When i was a kid i used to harvest tadpoles and grow them into tiny frogs for me to release and i fed them infusoria, the recipe was way simpler in the 80s: I just put some lettuce into a jar of water and left it in the sunlight until the water got yellow, then i poured some of that water to my growing tadpoles, it was a fun kid science project!
That's how I cultured mine too when I bred bettas. When I run out of lettuce, I use sweet potato tops, pak choi leaves or sometimes not healthy aquarium plants. I used aged aquarium water

THANKS! I tried about 6 times using various methods (lettuce, spirulina, filter sludge). I finally had success with your method. 20 fat zebra danios thank you too.
Wait a second! Should anyone expect to have infusoria in their filters all along? I feel so much hasn't been explained in this video. You need to make an in depth video on this since to me you did a magic!
I also saw a video where the guy said to collect random water, from like ponds or lakes or buckets with leaves or whatever then put it in a jar for a few days and watch and see if there's infusoria in there. When you see them, suck them up with a pipette and use that to feed your culture. That way you can be selective in what you breed.
If you’re serious about infusoria, it’s worthwhile to look at a few drops of your culture water under a microscope (one drop at a time) so you can see how many and what kinds are in the culture. A cheap microscope is good enough, although you may want to look for one that lets you save pictures to your smartphone (if you have a smartphone).
THANK YOU!! You are the best. I have been keeping fish for 30 years and your methods are unique. I will try this week-end. Again you are a great inspiration for this hobby, I am very impress by your knowledge and your wiliness to share the good and the bad. I guess big RUclipsrs are forgetting that we are learning a great deal from mistake. One that I will share openly is the use of rain water (substitute for RO water). This is a great method if you do not want to invest in a RO system. BUT, be very careful, rainwater can have MAJOR problems, such as pest infestation if you leave your water outside for few days. I had QTY 3 tanks infested with leeches. Nothing kills Leeches, you can through away everything (plants/substrate), boil you equipment (filter/heater/sponge/media), disinfect your tank with alcohol and start all over again, hoping you are not killing your fish and they are not infected. No one will tell you the risk of using rainwater well, here you go! lesson learned, I need to invest in a small RO system. Thank you.
I know this is a year old at this point but ro water isn't the best for fish cause it's had it minerals removed. You have to re-add them every time, way to much extra work. Just treat tap water with water conditioner. Or let it sit out for a few days with an air stone in it. Spending hundreds of dollars on an ro system just to have to put in more work for water changes is well.... Dumb😅
i recently added some swan mussles to my tank and because theyre filter feeders i was really worried i had made an impulse buy with no idea of how to feed them. this video was very informative and im pleased to say my mussels doing well.
Your muscles shouldn’t need to be fed tbh. They eat the fish waste. 1 per 40 litres of tank water is enough to sustain simply off algae, bacteria and fish waist

Sometimes you get opinions on these culturing topics where you don't know that they're actually doing it, at all, or at scale. I would be a little scared about the "stinky" method fouling up the aquarium water because the fry live in a smaller volume.

I have a few questions if I can be annoying: Does the yeast method need light? The infusoria just need a food source, not light? Right now I've got a jar with some java moss, a little mulm and floating plants + water from a well established aquarium in a jar and I've mixed in some dissolved yeast but I'm not sure if this would work without seeding it with filter media and I'm not sure if it needs light or not!

How do you decomtaminate your java fern . ? I bought some and didn't know to do this. I put it in a quarantine aquarium currently. Where do you get your Java moss?
Would it be safe to grab some water from an outside fishpond to kick-start? I suspect there might be nasties in that water, I don't really want to risk bringing them into my tank... Reason I ask is I don't have a sponge filter to get a bunch of bacteria from... and only a small amount of java moss.

Cheers for the info lol simple to get a colony started and keep alive but I have a question 🤔 I have a betta tank with a male and a few ramshorn snails and I've just noticed a small amount in the tank and I haven't used anything from the colony to add to the tank so it's got me puzzled
First question, how do I get the infusoria to begin with? My last attempt yielded none, but my tank is only 6 months old. I did order some recently, fingers crossed. Second question, how do I keep the culture alive? If the bought culture survive the shipping, and I didn't just kill them... Should I just use the yeast method and keep straring new batches in new containers?

If I put them in a small natural planted tank, will some of them survive or all get picked off by the fish?
Can I use water from a natural pond ?and can I use hornwort or other floating plants instead of moss ?
Cheers for the video ! I've been hoping you would post one for this. 🤙keep smashing it
That java moss method, also results seed shrimp, it seems they appear at infrequent occasions for me. I did not realize my tubs of java moss were already loaded with infusoria. Now I don't have to worry of running out.
How long does it take for a new tank to start having infusoria in it?
Please show how you keep bbs and daphnia please!
How do you decomtaminate your java fern . ? I bought some and didn't know to do this. I put it in a quarantine aquarium currently. Where do you get your Java moss?
Hi can you pour the water from the jar with the yeast straight into your fry tank ?
how do I make infusoria without water from an established tank? I have a new tank n I did a complete water change couple of days ago..
Can the baby fish not just eat the Cyclops that are eating the Infusoria? Also thank you so much for taking the time to make this video.
If their mouths are big enough. Eventually the cyclops and seedshrimp get eaten too but they are closer to the size of brine shrimp.
Would it be safe to grab some water from an outside fishpond to kick-start? I suspect there might be nasties in that water, I don't really want to risk bringing them into my tank...
Reason I ask is I don't have a sponge filter to get a bunch of bacteria from... and only a small amount of java moss.
Love your videos bro whenever I watch your videos I feel good about my hobe and keep making videos ❤️❤️ lots of love from INDIA
Maybe a transparent bucket for the java fern method would be better? This way the java moss is getting some light.
HI KFS U ARE SOO HELPFUL I HAVE PLATYS AND THEY HAD BABIES AT ABOUT 1 OR 2 AM AND I ONLY FOUND 4 FRY BUT IM ONLY A BEGINNER WISH ME LUCK. PS I ONLY GOT THE PLATYS YESTERDAY AND CAN U GIVE ME SOME TIPS FOR PLATYS
How's that gonna work tho if I have a breeder box hanging in the main tank. It's just gonna flow out into the main aquarium? Molly Fry been born this minute as I type 😮help!!
When adding java moss to the bucket of water, do you keep the bucket in a dark place indoors, or outdoors somewhere ?
@KeepingFishSimple Using the 24hr method, do i just wait for the water to clear and siphon off the clearest water and feed straight unto my tank?
Man I needed this, perfect timing. I wonder will bronze coreydora fry will rather these.
Probably not as they’re going to float around the water column, instead, try a microworm culture, fantastic food for Corydoras fry
Should I just use the yeast method and keep straring new batches in new containers?
does it have to be java moss? we have just never find it around here. could i do same with ambulia? have that in abundance
