- Full #service on a #Hayter #Harrier 48 lawnmower.
This is a British made petrol rotary lawn mower with a 48 cm / 19 inch cut width and a powered rear roller. The Harrier is still made today, but this mower is over 20 years old and hadn't been serviced for some time. It has a Briggs and Stratton quantum engine.
Parts used:
Carburettor overhaul kit ebay.us/5xCSts
Air filter cartridge 491588S amzn.to/2ZsziXf
Pre-filter ebay.us/QZdieM
Blade 480149 amzn.to/2zZE7wu
Spark plug ebay.us/3edkPc
Engine oil ebay.us/z5DL8i
This video shows:
Engine oil change.
The most important part of the Hayter Harrier service. I used a fully synthetic 10w30 oil because I had some left over. A 5w30 would also be fine and that's what I would usually use, hence the link above is to 5w30.. The manufacturer originally recommended SAE 30 oil but have updated their recommendations as oil technology has moved on. The mower needs to be tipped on its side to drain the oil and the engine takes about 600 ml oil when refilling afterwards.
Removing the fuel tank
The fuel needs to be removed before the mower is tipped onto its side for draining the oil and changing the cutter blade. I chose to do this by just removing the fuel tank. I did need to fit a fuel filter afterwards, for reasons which will become clear in the video.
Air filter and pre-filter change
Spark plug replacement. The gap is 0.76 mm.
Cutter blade
The cutter blade was really blunt and was mutilating the grass rather than cutting cleanly so I changed it for a new one from Hayter. I kept the old one and will sharpen it up to keep as a spare.
Carburettor overhaul
The engine wouldn't idle correctly and was hunting at full speed. These are both commonly caused by a lack of fuel, which in turn is caused by dirt or fuel gum blocking the carburettor. The video shows cleaning the carburettor with carb cleaning brushes and wires, ultrasonic bath and spray carb cleaner. The cleaning is shown twice because whilst it worked really well the first time, turning the fuel tank on its side, which I did during the service, must have dislodged some dirt in the tank. This made its way into the lovely clean carburettor and blocked it again.
After cleaning the carburettor, the video shows carburettor setup including throttle position, idle mixture and idle speed.
Drive system
Checking the drive roller.
Adjusting the clutch cable tension and bite point.

Great video mate. Particularly interested in the carb cleaning part. Your video far clearer than the overwhelming instructions in the carb overhaul kit.
Thanks very much, glad it was useful!
I have been putting off for so long fuel drips from fuel pipe between tank & carb. Wasn't sure how to gain access. So straightforward thank you so much👍
Glad it helped, thanks for letting me know 👍
Really helpful video Andrew - clearly described and I was impressed that you included the petrol tank gunge section and how you solved it. Thank you!
Thanks very much Gordon, that's great to hear!
Thank you for making such a well thought out and informative film.
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it. Cheers

Brilliant video .
Thanks very much, glad you liked it!
Having owned every mower known to man, my current 1998 Hayter Harrier 48 es is better than even my top honda pros.
I was wondering if you should of drained and cleaned the fuel tank, seeing as you removed it. Very informative video, thanks.
Cheers really helpful
Thank you, pleased to hear it.
Hi. Loved the video. I have exactly the same lawnmower. I’m having a problem with the height adjustment. The handle will go to the lowest setting. And up to the middle setting. But will not go any higher. I would appreciate any help and advice. Many thanks. 👍
Nice one
Good one
Cheers Mick 👍
Should be mineral oil as fully synthetic glazes the bore!
Thanks for posting, I have similar model with the older classic 40 engine and the rear roller rolls as soon as you start it. I think the clutch is permanently off, any ideas?
dont forget to check the diff on the split rollers would like to see you strip out the rear roller assembly for that repair
Thanks for the tip. That isn't a job I've done before - is it tricky?
it is a big job you need to remove the roller carrier assembly which means you need to remove the front half of the under skirting to detach the height rod then strip the assembly removing chain sprockets etc the diff itself are two push bike free wheels cheap off ebay just count the teeth thats all@@AndrewFixes
Back again after two years . I recently replaced the primer bulb and find that I have to prime quite a lot to get engine to fire , after firing it immediately stops so I have to reprime and away she goes . Do you reckon I could not have seated the primer bulb correctly or does carb need cleaning again . Interested to hear your thoughts .
Do you knave the torque settings for a hayter blade
👍👍👍
Carburettor Float Bowl Gasket Seal what size would that be
Just about to pick up a hayter 48 myself
That needs some attention. It’s about the same age. I don’t have an ultrasonic cleaner for the carb though, how much of a difference will this make? Thanks
I think you'll be fine without an ultrasonic cleaner, as long as you have some wires to use for cleaning and plenty of carb cleaner spray.
Mine says 8844 but cannot find it on the internet
What kind of carbureter is that
Which blade did you use? Would it for the 48 - 650ex
This is the one I used amzn.to/3IPXA3O
I have a lawnmower like this but I can't get the bloody thing to work so I've got Flymo now I don't know what's up with it
Sorry to hear it! Does it run at all?
No I couldn't get it to work yesterday we tried
I even put a tiny bit of fuel in the carburettor and it still didn't work
Ive got loads of old ones i just need to sell offf
