people: The ultrarich live aboard a luxurious space station called Elysium, and the rest live a hardscrabble existence in Earth's ruins. Really fascinating to research the dawn of civilization and how it affected our social interactions and priorities as a species.

Elysium seems to be the only place capable of financing such an endeavour. Even the company Matt Damon’s character worked for was owned by Elysium, since they’re the only developed ‘nation’ on the planet.
If Elysium collapses, people from the Earth are very unlikely to finance missions to mine resources in our solar system, I believe. It would be like if the US collapsed and then expecting a third-world country to mine resources in Antarctica all of a sudden for the salvation of mankind lol.

Second, how come the rich ain't using programs to encourage workers to work harder, such as promising the use of the med bays if they meet a quota [Makes more sense]
Third, If the med bays can do such wonderful things why not sell a worser version of it to the public for high prices [Instead of healing everything it can somewhat heal or delay diseases]
Fourth, if everyone is a citizen of Elysium won't people try to take over it and commit retribution against the citizens of Elysium for abandoning them on Earth?
a better question is why don't they use the police robots to do the work for humans instead and just have more medbay's maybe not for every single family but at least for every hospital. such a bad script

What is most painful about this movie is that when medbays land on Earth it becomes clear that there was never a resource problem - there is enough medbays to heal whole Earths population - and nothing stands in the way of Earthers being healed. True, but it does reflect real society. There has physically been enough food produced on the earth so that no one goes hungry for a very long time, yet world hunger kept existing. A similar thing can be said about healthcare and drugs too. Even if there was always enough for everyone, it's realistic that the higher class would try to keep it for themselves.

You think that each time I throw away my food I have to make a decision if I should rather donate it to a hungry child? No, I throw it away because there is nothing else I could do with it. You are right. But it does make sense for them to help when they have billions of dollars they got off our backs, our labor, our struggles, our pain. . . They have billions of dollars. Money that they can't possibly spend in their life time, their grandkids life time and their grandkids grand kids lifetime. It's not that we are mad they have money. We are mad they made that money off of our suffering and although they could save the world a few times over and still be billions of dollars rich and all that money does is sit there. Inflation doesn't occur if a few people have all the money. Yet somehow when everyone is happy and money is plentiful does inflation occur . . . Sounds rigged don't you think.

Thanks for this synopsis. I was really curious about the whole movie since it was mentioned on Cosmic Agency regarding the 'med bays' or med beds. Seems a movie called Passengers is also mentioned. I don't usually watch this kind of movie, but this was rather interesting, especially the control Jessica Foster tries to have over everyone with fear as motivation. Human psychology and repercussions are always an interesting part of a movie.
