One of the funniest Star Wars parodies ever made. The idea of a Sequel was actually a joke Mel Brooks threw in there, as there is no Spaceballs 2. An animated series based on the movie was released to a mixed reception by fans of the movie.

The singing and dancing alien at the cafe makes a lot more sense for us that grew up in the 70’s watching old WB cartoons. It’s a tribute to a character named Michigan J. Frog.
The guy with the alien bursting from his chest is John Hurt (RIP), who had the same thing happen to him in the film Alien. Which is why he said, "Oh no, not again."
IF you didn't know, the little alien breaking into song is a reference to a classic 1955 Warner Brothers cartoon "One Froggy Evening" about a frog that does the exact same song and dance routine.
The computer voice is Majel Barrett. Nurse Chapel on Star Trek and Luxana Troi on Next Generation as well as Enterprise D's computer. And Gene Roddenberry's widow.
So the man who had the Alien burst out of him is John Hurt the same one who it happened to in Alien. Also when they are approaching Yogurt with the giant statue head it is a reference to Wizard of Oz down to their being a girl, one made of metal, a furry animal and one wearing brown like the scarecrow. George Lucas let the film be made and even let Mel use the effects company of his on the condition no merchandise was made because he didn't want any confusion between Star Wars and Spaceballs thus the merchandising joke.
Valium was a commonly prescribed sedative drug in the 70s and 80s for housewives suffering from hysteria - a common slang term for a boring person was to call them "a pill", and saying someone was "sleeping with Prince Valium" was to say they were abusing prescription medication.
'We all know Prince Vallium's a pill.. ' 'What's the matter Colonel Sandurz? Chicken?!' 'We ain't found ... ' And, of course, Michael 'I lost everything.. ' Winslow on radar xD xD
A lot of people actually hated this movie when it first came out and viewed it as a big step down for Brooks after his hugely popular earlier films. The big issues were that he'd replaced all of his beloved acting company with new younger stars (the only actor from his earlier films is Dom DeLuise as Pizza the Hutt), and since he was aiming his parody at the contemporary film industry rather than the stuff he'd loved in his childhood, he couldn't do the same kind of smart satire of them and mostly resorted to very broad slapstick. But as the years have gone on, it's seen a significant reappraisal, especially in comparison to his even more divisive later films Life Stinks, Men in Tights, and Dead and Loving It, and a lot more people are willing to say they like it.
GREAT REACTION!!! Yes, you really lost it over the hair buns and all the Assholes. Lots of folks seem to not get any impact from the hair bit, but YOU did! 2001 was also touched on with the year of the Princess' space car and the plaid effects in hyperdrive for Dave's journey. They also invoked Michigan J. Frog with the song and dance bit for the chestburster. And Wizard of Oz was evident in the 4 characters (paralleling Dorothy and the Oz men) meeting a mysterious wizard with a giant head and smoke. The Dink Dinks were doing the theme from Bridge on the River Kwai. And before that, as our heroes were trudging through the sand, the music was Lawrence of Arabia. So now you have to see the original Planet of the Apes (1968). Lots of fun in this posting.
When Brooks was approached about doing a Star Wars spoof, his initial idea was literally just 90 minutes of that opening gag of the ship going by. And you know he would have pulled it off if they let him.
Sam, you got ALMOST all the spoofs. There was also a little bit of "Lawrence Of Arabia" with the music when they were walking in the desert. But hey, that;s okay, in general you got 'em all. You will appreciate the "Planet Of The Apes" parody more when you do watch that movie, but you figured it out on your own. Pretty good. Definitely one of the best parody/spoof/satire movies ever made. Good ol' Mel Brooks, he sure can make you, and me, laugh. May The Schwartz Be With You!
Also, the scene when they enter Yogurt's lair was a spoof take on the scene in the Wizard of Oz when Scarecrow(Lone Star), Dorothy (Vespa), Barf (The Lion), and Dot (the Tin Man) first encounter the "Wizard". But in this case, it is Dot who tries to wimp out instead of the Lion (Barf).
@@Tarlkov Found another reference. When Dick Van Paten is walking Daphne down the aisle and says "He didn't take the reward, just $36.00 for tolls and gas, etc", he is parodying a scene in "It Happened One Night" from the wedding scene at the end where the father tells the daughter (Claudette Colbert) as they are walking down the aisle, almost word for word what Mr. Van Paten did, or really vice versa. Check it out.
the wizard of oz, you got it, when they are speaking to yoghurt in the statue, you have the princess as Dorothy, Dot s the Tin Woodman, Barf as the cowardly Lion and Lone star as the scarecrow
HOLY SHIT.. I've watched a trillion times since I was a kid and I've never noticed they just slapped a "Spaceballs" on a Transformers book! You have amazing eyes..!
Lone Star was played by Bill Pullman, who also played the US President in "Independence Day". Also, Stephen Tobolowsky played the officer who caught the stunt doubles; he also played the insurance salesman in "Groundhog Day". I've been watching this film repeatedly since it first came out, and it was only last week that I got one of the very first gags: CHAPTER 11. The film states in the introductory text floating back into the cosmos that this story was "Chapter 11". "Chapter 11" in common usage means 'bankruptcy'.
Hilarious reaction! Fun fact: Mel Brooks got the rights to 'Spaceballs' on the condition they do no merchandising, so instead, they put merchandising in the movie itself!
The Charlene and Marlene characters are from the Doublemint commercials from the 80s. Lucas let Brooks make this movie as long as there was no merchandise made so there was no confusion between the two movies. He also said that he couldn’t model Lone Star after Han Solo so instead Brooks did Indiana Jones. The actor at the radar station that’s making all the noises is Michael Winslow who did the Police Academy movies. Before Barf and Lone Star go to the diner if you look closely to the right side of the “parking lot” you’ll see the Millennium Falcon parked there.
19:13 Yeah, they took an official Transformers product and slapped the Spaceballs logo on it. The lunchbox in the same scene has the 1986 product mural on it.
When I saw this in the theater, there was a tight close-up of the plastic surgeon's nurse zipping up the front of her uniform once the lights came back on.
21:47 Which Mel Brooks later said he wasn't sure he would do butt did confirm that he'd be interested in making 'Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2'
The “jawas” song is actually from a war movie made in the fifties, bridge on the river kwai. Alec Guinness, who played Obi-Wan in the first three star wars movies starred in it.
Fun fact: Lucas allowed Brooks to parody Star Wars as long as a) He didn't do any Spaceballs merchandise (thus the whole Yogurt and his merchandising) and, b) He didn't make the "Han Solo" character look like Han Solo. So Brooks dressed him up as Indian Jones...
Rocky 5 ... thousand; Mc, KFC, Pizza Hut; Police Academy, the super long ship ref seems to be Battle Star Gallactica (70s series), arcade game style nav system when flying through the ear ... there are so many clever-stupid puns that are frequently missed, absolutely amazing
7:11 I and my friend were. We each took a hit of acid and went to the mall arcade and played video games for a while. Soon afterwards, we went to the theater in the mall, and watched Spaceballs. It made Spaceballs like 2-3 times funnier for us.
This is my favorite spoof movie! 😁😁 I paused your video and JUST noticed that Princess Vespa's Mercedes(the ship/car) says "Spoil'd Rott'n I" on the license plate!😂😂😂😂
Had a blast watching you lose your mind laughing. It's great seeing people discover Mel Brooks, and even better when they actually get the gags, no matter how stupid or silly ("Radar about to be jammed!")
One of the other movies they spoofed was the Live-Action Movie of HE-MAN in the scene where Dark Helmet got the Princess away from Yogurt's cave. There was a scene in the movie where Evil-Lyn used something similar to do the same to one of the Good guys.
not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but the Jawas was Snow White, and the Scene with the giant Yogurt head was Wizard of Oz.. Loved the reactions. Itis one of my all time favorites. If you haven't already you should do Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein. Both are classic Mel Brooks. Keep up the fun videos.
The whole thing with the toys at Yogurts, the dolls, and Spaceballs product placement had something to do with Lucas allowing Brooks to spoof Star Wars, but not release any toys or such based on Spaceballs. Something about kids confusing them with the actual Star Wars toys. Plus, (a theory of mine) the Schwartz (not only did it rhyme with the Force) was also the name of a big toy store that was located in Manhattan, NY (FAO Schwarz), of which was famously featured in the movie Big with Tom Hanks. This then ties back to Yogurts and advertising.
"They've gone to plaid" was possibly a joke about 2001 - A Space Odyssey, because of the visual representation being somewhat similarly colourful. Star Trek only has "white stripes" during warp speed, so it was faster than Star Trek.
One thing to keep in mind is that this movie was made when those first three Star Wars movies were literally all the Star Wars there was, and the only point of references for all the parodies of it. But that hasn't stopped quite a few jokes from gaining new meaning from later entries in the franchise, and I very much suspect at least some of them were deliberate references back to it. -The opening credits call the movie "Chapter Eleven," which at the time was just a spoof of Empire and Jedi being confusingly labeled episodes five and six. But as I write this, there actually are eleven Star Wars movies, and it's looking more and more likely it's going to stay that way as Lucasfilm pivots toward Disney+ shows. -Dark Helmet now comes off as much more reminiscent of Kylo Ren than Darth Vader, being a childish schmuck who easily flies into tantrums and doesn't even have a reason for wearing his stupid helmet beyond the mistaken belief that it looks cool. -The Spaceballs being so mired in corporate bureaucracy now feels much more like the villains of the prequels than the OT. -Lone Starr and Barf are accused of illegal parking, just like Finn and Rose in The Last Jedi. -Dark Helmet says his convoluted family connection to Lone Starr amounts to "absolutely nothing," just like how Rey was forced to acknowledge she didn't have any big secret connection to an OT character (at least until the next movie wimped out on that). -The barrier with a small gate around Druidia seems straight out of the climax of Rogue One. -The Yogurt doll, which he calls "adorable," feels a lot like Baby Yoda from The Mandalorian.
Ooooooh, this entire time I thought the "Chapter Eleven" reference was the movie making fun of itself by calling itself bankrupt. lol Thanks for the cool facts!
@@normanreviewsgames698 Ryan's reasoning gives Credence to why it would be anything other than chapter 1. But I think your reason is exactly why they chose 11😉
Lucas gave Brooks all the rights and offered his production to help with the movie, however he could not have any merchandise to go with the film which is why all the Space balls parody’s to products.
Lol, classic movie. Laughed so much when you were laughing when she took off her hair headphones. Another great movie review. Take care and can't wait for the next one.😊😊
The sound effects radar officer (real name Winslow, sorry I can't remember his first name) stared in all the "Police Academy" movies, worth a watch! This is a hysterical movie. Great reaction.
The radar guy is Michael Winslow, guy skilled at random sounds. He played in Police Academy movies and it's where many know him from even if they haven't watched them. All due to how he's known for the sounds at parts in Police Academy.
One thing about the opening crawl. In the novelization of this (yes it does exist), the crawl was on the opening page and the font shrinks every line. The "If you can read this you don't need glasses" line is in 2 point font.
Would LOVE to see your reaction to...'The Producers'....the original version that came out in the 1960s. I think it was Mel's first film & starred Gene Wilder, Zero Mostel & Dick Shawn. In the 2000s Mel redid it as a musical....that starred Matthew Broderick & Nathan Lane. You DON'T want THAT version. You want the ORIGINAL.
I Fourthed That! .... I'm 71 and saw in the Theatre on release. When that guy started singing "It's Springtime for Hitler" I had a Asthma Attack .... And I didn't even have Asthma!
Okay I went to look... You did react to the 1st Alien movie. That last scene was a spoof of the baby alien reveal. The actor in Space Balls was the same guy from Alien. That's why he said "oh no not again" The baby alien did a Looney Toons cartoon spoof (not sure which) of a frog doing that "hello my baby" song and dance routine. Us old fogies got a kick out of it way back when.
Great reaction to the comedic genius of Mel Brooks. I think the Wizard Of Oz spoof was actually a Star Wars spoof of the Jawas finding R2D2 and C3PO in the desert and bringing them onto the giant sand crawler. Also, when Lone Star and Barf are walking into the Space Diner, you can see the Millennium Falcon parked there.
It was an homage to Wizard of Oz. If you look at our heros, they are The Scarecrow (Lonestar) The TinMan (Dot) Dorothy (Princess Vespa) and the Cowardly Lion (Barth). OZ/The Wizard is represented by the statue then Yogurt. The Dink Dinks are a mix of Munchkins and Jawas.
"What a mess!" - I agree! It's not Mel Brooks' best, it's jokes are hit and miss, but the hits are GREAT! (to me the "Virgin Alarm" is one of the best jokes ever!) All in all, a lot of weird fun with some potential wasted.
One of the lesser caught jokes, When Mega maid is ready to begin her metamorphosis, Dark Helmet goes "Ready, Kafka?". The Metamorphosis is a book written by author Franz Kafka. It's the story of a man who wakes up one morning and discovers that he's turned into a giant cockroach, and he needs to learn to live with his new existence.
I feel like this movie can be perfect summed up by my friend's response to many of the jokes, which was to laugh heartily, and then, still smiling, mumble "... stupid."

The bit with the action figures was totally improvised by Rick Moranis. Mel Brooks gave him the dolls and let him go.

Valium was a commonly prescribed sedative drug in the 70s and 80s for housewives suffering from hysteria - a common slang term for a boring person was to call them "a pill", and saying someone was "sleeping with Prince Valium" was to say they were abusing prescription medication.
Ahhh okay, my bad, I thought it was a sleeping-related pill whoops. But either way 😂
..At least it wasn't his cousin, Count Quaalude.
Also, there was a Prince Valiant in the comics, and his clothing and hair matched that esthetic.
@@DNulrammah a k a Cliff Huxtable.
I laughed my @$$ off at you double facepalming at the Pizza the Hutt scene. That's one of my favorite scenes to see people's reaction to.
'We all know Prince Vallium's a pill.. '
'What's the matter Colonel Sandurz? Chicken?!'
'We ain't found ... '
And, of course, Michael 'I lost everything.. ' Winslow on radar xD
xD
It's a spoof of sci-fi in general not just SW, enjoyed your reaction.
Now you know where Tesla got Type S Plaid with LUDICROUS speed lol. A FAN
All the merch jokes are because Lucas gave Mel the full green ight with one limitation, no merch.
When Brooks was approached about doing a Star Wars spoof, his initial idea was literally just 90 minutes of that opening gag of the ship going by. And you know he would have pulled it off if they let him.
It's really clever how in the end, the final fight was literally a phallus waving contest lol
The literal radar jamming is still one of the best moments ever.
I've been watching this film repeatedly since it first came out, and it was only last week that I got one of the very first gags:
CHAPTER 11.
They wouldn't let Lonestar dress like Han Solo, so they dressed him like Indiana Jones.
😂
When she takes her headphones off, your laugh is the best😂😂
When I saw this in the theater, there was a tight close-up of the plastic surgeon's nurse zipping up the front of her uniform once the lights came back on.
Of course 😂
21:47 Which Mel Brooks later said he wasn't sure he would do butt did confirm that he'd be interested in making 'Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2'
5:03 "Berries and cream guy" 🤣 I always thought that, and no one said it until you did LOL.
Yes, that was Optimus Prime. That was also a Transformers lunch box with "SPACEBALLS" pasted across the top.
The Out of Order scene will forever be my favorite F bomb ever dropped in a movie lol
The “jawas” song is actually from a war movie made in the fifties, bridge on the river kwai.
Alec Guinness, who played Obi-Wan in the first three star wars movies starred in it.
I thought you were gonna choke at the headphones joke 😂
So funny 😂
This is one of those "gotta stop everything I'm doing to watch this" kinda reactions
😂😂😂 Hope you enjoyed!
@@OGBReacts I surely did! ..... Now You type : "Thanks, But Don't Call Me Shirley!"
Seeing you absolutely cracking up non-stop on this reaction was the highlight of my day! Great job!
I just realized Lonestar saying how did they get to Disneyland when he saw some "Jawas". What a prediction!
Rocky 5 ... thousand; Mc, KFC, Pizza Hut; Police Academy, the super long ship ref seems to be Battle Star Gallactica (70s series), arcade game style nav system when flying through the ear ... there are so many clever-stupid puns that are frequently missed, absolutely amazing
7:11
I and my friend were.
Dark Helmet playing with his dolls again was all IMPROVISED.
Sound effects guy is Michael Winslow. Great stand up and was in the Police Academy movies.
He does an amazing and hilarious Led Zeppelin bit.
He also had a scene in the first Cheech & Chong movie.
The guy doing the sound effects was well known for that ability. He was also in the Police Academy movies.
The shots where the escape pods eject is actually unused footage from the original Star Wars movie... another gift from Mr Lucas!
Had a blast watching you lose your mind laughing. It's great seeing people discover Mel Brooks, and even better when they actually get the gags, no matter how stupid or silly ("Radar about to be jammed!")
OGB Reacts You are one of the most personable youtubers I know of, I am proud to be one of your subscribers.
You are too kind!! Thank you so much ♥️
@@OGBReacts You're more than welcome Sam, we love you💙
One of the other movies they spoofed was the Live-Action Movie of HE-MAN in the scene where Dark Helmet got the Princess away from Yogurt's cave. There was a scene in the movie where Evil-Lyn used something similar to do the same to one of the Good guys.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love how much and how hard you laughed 🤣🤣🤣
not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but the Jawas was Snow White, and the Scene with the giant Yogurt head was Wizard of Oz..
Those hair headphones gotcha...I think that's the hardest I've seen u laugh 😂
Something about it just absolutely killed me 😂
Also the black guy with the pick in the desert is same actor who played Tuvok on Str Trk Voyager. He's still proud of it today
See, I didn't know that actually or I would've included it! Whoops.
The sound effects guy is Michael Winslow. You may recognize him from the Police Academy movies. He can do that in real life
"They've gone to plaid" was possibly a joke about 2001 - A Space Odyssey, because of the visual representation being somewhat similarly colourful.
@normanreviewsgames698 Pretty sure that IS the reason for the Chapter Eleven gag.
@@normanreviewsgames698 Ryan's reasoning gives Credence to why it would be anything other than chapter 1. But I think your reason is exactly why they chose 11😉
The Rogue One thing was actually a nod to Spaceballs.
Brilliant! Mad Magazine had a Star Wars sequel prediction feature back in 1982 which got so many things right you’d think they have Jedi mind powers!
Lucas gave Brooks all the rights and offered his production to help with the movie, however he could not have any merchandise to go with the film which is why all the Space balls parody’s to products.
Watching her brain break at various point was hilarious.
I've actually reacted to both!

I didn't recognize him when I saw him, but considering he said that, I was like "Yup definitely him"😂
I love this movie. Every scene is just pure comedy gold.
Rick Moranis stole the show in this hands down, such a classic I've been watching this movie for over 30 years and still laugh just as hard
I remember seeing this movie for the first time as a kid with my dad. One of my fondest memories. Enjoyed watching your reaction to it. ❤
This has always been my favorite Mel Brooks movie and I'm so glad you laughed at this so hard. Ridiculous in the best way.
Your reactions to all the jokes are brilliant. You really enjoy it spontaneously and you catch almost every reference.
For all those star TREK fans, the Spaceball who exclaims “Ain’t found s*!t” with the pick on the desert is TUVOK Tim Russ himself.
The dancing Chestburster is a rip-off of the Loonie tunes cartoon "One Froggy Evening". The cartoon is a worthwhile watch in itself.
(to me the "Virgin Alarm" is one of the best jokes ever!)
All in all, a lot of weird fun with some potential wasted.
Hi Sam :)
In all the time I've watched your stuff, I've never seen you laughing so hard. I'm glad you had so much fun :)
I feel like this movie can be perfect summed up by my friend's response to many of the jokes, which was to laugh heartily, and then, still smiling, mumble "... stupid."
😂 Literally my same reaction too!
