I'm 61 and my 87 year old mom lives with me. I took care of my Viet Nam vet dad for 20 years. Aging is rough. No one helped me and didn't attend my dad's memorial. It's like not having family. I take great care of myself since I'll be doing the "Golden Years" on my own.

Sometimes it's easy not to appear shy in the moment, depending on the day, but in other circumstances, the shyness might be almost overwhelming for some people.
The sad thing is that Josephine ended up being worse off having an overprotective parent. I know someone in a similar situation, parents wanted to keep her at home, now she’s very lonely and her parents have died. Never hold your kids back in life!
I I’m in Rhode Island, USA. We have a program called “The Village” where folks volunteer to help seniors. We provide rides to appt., wellness checks, visits, small home repairs or tasks, and the like. Look for a way to get active with your local community…volunteer at a senior center, nursing home, hospice, etc. our elders are often the most overlooked population, hungry for companionship. Give a bit of your time. You will be amazed how much you get back.

In every community, there are so many people like her....elderly, alone, often shut-in due to health.... in need of companionship and human contact. Society disregards them ,but they have so much wisdom and value to offer still. Younger generations are accustomed to a more modern approach to community/socializing, but these folks....I can't imagine how difficult it is for them if they don't have family connections. Loneliness is a horrible thing to endure. 😢
The problem is people have been warned about everything and they are so scared of being approached and there are no singles clubs anymore its all online and most of that is a scam to gather money so it's very difficult in this modern world for older people I'm 71 going on 50 but I live alone and the majority of the people around me are mostly single and terrified of other people we need to bring back singles clubs for genuine people 👌👌👌💯💯

My grandmother was in a nursing home towards the end of her life. I used to go visit her every weekend. There was a lady across the hall from her named Gertrude (can't recall her last name for the life of me). My grandmother introduced me to her. I found out that Gertrude did not have a family nor did anyone ever go to visit her. From that day on, anytime I went to visit my grandmother, I spent time with Gertrude also. She told me her husband had passed away years ago and they never had any kids. I enjoyed the visits I had with her and looked forward to seeing both of them each visit. Eventually Gertrude passed, then did my grandmother a few months later.

This is me in a few years! Grew up pleasing everyone became a breadwinner. Helped everyone out and forgot I have my own life to build. Now all my siblings are partnered and I’m still on my own but has gotten older now. I sometimes have to beg to be included on their outings but I don’t want to ask all the time. I was so focused on work and providing when I was younger I also forgot to build my own community, now that I’m older it is harder to make friends.
There’s a whole world of people who have chosen their family members. You wouldn’t even have to beg to be included; you can come to my house!! I make a great cousin 😂

I don’t think this title should have the words - broke my heart. This is a story of resilience. She has an open heart, obviously takes pride in her appearance and maintains a positive outlook. She just keeps on keeping on, which is all we can do… I’ve been in romantic relationships during my life, and at times I felt the most lonely… Having children certainly does not guarantee you’ll be cared for in old age… I think the key is to develop hobbies and interests that take you outside of your own self indulgence.

I am none practicing homosexual but never told anyone because of my culture and religion. I pretended all my life. I lived with my mother and I am nearly sixty. I am frightened when my mother dies how will I cope. Life has been difficult but mother was always there even though I never told her the truth. I understand more than anyone about loneliness. More than half of my life has passed let's hope I don't have a long life. When God is ready to take me it will be the happiest day of my life. It will be end of a long journey. I am so glad about this channel. It is one of few times when I can open up. It has been difficult but I managed to keep my dignity and uphold moral values and I am proud about this.

This Christmas we had extra people joining us. A young man, who is a friend of my youngest son. Long story short, he had a bad home life and ended up living with his step dad, after finishing high school. He wasn’t treated very well by him and ended up addicted to crack. Our son got after him for it and he got clean. This young man came to live with us last January. Since then, he’s got a job, his own apartment, recently found a girlfriend and is working on getting his driver’s license. We have pretty much adopted him, as he really doesn’t have any family.His girl friend joined us this Christmas also. She, too, doesn’t really have any family and I have taken on the task of mentoring her, as she really doesn’t have any parent in her life, nor had any growing up. The third extra person is a friend of mine, whose mom passed away this past summer. She grew up an only child and this was the first Christmas without her mom (her dad passed away a couple of years ago) and she really didn’t have any invites for Christmas from anyone else in her extended family (except for a cousin). So, not wanting anyone to be alone for Christmas, we made room for all 3. We are their family now. Josephine, if you were here and we knew you, you would have spent Christmas with us! I pray that God would sent you a new family to be apart of, so you won’t be alone anymore. :-)

Folks that are only childrenaturally think that if you have siblings that you're not alone or lonely. Sadly , it might even be more painful to realize you have siblings that don't get along with you and you are equally as lonely.

"Just get on with things", yes. Josephine has a positive outlook. The bad side of living a long life is you're going to outlive those you love and like. Even if you have children, you have to let them go and live their own life, as you did yours. Kudos to Josephine for not blaming her mother for her own choice not to continue her romance with Basil, I bet her mother would have wanted her to.
I don’t think this title should have the words - broke my heart. This is a story of resilience. She has an open heart, obviously takes pride in her appearance and maintains a positive outlook. She just keeps on keeping on, which is all we can do… I’ve been in romantic relationships during my life, and at times I felt the most lonely… Having children certainly does not guarantee you’ll be cared for in old age… I think the key is to develop hobbies and interests that take you outside of your own self indulgence.
I had a neighbour who was 94, and she was very fit and cheerful....I asked her what was her secret, and she said..." I don't really know, but I think it is because I never married..."..😊
I wish there was a way we could connect with others who are lonely. Older people can be so beautiful to sit with.
I am none practicing homosexual but never told anyone because of my culture and religion. I pretended all my life. I lived with my mother and I am nearly sixty. I am frightened when my mother dies how will I cope. Life has been difficult but mother was always there even though I never told her the truth. I understand more than anyone about loneliness. More than half of my life has passed let's hope I don't have a long life. When God is ready to take me it will be the happiest day of my life. It will be end of a long journey. I am so glad about this channel. It is one of few times when I can open up. It has been difficult but I managed to keep my dignity and uphold moral values and I am proud about this.
What a lovely Lady. There are millions like her. Lovely and lonely. We should all cherish these sweet old ladies and welcome them in our midst. Especially at christmas.

This Christmas we had extra people joining us. A young man, who is a friend of my youngest son. Long story short, he had a bad home life and ended up living with his step dad, after finishing high school. He wasn’t treated very well by him and ended up addicted to crack. Our son got after him for it and he got clean. This young man came to live with us last January. Since then, he’s got a job, his own apartment, recently found a girlfriend and is working on getting his driver’s license. We have pretty much adopted him, as he really doesn’t have any family.His girl friend joined us this Christmas also. She, too, doesn’t really have any family and I have taken on the task of mentoring her, as she really doesn’t have any parent in her life, nor had any growing up. The third extra person is a friend of mine, whose mom passed away this past summer. She grew up an only child and this was the first Christmas without her mom (her dad passed away a couple of years ago) and she really didn’t have any invites for Christmas from anyone else in her extended family (except for a cousin). So, not wanting anyone to be alone for Christmas, we made room for all 3. We are their family now.
Josephine, if you were here and we knew you, you would have spent Christmas with us! I pray that God would sent you a new family to be apart of, so you won’t be alone anymore. :-)
What a lovely lady! I think you really made her day, as you get older you find yourself more and more alone in the world, and spend time looking back on things. By talking with her you made her feel connected to the world once again, and that is a very special gift.
