The ULTIMATE 1 sec diy stand for the net at 8:14 gave me goosbumps !! Thnx for the info .
😂 always a way to make things work, glad you enjoyed!
Look forward to the green water vid, always struggled to sustain my daphnia population!
Hoping this helps you 😄🙌
I love it when I find a south african in this hobby putting out great quality videos.
@@duanescharneck168 much appreciate the compliment thanks so much. Can you recommend any other local channels to follow? I don't know many other local aquatic youtubers 😀
@@SimplyAquaticCT youtube.com/@droeksonfishkeeping?si=bAiQ-ZeDuUjlExej he's probably the one worth mentioning that I know of.
Great channel. Droeks on Fishkeeping also has great content
Thank you for showing your system. I love it.
You're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😄
Great video, thanks! How often do you change water out of the daphnia tank, and what percent of the water at each time?
@@larryleszczynski4019 honestly I don't have a real strict schedule, normally once I see it getting clear again I'll pull some out and add green water. Even 5 liters is enough to make the tank green again if your culture is dense 😄🤙
2:32 I can have red colored daphnia?! Amazing! Great video. I keep my main daphnia/scud colony in a plastic tote with a small sponge filter set on low and a heater in the winter at about 76 fahrenheit.
@@kjudestevens1519 I believe it's called Moina Magnus or something like that 😂🙌
Thanks for explaining it so well bud 🎉
@@osamagangat3898 so glad it was helpful, thanks for the support 😀
There are cheap nets that you can buy or DIY with the fabric at the desired micron level, that way you only catch the adults which are maxed out on nutritional value and the babies pass through the filter to then be caught in another net/filter to place back in the tank. It isnt super complicated, it s like you dont need to make holes in a wall for an RODI unit, you can fix it on a wooden stand that is very solid and use the RODI filtration in any faucet in your house or a friend's house if they don't have one. But this is a great video overall because I also use green water and it works. However I do moina because most of my fish are way too small as adults to fit mature daphnia in their mouth. 🥲 Also when you begin dropping in oxygen levels your moina/daphnia will turn red. It is not another species, it is just a reaction to low oxygen values of your water. So you can use them to tell you how low your oxygen is, which is why it could be alarming to see them turn red in a tank with fish.
@@ragingcalmness7815 this is such fantastic advice thank you so much for sharing! And an excellent idea with the micron fabric I can't believe I didn't think of it!
@@SimplyAquaticCT All good man you have a very nice and clean aquarium setup in the back, I like it 🙂
@ragingcalmness7815 thanks so much, definitely a work in progress and learning experience. One day I will let my OCD take over and do something proper, but for now this works!
How many tanks do you have in your fish room?
@@SimplyAquaticCT Perfectly understandable. I have 27 at the moment, some of them I use for the sake of learning things that you can't learn online. I had a setup for instance that was producing food forever for adult hillstream loaches without any input on my part and barely any ambient lighting. Very healthy fish and a lot of activity but I never aimed for breeding them of course, not everyone wants legions of fish in their aquariums haha. So I made sure there was no place for them to breed in there or find the desire to do so. I feel like where I live everyone just breeds guppies and shrimp to sell 🤣
That's pretty impressive man!
And yeah the feeling is mutual, I think people sometimes find something easy to breed and it gives a big confidence boost as if you know what you're doing, but then you find yourself with the problem of trying to get rid of all that extra livestock responsibly!
You should definitely consider doing videos or IG posts man I would love to see your setups and I'm sure many others would be interested too!
I'm really enjoying your videos. I actually subscribed a few months ago.

Awesome video! I need some Daphnia to clean up a green water tank I have going unintentionally 😂
@@aliciamatthews8357 always the best though, would definitely keep that culture running in a bucket outside - never know when you might need some 😂
Where did you get the little net..?
That was from @McMerwe
Good video, nice and informative.
I too have a daphnia magna culture going. I have an IBC with the daphnia and 2 more IBC's growing green water. To say I have a lot of daphnia, would be an understatement.

I just found you today, and I love your content! Question, your green water tank has a tube in the bottom. What is its purpose? Thank you!
@@cindys.4409 thanks so much!
The tube is just a place for plecos to hide out 😀
How does the egg look like?
@@HimaKumar-e8t little black dots on the top sides of the tank, it will get stuck anywhere above the water line
Hey ive just found copepods in my shrimp only tank. And its inspired me. I now have a separate green water tank. Is it safe to culture daphnia in my shrimp and copepod tank and feed it with water from my green water tank? I dont want to hurt my cherry shimp population
@@anopolis9323 100%, copepods will be present in any cycled tank without predatory fish. And yes shrimp will do perfectly fine in green water 😄
Great video
@@jonathanlopez5549 thanks 🙌
is these daphnia moina or magna ?
I believe mine are moina, but the principles would work for both variants :)
Did he say where he got the net from in the comments?
@@JetRavenBlack at my LFS @mcmerwe

Hello! When transferring daphnia from live green water to the fish tank, should I be concerned about triggering an algae bloom?
@@theclamorband Hello 👋 This is a great question, if you want to be 100% sure you don't trigger it I would rinse the net with daphnia in clean tank water before releasing them to feed the fish 👌
@@SimplyAquaticCTthank you !!
Here did you get your daphnia from to begin your culture
@@andrewsmit9932 I got this current batch from a friend, but have seen them in local lakes and ponds frequently. I do believe in some places you'd be able to order live eggs online as well if you don't have a water source nearby.
