This was an especially important film for the Muppets, as their first full project since the death of Jim Henson which would be a sign of whether the brand would be able to continue without him. And Steve Whitmire had an especially intimidating job, taking over Kermit while also having to perform some heavy emotional scenes with very un-Kermit lines straight from the book, on top of his also sizable role as Rizzo. Then he had a dream where Henson told him he'd be great in the role, and it came true. The movie was a huge hit, and even also revived Michael Caine's career as he'd suffered a bunch of flops in the '80s that had many wondering if he was done after aging out of the roles he'd first built his career on.

The Muppets Christmas Carol was Brian Hensons directorial debut. It was the first Muppets film to be produced following the deaths of Muppets creator Jim Henson and performer Richard Hunt; the film is dedicated to both.
The English actors David Hemmings, Ron Moody (Fagin in Oliver), and David Warner and the American comedian George Carlin were considered to portray Ebenezer Scrooge. Henson later offered the role to Michael Caine, who replied: "I'm going to play this movie like I'm working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I will never wink, I will never do anything Muppety. I am going to play Scrooge as if it is an utterly dramatic role and there are no puppets around me."
Production took place at the Shepperton Studios, England. During filming, in order to allow for the Muppets and the human actors to be in the shot, floors had to be removed and re-inserted, with Michael Caine having to walk across narrow planks between the Muppets and their performers.
Well done for watching the extended cut, which features the song “When Love is Gone”. Disney cut this from the theatrical release, as they found it too downbeat.

"If you please Mr. Scrooge, it's gotten colder, and the bookkeeping staff would like to have an extra shovel full of coal for the fire?"
"We can't do the bookkeeping, all our pens have turned to inkcicles!"
    "Our assets are frozen!"
"How would the bookkeepers like to be suddenly... UNEMPLOYED?"
"[singing] HEAT WAVE. This is my island in the sun..."
Fun Fact: Before production began, Sir Michael Caine told director Brian Henson he was going to play Scrooge straight. Henson agreed it was a great idea. Sir Michael Caine considers the role of Scrooge to be one of his most memorable (to him).
Torch Passed Fact: This was the first major Muppet project after creator Jim Henson's death. The role of Kermit the Frog was handed down to Steve Whitmire. He said he was incredibly nervous about taking over such an iconic character. The night before he recorded Kermit's songs for the movie, he had a dream where he met Henson in a hotel lobby and told him how unsure he was. In the dream, Henson reassured Whitmire that the feeling would pass. After waking up, Whitmire was confident and able to do the part.
Music Enthusiast Fact: The song "When Love Is Gone" sung by Belle, was dropped from the theatrical release (over the objections of producer and director Brian Henson) at the request of Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg, who considered it too sad for young children.) The last-minute decision resulted in a jarring edit in the scene from which it was removed, and caused some confusion about Scrooge, Gonzo, and Rizzo's reactions. The scene was restored in the VHS, LaserDisc, and first DVD (full screen) releases, but it isn't used in television airings, Blu-ray releases, or the Netflix or the original Disney+ version. However, it is available as an "EXTRAS" option on Disney+. In mid-December 2020, Brian Henson announced that the original negatives for the removed scene had been found and would be re-instated (back) into the film, in time for its 30th anniversary in 2022.

As it says in the beginning of the film, this film was in honor of the creator of the Muppets, Jim Henson, since this was the first Muppet project to be made after his passing...so the small eulogy to Tiny Tim in the film is also a bit of a eulogy to Jim from his son Brian (the director of this film) two years after his passing.

Actually, an idea I saw online I'd love to see is The Muppets sitting around and playing a Dungeons and Dragons game, and every time they depicted the fictional world of the game, the party would be played by a celebrity guest cast but lip-synching to the corresponding Muppet player's voice.

I had this on VHS and the songs where there except for the love interest's song which was cut out. This is a really good adaptation, but there's one thing they pretty much took out from Scrooge's childhood backstory - In the story his older sister (Nephew Fred's mother) was the only one who cared to bring him home for Christmas, she was the light and joy of his life. But later on she died and that made Scrooge bitter. If I remember it right she died on Christmas and that became one of his reasons to hate it. Well, there is a Muppet version of Treasure Island, Muppet's Treasure Island, with Tim Curry as Long John Silver.

I had one of the rare versions of the VHS that had the song. Until I started seeing reviews talking about a missing scene and song, i had no idea there was a VHS without it. I think it skews the pacing a tiny bit but the song adds so much.

I have this on VHS and the song is NOT cut out in mine, and I watched it religiously as a kid, every year if not multiple times a year. Once I had to get it on DVD because I no longer had a VCR I was shocked and thoroughly upset when that song and scene were just missing! It was an outrage! I'm so happy they finally found the lost footage and re-edited the film to put it back in as it was originally and had been intended to be seen in the first place.

So there's a few behind the scenes things that I want to mention. The first is in the 90s there were three Muppet movies that were produced this was the first and it was after Jim's death( they also lost one of their puppeteers Richard Hunt who died shortly before the release of this film). When getting ready for the release of the film Jeffrey Katzenberg(the K in Dreamworks SKG) being the petty asshole that he frequently is insisted that Brian cut the musical scene involving Belle singing The Breakup Song( a fight that he had tried and lost in The Little Mermaid with Part of Your World). Katzenberg one for the theatrical release but for the home video release Henson reasoned that "it's home video you can fast forward the bloody song put the musical number back in" So on home video, LaserDisc and the first DVD release, they used this extended version but when they started to pump out the Blu-ray copies they couldn't find the master print that had the song . And the theatrical version is the one that ended up on Disney Plus. 2 years ago after scouring the Disney vaults for 28 years they were finally able to find that Master print. They have spent the last 2 years restoring the film as well as cleaning it up to bring it up to the Blu-ray quality that is on Disney Plus. And there is many fans who prefer the extended edition because of the fact that it gives the extra context particularly when they do the reprise When Love is found at the end of the film. The reason that they do the abuse to that poor little bunny, is because apparently during that time the puppeteers were trying to make new Muppets in order to try and boost their ratings as it were. And none of the puppeteers liked the bunny because it was just too stinking cute so anytime they got a chance to beat the hell out of him they did. And yes they definitely beat the hell out of Rizzo too in this movie and it is glorious. If you are looking for unconventional holiday films if you haven't seen them I do recommend the first to Die Hard films, the 1st Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, obviously Gremlins( potentially Gremlins The New Batch although I cannot remember if that one actually takes place during the holiday), Ghostbusters 2 which takes place at New Year's and of course Batman Returns which does take place at Christmas. You can also throw in Shazam which is also a Christmas movie

If you want more Muppets, I must recommend one of the best, Muppets Treasure Island with Tim Curry! Another version of A Christmas Carol that is dearly amazingly underrated is the 2004 Hallmark musical version which is based on the Broadway stage adaption. 🐸🐷🐀👽👴🏻🎄

From the comments you've made, I know you've watched Scrooged but I don't think you've seen non-musical versions of the original story (which is very short, by the way, and available for free on Google). So many lines from the book have become familiar that people know them by heart.
Early Victorian England, as it began to industrialize and urbanize, was particularly brutal. Dickens knew first-hand how the poor were treated, including being locked up in the poor house for not being able to pay debts. All of his works tried to bring this facet to the public, but the Christmas Carol was by far the most effective.
My favorite of the serious renditions is the 1951 version, free to watch on RUclips: "A Christmas Carol (1951)"
During the Middle Ages, xmas celebrations were more about the feasting, drinking, and wild partying, actually celebrating the pagan winter solstice. There was then a move away from celebrating it in any other way than religious. Charles Dickens' story, written in the 1840's, totally changed this to how we celebrate xmas today, with decorations and gifts, and good cheer to all. (Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, is credited with introducing the German custom of decorating a xmas tree.)
The ghost of xmas present is depicted in the original book (which had color illustrations) as our current idea of Santa, with the fur-lined clothes. But his clothes were green, not red. I understand that Coca-cola in the early 20th century, used Santa in a whole series of ads, which finally created our modern version of Santa.

You have probably never seen it, and it's almost impossible to find outside of eBay, but there was another 90s Muppets movie that was a collage of old fairy tales and fables called Muppet Classic Theater. I used to have the VHS as a kid and never knew it was so absurdly rare to have. I have never found it on any other platform but it is absolutely worth watching if you are fortunate enough to find a copy!
