Did this method yesterday and it really works! Thank goodness I had a friend help me finish a bottle of wine because there is a bunch of vinegar eels swimming at the top of the bottle right now. Thank you so much for making this video!!
Great video, really enjoyed the simplicity of your setup and the self-sustainability of the cultures. Creative way of getting them to come to the surface without disturbing the whole contents of the bottle. Thumbs up.
Great video although I think you failed to emphasize the most important parts. Vinegar eels are an aquatic 'worm' that needs to breathe air. If you put them in a fish tank they don't all drop to the bottom but they stay in the water column, their rapid wriggling is irresistible to most fish and they will not die off and pollute the water. Even better, they require no maintenance; once he culture is underway it can just be left to it's own devices for months with no ill-effects.
Great video again Cory! Very helpfull for many people! I might try it too....if I can find it hahaha. Never seen it before! *Keep up the good work and thumbs up!*
You should build up a live food section and offer as many live fish food cultures as possible they aren't as easy to find as they should be granted I have already sourced mine now but it'd likely be a big money maker for you guys
Easily one of the best Channels on youtube on the hobby keeping fish, I also highly recommend the podcast, I listen to it on the pocket cast app. Excellent work.
I just went to one of my country's food chains. After I thought of what you said I stared into their vinegar bottle's... I noticed there were tiny little white worms swimming around.. It was vinegar eels..
Please start selling vinegar eels. I just bought a "quick start" culture off Ebay. What I got was a 1 inch by 1 inch baggie with a few drops of vinegar and a couple eels in it. It will take months if it works at all.
Thank you it was a great video. I have some coming in the mail. I have time to get everything I need and will know exactly what to do when they get here.
😂 I don’t have tiny tiny fish, except for baby wild-type guppies, but I’m trying my hand at culturing live foods. So far California blackworms, microworms, banana worms, Walter worms, and now vinegar eels 👀 White worms are next. I’m betting these are all too small for dwarf pea puffers and bumble bee goby (blackworms and white worms excludes).
I've heard that you can leave vinegar with apples open for like a month on a shelf and they show up in it. I'm not sure if that's true. I got my starter on etsy though came with the bottle and floss and pipettes.
1. Is there any alternative to filter floss? 2. Do you replace the apple piece when the original apple piece completely goes? 3. After time the vinegar will become diluted. How do you know when to refresh this set up?
I wasnt planning on it, but my bettas mated and the male is now guarding the nest. All i have in hand are brine shrimp. The betta eggs might hatch today or tomorrow... I cant wait a whole month for the Vinegar eels to be ready.. what else would you recommend i use? *edit* nvm. Just saw you harvested in 12 hours.. thanks!
On the larger bottles that are all vinegar, do you harvest by pouring the vinegar through a siv? Secondly, why doesn't the fresh water and vinegar not eventually mix in the wine bottle method? Loved the macro shot.
Long term it'll mix, but the theory is you're harvesting it each day which is taking the fresh water out, so you need to replace the fresh water daily pretty much.
What is the solution that was divided into thirds? You also talk about declorinated water. Would you be able to use water treatment for aquariums or The sparkling water shown in your video
Janet Wills that was a colony of vinegar eels, to start the culture up. For the water you can just use tap water and add the “normal” aquarium dechlorinator :)
Hey, I want to start feeding my betta (and futur albino cories), live and frozen food only. I'm planning on doing a flightless fruitflie culture. What other live foods are a good size for these fish? :)
how do you dechlorinate water? or do you mean water thats been through an RO unit. i just bought an RO unit can i use that water raw or do i have to re mineralise it?
Does size matter, also what if all the vinegar eels at the bottom swim to the top, and there's none left to continue growing? Maybe I need to put a lot more vinegar eels? I got 3 cultures going, in Mexican soda bottles

No we can't do it
Vinegar eels are the best! Man, i love them - they're so easy. It is how I feed my tiniest fry, and I love how they don't all sink to the bottom

Just a tip: tie fishing line to the filter media so if it drops in you can pull it out. I also use a dropper to get them out.
Good idea. I’ve got so much filter media floating around in my first bottle…
Thank you for the tip. I just did this on my culture.

mosquito larvae is the easiest! just leave water outside. youll get the mosquito larvae in a few days amd a continuous supply of it too
Not in Winter

What is the white fiberous cotton like material you inserted above vinegar in the wine bottle to harvest the eels ?
