Just like you I have failed to culture infusoria numerous times despite so many youtubers saying how easy it is. I think the biggest hurdle is just adding aquarium water - as you say, you've really no idea what or how many organisms might be in it. What changed for me was squeezing a filter sponge into jar. I have produced infusoria numerous times using this method and never failed. I have even managed to isolate a paramecium culture from my infusoria culture, just take a very tiny drop from the paramecium, the stuff that appears to be flowing down the jar and use that to start a new culture. Keeping multiple cultures is useful too in case of a crash.
So good to see you back and making new content to your channel. I hope all in your family are doing well. Looking forward to seeing new content going forward. ❤❤😊😊
@SimplyBetta It's a joy to watch your channel. I have over 24 Bettas myself in separate containers. Haven't bred any since 2000, but I hope to do some breeding by 2025.😁😁
Glad to see you are back in business! To celebrate I took the plunge and I subscribe to your channel! From a zoological point of view, paramecia are part of the infusoria. But technically, both methods are different because in one you start from a strain of paramecia and in the other your start from (almost) nothing. So the production of infusoria is much more hazardous. For my part, I try to produce paramecia for my Ram Cichlid larvae. It was simple, just have to put daily some drops of milk in the jar. But I lost it because I didn't maintain it well. And my pair of Ram Cichlids ate their fry each time... Paramecium is a ciliated protozoan, so a unicellular eukaryote, that feeds on bacteria and yeasts. That's why you need to put in the medium some biological material that will mold or some drops of milk (that contains Lactobacillus bacteria). In the lab where I work, we don't like so much to use paramecia to feed our fish larvae, because it means you have to introduce bacteria and yeasts in the facility if you want to maintain a constant source of paramecia. From a sanitary point of view, that's not safe. So we tested to produce strains of rotifers, that eat planktonic algae, before using artemia nauplii for older fish larvae. Baby fish always demand a lot of attention. I hope you will succeed in your betta fish production. Take care 😉
OMG! SO glad to find your channel! When you carry the giant wood piece home, climb under your house to install jacks under the LOTR tank, and when you talk about not being able to get anything done when your kids are awake I 1000% relate! Absolutely appreciate.
I always love the feeling of coming out of these videos feeling like a professional ichthyologist, even though I don't even know the first thing about fish sticks 😅
I find it helps to collect some mulm from the bottom of the aquarium. I get infusoria without even trying. sorry you aren't haven't much luck. I use dried leaves, works well for me.
Great Video! .. and special thanks for the shoutout. I use the paramecia all of the time for most of my very small fry and especially for the smallest species fry. It's a must-have for those that breed smaller fish.
Oh yes, I tried that one too. I wonder where all that bad luck came from. I’m going to treasure this successful lettuce infusoria culture and like, keep it going forever haha
Hi. Not long ago, I raised around 30-40 rasboras. They are tiny when they freshly hatch. I made an infusori culture with the yeast method and I used filter juice too. It was succesful. When the time came to feed my fries, I checked the culture by feeding it to my endler guppies. I saw that the guppies are hunting the infusoria. That Spawn wasn't big and I could keep I think all, or almost all the fries. I always fed my cultures with a small amount of yeast.
So glad you made this video. I’ve been on a paramecium research kick for the the last week. Gathering as much info as I can. Now I can add your technique to the list.
Came With the same conclusion as you have. Now I am using only a clean paramecium culture that I bought And some vinegar eels. I give pu on the Infusoria. Too much risk not to have anything when you need the most.❤
I think I have paramecia. I put a chunk of dried banana peel in tap water then I wait 2 days then I insert a few drops of my previous culture. I like to feed every day with yeast that way the bloom is really realy big.
I think it all depends on what organisms are in your tank water to begin with....ie you cant get something to grow and take over....if it wasnt in there to begin with. Have you tried to start from a cup of outdoor 'pond' water? I realize that could have all sorts of other stuff you may not want, but maybe it would help? ie the best sourdough bread is supposedly from the san francisco bay area...due to stuff in the air, etc. So who knows.
Do you condition your tap water with something like Prime? I assume stuff won't grow in unconditioned tap water because they're treated specifically so organisms DON'T grow. But the cultures grew this time, so who knows... 🤣 Have you tried Cyclops at all? They're smaller than baby brine shrimp. I've got some freeze dried, not sure if they can come in live cultures.
Cyclop copepods? They are common in waters and will live in other live cultures like with daphnia but seems impossible to culture in any density as they may be cannibalistic and very difficult to catch.
you can try get paramecium from dried forest leaves or dry grass no success guarantied. I've kind of got lucky once like that. BTW I was feeding infusoria and paramecium with stinky water created by putting in cup 3-4 oat flakes with water for 2 days. and pouring it to cultures, Once I've didn't feed them for week and I've lost paramecium..
I'm making a betta rack rn I plan to use 1 inch tubing and gonna make a 3-5 rack system copying aquarium co ops video using the gutters but idk how strong of a powerhead to buy for this build any tips
i appreciate the humor aspect of your content. nice to break up the dry, monotone videos typical of this hobby. can only watch purely informational vids for so long before i tap out haha.
I use paramecium in aquariumwater in 5 liter tanks. Feeding them with coffeecream. Change water every week with aquariumwater and you will have Paramecium forever !
Maybe the bananas were treated with something that stopped the growth? Anything that requires friends is out the window for me because I don't have any friends. Thanks for the video. 😊
Thank you, Taylor. This is a really interesting topic. It took me three goes to get a bucket of green water. Now it's not-stop! See you at Disneyland! 🙂 ~Ron
For infusoria , 2 weeks is too long! I culture them 2 or 3 days before i need to use it. They almost guarantee crash by day 5-6. They need a big water charnge+ new food. Its also affected by the food. Banana peel has a lot more sugars and spoils faster. Green foods last a little longer
That’s probably why we use things like lettuce or kibble or banana leaves versus raw chicken or something Lol! But that could be considered a “pro” for the isolated paramecium culture, as yeast is pretty harmless

Love that you show failures and troubleshooting. Makes the process seem more approachable for us less experienced folks ❤
At the end of the day, I prefer videos where I fail at things and learn from them!
Thanks Kaitlin : )

Keeping fish simple does a video where he uses Java moss to start infusoria.
Great to have you back! Cheers from 🇨🇦

I use oatmeal flakes in a 5l jar. It works amazing for my paramecium culture

Glad it was helpful! Good luck!
love you vids theyre way better than ano other fish vid. super entertaining!
Is there a part 2 to your nano beta tank forest? I would love to see how it’s going and how you made it high tech like you were planning.
Came With the same conclusion as you have. Now I am using only a clean paramecium culture that I bought And some vinegar eels. I give pu on the Infusoria. Too much risk not to have anything when you need the most.❤
I think the very scientific conclusion is that you complaining about it online was the defining factor for it working out for you this time 😂
Welcome back !!! Yes lol I enjoy your videos and when are you breeding bettas again ?? Do you plan on breeding any Giant bettas or king bettas again??
I have never tried to culture before. How long does it last. Can you seed the next culture from the old ones?
Thank you very much for the info,Penny Polendina!
You bet!
I use blue bucket, 2gal. nasty vacuumed sand water from shrimp tank, wad of java moss and bacopa clippings.
Put light over bucket. Done.🤔
Thanks for the video. It's exactly what i needed.
😂😂😂 so good having u back TayTay! 🫶🥰
Awe your doggy is so cute!!
She is precious!

Green water works great especially if its from a fish tank& also use a small air stone so those cultures will thrive
Do you use organic produce? It sounds a lot like making sour dough yeast starter or something.
Similar, maybe! The lettuce was organic, I wonder if that makes a big difference 🤔
@@SimplyBetta pesticide is poison.
great effect ❤

I use dried pinto beans soaked overnight for infusoria. This has never failed for me.

I went to your site....Do you sell any Bettas or just the plants and food?
Love the videos. Love the hair color.
Thank you!!

Alfalfa pellets or hay (rabbit food) is a good food source for paramecium. Rainwater is good to boost an old culture.
The more important question is, how is Fanghorn Forest a doing?
I just did an update today!
thank you penny
I have found that you can start your infusoria culture with a bunch of flowers. Nudge your husband in the ribs about getting you some flowers :D
Wonder if the banana has been sprayed/fumigated with too many toxic chemicals to grow anything, it's not unusual for exported bananas.
10:21-10:22 Same.
Maybe the bananas were treated with something that stopped the growth? Anything that requires friends is out the window for me because I don't have any friends. Thanks for the video. 😊
Try squeezing a bit of sponge filter gunk water into the infusoria culture when you start.
It's guaranteed to work. ✌️
Thank you, Taylor. This is a really interesting topic. It took me three goes to get a bucket of green water. Now it's not-stop! See you at Disneyland! 🙂 ~Ron
Green water! Another thing I’ve never been able to do, hehe.
Enjoy Disneyland this year, I’m stuck in snowy weather 😭
VERY INTERESTING :)
THANK YOU FOR SHARING :)
I DID NOT SUCSIDED WITH INFUSORIA , PARAMECIUM I DID NOT TRY IT .
THANK YOU FROM ISRAEL :)
mouth watering? lol your fry should love these. happy halloween 👻

I have never had a successful infusoria culture either, I thought it might be due to chemicals used for pest control on fruits and veggies now a days.
I breed my bettas in a 10 gallon of these insect water, you should make a video of this
Fish food and aquarium water also will do the trick to have paramecium
About accidentally growing bad bacteria or pathogens to your baby fish? I think more pasteurization of the vessels and process.
That’s probably why we use things like lettuce or kibble or banana leaves versus raw chicken or something Lol! But that could be considered a “pro” for the isolated paramecium culture, as yeast is pretty harmless
Baby fish survives in my tank without me feeding them.
did the paramecium cultures stink?
The wheat berries cultures go from no odor to tolerable to I should have reset a long time ago for me. If I use it regularly, I don't notice an odor.
Try boiled hay.
Friends
You can just use water and add grass clippings and in 3 days you will have all you need. I use a microscope to view the results
green water its easy
You’re still doing videos 🥹🫶🏻
Yeah, sometimes!! ;)
I’ve tried doing this and it was a huge failure. 😂
Baby food!
you could get yourself a microscope🤡
never!
@@SimplyBetta why?
İt's all the rage , i think
Tancho spawn ???
update soon!
For infusoria cultures best to invest in a cheap microscope.
