Hellraiser (1987) - Movie Review. I've Never Understood the Hype

- While considered an iconic film and franchise, I've never understood the hype behind Hellraiser. There's things I like about it and I can see why it was ground breaking, but it always felt completely mediocre. Who you calling Pinhead?

I was more surprised pinhead wasn't the focus but it doesn't devalue the movie
Blasphemy, I say. I never watched this movie as a kid, but i watched it in recent years and thoroughly loved it. Pinhead became one of my favorite halloween villains from just the first one, and the sequel was arguably better. I implore you watch the second one. The shots in the cenobites world were actually nightmare fuel. I would say go no further than 2 because that's when the movies go more comedy like all other long-running horrors.
I'll probably give some others a go at some point just to finish out another franchise, but I haven't heard anything good about any past 2. Thanks for the comment!
The film is of its time and was made on a very shoe string budget. Its a Faithfull adaptation of the short story which is fantastic.
The central character is Frank and the book goes into much more into his character.his nihilism and boredom of the world and why he sort the puzzle box and its promises of new experiences.
He regretted it very quickly.
Pinhead barely gets a mention and all the cenobites are equel.
Like I say I think it's fair to say it's of its time and having watched it in the 80s I can regard it as a classic. It was a different time. I wouldn't blame anyone seeing it now for not liking it
I did not know that Frank is actually the central focus of the book. Thanks for the info!
@@SeanKennyYT yes and his sister in law are central to the book as he manipulates her need for excitement and a memory of a one off affair. The ultimate treat em mean keep em keen kind of guy. He was going to ditch her within days of his full regeneration and freedom.
@@chagadiel I always felt like they didn't nail that point home. When you find out about his box of photos and how he acts towards her as it goes on but she's kind of blind to it all. Maybe that's the whole point though
yes ... in the book it is just cenobites... No Pinhead... The leader was the Engineer which is not in the movie... Think Clive made "Pinhead" front to give his friend Doug Bradley a more prominent role, but i could be wrong .... Anyways, Doug Bradley nailed the role as Pinhead ;)
Im quite a fan of Hellraiser and its a very personal project to Clive Barker and the scenes he explored. Its also amazingly influential, especially on Berserk where the godhand were directly inspired by cenobites
@@cal5365 It seems like a love hate thing for most people. I'm actually somewhere in the middle on it. A lot of people on here love it though
The novels are extremely well written and Clive Barker wrote some pretty good stuff back then. The books mixed in a crazy amount of sex, blood, and violence. But yeah, I really enjoyed watching these when I was a kid, _yes I was a kid when I saw these,_ but yeah I had a blast watching these movies up until they went to space, LOL. I guess it's not for everyone, I usually tell folks if they want to watch it, they should star with Hellraiser 3 and if they are still interested then explore. But I really do think it's iconic, but for theatre kids for the most part since it's themes usually center round other topics.
@@Unworshipediety as a kid is wild Haha but we all had our gateway films. I didn't even know these were based on books. Thanks for the info!
You ain't alone, I never felt the urge to see these back in the day.
Makes me feel less crazy
I recently watched the Hellraiser 1 & 2 for the first time because of a friend.
She was happy that I enjoyed them but was surprised I don't care about the Cenobites or Pinhead.
And I told her the mystery behind the (Cube) Lament Configuration Puzzle Box is what carries the movies for me.
I cared more about the Puzzle Box and who's gonna trigger it over the Cenobites themselves.
UNTIL SHE SHOWED ME THE REMAKE a week ago, the Female Pinhead is what made me a fan.
The Female Pinhead is WAY BETTER, she's there from the beginning to end, and the movie focused on her along the female protagonist, it was the 1st time I watched the movie for Pinhead.
I dont care about what came before.
Now I want to see a Hellraiser sequal with the female Pinhead.
@@OmenLamb absolutely agree with you. I really liked the remake and think she was a better Pinhead and focal point. Really hope we get a sequel
@@SeanKennyYT EXACTLY.
We've already seen the Shark, so why hide it in the sequals, the surprise factor is gone.
There is a reason Predator 2 had Danny Glover and the Predator be there from beginning to end, the more Friday the 13th movies we got the more Jason focused they became.
I never understood why the Hellraiser films just don't make Pinhead the Cenobites the main focus, especially when they are the main attraction.
The Remake fixed this issue and I am intrgued.
@@OmenLamb If I have my choice of a hellraiser to pick and watch I'm picking the remake 10/10 times. Just has way more production and entertainment value
Clive Barker has always been synonym with demons, the obscurity and body horror.... Compared to other movies of the same period, it still holds up today... Watched it the first time when i was 8 (Horror movies only works when you are a kid ^^ ) and actually just binge watched all of them not long ago ... Must say: i was not dissapointed .... They all still have great entertainment value and the sequels are not as bad as people make them out to be ...
Ok ... Maybe the one with Henry Cavill... Hellworld ..I think :)
@@DannyKa-x8z haha a few people have mentioned Henry Cavill. I'm curious if you've seen/like the Hulu remake one?
I like Clive's Nightbreed WAY more than Hellraiser.
@@theScrupulousBerserker I can get behind this
I’ve never watched a single hell raiser movie so I can’t say really anything about it. I just know there’s a character named pinhead lol
@@RavensOsFan89 that's about all you need to know 😂
I like the remake which I think you will probably enjoy more. You don’t need to watch the other films in order to understand it. Great review as always ❤
@@graveyardkey Ive seen that one! Really enjoyed it and like it more than this original tbh, unpopular opinion
@@SeanKennyYT I’m with you. I like the first 2 hellraisers then the one with Henry Cavil I forget the name lol but yeah it’s my favorite as well. It established the lore of the cenobites better than the other films
@@graveyardkey I feel like it did what most people come to these movies for - used the cenobites and is more modern horror and technical, which I usually get more out of than older counterparts. Also another hot take - the new girl is an awesome and better Pinhead
@@SeanKennyYT Her voice sounds better to me than Doug Bradley in my opinion so I have to agree with everything you said. It was way more effective using the world of the cenobites and how the rules actually work
@@graveyardkey it felt like they were more threatening and meant business. In the original they kind of show up then go MIA 🤣 in the new one it feels like theyre inevitable
I'm not gonna change your mind or anything but practical effects make it better.
If you were expecting Freddy going in, of course you'd be disappointed. It's about Frank and Julia.
It's about becoming numb to sensation and those of us that feel dead inside get it. There's more bad Hellraiser movies than good i will say that
@@greenkoopa Im not even in the camp that hates it, I've just never understood how it stands out amongst all the other 80s originals we got
@SeanKennyYT I feel that way about the first 2 Jason and Halloween movies.
They're boring and slow.
Frank coming back was a masterpiece pf cinema and its why people come back still. Just like the trex escape, one great scene can carry a franchise.
My favorite Hellraiser is 3 I think it's really fun
@@greenkoopa all fair points. Sometimes I like hearing from super fans of genres/movies I am not big into or that I hear big things about what they love about them. I have only seen HR 1/2 so I can't speak on 3 currently
Still haven't seen it. Not rushing.
@@arberreka2242 if you've made it this far, don't bother
Oh dear.
Have to admit I've never watched these either 😅
@@brianclaudio1942 I'm telling you this is the longest running franchise that no one cares about 😂 I feel like almost no one I talk movies with in person has seen it
@@SeanKennyYT it's strange indeed 😆 Apparently it's more of a niche franchise I assume.
@SeanKennyYT My younger brother saw one that I think got recently released to Hulu and he said he liked it quite a bit. Maybe at some point I'll give this franchise a whirl...
@brianclaudio1942 I do enjoy that one on Hulu and id recommend it. It's completely different than these older ones
@SeanKennyYT ok thank you for the additional reconmend!
I've watched some of the hell riser series but i like the remake with female pinhead better, maybe because older part of the films felt quite outdated and poorly executed, and the budget got downgraded after each film, but still i hope they make sequal to the remake. ❤️⛓️📍🩸
I agree! I really enjoyed the new version and her Pinhead. Haven't heard anything on it but hope we get a sequel to it
