    "What?"
    "I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate."
    "What's that make us?"
    "Absolutely nothing!"
Fun Fact: During his scene, Michael Winslow did most of the sound effects. In the DVD audio commentary for the movie, Mel Brooks jokes that they saved around $1,000 by letting him do this.
Doll Balls Fact: The scene in which Dark Helmet is playing with his dolls was not in the screenplay. Writer, producer, and director Mel Brooks came up with the idea on the set one day and told this to Rick Moranis, who then improvised the entire scene.
Star Wars Cameo Fact: The Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars saga makes a cameo appearance in this movie. Take a close look at the exterior shot of the Space Diner, and it can be spotted parked there among the other space vehicles. George Lucas got a chance to read the screenplay before production began, and loved it so much that he decided to have his special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, help make this movie.

Actor Tim Russ has had a long, distinguished career, including seven year playing the Vulcan security officer Tuvok in Star Trek Voyager. He had a video post a couple of years back wherein he pointed out that he had seven years of an Emmy Award winning tv series under his belt (Voyager) but to this day he's only known for saying "We ain't found shit". The whole video was delivered in that tone that he used when Tuvok was excessively exhausted with Neelix's antics and when he was edging on violence from his meld with Lon Suder, and all while raking a rock garden. Epic. I really felt for him. Tuvok was a great character.

So Mel Brooks asked George Lucas' permission, and Lucas has a track record of having a sense of humor, he said "Sure, but my only condition is you cant sell any merchandise." His instant reply was "I had no intention of selling merchandise so we're good." But after he went away, he started thinking about all the star wars toys there were out there, and how much Lucas must get from them. So because of that, he made the Merchandising scene, poking fun of "Where the real money from the movie is made!" - Fun fact #2, the cast was looking at the merchandise, and Rick Moranis (Helmet) saw the figures of the charicters, and said, "Wouldn't it be funny if Dark helmet had these dolls and started playing with them?" And he improved that scene!

    • @stevedavis5704

I believe another condition for using the characters was he couldn’t use Luke or Han so Lonestar was made to be a space going Indiana Jones with just a little Han tossed in. Lucas liked the idea so much that his special effects people helped with the effects of the movie.

    Hi Sam,
definitley one of the best comedys ever made! Some fun facts:
    - The noise-making guy on the radar sreen is Michael Winslow, probalby best known for his character "Larvell Jones" in the "Police Academy" movies. He was a stand up comedian before and is to this day, making all this noises by himself! Have a look at one of his shows, this guy is fantastic!
    - The dialogue between Colonel Sandurz and Dark Helmet when he suprises him playing with his dolls was improvised!
    - The reason for the merchandise running gag is the fact that George Lucas helped Mel Brooks with the SFX in the movie, but didn't want any Spaceballs merchandise to be released, especially action figures. Plus Star Wars was the brand that started the whole merchandise madness, so Mel made this joke over and over in the movie.
    - You saw "Independence day"? Bill Pullman (Lone Star) is the U.S. president in that one, I was laughing out loud when I saw it the first time and recognised him!
    - The first scene in Yoghurt's place with the big statue is a hommage to "The Wizard Of Oz"
    - Noticed the Millenium Falcon in the parking lot of the space diner? 😉
May the Schwartz be with you! 😁

A lot of people actually hated this movie when it first came out and viewed it as a big step down for Brooks after his hugely popular earlier films. The big issues were that he'd replaced all of his beloved acting company with new younger stars (the only actor from his earlier films is Dom DeLuise as Pizza the Hutt), and since he was aiming his parody at the contemporary film industry rather than the stuff he'd loved in his childhood, he couldn't do the same kind of smart satire of them and mostly resorted to very broad slapstick. But as the years have gone on, it's seen a significant reappraisal, especially in comparison to his even more divisive later films Life Stinks, Men in Tights, and Dead and Loving It, and a lot more people are willing to say they like it.

2001 was also touched on with the year of the Princess' space car and the plaid effects in hyperdrive for Dave's journey. They also invoked Michigan J. Frog with the song and dance bit for the chestburster. And Wizard of Oz was evident in the 4 characters (paralleling Dorothy and the Oz men) meeting a mysterious wizard with a giant head and smoke. The Dink Dinks were doing the theme from Bridge on the River Kwai. And before that, as our heroes were trudging through the sand, the music was Lawrence of Arabia. Fun fact: Lucas allowed Brooks to parody Star Wars as long as a) He didn't do any Spaceballs merchandise (thus the whole Yogurt and his merchandising) and, b) He didn't make the "Han Solo" character look like Han Solo.
So Brooks dressed him up as Indian Jones...

The whole thing with the toys at Yogurts, the dolls, and Spaceballs product placement had something to do with Lucas allowing Brooks to spoof Star Wars, but not release any toys or such based on Spaceballs. Something about kids confusing them with the actual Star Wars toys. Plus, (a theory of mine) the Schwartz (not only did it rhyme with the Force) was also the name of a big toy store that was located in Manhattan, NY (FAO Schwarz), of which was famously featured in the movie Big with Tom Hanks. This then ties back to Yogurts and advertising.

"They've gone to plaid" was possibly a joke about 2001 - A Space Odyssey, because of the visual representation being somewhat similarly colourful. Star Trek only has "white stripes" during warp speed, so it was faster than Star Trek.

One thing to keep in mind is that this movie was made when those first three Star Wars movies were literally all the Star Wars there was, and the only point of references for all the parodies of it. But that hasn't stopped quite a few jokes from gaining new meaning from later entries in the franchise, and I very much suspect at least some of them were deliberate references back to it.
-The opening credits call the movie "Chapter Eleven," which at the time was just a spoof of Empire and Jedi being confusingly labeled episodes five and six. But as I write this, there actually are eleven Star Wars movies, and it's looking more and more likely it's going to stay that way as Lucasfilm pivots toward Disney+ shows.
-Dark Helmet now comes off as much more reminiscent of Kylo Ren than Darth Vader, being a childish schmuck who easily flies into tantrums and doesn't even have a reason for wearing his stupid helmet beyond the mistaken belief that it looks cool.
-The Spaceballs being so mired in corporate bureaucracy now feels much more like the villains of the prequels than the OT.
-Lone Starr and Barf are accused of illegal parking, just like Finn and Rose in The Last Jedi.
-Dark Helmet says his convoluted family connection to Lone Starr amounts to "absolutely nothing," just like how Rey was forced to acknowledge she didn't have any big secret connection to an OT character (at least until the next movie wimped out on that).
-The barrier with a small gate around Druidia seems straight out of the climax of Rogue One.
-The Yogurt doll, which he calls "adorable," feels a lot like Baby Yoda from The Mandalorian.
