These things grow so fast its crazy. I've only had mine for a few weeks and I've already divided it into 7 containers. Turns out you can put them in the fridge to slow them down, and you can even freeze portions just in case you kill all of your cultures you can try again by thawing the frozen ones. Not all of them will survive being thawed and frozen, but you really only need one female to survive.
2:00 or so, when you dropped that bag of worms, that's probably the equivalent of dropping the empire state building full of people from the stratosphere
Usually, a micro worm/ banana worm/ Walter worm culture already contains live yeast. So adding extra yeast to your new culture is unnecessary- the old yeast will reproduce in the porridge or mashed potatoes or whatever medium you use. But sprinkling some yeast on it can’t hurt.
Thanks for making this video. The idea of culturing micro worms has always been so intimidating to me, but you made it look so easy. I'm going to try it now!
5 years later; what happened to the cooking show? Ladybird would love to be the live audience! This video was referenced in a comment on walters worms video from UK. Every aquarium sea flows back to Aquarium Co-op!
I am absolutely happy that I have found your channel. I am from Germany and there is no one who make such awesome and informative vids like you. Keep going your good work Cory 💪🏻🐠
I use my excess sourdough starter with some added cheap plain white flour. Works like a dream, doesn't stink, and it means I don't have to throw away excess starter. The nematodes ("worms") feed off of yeasts on starchy foods. They can and will occur naturally as yeasts are everywhere, so baker's yeast isn't essential, but I find it helps if I'm not already using bread starter (which contains yeast).
Yes, this really is a good idea! I have a sourdough starter that I've kept going quite awhile. Using it to culture the microworms will help to keep the bread starter up and going real well too! Thanks for the great idea! 😁
thanks for showing us how to raise these worms, Ive been meaning to watch this video for weeks now and finally find the time to watch it, well worth the wait!
Great video...I just been watching your live cultures to see what cultures that are out there and what will be most beneficial for my small fish community tank.
Great informative video again Cory! I've never seen that in my LFS before! I can't wait for tomorrow's livestream! I was just doing maintenance on my tank when I got the notification! *_Keep up the good work and thumbs up!_* *#NotificationSquad** **#TacoUnion** **#TeamAquariumCoOp*
Finally found a local source for a Banana Worm culture, so figured Cory would probably have a video on their care. And I was right! Thanks Cory, for the info and my new Apisto fry thanks you too! 🍌🐛🐠
Great video!! I did a similar one on my old channel but this was much more professionally done. Great info!! I didn't realize that the yeast was optional.
Awesome info. Was always wondering how the cultures were done. Thanks, you made it look so freakin easy. Now I guess I just have to Google micro worms to see where I can get my first batch.
i just posted a question on my local fish group thru facebook. turns out there are several people willing to just give you a scoop or two of their cultures.
I just got my kit of four live feeding worms/eels and I hope they survived the trip and heat here! I am concerned but the person said it should be fine. I don’t see any activity when I opened them it was just “moosh” cultures. But I’ll find out in a few days. I added a pellet of cat food on top since Simply Betta said she uses dog food. This video helped thank you Cory!
this is the second time of watching as i am now waiting for my culture to arrive. I wonder @aquariumco-op if you have forgotten about your culture yet. Thank you for the info. :)
Great video thanks :) I did this in 3 containers, identically, and sprinkled yeast in 2 of them and left the 3rd without. Placed them in the same conditions beside eachother... For me the yeast made a huge difference.. the day after setting up, there were about 5mm of worms crawling up the sides in the tub without yeast, and about 4cm of dense worms up the sides in the 2 with yeast. I just read the yeast breaks down the mash potato and makes the nutrients more readily available to the worms.
I agree the mash potatoes make it smell less and Single Grain baby cereal. Can I also note when getting a culture in the mail you should see movement or that glittery look of worms. Don't end up like me with a dead culture in the mail for $5 from ebay lol 👍
Great video. I'm going to try this. Thanks for showing us how to do it with potatoes. Everyone always said how stinky it was, which turned me off of trying it. I also didn't want it in my fridge.!
+Tina Cuppernell well you won't want to keep em in your fridge cause they won't produce much. There is still some smell but not nearly as much with potatoes
Great info. I used to use oatmeal for my microworms, banana worms & walterworms but I now use a crispy rice cereal mixed in some water according to a Dan's Fish video and I have never been happier. The stench from oatmeal was stomach churning & with the crispy rice cereal, my olfactory senses aren't assaulted. I use the yeast too in the medium to feed the bacteria that the worms feed on. I didn't notice such a difference in the worm production either.
BTW they break down yeast... think about it like KH... in the long term the worms eat the yeast, in short term they eat micro organisms in the potatoes- so if you don't have yeast it's easier to crash it
I like that a lot. If you do not like it 'hands down', that is asking for feedback, which he says he will use to craft future youtube videos. Can't ask for much more than that... Well done, I hope to see a whole lot more videos that I might not like... :) I also notice that at the moment your likes v dislikes are running at 50-1. It doesn't get better than that!
ok this may be a stupid question but when you go to make your new batch what do you do with the old batch not all those worms have been fed so do you just toss them? I feel like I am missing something. I only have two Betta and some two small fish ponds with Koi and gold fish
Hey there I'm sorry if I didn't hear you. But who did you order from? I have been running into bad luck getting a living microworm culture. One order was a no show and the other I dont see any movement just what appears to be medium
Hey Cory, would you be willing to show us how to do a vinegar eel culture as well? They are supposed to be easier to take care of, so you can be a bit lazier with them.
medical tape can also be used in lieu of the filter floss. it breathes and seals out bugs and even microscopic contaminates such as bacteria, fungi etc.
Super interesting!!! Where can we order a worm culture? I am hopping to get my Red Badis (Dario Dario). They are still young but somehow don't seem interested in the food I currently provide them.
I made the culture medium out of bread...now i see the microworms wiggling on sides but the medium seems dried... can i add water to media? Will it spoil the culture?
I've been thinking for a while now of adding live food cultures to the fish room, definitely have to do this! you said the potatoes smell less than the oatmeal.....how bad is the scent? is the whole house going to stink everytime I open the container or do you have to get your nose right over it? looks like it takes almost a week to get the culture thriving? how about when making the new culture in a few weeks.....you take that small scoop from the old and then just toss the rest?
+Rich's Fishes typically I use the old culture until it stops producing. The smell isn't enough to smell it more than 8 feet away and it smells mostly of vinegar to me
What do you think of the theory that using a substrate with better nutrition (baby cereal, added spirulina, etc...) transfers that nutrition on to the fish through the worms?
I agree. The worms themselves are still likely to have the same nutritional profile. Any "extra" would be what's in their tiny guts. That's my theory anyway.
Thanks, Cory. I love this video. Will you do diaphania in the future? In your opinion, diaphania vs mw, which one is better/easier? Also, how do you know if the culture goes wrong? will it smell super bad?
I think worms are much easier, daphnia I think is better. I plan to work with them a lot more this spring/summer so definitely some more videos. Culture of micro worms going bad, turns black and gets runny
I just got my first microworm, walter worm, and vinegar eel cultures today and these videos are ridiculously helpful. Thank you Cory!
These things grow so fast its crazy. I've only had mine for a few weeks and I've already divided it into 7 containers. You sure worms survive being forzen?
That was pretty dang cool watching the worms wriggling in the tub, oh my gosh so many worms! Thank you for sharing, it was very informative!
So many worms!
I watched the whole video... I don't even have an aquarium!
KSP-Crafter that’s hilarious 😂 you should get one! It’s super fun and entertaining but please research. A lot goes into fish keeping :)!
Some things are just fun to watch. I’ve watched two different cow hoof trimming channels, although I don’t have any cattle or a farm.
This video was extremely helpful, I was looking for some live fish foods, thanks for the great content Cory!
Absolutely love the live food cultures, thx for sharing more great ideas Corey
i love your real, practical, approach to doing things. thanks for these videos.
how can you dislike an aquarium co-op video? awesome job as always! thanks
matt ellis easy when he goes into sales mode, subtle but there
2:00 or so, when you dropped that bag of worms, that's probably the equivalent of dropping the empire state building full of people from the stratosphere

+Gore it is super easy, you'll be a pro at it
just starting a bunch of live food cultures and so thanks again for super help!
Cory teaches us how to make mash potatoes. he's doing it all wrong, there's already worms growing on it.
+rurutu M just slowly transitions you guys to my cooking show
Aquarium Co-Op u already did Cory. Them Mudds LOL
Oh god...that means that you aren't raising your fish as pets but for...
@@AquariumCoop When's the show dropping?

Always great to see your videos Cory here in the UK keep the good work up
Thanks for watching Jay.

Excellent "how to" video. Makes my favorite list. See ya tomorrow, Happy Easter.
See ya tomorrow :)
That was a very interesting video! Thank you for making it.
And the filter floss idea 👍👍 Thanks this will solve my gnat issues 😁
+Kala C yep, gotta keep em clean from invaders :p
I like unboxings but I like these types of videos more. So much knowledge and great tips. Thanks Cory ! ... DAPHNIA next plz lol
Great video!!
I did a similar one on my old channel but this was much more professionally done.

+Michael Agostino yeah shouldn't be too hard to track some down
i just posted a question on my local fish group thru facebook. turns out there are several people willing to just give you a scoop or two of their cultures.
This great! Thank you so much Corey!
Thank you Cory for making this informative video. I really want to feed “live” foods” as often as possible. Variety us the key.
I just got my kit of four live feeding worms/eels and I hope they survived the trip and heat here! I am concerned but the person said it should be fine. Great video Cory, I can't wait till tomorrow's stream I can't see all of it but I will definitely watch most of it
Very interesting video Cory, thanks for sharing!
+EJ Fishes 76 thanks for watching ;)
As someone who use to raise TONS of dart frogs, this is giving me flashbacks of fruit fly cultures.
Right?!?
Awesome explanation, thank you so much! (subscribed).
Thanks for subscribing Fachrizal.
love it cory🐟🐟🐟🐟
Thanks for tutorial culture.........................................................................
GR8 Job Cory!!
Great Video!
A nice “treat” for the fishies.
Great video Cory! Looking forward to the livestream tomorrow.
great video, thanks, i never even know that there were such foods for fish.
So cool
You're a very handsome lad!
( you have a great face for radio)
Lol so do I ..
Seriously Thanks 4 the info! 👍
Thank you. Very informative. Off to find some sellers of these cultures.
this is the second time of watching as i am now waiting for my culture to arrive. I wonder @aquariumco-op if you have forgotten about your culture yet. Thank you for the info. :)
+david Wilson of course I've forgotten my culture :p I travel too much. As I type this from a plane :(
Aquarium Co-Op well have this as a reminder otherwise you will have a smelly fish room. Lol. Have a safe flight. ✈
Cool tip. Didn't know about the deformities. I never fed my fish only them but it's good to know. :)
Looks easy -I think I’ll try it!
great video very detailed information thank u for sharing it with us.
+D.P.K. Fish Aquariums no problem, thanks for watching.
Nice videos I have learned alot from u. Keep up the good work
+WARHOGS12 coc thanks for watching
Wow. Love this video. I am looking into starting up a home based biz of breading/hobby. Again thanks so much for the information.
+Cameraz Eye good luck with the new business

great video super creepy but as always informative iv been unsure if I was going to do a live food this has mad me want to do it
lol i liked how the pleco moved the shrimp outa his was to get the big chunk of oatmeal hahaa
Starting my walter worm culture now :)
Thanks for the vid, very informative!
Interesting.
This was very informative thank you :)
you can also cut a potato in half and place on bare ground in shade for a few days, when you turn pieces over they will be covered in micro-worms.
I agree the mash potatoes make it smell less and Single Grain baby cereal.
Can I also note when getting a culture in the mail you should see movement or that glittery look of worms. Don't end up like me with a dead culture in the mail for $5 from ebay lol 👍
+Kala C yeah, I suppose I should have shown that glittery part earlier, I've never gotten a dead culture though
I thought the video title said how to make Micro Worms, I was looking forward to it.
great job and solid info :)
Great video! I have been looking for a live food for my guppy fry. I didn't realize that worms can be cultured so easily.
yep, easy peasy.
Yes please offer them online!!
Grinds worms, Black worms?
nice video

Walter Worms, Micro Worms, etc. are probably the easiest, low maintenance, live food for fry IMO.
BTW they break down yeast... think about it like KH... in the long term the worms eat the yeast, in short term they eat micro organisms in the potatoes- so if you don't have yeast it's easier to crash it
+Fish in the Corner so in 10+ years of doing micro worms I have never noticed a difference personally with or without yeast
good vid

I have to find myself a starting culture of these to feed my little guys.
Thx alot
Could you mix in powder repashy, powder fry food, or spirulina powder to gut load them?
ok this may be a stupid question but when you go to make your new batch what do you do with the old batch not all those worms have been fed so do you just toss them? I feel like I am missing something. I only have two Betta and some two small fish ponds with Koi and gold fish

👍
Hey Cory, would you be willing to show us how to do a vinegar eel culture as well? They are supposed to be easier to take care of, so you can be a bit lazier with them.
They are easier to take care of, just more work to harvest. At some point I"ll do their culture yeah.
so cray
My culture arrived in wheat flour. Used mashed potatoes to make a 2nd and 3rd culture. Seems the wheat flour is much more productive.
Great video! Very informative, did you culture all those worms? You'll have a pot for every aquarium!
You could yes, Easy to just split the culture and make more.
Can I use these for guppy fry as an alternative to baby brine shrimp
medical tape can also be used in lieu of the filter floss. it breathes and seals out bugs and even microscopic contaminates such as bacteria, fungi etc.
+David Knauss I'll have to try that, that is an excellent tip if it works just the same
You r so smart
a little bit disqusting but intresting :p i have to try that with my guppys
+remoza they'll love it in sure
Super interesting!!! Where can we order a worm culture? I am hopping to get my Red Badis (Dario Dario). They are still young but somehow don't seem interested in the food I currently provide them.

What do you think of the theory that using a substrate with better nutrition (baby cereal, added spirulina, etc...) transfers that nutrition on to the fish through the worms?
+The Fish Nerd my guess is that it does help some but the overall effect is so small that it nets out to not a big difference in growth
I agree. The worms themselves are still likely to have the same nutritional profile. Any "extra" would be what's in their tiny guts.
That's my theory anyway.
I wonder if turning off the filter/pump for 5 minutes during feeding would help to keep them suspended longer.
Hey Cory it is time for some more One Tank at a Time videos.
In my country we dont have dry mash potato in the box like that. Can we use fresh potato to do that ?
Next I want to see you sell & ship these online via your website or Amazon.
since I only have two 5 gal Betta tanks could I feed these worms also to my pond Koi and gold fish and bottom feeder out in my water pond?
No. Even your bettas won't be able to benefit from them. They're only for fry and Corys I think.
After the 3/4/5 weeks and you start a new culture should you still use the one that the culture was taken from? Or discard?
which worm would be good for chili rasbora?
Amazing! Thanx Corey. Where do you order these worm cultures?
