I agree whole heartedly it's that thrill that keeps us coming back to fix things. We are so Lucky Matt takes so much trouble to give us those really great shots of what he's doing. Also the amount of great shots in his Intros and Outros shows he cares about the video quality as well as his great content. It must be hard to keep up the content when it's so cold.

I once got one free on the side of the road. Craftsman augur type. Almost no hours ...12 HP... They had broken the ring and pinion drive on the auger. Monster machine. I first went to Sears for parts....they wanted to sell every component in the ring and pinion unit individually and wanted a fortune. Talked to a guy I know that has a boat motor and lawnmower shop that had a big parts pile ....he didn't have it but told me MTD had the same drive unit....got it from MTD for 1/4 the cost

I would have tried harder to get it to run on ether and full choke before taking the carb apart because once it gets going, the vibration and heat will often, though not usually, clean out the carb; and you can even use it while riding the choke while it is doing so, though you can't get full power until it is done.
Often, moving any mixture screws back and forth and then putting them back where they were helps break up clogs too; or writing down their location and then opening them wide, as wide as possible without the screws vibrating out, and trying to run it that way, will help it clean itself as it runs, and then screw them back in if it starts running rich, and back where they were when finished, or tune properly in case they were wrong. The mixture might keep getting richer as it self cleans though, forcing multiple adjustments.

I got an s720 or 620 (I’d have to look at it in the garage) from a neighbor who was throwing it out, hadn’t ran in 15-20 years, fired up first pull after filling it up with gas. Does ok up to about 2-3” of snow, then anything more it’s break out the big snowblowers, but it’s the older style single flapper throwing snow, not the chute style like that one

    1) Carburetor needs rebuilt or replaced

For those not mechanically inclined, finding equipment on the curb is the perfect way to learn basic small engine repair. Pull the start cord, if you feel compression there's a better than 50% chance it can be fixed, usually for $30 or less. 90% of the time it's ethanol fuel related. Even if you can't get it running take it apart, see how it operates, its cheap/free mechanical practice.

Really nice find! I have a much older version (CCR 2000) and even at 30 years old it is still a beast. Especially in fresh snow, it will go through a remarkable depth without issue. Where it falls short compared to the big 2 stage unit is in thick, heavy, wet snow. My 2 stage will unhappily carry on through it, but the two stroke will just nope out of the whole situation. On things that get used very infrequently (like the 2 stroke snow blower) I run the engineered fuel, because pump gas goes bad so quickly. Engineered fuel, fogging oil and drain the tank/carb in spring, and that little thing will probably live for the rest of your productive days.

I have a ccr 2000 from 1988, and it always struggled with heavy wet snow as yours does. If you haven’t already done so recently, I HIGHLY reccomend replacing both of the rubber blades and checking the scraper bar.
After I did that it doesn’t bog down in those conditions anywhere near as much as it used to! Also remember to double check the drive belt!

You wont work as hard either the machine will do most of the work. It works much better on solid ground but should work the same way in the dirt :)

Toro bought lawnboy mowers back in the early 2000s i think. And toro sold the rights for lawnboys two stroke engine to Briggs and Stratton. How still makes all the parts for this engine.
The hole carburetor and engine are basically a 2 stroke lawnboy engine turned side ways slightly modified for snow opportunities.

Since I have retired and consolidated to 1 location there are 3 in the garage. The oldest one is the easiest to start. Dealer told me it was produced before they started watching emissions on small engines. I have replaced rubber paddles multiple times as well plastic wear strips behind the paddles. They work great on smooth surfaces. I'm not sure about your surfaces.

Hey Matt , here in Wisconsin. That's what i use 90 % of the time is the Toro pup ; it chews through just about everything ma nature throws at us. Even the driveway aprons, if you get to them shortly after the plow trucks run through .
Toro's are very impressive little units, not much they won't move ! Good find, and make sure you pay attention to the plastic bite bar/scrapper . If you don't catch it in time, you'll start to wear out the side sheild covering the auger drive belt. Witch sucks if it packs up with snow from the hole that get worn in it !! and your pattle's , check the auger belt, and the idler bearing.
You'll have that unit for a good many years to come.
Oh,tip.... the wheels love to wear out on the shaft, when they get sloppy, the machine doesn't clean to the ground nice.

I've had several of these two-cycle snowthrowers and they work well if the snow us dry. They are ideal for a smaller paved driveway. They always sound like they are high idle but that is the optimal tuning. My first one a kid sold me for $20 and it had the wrong gas cap and it didnt have the two-cycle ratio on it so unused straight unleaded fuel. It would just stop running and I let it cool and it would work again. Finally got a booklet and it said use two-cycle fuel and the thing ran mine a champ. I couldn't kill running the wrong gas. Those Toro snow blowers are dam near bomb-proof. We use thousands of them throughout Metro North Railroad. Platforms, sidewalks and around the facilities. Our Mechanics at each facility maintain all of them. We brutally throw them in and out of truck beds when we go along to the different railroad stations during snow duty. Every 2" or so inches were out keeping on top of the storm for public safety. It is extremely rare for one of those Toros to go back to the facility broken. Toro makes a solid product...

I have a toro car 3650. Had it for many years now and the carb cleaning has been my only issue which I learned from RUclips to clean myself. Many people have wanted to buy it from me, and one shop told me they are guaranteed to start if always mixed properly. I recently used her in a storm we had, and it hauled ass. Love the 2 cycle toros.

I have one of those, best snowblower I ever had! Love them!
I've had big snowblowers, all kinds but the little Toro beat them all.
Only time I've maybe wanted a real big machine is when 20 cm wet snow has coming down, then the Toro doesn't manage but that happens maybe once a year were I live so not a problem. The Toro can do 20 cm wet snow but then I have to be very gentle with it, push a little and then back up and so on...
I will never buy any other snowblower than this Toro.
I belive there was a 5 hp and a smaller one maybe 3.5 hp, I've got the bigger one and I'm happy over that.

Cleaned a couple contacts, worked the starter impeller free with some chemicals and percussive persuasion. Now it's fully functional and throws snow with no issues.

Nice! Those little Toro blowers are really good machines that will surprise you with what they will chew through. I use one like that on my shop roof when it gets deep. Easy to throw around up there. Speaking of free stuff or very cheap, I remember the Y2K scare when everybody bought generators up to the point you couldn't hardly find one. After that came and went, for the next couple years they were everywhere for really cheap or free because they wouldn't start from sitting around. I ended up with truck loads of generators, which I fixed and re-sold all of eventually, except for a couple bigger ones I still have today. Made out like a bandit on those. I love free junk that nobody wants to fix.

I do that same thing the neighbor sat a nice lawnmower out on the curb so I figured I would go out and grab it and sure enough I cleaned out the carb and got it running. Another one was a Dewalt pressure washer I cleaned out the carb and got it running then found out the pump had issues and I picked up a Chinese knock off pump for $50 and it works fine. Great job Matt! Just an FYI, if you ever have to replace a carburetor, check Amazon. The carb for my 2 stroke weed eater was between $55 and $80.00 locally. Amazon had a direct replacement for $12.00 and free shipping. Got it in 3 days. You have to spend a few minutes looking and the brand names are impossible to pronounce. Most of them have "ping, sing, ding or wang" somewhere in the name but they work AND fit.
Eighty dollars for a 2 stroke carburetor! Well, we can thank Uncle Joe for that too, I guess.

Reminds me of how I got my Dyson indoor vacuum cleaner. My sister told me her friend wanted to get rid of it because the suction had become weaker. All I did was clean the membrane filter and rinse out the sponge filter. It ran perfect. Felt like a steal. Didn't even need tools to open the filter hatch. In defense of the former owner, I didn't know Dysons have filters either, given the fact that they are mainly advertised for their cyclone technology.

This was nearly exactly how I got my current snow blower. It's a 1969 two stage, 24" Arien's Snowthro with an 8hp Tecumseh. I was driving home and it was being wheeled out to the road. I almost hesitated, but I decided to turn around and go check it out. By the time I got there, they had put "free" on it. I asked them about it and they said they couldn't get it running. I figured if it didn't run, it was worth parts and scrap. I then ran home to get my truck to haul it home, which was good timing because someone else had spotted it after I left and come back to check it out, but I got it first!
Got it home and after some tinkering, found out it was just a plugged carb with bad gas in it (always suspect that with engines). Two years after I got it, the engine seized after the main seal failed, but I got a replacement 8hp Briggs reman for a great price of only $140. Since getting it I've put new tires on it, replaced the drive gear and the axle bushings, new belt, did some basic maintenance on it and it's been running great ever since. Too bad that Michigan hasn't gotten enough snow these past two years to use it, though... ugh.
All in all, I think I maybe have around $300 into it, which is not bad since units equivalent to it are $600 or more!

I had 5 of these found on the side of the road toro snow blower’s. Every single one had a bad primer bulb. I replaced all of them and eventually they all fell off again. Well after getting fed up with changing them I stopped replacing them and went with the lazy mans primer. If you need to start them and the bulb falls off “ie. The black rubber part” just blow into it with your mouth and boom 💥 they start every time. Obviously the carb needs to be clean and the fuel fresh but the blow into the hole method works if you have no pumper or compressed air. Also….make sure you put fuel stabilizer in it when you store it, helps alot.

I grew up clearing the driveway every winter with the same old toro snowblower. I’d always figured it was from the late 90s to early 2000, but last year I ran the numbers to find the right replacement blades and carb kit and I found that it was a 1988 model!
After installing those parts it runs like the day it was new (I assume, since it’s older than me!)

  • @jameskenney5623
    @jameskenney5623 2 года назад

I fix hundreds of these a year. All they ever need is just to empty the oil out of the bowl and they'll work perfectly. If you notice it hunting at idle then on the left side of the carb is a black sticker with white writing, there's a pilot jet under that sticker. Just puncture the sticker with a flat head and you can remove it for cleaning.
Also, soaking the primer bulb in hot water helps but obviously you didn't have that option.
Good job, I just sold my last one for $350 plus he also gave me a 22" 5hp that wasn't running.
These toro paddle 2 stroke machines are beasts, they'll outperform almost any other machine.

    Hi Matt.
Finally got to this video, and I like watching them.
I service this type of machinery, and I've never seen a cork float bowl. Plastic and brass yes, cork never, and on a modern machine.
That little brass tube, I call an "emulsifying" tube. It's mixes the air and fuel to the correct ratio to run, instead of having a mixing screw to adjust the tune. It's very important they are clear.
Also have you thought about getting an ultrasound cleaner? They shift stuff carb clean won't or can't get to.
A little air way in that carb could be blocked and causing running problems. It's also a good way to get gummed up carbs apart if you heat the water to 50 degrees centigrade (122F) and vibrated for about 25 mins.
I took a 10 year old gummed up generator carb apart by doing that. The float needle was stuck, the emulsifying tube and main jet were stuck and after 15mins of cooking they all come free.
It finally took 50mins in the ultra sound to clean it, but it was practically spot less compared to what went in.
Also some machinery runs/sounds better under load than running free.
