    Converter plugs are supposed to be safe. The converter is different from an adapter. The UK convertor style plug opens and you put the EU plug inside and place it into the contacts. You then snap the cover back in place and screw it shut. They come with different amp fuses. I was told to use a 3 amp fuse for most uses.
    But I'm just going by Google research!!

    Just a note of the plug top you are using the live & neutral pins are not sleved witch makes it none compliant in uk not bs compliant as its not sleved the white plug top to your right is bs compliant with white sleves on pins can also be black sleeves I'm in no way criticising you at all!! As an electrician & pat tester I'm just passing on my knowledge is all 👏👍🏻

    I bought a motor for my carpet cleaner and it is 2 stage has no earth so do you know if would use the same plug which has an earth as previous motor had an earth connection and that was grounded to the pump on a piggy back and then from there connected to the junction box which went to the plug and I am wondering if I isolate earth with insulation tape

    Hello, great video! I had a question. I am essentially looking to do the opposite and was wondering if that might be possible? I will be going from Ireland (UK plug) to Portugal (EU plug) soon and was wondering about plugs etc. do you think it would be ok just to buy an EU kettle lead plug for my things that use a kettle lead? my monitor for example.

    I always cut EU plugs off portable electrical items such as table lambs, hair dryers, pumps and toothbrush chargers even if they
    come with a EU to UK converter plug. Reasons for doing this is because I think a proper plug is far safer although it's better to fit a
    plug with shrouded pins. It also ensures that the electrical items are polarized and removes the ability to plug inappropriate things
    into a shaver socket.

      not every plug has an earth wire

    • @grassytramtracks
      @grassytramtracks Год назад +2

      Not every plug, even in the UK, has an earth wire, in fact we in the UK don't use the earth wire any more often than in the rest of Europe. It's just that we always have an earth pin to physically open the shutters over the live and neutral - things that are double insulated (meaning that there is an extra layer insulating the live and neutral wires from any exposed metal on the outside, such as having a plastic case), like hair tools, lamps, power tools, vacuum cleaners, blenders, fans, and most things to be honest, aren't earthed, even in the UK and are safe to use without an earth

      European appliances can be safely used with the live and neutral either way around because you can insert the plug either way around so it should be fine whichever way

      @@grassytramtracks but.. surely it does matter, because an English socket is wired with the live on the right hand side?? And to ahve the live wire on the plug going in through the left socket would mean it wasn’t earthed??

      No. Not all appliances in the UK are earthed, and the UK doesn't use earth any more or less often than Europe. Double insulated appliances, those that don't have a metal case don't need an earth to be used safely

    • @malwill54
      @malwill54 3 года назад +1

      This is for AC connections. If you connect a dc appliance it often has a transformer attached to step down the Voltage from 240V AC to 12V DC, so that should be Ok BUT! if it is an appliance or a lamp for 12v DC use such as a car head light and you plugged into the mains . KERPOW! lamp or appliance frazzled. Never put a DC appliance into AC outlets, you're asking for trouble.

      Check the rating plate on your appliance for the power. Anything under ~ 700 W will need a 3A fuse, over that will need a 13 A fuse.

      Not recommended because the US uses 100-110v as in the UK here. Our 240v AC would fry the appliance. Same with anything imported from Japan. It would need a step down transformer. Hope this helps.
