Yeah makes no sense to have clunky techs to save humanity.
At the time when sun is about to die, humans should have had a godlike amount of technological evolution that they would have moved onto other star systems if not the Milky way. This is why you don't send a manned mission for important stuff like this. You could easily send 3X bombs unmanned and nearly 0% chance of problems. Send probes before bombs to check out conditions while bombs are being built.
While very possible, that wasn't as refined of a process 14 years ago as it could be now. It's a simple solution in technological hindsight, but even in modern times a skeleton crew would be sent to perform maintenance that AI still isn't intelligent enough to perform itself.
It's just a movie dude.
That would make an awful boring movie bro
It’s a movie. It’s not real.
As a mad scientist says, “throw it in the sun, how hard could it be?”
Fun inaccuracies:
1) Cooling down is the opposite of what the sun will do before dying + it will take significantly more than 50 years
2) Nuke is not enough to reignite the sun, unless you're smashing a bunch of Jupiters into it
3) No one sends manned missions for such purposes
4) Why didn't the AI adjust the shield orientation?
Exactly. This is probably the most unlikely sci fi scenario this side of the Wizard of Oz

The wole bomb thing is dumb bro yoy talking about two? And they dont even needed fucking humans
i havent watched the movie so im not sure this was brought up or not but..... the Sun is not a "fire" its nuclear fusion, no Oxygen is needed for it to burn as it were, and even more importantly it means you cant "reignite" the Sun in this manner.
this is not like starting a forrest fire on the Sun.
This comment section gave me an anuresim
As soon as you said the ship was called Icarus 1, I was like well that says they are going to need a second one :D
I first watched Sunshine in the theaters. This recap brings back a lot of memories. One of my favorite Sci-Fi movies.
Does anybody else just *sigh* when they click what looks like a good video then the TTS starts talking?
The sun is unimaginably massive even a nuke the size of Earth would have practicallyno effect on it.
Have you ever started a fire?
Even a basically dead sun would most likely just evaporate the “payload”
@@TheMaverick454 ...the sun isn't fire.
@@logicplague it’s a analogy obviously, the massive bomb will cause a chemical reaction “sparking” the sun much like someone tending to a fire preventing it from going out
@@TheMaverick454 Still not how any of that works, but honestly there are too many inaccuracies in this movie to compare to real world physics anyways.
Classic, instead of just completing their mission, they disobey all the protocols of safety and risk of killing 10 billion people just to try saving some crew members. This pisses me off so much
Using one nuclear bomb the size of Manhattan to light the sun would be like asking a single spark to ignite a soaking wet stack of newspapers.
Not our bomb, is other kind of nuke
The last few minutes of this video and film is just Among Us lol
So this is an “always follow your first mind (plan)” especially on a mission in space, kinda Sci-fi movie.
Pretty neat. I feel like the most unlikely event in the movie was the fact that they only had a single garden, with all the plants within a path of fire propagation and seemingly zero systems to suppress fire. Part of the safety review process for payloads for the ISS is to evaluate flammability, ignition sources and fire propagation pathways. Having a bunch of flammable organic material out in the open with no fire countermeasures is pretty absurd even for the ISS, let alone a mission upon which the fate of humanity depends.
You think that is the most unlikely thing please tell me you're joking
And the fact there's no automatic system to align the heat Shields
@@psgamer-il2pt I was partially. It was somewhat satirical because of how rigid NASA is on safety issues. It's a lot more absurd than people might imagine.
Right? how didnt they have a air lock system that quickly shut down all oxygen, fire gone, plants saved.
What about the fact that a bomb the size of Manhattan would have nowhere NEAR enough power to revive the sun?
There are two main problems with this movie (yes I've seen it). The size of the ship vs the size of the Sun, it would be like dropping a small pebble in the middle of the ocean thinking it will create a tsunami, and nuclear fission cannot cause nuclear fusion.
Especially if the „death“ of the sun means that it loses fuel to burn… There is definitely enough heat but at one point all the atoms are too heavy and not Hydrogen anymore so fusion doesn‘t work as efficiently anymore…
@@severinschneider8697The Sun will get a second life after running out of hydrogen when it shrinks and the pressure and heat can start nuclear fusion of helium but will swell to a Red Giant. It might have a very short third life when it shrinks again and starts with the nuclear fusion of beryllium but will then become a white dwarf since it doesn't have the mass and pressure to fuse carbon into oxygen.
This film has a very stacked cast.
Like so many sci-fi films we have astronauts who wouldn't have passed psych screening, and who jeopardise their mission (in this case to save the entirety of mankind), justified by weak reasoning. A visually stunning film though, with a great soundtrack.
The isolation of space as with the sea is enough to run tensions high also the concept of time seemed to be different hence the earth room. So those factors alone makes it in some sense believable
@@obsidianfrost9514
Possibly, but astronauts are taken from the best of the best, hence the term 'the right stuff'. For a mission of this magnitude they would have picked the best from the *entire* world. Considering they were literally on a mission to save the world the crew would've had no permission from mission control to deviate from their mission plan, and in reality, as highly trained professionals, would never have chosen to do so themselves, especially after a first failed mission. It'd be great to see a sci-fi film where, scientists, astronauts and special forces weren't depicted as stupid beyond belief and emotionally challenged! Bad situations can involve competent people through no fault of their own to give a reason for a high tension sci-fi plot. It happens in real life ! (e.g. Apollo 13!)
I've always wondered why in this space films they seem to pick the least mentally sane people, almost every movie like this that has some sort of space based disaster could literally be avoided if they just started screening the astronauts, instead of sending a psych ward into space
@@breakfreak3181 true I think if the concept of isolation and time difference was expanded on more it would of made it a bit better. Also I think the fact it was in essence a suicide mission as well didn't help

If anyone needs to know. The movie is called "Sunshine"
The Sun is about 4.6 billion years old - gauged on the age of other objects in the Solar System that formed around the same time. Based on observations of other stars, astronomers predict it will reach the end of its life in about another 10 billion years.
Lol yeah
Only a prediction but I’m not gotta bet against it.
It is still in Main Sequence Phase and our star isn't that big compared to other Main Sequence Stars. Earth can still live for 1-2 Billion Years until it turns to a Red Giant
There are theories that after few billion years, our sun will become big and it will swallow few planets along earth. So there won't be any clue that a dust called earth ever existed in the universe.
But only 5 billion years until it becomes red giant, and because it's expanding we only have 300 million to a billion years before the oceans are boiled off. So you might want to reschedule things more aggressively in your daytimer book, waiting till the last minute means you'll be thirsty and having to work in hot conditions in bad red lighting.
And that's why, when you're evaluating potential crews, you leave the religious people behind.
Yes always bring non religious crew as that will stop stuff like this

Pinbacker is NOT REAL!
He is the insane part of Capa's personality, thats why you never see him un-blurred.
Capa can't handle being responsible for all the personell deaths. When Maze confronts him at Trey's Suicide, he snaps and gives birth to Pinbacker. Remember, he just saw Pinbacker's ramblings on the Icarus 1.
Take the scenes on the bomb. Pinbacker appears out of nowhere in this huge hall very well lit. He fights, lifts Capa up one-handed with super human strength (he is malnourished burned skeleton) - its Capa fighting his inner Insanity.
Pinbacker isn't killed, yet he lets Capa proceed arming the bomb.
Boyle wanted a movie discussing mental health in space travel and under extreme responsibility. Turning that into a slasher makes no sense. He kept in line and fooled everyone.
You would thinking that a space station would have extra oxygen to survive
When it comes to space exploration there really is no extra. If something goes wrong you're probably dead anyway.
I think they had an oxygen garden. But I think I remember it getting destroyed early on, which caused the Oxygen shortage. I've only seen the first half of the movie.
