Good Heavens(Sol?), this movie had such great themes, and I'd have given it 7 stars on the Sun's visual depiction alone... Thanks for detailing and describing how this movie is even more awesome than I'd previously thought, as always.
"So if you wake up one morning and it's a particularly beautiful day, you'll know we made it. Okay, I'm signing out." - This has always been a personal favorite of mine as well. Loved the video. Thanks!
I really love the ending scene in that the burning flames of the sun suddenly stop just in front of Capa, as if it knows someone's there. Capa touches the surface smiling happily. It's surprising that the director described that way, that the flames were not extremely hot but rather mildly warm for Capa to be able to touch them.
It’s the moment Pinbacker was talking about in the observation room. All the rest have moved on, and the last man remains. For a moment, he is alone with God. But while in Pinbacker’s vision that was the end, all was stardust when it passed, in Capa’s truth it was the beginning, and all was life and solar fire.
O my God. Finally an exploration of this film that captures the elegance, tragedy, hope, despair, and joy of humankind’s quest for survival. As the fundamentally narrow-minded Pinbackers of this world place self-importance above self-sacrifice, it is invigorating to revisit a story that celebrates sacrifice for the common good. A story told with such insight and editorial and technical mastery. When Sunshine came out, I drove down the steep roads to the Englewood Cliffs, NJ cinema four times for a matinee showing of this film, with the noon-day sun shining in my eyes. Like many science fiction films, Sunshine is about a crew of characters and a plot-centric encounter. Typically, this encounter is with something alien or unknown, like a random planet, a virus, or perhaps a malfunction within their ship from the strains of space. In Sunshine however, the central encounter is with something every human being recognizes from birth. Thus the film becomes a reflection; not just on knowledge, but on choices in response to that knowledge. The cinematography and visual brilliance of this film display these elements in the extreme. Great video mate, a viewing pleasure as always. I’ve shown your work to family and friends and everyone loves it, so keep it up!
Well, one could argue the plot-centric encounter is Pinbacker, the Kurtz-esque Icarus I captain gone insane, but I agree with most of what you said here.
We see that shinning yellow dot on the sky every day of our lives but we know nothing of it, it's truth. There's a probe launched for our Sun it will reach its intended destination in a couple of years. We are about to make revelations that we never had before, we are going to gain more insight but not yet the truth.
The antagonist was literally a meme, a rehash of a template villain. And the plot was ridiculously dumb. Stop trying to act like superficiality is deep. As if u “get it”.
Death. Death is the ultimate illusion. We come from the stars, and to the stars we will return. If i had to choose, going into a star would be the way to die.
The cast in this is absolutely phenomenal, they perform the story so well ! Cillian is underrated and this plot was so interesting , more ppl need to see this film
This is a lovely tribute and only ten minutes long. The kind of video to watch just before we get up and either challenge or embrace the day. In the final analysis, today will be forgotten eventually. Focus on the now. There’s a school run to prep the kids for...
OMG!!!!! I DONT BELIEVE THAT THE LSOO, A CHANNEL THAT I LOVE, MADE A VIDEO ABOUT MY FAVORITE MOVIE. ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED MOVIE OF ALL TIME. YOU MAKE MY DAY. THANKS
Your commentary and observations sit at a really wonderful overlap point of philosophy, spirituality, and narrative...just gets me so humanly and directly every time! Thanks for the content!
I'd like to say that your videos have been a great inspiration to me. This video in particular is very profound because sunshine is after all one of my favorite movies despite being criminally underrated. I've always loved how the film made you feel so small and inconsequential in the vastness of existence yet you recognize that despite the inevitability of death, beauty can be found even in the bleakest of circumstances. Your channel has let me go beyond the surface of many of my favorite movies to discover for myself the deeper connections, and i sincerely thank you for that.
I've always liked how that shot at 5:03 turns the Icarus II from a spaceship flying towards a giant celestial body into an elevator descending into Hell.
You've touched on so many of my favourite films, and now you've done another. I honestly think if I could have picked your next video, this would have been it. Please don't stop making these, they bring me so much joy.
Sunshine resembles the Fountain, right :) definetely one of my favorite movies. Watched 10 times, and as a Mayan calendar teacher, I was giving seminars with it.
I love this channel. LOVE this channel. And not only do i get a new perspective on some of my favorite films but you also talk about some pretty interesting books that I look forward to reading myself. Please never stop 💕
This makes me think of humanity at its best, a truly noble and wonderful thing. The current state of affairs, with few exceptions, reveals humanity as wilfully falling far short of its potential. My heart aches and my soul yearns to be free.
This film is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen😢. Criminally underrated and gorgeous. This should be seen by any film lover and sci-fi lover. Your video has definetly moved me. Keep up the great work!
I've been following you for a short while, but never thought to check if you had analysed Sunshine. This movie is one of my favourite movies, of any styles. While I believe your analysis is accurate, Sunshine - and 28 Days Later at that too - has always been, for me, a comment on how, ultimately, humans are the real evil. It is not an alien that will destroy the ship, put the mission in jeopardy, dissemate the crew (both crews) and thereby put an end to Earth's population, but another fellow human. The same was true with 28 Days Later: zombies everywhere, but it's the surviving army crew and its leader that pose the greatest threat to the group of survivors. Other humans are humans' greatest threat... This movie is a true work of art. As a scientist, I loved watching with the physicist' commentary track again and again. The cast is stellar. I've just rewatched the movie and I can't believe Trey is Benedict Wong! I love him but I hadn't realized I had seen him act as early as Sunshine. Same for Mark Strong. Michelle Yeoh is amazing as always, same for Cliff Curtis and Hiroyuki Sanada. Admitedly, I was taken with Cillian Murphy and Chris Evan.
I have watched Sunshine for several times already, and I keep enjoying its depth, beauty and atmosphere. It's depressive and hopefull at the same time. I like the way the people are shown there. They behave, act, feel like truly real people, not like ideal comics characters. Thank you for your analysys of this movie.
This, like all your other videos, is thought-provoking and beautiful. Definitely have to watch “Sunshine”. Your Shawshank video is how I discovered your channel. It’s my favorite and it leaves me in tears every time I watch it. Your work has come to mean a lot to me. Thank you so much for it.
I love that movie, and also love you for this, the deep meaning behind the story and the questions made from this film, also the realism on how it's made, even with the flaws in the plot, that's my favorite si-fi movie since i watched for the first time. And you, also use the speech of "Pale Blue Dot" by Carl Sagan. This video has become my favorite one in all youtube. Thank you.
This has been one of my favorite movies for years, thank you for this video. This and The Fountain were very good movies that made you think and the music scores were phenomenal.
This movie explains religion to me in some weird way, the scene where he looks into the sun and gasps, he essentially looks into the face of god. Yes I know its an obvious interpretation, but it's just such a great analogy, the fear of god, and the magnificence that religious people must feel about god is perfectly shown here.
Most of humanity's earliest gods that we still remember were personifications of the sun. The interpretation was obvious because it was the best and most perfect one.
This is fantastic! I think that people that see the third act as problematic are not looking at the movie through this lens. Your interpretation is sublime.
This certainly was a beautiful take on a movie. The beauty of this movie exists only because you gave a voice to this perception of it. So GOOD JOB, you are making a difference in the world. You are part of something bigger.
I also love your Channel Name: you deal with issues humanity has grappled with since the dawn of consciousness and human awakening; and these have manifested themselves as stories, narratives, some of them transformed into myths, of a very very old time. Storytelling has been our common method for understanding life.
Studying psychology, I think our brains are designed to understand our environment and the events in it as narratives. We see our lives as stories, even if they are just a collection of moments. Our biology makes it necessary to make sense of life and ourselves this way. Accepting that does not make stories insignificant, on the contrary. It makes them more important than ever.
All your interpretations are amazing. Your videos are one of many sources of inspiration for my own stories. Friendship, love, power, life, meaning, good and evil, humanity... We need to think more about this. Thank you so much for this outstanding channel.
Thank you so much for making this!! Sunshine is such and underrated movie!! I LOVE IT! It may not be perfect storywise but everything else is perfect in my opinion.
This is one of your best videos. I have to watch this movie. And I second an examination on The Fountain. Aside from being a great movie, the ost is magnificent
I will never forget how this film made me feel. I went to see it 5 times in the theater. It remains one of my all time favorite films, and you have articulated so beautifully exactly why. I recommend it to everyone I know. ❤️❤️❤️
I don't know how you do it, but your videos are frequently perfection. They stir the mind and the emotions in new perspectives and open doors from pain and suffering into spaces of healing. Strange to say it but they are what l would expect going to a shrink would be like...but these are perfection and the shrink is just an pale imitation. Maybe it's the analysis of a story combined with Philosophies of life mixed in. At heart everything comes down to stories...ours and others....fantasy and fact...everything can be told.
I don’t understand...... how are you so great at making and explaining these! I don’t feel like I’m gaining just knowledge, but motivation as well. For this I thank you friend.
You subverted people's expectations- we thought that you'd have something to say regards its infamous 3rd act. But you surprisingly left it out in favor of exploring the larger themes at play in 'Sunshine', which the audience probably missed out, courtesy of the "slasher film" final act. Great job once again !!! Looking forward to more of your videos ! - From Kolkata, India.
Love all your videos. So much insight from my favorite medium articulated for us normal folks lol! I think you should make the film Annihilation the center of your next video. I'm sure everyone will enjoy your take. Cheers
5:35 - 5:59 Fucking unbelievably contemplating. So liberating and peaceful. We are but a spec of dust alone on a unknown blue marble, drifting among a sea of helpless infinite. Born into an existence of chaos and serenity a totality we will all return to one day. "Everything is the Light." - Nikola Tesla(1899)
I link this movie to a certain period of time in my life. I used to watch it again and again. It soothed me. It gave me hope. At the time I couldn't exactly pinpoint why. Your words opened up a window to the past for me and gave me a sorts of reconciliation. For that I am grateful.
Hi, first of all thank you for this essay. I have just translated the subtitles to Brazilian Portuguese. I hope I did justice to your beautiful text. Translating it was a very interesting experience. Sometimes it is difficult to find the right words and meaning. Cheers.
I feel like people misinterpret this movie a lot. "The third act" or the second half of this movie is not horror. It's psychological thriller. They didn't add a monster or a vicious murderer (those you see in the horror genre like Freddy Kruger or Jason) to the plot but explained heavily what happened to the previous crew and it made sense for one of them to be still alive. Pinbacker was an ordinary man and a normal person before but the overwhelming pressure of succeeding his mission caused him to become a religious fanatic and broken. Which in return caused him to become insane and ruthless. So when he was lying alone burned for 7 years in the sunlight it wasn't implausible that he got through it with the oxygen system still flourishing on the spaceship. I don't like when folks always try to make it look like Sunshine is a bad film just because they didn't like where the plot headed and explored the fate of Icarus 1. It would have been odd if it hadn't been mentioned and forgotten about. The writers and Danny Boyle were trying to give you an interpretation of the mystery that surrounded Icarus 1 and they did it extremely well. It was not unnecessary or out of place. It was very fitting and made the flick even more intense than it already was. If anything I felt like they could of done something different with Mace's character because his nagging was annoying throughout the length of this film. Dude had the worst problematic attitude/personality and wasn't a team player (until he finally was useful for once).
I think Mace's character is misunderstood. He is very mission driven and focused. Mace is very aware of how the very existence of humanity is dependent on the crew and their mission. It's why he was against any deviation from said mission. In that, he also understands that no matter what happens, Cappa has to survive because he is humanity's last hope because he is the only one that can drop the payload. If you notice, they have a chain of command, and it's why the psychologist stays back on Incraius 1. Searle was also starting to go down the same path as Pinbacker. He starting developing burn marks and pushing the limits of his exposure to the sun.
Great video. Loved the Carl Sagan stuff. Loved that guy and his books... ❤️ So well done. This video is genius to capture the essence of the movie in that context so succinctly. Brought me to tears. Reminds me of my life and my purpose on Earth-to propel the thinking of humanity beyond their tiny lives and embrace the unknown and our true power. Life is truly a miracle and without spacetime, everything is smaller than that pale blue dot. The trick is to realize that in your own consciousness. The smaller the point, the larger the significance, when you consider everything.
This is literally one of the most underrrated stories and movies of all time. I am old enough to remember when this came out in theatres. I actually was in a theatre...thinking to myself I've witnessed the most amazing movie of that year. It still rates up there, top 10 for sure.
Your videos are so good it blows my mind. Love watching your channel, and I appreciate how you do not pick ideological sides but simply seek to show the wonder in what surrounds us. Absolutely beautiful and I will definitely check this movie out!
LSOO, As good a movie as Sunshine is, your video is better and more beautiful than the movie itself. I wept. I love the Sagan references and quotes. I just watched this movie a few weeks ago, now I want to watch it again.
Simply remarkable. Humbling. I've referred back to Pale Blue dot recently to try and put the political discourse within the US into a greater perspective. Sagan, we need more like him these days.
Thanks! As always, you found and made visible interesting material, interpreted it intelligently, with masterful production. This autumn has been a time of re-discovery for me; your videos have played a beautiful part in that.
Thank you so much! In every video I have watched from your channel, you have done an amazing job in expressing the subtleness of the concepts and beauty that these movies convey. The way you coupled the concepts, the imagery, the music, it brings out in me a profound joy and appreciation for the art of cinema and for life in general. Again, thank you, very much so.
Yes. Thank you for reminding me this is one of the best movies ever. Perfect balance between a spiritual experience and a grounded scifi flick. There are pictures and sentences from it that just immediately tear up my eyes anytime I see them. Mace in the cooling tank, holy shit. Amazing analysis of its themes too, thank you for this!

It goes, "from dust you are and from dust you shall return" you're welcome 👍🏼
Me to
I'm in awe of how you evoke emotion with your thoughtful writing, delivery and editing. You are a treasure.
Yes! So much yes! Today get can't get any better. Sunshine is criminally underrated.
Bro. What? It was trash.
Never thought a video essay would make me cry
Joel bluup me neither - maybe you should harden the fuck up.
now this is how you do a video essay. perfectly captured the beauty, atmosphere, and emotional soul of the film
The cast in this is absolutely phenomenal, they perform the story so well ! Cillian is underrated and this plot was so interesting , more ppl need to see this film
This channel can make even The Room feel like a deep story about humanity and its fate
It isn't?
@@mylordandsaviour4786 I believe so my friend
“Oh hi Mark”
To quote Marcus Aurelius
Everybody says "Oh hi, Mark." But nobody ever asks "Oh why, Mark?"
This is a lovely tribute and only ten minutes long. The kind of video to watch just before we get up and either challenge or embrace the day.
In the final analysis, today will be forgotten eventually.
Focus on the now. There’s a school run to prep the kids for...
The voice and words of Carl Sagan with this score brought me to tears and humbles me. I thank you. TT-TT
OMG!!!!! I DONT BELIEVE THAT THE LSOO, A CHANNEL THAT I LOVE, MADE A VIDEO ABOUT MY FAVORITE MOVIE. ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED MOVIE OF ALL TIME. YOU MAKE MY DAY. THANKS
Like Stories of Old grew up with a visceral experience of life, death and meaning
I cried watching this. Wow. I need to recover for a while now. But yeah -- awesome job on this video.
Your videos are sublime and incredibly moving. Wonderful stuff. Thank you so much for taking the time and the trouble to post them.
An incredibly underrated movie that most people have neither heard of nor seen. So glad you chose this!
Weird that I remembered watching this movie yet all of it was a blur to me ever since. I do recalled the stunning music at the end.
This is one of my favorite sci-fi films and I'm really glad that u made a video about it!
You should definitely do The Fountain by Aronofsky.
Yesssssss, imagine that!
Yes, please make a video about The Fountain. One of my favorite most moving movies I watch at least three times a year.
Wholeheartedly agree! That’s always been a favorite for the cinematography and seamless blending of the three distinct plot lines.
@@TaraDobbs Same here :)
Sunshine resembles the Fountain, right :) definetely one of my favorite movies. Watched 10 times, and as a Mayan calendar teacher, I was giving seminars with it.
You take an art form. You make an art form. Your videos and narrative are my poetry. Thank you for sharing your vision.
I love this channel. LOVE this channel. And not only do i get a new perspective on some of my favorite films but you also talk about some pretty interesting books that I look forward to reading myself. Please never stop 💕
Your video makes me cry so much! This movie I adore, your brilliant montage, your touching voice, the final of the narration, omg
Amazing. You never fail to impress me with your content. You sir are a true content creator.
Loved this reply! Sunshine is def a work of art.
These vids are just, so well made. It's unbelievable. You truly deserve more attention on this site. You have put forward more than enough effort.
Thank you so much for these. Your channel is my favourite on RUclips. Trust me when I say I have never said that before.
Just saw this film. Deserves many rewatch because it's that beautiful. Thank you for leading me to it. 🌞
Sunshine is one of my most favourite movies, for literally every point you made in this video and more. Nice work
All your interpretations are amazing. Your videos are one of many sources of inspiration for my own stories. Friendship, love, power, life, meaning, good and evil, humanity... We need to think more about this. Thank you so much for this outstanding channel.
Wow, that was beautiful.
I just found the movie on hbo go and watched it last night now in the morning I’m returning to this video
Binge watching your videos man..you’ve got a talent
Suberb review! I have got shivers down my neck at the last quote about our little blue dot...
You always manage to take my favorite movies or tv shows and make them feel even more awesome
I don’t understand...... how are you so great at making and explaining these! I don’t feel like I’m gaining just knowledge, but motivation as well. For this I thank you friend.
Greatest RUclips channel, consistently great videos, putting into words things I never knew how to say about these works. Great job.
Favorite channel on RUclips right now.
Always loved the pale blue dot speech. Great video!
One of the best sci fi ive seen. Its at the same time an introspective Journey ... Perfect
Cheers.
This is one of the best videos I have ever seen, thank you
One of the most beautiful scores I have ever heard.
Your videos are hauntingly beautiful, you are one of the best channels dude!
This is without a doubt the best film essay channel on RUclips.
From 7:55 onward is one of the most emotional eye opening experiences one can have the privilege to see and hear.
Another great video. I haven't watched Sunshine in a while. Have to check it out again.
This content is probably the best on all of youtube. And this video is your best yet. wow
He starting developing burn marks and pushing the limits of his exposure to the sun.
good comment
I sometimes come back to watch this video, it's beautifully done and legitimately brought tears to my eyes.
Tr
Great video. Loved the Carl Sagan stuff. Loved that guy and his books... ❤️ So well done. This video is genius to capture the essence of the movie in that context so succinctly. Brought me to tears. Reminds me of my life and my purpose on Earth-to propel the thinking of humanity beyond their tiny lives and embrace the unknown and our true power. Life is truly a miracle and without spacetime, everything is smaller than that pale blue dot. The trick is to realize that in your own consciousness. The smaller the point, the larger the significance, when you consider everything.
Thank you for using audio from the best speech ever given by a human being
This is literally one of the most underrrated stories and movies of all time. I am old enough to remember when this came out in theatres. I actually was in a theatre...thinking to myself I've witnessed the most amazing movie of that year. It still rates up there, top 10 for sure.
Beautiful analysis of a beautiful film. These bring such peace into my life. Thank you.
Goodness this video gave me chills...
I adore this movie ... great analysis, my friend
Your videos are so good it blows my mind. Love watching your channel, and I appreciate how you do not pick ideological sides but simply seek to show the wonder in what surrounds us. Absolutely beautiful and I will definitely check this movie out!
One of my favorite films, and one of my favorite channels on RUclips.
Also, Alex Garland is the fucking man.
Thanks! As always, you found and made visible interesting material, interpreted it intelligently, with masterful production. This autumn has been a time of re-discovery for me; your videos have played a beautiful part in that.
Brilliant and mesmorising❤❤❤
Thank you! Such wonderful videos you share with us!
Again, thank you, very much so.
so true, that's why i subbed too (and Star Wars...)
This is a powerful video, a thousand congratulations on this masterpiece. Yes I am also a huge fan of this film too ☀️
I have no idea how I missed this movie, your review come up on my feed so I watched Sunshine just to watch your review, I love sci Fi movies, there’s something inherently innate that speaks to me as well as many others, the longing to know what is out there as well as what is within. Love your videos my friend, eloquent and full of wisdom 🙏 Namaste
Very deep movie and even deeper and brilliant analysis of it!
yeah, he extracted the essence of the movie even better than the movie itself
