He’s using the edge of his hand where the low E meets the saddle. Uses his hand like a bow. That’s what’s getting that cello like sound in the very beginning. Not the pick. He does the same right before the outro to “Lighting Up the Sky” of VHII. But you gotta rub your hand basically just about at the saddle to get it to work. Use the same part of your hand and the motion you’d use on the intro to Atomic Punk. Just down by the saddle.

Marty, thanks for the lesson! I'm curious how you got all the wear on your fretboard? These EVH Frankenstein Strats haven't been out that long. Is it from playing, or did you do something else?
Man. It's been played a lot. Tons of shows during the past couple of summers. But mostly I think it's just grubby. I have not cleaned it yet! I think it looks cool. 😄🤟🏻
Great job but you're missing 2 important notes in the chorus part, after the A chord Eddie quickly hits and bends an Fsharp note on the E string before striking the D chord then after the D chord quickly he hits and slides a note on the D string 4th fret 1 whole step to the 2nd fret before going back to the E chord. It happens quickly but gives the song its swing, listen to the instrumental version of this song, it really stands out.
Great tutorial! The band I play with started jamming this, hopefully live soon and goes over if we can do well. Your dog steals the show. I want to pet him! My apologies if it's a girl.

I tried playing this song from the sheet music, but I couldn’t even come close to sounding like the record. It has many nuances that can’t be captured in sheet music.
I totally understand. Sheet music and tab is a great reference. But songs like this I think you have to really use your ear and fill in the void. So much of VH was like that. And Eddie's style was so unique it's hard to figure out what the heck he's doing sometimes as well! Thanks for watching man!
Eddie does grab that G on quite a few songs in passing but I am just not hearing it here. I went back for a listen and nothing. I think he may have been going for that contrast between the two chords and heavy and then light touch. He didn't want to goof it around too much. Especially that early in the tune.

In my my mind I believe they fucked up during the breakdown but just kept it in. At 3:36 Dave starts to say " I like the way..." but Eddie crushes him out with a massive power chord. Dave resets and says it again correctly with Eddie back filling. No sure who was at fault, my guess Dave, but it is very cool and as I say very much a mistake that they said fuck it the take is to good like ride. Just like alot of other classic rock songs out there, mistakes become part of the song. That is real rock and roll!

I noticed it was so much easier to learn how to play guitar when I was 14 everything my friends taught me stuff I could remember till I was my ripe old age I am now. but I didn't continue lessons and I just put the guitar down which I shouldn't have done because everything was coming so easily, I just focused on the drums and became a drummer, so like a dumbass,🤔😐 I waited till I was 59 to start trying to learn how to play guitar and it's a b**** It Ain't Easy. when you're older, it's much easier when younger so you younger guys out there start now don't wait till you're older cuz it comes very easy when you're young. it's a b**** when you're older. I mean I'm making progress but not like I did when I was 14 I switched to the drums and I should have kept doing both. hindsight's a b****. Unless you're a virtuoso and have natural abilities it takes years to become a full-fledged guitarist. You know there's so much to it and all the techniques and getting your fingers to do certain things that they don't like to do that kind of stuff was easier when I was 14, I learned House of the Rising Sun in a couple minutes and could play it and remembered it all my life but that ain't a guitarist you got to learn a bunch of s*** some people learn quick some people take longer but when you're older don't care how old you are it's tough It's much tougher you can do it, it just ain't as easy. so rock on young ones learn now don't wait till you're older.

@@jimmyjames7946 I'd like to compare mine to some others and see what they are like. I wish there was a local EVH Frankie Club. Like a corvette club or motorcycle club. Haha.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker lol.. I'm in Nashville also I'll let you know when I have mine maybe we can start one 🤘🤘lol

Pretty cool lesson video 😎
Thanks Phillip! 😎☮️
Fantastic job
Eddie certainly loved turning his guitar into a synthesizer
He loved to create weird sounds for sure. Very creative.
Eddie always called his playing to " chasing tones".

Unreal. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome my friend!! Thanks for watching dude.
Awesome lesson!!! Your tone is phenomenal…… what amp and effects are you using?
Thanks! For RUclips it's a fractal ax8 in stereo. Friedman be setting and Friedman IRs. I add delay and verb in protools just for mixing purposes. 👍
Yes you're right man! I did indeed forget to mention that! 😎☮️
the chorus part isnt quite right. Eddie hits that little g bend before hit nails the d chord not the a chord ;) killer tone man, love your setup too!
Thanks so much man! 🤟🏻😎
Great tutorial! The band I play with started jamming this, hopefully live soon and goes over if we can do well. Your dog steals the show. I want to pet him! My apologies if it's a girl.

Hi Marty. I was wondering how you were going to use the time up on this song, perfectly executed.
Thanks Douglas. There's always more than meets the eye when you start digging into these VH tunes! 😎🤟🏻

I think you're seeing my Marshall G100? The solid state amp back there? Also there's a Marshall 3023 artist back there too.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Yup. Same thing basically just an earlier? model maybe?

Indeed! 🙏❤️
If you listen real close at the end you can hear Dave say
" - What the fuck? I'll pay ya for it..."
great lesson thanks for sharing.
You're very welcome man! Thanks. 😎🙌
I want some!! Tell the wife!! She's not listening!Lol 🤣 Nice job Marty thanks
I want some too!

Not sure what I'd choose off III, not too much in there entices me to learn it. DKOT is a cool album. I have considered some tracks off there like She's The Woman or Beats Workin. 🙌

Not in the weeds man, I'm right with you on what made VH so great. What band today has the depth this band had? A: No one.
wabi sabi = perfectly imperfect. VH knew how to do it. Cut the album in a week, no fooling around with fixing what ain't broke
He sure did man!
Great lesson again! Thanks! BTW you should fix the position of that Metallica bowling bowl … Kept thinking it was gonna topple over after hitting one of those delicious EVH power chord progressions! 😂

24/7 Van Halen 🎸🎸🎸
Yes indeed! 🥂🎵🙌
"How much? I'll pay you for it. WTF."....
😎🎵🎵🤟🏻
Dave was doing his Tarzan impersonation 🤪
Totally! 😂😂😂
Everybody wants some? I want to pet the dog?
You can tell they kept the first cut because Dave came in at the wrong time on one verse.
Yeh I agree. I love how Eddie just blasts him away. Haha.

Jeez! i never win anything. So, what did I win?
