  • This is what happens when motoring journalist Jonny Smith (aka the Carpervert) attempts to road test four mowers including the Hayter Harrier 56 Autodrive Variable Speed InStart Rear Roller Petrol Lawn Mower (Electric Start) [Code 561J] :
Rwd Vs Fwd Vs AWD Vs twin blade monster garden petrol mowers made by Toro and Hayter.

Its better to tip a mower back to inspect rather than sideways. The oil tends to travel to the wrong places sideways. It's also a great idea to disconnect the spark plug lead before you put your hand in and around the blade. That's only if you like having hands though and on the odd occasion they can drag your clothes into the blade and remove your face for good measure. So the moral of the story is, pull off the ht lead if you like your hands and face. Great little review though.

Good review, the Hayter is the Rolls-Royce of mowers

Great review. I love the Personal Pace system; hate a front wheel drive although one could get used to one I suppose, and I love the TimeMaster30 as it's called in the States. There are disadvantages with RWD, but it's mostly that in some spots, i.e. ditches, they'll sort of spin out, lose traction and stop moving, but one can usually help muscle them out of those few spots and they are much more predictable and tractable everywhere else; plus you don't get all that bulk up front that makes trimming and turning very akward. Toro really touts AWD over here, but I feel it's overrated for most users, yet I've never tried one. Toro sells through dealers and Home Depot over here pretty exclusively. Problem is that most dealers in my area don't carry them, because walk behinds are usually bought by most consumers for cheap at the big box stores, and so premium walk behinds are not in high demand except by commercial lawn professionals. Home Depot models are purported to be put together more cheaply, but I've not had issues with mine.
I've got a TimeMaster 30 and mow my 1/2 acre lot with it. I bought mine in 2014, and the U.S. price has been $1,000 for the pull start and $1,100 for the e-start since they went on sell over here in 2013. I found mine on sale and used a credit card sign up bonus with Home Depot to get my price down to around $825. Turned right around and paid off the card and cut it up. Mine is made in Mexico and shipped straight from the factory to my home. The newest version, since 2017 in the U.S. has a 223 cc instead of the older 190 cc; the latter is what is shown in the video and is what I have.
I've never had a mower that I could rave about before, but this TM30 is great. I didn't really understand how much I liked it until I tried going back to another mower after mowing my lawn a few times with the TM30. The TM30 is marketed to homeowners over here, but many commercial users also buy them and that's probably their main customer, even though Toro has a commercial version called a Turf Master with a steel front end, tougher wheels, Kawasaki engine and a few other differences; mainly it is about $700 more and has a gear-selectable transmission instead of the Personal Pace system, and it's that last point as to why some commercial mowers choose the less sturdy TM30. They prefer the Personal Pace system. Toro also owns a commercial brand called Exmark. There is a near-identical Exmark Commercial 30 that is sold for around $1,700.
Toro has recently planted a new Briggs engine on this mower that takes it from 8 3/4 ft-lb torque to 10 1/2 (sorry for not converting to NM). The major complaint about this mower with the 190 cc planted on it in the U.S. is a misplaced complaint. Many say that the 190 cc engine was/is too weak, but really the problem is that this twin blade mower spins so fast and the blades chop up the grass so well that when mulching it tends to clog up much worse than most mowers, and then the engine bogs down. So it's really a matter of the mower not expelling grass as well or as fast as it can chop it up. Therefore, this mower is much better as a side discharge machine or as a bagger if one can stand emptying a bag every few minutes like will happen with any walk behind and a bag. Even in side discharge mode, the chute attachment will often cause it to block grass at the side opening, and the same bog down occurs with the engine. So the best use of this mower is to side discharge with the chute modified or by not using the chute and just strapping up the mulch plate on the side.

One thing not to do is turn the mower on it’s side cause you’ll mix the oil with the Petrol

You can turn the Toro TimeMaster on the engine oil inlet/drain side and incur no leakage of gas or oil. I take the rear mulching plate out of the back; lock the handle straight up; and tilt the mower over and let the handle rest on the rear mulching plate to clean under the deck. You need a set of ramps or help to load this beast in a pickup truck.

weird comparison you should compare apples to apples. Toro makes the Pro Stripe 560, its comparable to the Hayter not really the time master. www.toro.com/en/golf/specialty-equipment/prostripe-560

Fine for once a week. Honda HRH536 for all day every day. Also driveshaft driven. Belt driven sucks.
Honda 60 kg so fab grip in wet.

Love the quality of the video but stick to the motors mate.
    Too many dangerous practices demonstrated.
Mowers, like most horticultural equipment are potentially dangerous.
Please don’t take this comment personally but it seams you’ve not had much experience with mowers.
A great time to social distance from mowers lol.
I love the video though and have subscribed... stay safe pal
