Diane, I feel like I repeat myself constantly when I leave you daily comments, but you so deserve them and it just doesn't feel right not to tell you (even though I know I am repeating myself) how much I enjoy your tutorials. I have a daily morning routine of making my slow pour over coffee and sipping it while I watch you paint and hear you share your comments and thoughts. Your brush strokes are so relaxing to watch and your voice so calming. Then you mix it up with your fun humor, "the brush police." You honestly are so fun to hang out with and you have a gift of really making your followers feel that you are hanging with us. Pine cones are one of my favorite, along with acorns and oak leaves. You really made this one beautiful, and achievable and I thank you as always. So there you go...another repetitive comment from one of your many loyal fans. Tamsin, beautiful photography and sound. What a talented team! So excited to seem more of the winter themed cards you will create. Thanks for taking the time to show us how to sketch this beauty. Watching you sketch is an added treat.
Carolyn please don't think of stopping making your comments! I really enjoy reading them, and for me also it's a morning routine with my first cup of coffee while I feed Arthur in the studio! So motivating and positive to have such detailed and supportive comments to start the day! Thank you again for every word, it does not go unappreciated, and not at all repetitive. Tamsin feels the same way, and thanks you too. I wonder what the winter theme will bring too. I never know what is going to come out the end of the brush, water brush or trad brush!! Have fun today, happy painting!
@Carolyn Daughton I realize I’m replying to a comment you made (at least) a year ago, but as I have just recently discovered the encouraging, empowering talents, shared in the videos from Ms.@Diane Antone Studio, all the videos/comments you posted might as well have been the words that were in my head.
Mel, I love your message! I tell everyone I know that appreciates painting, even if they don't know how to paint yet to subscribe and "like" her videos. Diane works so hard to make her channel meaningful and informative and I'm excited to see her channel member numbers grown. Thank you again for your kind comment.
Aside from you lovely instruction (oh, how you motivate me!), your commentary always makes me chuckle. Thank you for both.
Just starting watercolor and stumbled upon your tutorials. Not only is your teaching method easy, instructive, creative and fun but I'm staying because of your quippy dialog. :Thank you :)
That’s so good to hear! Welcome to the channel, and I hope to hear from you often! Wishing you a Merry Christmas, and a happy New Year!
Absolutely stunning.❤
I enjoyed this one very much
My 105 th. What a good way to paint such a detailed subject so loosely but still convincing. Every day one could learn from you. Thanks😊wim
Thanks for sharing so pretty
Love what you can do
Love my water brush. Caroline in USA
As I said before, you have taken the mystery out of pine cones for me. But want to say how much I love Arthur’s purring! Makes me smile every time! A happy, happy thing!❤️
Arthur says I'm honored!
Thanks! Lovely!
Outstanding Diane 😊
Love this! I have to agree with you about Bretons. I was an exchange student and I stayed in Noyal sur Villaine. This was back in the 70s. At 5’7” I was taller than everyone. When my dad came to visit it went around the village like a wildfire. “Look at the American! Qu’il est grand! Dad was six feet tall. 😂😂
Oh yes, I can imagine!!! A man standing only 5ft high is not at all unusual. I‘m only 5ft 3ins and I‘m certainly not seen as short here. Apart from people’s height, Brittany has changed a lot though since the 70s!
Beautiful
You are amazing ! Thanks
Cool ❤
Its pretty!
LOVELY🥰
Hello I am just learning things. Love the bamboo pen and effects. Can't wait to try what you are teaching me. I have a couple of artist grands I will share with.I am also a Diane, you are an inspiration .Thank You 👏
That’s wonderful to hear! I really love to hear about kids learning to paint, it’s so good for them! Thanks so much for your kind words xx
Diane.....love watching you 'muddle' through the process and turn out a first rate pinecone. It's very brave of you to sit down and film that process not knowing exactly how things will develop. I'm learning to step out there with a little more confidence that whatever happens on the paper is either fixable or a learning experience. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks so much for your interesting and helpful comment. I do feel that there is not much point in a teacher using the video as a platform to demonstrate a perfect piece. We all learn by doing, and art especially is an organic process. When I start a painting, whether on or off video, I never know where it will go. I never even TRY to know where it will go. And that's the skill I want you all to develop. That way you'll find your own style.

White Pines are common around me and they are elegant. The needles are softly flexible, not prickly to handle. It's the only pine whose needles grow in bundles if 5 - which you can remember because of the 5 letters in the name: w-h-i-t-e. Thanks for the tutorial.
Oh lovely, thanks for the info, useful to know for someone who doesn't have them around them. We have a lot of pines but not those. Climate must be wrong. Glad you're enjoying the tutorials!
I recently stumbled upon your videos and you are inspiring me to give this a try! I'm so excited!
Thanks so much and a very happy holidays to you and your loved ones xxxx
Thanks so much. I painted a pinecone today. It's not perfect but I'm happy with it. I love your farm and your precious pups!!! I have surgery in December so watercolor has helped me focus on all good things. We have white pines here in the Carolinas. I appreciate you so much!!!!!
Hi Wanda, so glad you enjoyed the pinecone, and thanks for your kind comments about our place. Much appreciated! I'd like to send you my very best wishes for your surgery in December and hope it all goes well. Thanks again, and happy painting! xxx
The white gouache was a great idea. Thanks, as usual, Diane. I so enjoy your sense of humor. Brush police, short Bretons? and not wanting to talk about W&N paint fade. Too funny!
You are so welcome! Thanks for appreciating my daft comments! xx
I enjoyed watching you paint the pine cone Diane. I’ll give it a go with my Windsor and Newton watercolor. I find W&N the best for rich, natural pigment that lightens some but not too much. I laughed out loud when you said “I don’t want to talk about it.” How many times I’ve felt that way when painting! I’m grateful to you and all the other watercolorists on RUclips that share your knowledge. I don’t think I’d be very good at it since I don’t enjoy talking while I paint, unless I’m yelling at a piece that isn’t turning out the way I’d planned, lol. Watercolor truly has a mind of its own. Blessings to you!
Hi Rita, thanks for your lovely comment! I have never really complained about the fading of W&N, just took it into consideration when painting, knowing it would dry several shades lighter. But after using the Viviva sheets for a while I notice the difference much more. Perhaps I'm thinking that with all the technological advances science has brought, it is less than reasonable to still use binders developed essentially in the 18th century? I haven't really thought about it like that before, as I am really a traditionalist and I like the old ways of doing things. So I'll let W&N carry on doing what they do best, and I do like their subtle colors, and maybe I'll invest in a set of Qor and see how that goes! Very happy to share my gems of "wisdom" with you - that's what it's all about, isn't it! P.S. a year ago I was cringing at the thought of talking through my videos. You do get used to it eventually!!! Happy painting!
Thank you so much. As a newbie, I struggle to figure out how to represent a shape in watercolors. You're so encouraging, and your videos are very helpful. Thank you so much!
You are so welcome Margot!
The pine cone is lovely! It lifts my spirits, after yesterday, September 11 here in the USA. Thanks, I so enjoy your birds.
Thanks! So glad you enjoyed it!
Diane, I love your ramblings. I understand completely. LOL.
I struggled before Christmas to teach myself to draw a pine cone. Drove myself crazy trying to make it perfect. I love 'impression' painting but it is hard. Like you said trying to connect the dots......
TIP: I stuck the handle of a paint brush in a pencil sharpener. It wasn't doing anything else, so I made use of it LOL.
You are so welcome!
I love this, Diane! Although I can admire those who paint in a photo realistic way, if I wanted that, I'd hang a real photo on the wall! I love the looser style of painting. So in my eyes, you're painting style is perfect!
Oh and Arthur!!!! Awwww! I adore him!
So true! A lot of skill in it, admirable. Often, photo real painters say they wish they could loosen up. Funny, isn't it!
Yes. I think that's true in many cases though. We always wish we had what we don't possess. Heck! I wish I could have thick hair and weigh 125 lbs. LOL
I enjoy your work tremendously and your humorous tidbits make it all the better!
I love this. Thank you for sharing this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ha! Tidy except for your bedroom. I know the feeling. QOR paints have a drying shift as well. Earth tones I think shift more when drying. W&N has the most vibrant burnt sienna I've found. There's a brand from the Ukrainian I found on Amazon US that has very little shift. It's called ROSA , it's honey based and very affordable but only available in full pans not tubes. Good pigment strength and rewets easily. Though they do use PG8 which is not particularly lightfast for a green. The QOR high chroma set of 6 is fun. Thanks Diane. I very much enjoy painting with you.
I’ve watched this twice. I love it! Gonna try it. 🙏💙🌵
Thanks Delphine, hope you enjoyed the cone!
Oh my goodness what a sweet angel! Love her purring!! I also laughed out loud with your remark; “except my bedroom”! I so enjoy your videos and hope to try this one. I have a tendency to use too much water so this would be a great practice for me to “dry up” a bit!! Thank you for your teachings!! 💐
Thank you so much! Arthur says hi !!! So glad you're finding the tutorials helpful!
love this. Thank you.
Thanks so much Darya!
Thank you Diane, really lovely
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks so much!
I love this loose pine cone and the bamboo pen is a revelation! Thank you for sharing so much of your work. Love watching you.😊
I love how you explained why, and how to get started. Also how you told a little story with you explanation made it feel like chatting with a friend! 🤗❤️👍🏾💯
So glad you enjoyed the video! Welcome to the channel and sending you joy for Christmastide xxx
Thank you for another beautiful, relaxing video. I just feel so calm as I watch you create and "muddle" about your paintings. The background music matches perfectly.
Hi Diane, I’d recommend you try the QoR Earth Set first, and the High Chroma Set, of course. Do not be put off by the 5ml tube size in these sets, I can assure you from my own experience that the pigment is so intense you will use significantly less paint. People complain about the tube size vs price BUT you’ll ultimately get 2 - 3X more painting out of a QoR tube compared to a tube of DS, MG, or WN. I’m truly looking forward to watching you discover the beauty and unique quirks of painting with QoR, I think you’ll love it! Take Care.
Thanks so much for the recommendation and thoughts about the Qor paints. I'll definitely give them a try! I will wait till after my birthday next week just in case anyone has bought me a set, and then if not I'll go ahead and order some. I'm not put off by the small tubes, I usually buy 5ml tubes anyway and they last quite a while for me in any case. Thanks again, very helpful!!
I love it! You make it seem so doable. I'll have to try this one out
I love it! Don’t really long for the winter yet (they are long and dark here in Sweden) but this gives me a nice winter feeling. Must try some pine cones 😊
Same here! Don't like the dark humidity we have all winter. But do like the pine cones!
I'm coming there. Most adults in America are giants. I'm 5'3" too to feel big. Love the pine cone!
ha ha, you'll be welcome!!
❤️❤️❤️🥰😊
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Fun, will definitely be painting these❣️
Have fun!
Looks great, fun but not fussy. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Fun, easy painting! I love pinecones and have struggled with how to paint them. This is a lovely result! I used a chopstick for the needles and it worked perfectly. Thanks for this video!
Going to give this a try. So pretty for a Christmas card. “Running out of steam!” 😊 ❤️
Yup! Thanks!
Magically transformed quickly, easily and brilliantly Diane! A pleasure to watch your technique. I will be trying this! Thank you.
Thanks again Raechelle, so glad you found me!
Beautiful Diane! I do love pinecones, there's something very lovely and autumnal/wintry about them! xx
Me too!! We usually have a collection of them near the fireplace but I think we had to burn them last year because the dogs were eating them!
@@DianeAntoneStudio When I lived in New England, my dog used to love to eat them (outside) - so there must be something that attracts them. They're great for firestarters, and you can add some wax to them to make them pretty and be even more flammable! LOL! xx
Thankyou for the lovely tutorial. I've been training myself to paint on an iPad using Adobe Fresco while following painter's videos. It's a great way to learn the software. If my orange tabby were better behaved I'd try regular paints but that would be very trying with him, he has to be in the middle of anything I'm doing.
Glad it was helpful! Arthur is the same, he wants to interfere, but when he goes to sleep in his basket I can get on with things! I have adobe but I haven't heard of fresco. I'll have to take a look! I did try digital painting a few years ago but gave it up after a while.
Very nice! Delicate needles with the bamboo pen.
Thanks Annemieke, glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you - that was so great and easy to do following along with you. Fun!
Glad you enjoyed it! Just got to master those cones before Christmas, eh?
@@DianeAntoneStudio I love your snowman too
I love this! This is my first time watching you and think you are darling! I’m going to give it a try. I need to work on not connecting things. Thank you for sharing your talent!
Welcome to the channel! So glad you found me and thanks so much for your kind comment! Hope you paint loads of my tutorials!
Thank you so much for this! I’ve been struggling with pinecones and they’re one on my most favorite things. I left you a pic in Instagram messages. I’ll keep working on it 😝
They are horribly difficult. You are quite right. I'll check out your pic on instagram soon, and yes, they are an ongoing project!
You definitely made me giggle with your ‘I don’t want to talk about it’ comment. I even say this to myself sometimes 😆
Oh that fade back!!!!!!!!
Your pine cone is soooooo Beautiful. I love the simplicity of it! I am looking forward to getting the summer" hedge grove," was it(?) book. I have TV and sound going, my own selective hearing loss going and had the computer sound a little low so I may have gotten the name of the book wrong. It's Christmas night here in USA and I'm thinking of your summer book full of your wonderful drawings! Also, I love how you start your videos with the animals and such a sweet kitty at the end of this one. I'm so happy I found YOU! Thank you for being such a great art teacher....😍💌❤🩹❤
That was great. Water brush, who knew. It gives great results. I wonder if you laid down a light wash…?
When examining a white pine the needles are in bunches of 5 and at the base it looks.like.they are connected with small.light brown ice cream.cone gathering them. But you did nail.the pine cone.
I don’t aim for exactitude so thanks for that x
You can do the green lines with brushs too ha? And you can start painting first no drawing. If that was a paint pen or not or was it a fancy brush?
did you use a regular eraser to erase the pencil marks? Thank you very much for your video!
Diane, I love this. You inspire me so much. Can I ask you where I can purchase a bamboo pen like you used for the pine needles please? I live in the U.S. thanks!❤
THIS IS A PUBLIC APOLOGY. I have neglected to mention on the Learn to Paint FB group that my attempt at the pine cone was based on this tutorial. My attempts to apologise on the group was declined several times. I have only tried a few of these tutorials and I have learned some things. Thank you for your time Ms Antone. I apologise again if I have offended you.
Hi Dawn, thank you for your comment. I’ve messaged you on Facebook so we can get to the bottom of this. Please don’t worry, it’s not us declining things, so it must be the Facebook group’s automatic moderation tool.
This is lovely! Where does one purchase the cute little ceramic dishes that you keep your watercolors in?
The nearest I have been able to find is this on Amazon. Mine were hand made years ago and inherited from a friend who died - but these are even better: amzn.to/3nxppmX

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you! Sending you joy this Christmastide!
I enjoyed painting with you but my pinecone looked a bit like Indian corn and my sister thinks hers resembles a possum.
Ha ha, you don't see MY failures! it's a tricky subject!!!!!
Thank you for this! I am interested in getting a bamboo pen like you used for the pine needles. I searched the internet, but perhaps since I don't know the proper name for it, I can't find it. What is it called, or where did you find yours? Thank you!
Hi Karen, and thanks so much for your message! Here is a link to Amazon showing you a bamboo pan like the one I use; amzn.to/3n8i6Cm Hopefully that will set you on the right track!
