  • This video shows How to convert a European plug to a UK plug, this is very easy to do and the convertor plugs only cost about £2
    Converting a two-pin plug to three pin plug has never been easier. Remember if you cut off the two pin plug and wire it to a three pin plug you could invalidate the warranty (many manufacturers will try anything to get out of honouring the warranty).

      @@KjartanAndersen Plug are not dependent on power systems. There actually is an international standard but it has been adopted only by South-Africa and Brazil and even the latter modified it. That is a large reason for the confusion. Each country sees necessary to modify the plugs for some reason.

    Good advice. I actually live in NZ now so when I get devices from China with us plugs I just use a pair of pliers to 'coax' the pins into the correct orientation. Note this is usually only small DC adapters that auto convert to 220v. I wouldn't do it with a 110v item unless i was sure it would auto convert but I never see those. I do miss the genius of the UK standards though.

  • @colinhursell9176
    @colinhursell9176 5 лет назад +7

    Those adapters are OK if the appliance is low current (say less than 1 amp or so) but I wouldn’t trust one above that as the contact resistance can be very poor and the adapter could overheat and cause a fire. Not sure you’d be any better off warranty wise either, since if the manufacturer intended the device to be used in the UK they should (by law I believe) have supplied the appropriate power cord. On balance I would prefer to put a proper fused UK plug on the lead.
    One other thing worth exploring is if the lead has a plug at the appliance end as well just replace the whole lead with one that has the correct plugs on both ends. They’re also very inexpensive and easy to come by (EBay, Amazon, etc.). I have half dozen or so of such leads with various combinations of plugs - very useful when travelling with a laptop for example, as you can avoid using foreign adapters which often don’t work well.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  4 года назад

      I'm not sure, but you would have to consider the cost of bringing them back to the UK, or buying new over here, I would assume it would be expensive to bring them back. If it is economical to bring them back, cutting off the existing plug and re-wiring it into a standard 3 pin plug should not be a problem, as you will not need to worry about invalidating any guarantees etc.

In Europlug the prongs are bent inwards. I advice you to get a proper adapter. Sometimes it may simplest just to get a UK charger. They are not expensive. Switzerland has same voltage as UK.

      You'd have to check the instructions, use the appropriate fuse (probably 3 amp) and wire it according to the instructions.
      Blue will likely be Neutral
      Brown will likely be live or switched live
      red could be switched live, or live

      Mostly it does not matter but if it is something that has a switch like a lamp then you can try with a non-contact voltage tester if there is voltage beyond the switch when it is off and reverse the plug if there is. Or you could check continuity from the pin to the screw with a multimeter. The neutral should have continuity.

    I thought it would come with the plug shape that u had in this video....
    That flat type like this emoji🔌
    If u can see it lol.
    And of course it didn't🙄
    I then got the same adaptor u showed, not realising its for shavers so when i plugged it in, the dryer worked for 2 seconds until i changed the heat setting & obviously it cut out.
    Very hard to describe the plug thats on the dryer, it's round, has a cut out shape on the top & bottom & from what i can find on dr google its a type f..... but dont quote me on it.
    I really want to do what you've done at the end, put it into a uk where its fitted, covered & safe.
    Does anyone know of a uk 3 pin adapter that is shaped for the round probably type f eu plug that can go into it.....
    Or, where can i take it to have an electrician cut the plug off & rewire it into a uk plug, is that even an option bcoz obviously i dont want to blow the block up or hurt myself......
    This hairdryer is expensive & it was on sale for a good price so thats why i got it instead of waiting....
    Thinking im gonna have to send it back tho, im just so scared when it comes to electrics, i honestly thought it was gonna be so easy to get an adaptor & its fine🙈😆

    • @okaro6595
      @okaro6595 4 года назад

      @Dirk Diggler AC does not care of polarity most cases. Polarity mainly matters if you have some lamp that has a switch that cuts just one wire. With proper polarity you can ensure that the switch disconnects the line and not the neural so there is no voltage beyond the switch when it is off. In Europe there is 50% chance that there is voltage on the lamp even when it is off. We are taught to unplug before changing the bulb (safe anyway as you may not remember which side is off and which on). I personally think two pole switches should be mandatory for such lamps.For example extension cords with switches do cut both line and neutral.
      Note if you use a UK equipment on a travel adapter in Europe you cannot be sure it connects the same way. Sure the standard in most countries is same as in the UK but in some like Czechia it is the opposite. Also often sockets are wired incorrectly. That is not really an error here, you should do it correctly but if it is wrong that is not a reason to fix it. Speaking of Czechia, they use French plugs that in the grounded version are polarized but as they have different polarization they always will connect it the wrong way.

  • @okaro6595

    1:30 That is a schuko plug, stuffing it is so is especially bad as it will not ground it. There are such plugs actually for schuko also: www.amazon.co.uk/Invero%C2%AE-European-Schuko-Converter-Grounded-Black/dp/B01N6QC1I5
    In most European countries there actually are three different plugs: the flat Europlug is the most common. It is for double insulated devices up to 2.5 A. The grounded schuko is the second (modern plugs work also on French sockets). The least common is the double insulated contour pug that is used on devices that need more than 2.5 A. That is on hair dryers, vacuum cleaners and some tools. The Europlug is only up to 2.5 A as it has too thin pins 4 mm instead of 4.8 mm so that it works also in Italy and Switzerland. The pins are flexible and bent inwards to ensure the contact.
