Kirby, I so agree with you! Both Jim and Brenda are so lucky and blessed to still have good health, physically a mentally. To get out of bed so early in the mornings and get to work. No doubt they enjoy being able to do the work as much as doing it. There's a country song that says " You're going to miss this, you're going to want this back". So grateful for good health, long may we all have it!

Baron became a major contributor to farming success in a short time. His lack of faults is amazing. Jim, you trained him well. The sound of the plow on the upper end of the field echoes against the rocks underneath. The cows followed a long way with no reward, nicely done Brenda.

Cows sound hungry. Ours never liked the grass after we started getting frost, and then they would start getting out looking for something that tasted better. They smell those apples, but they don't want to walk so far for them. All three of those colts are so good, I would be sorely tempted to get a couple of Suffolk mares and start breeding a few, if I had a colt as good as Baron. It looks like Baron actually likes being in the furrow and having a clear line to follow.

"sheep in the meadow and cows in the corn..." a farmers best asset is a pail and pail-trained stock. Easier than chasing cows in a 40 acre field or down the road.
Like plowing with a walking plow...gets your steps in, or skidding logs with a loose evener, no shortage of walking lol. Nice to see them going along so nicely.

This is why i love this channel. No two days are ever the same and the weather plays such a big part of the work that needs to get done rocks to remove from tiling plowing too be done Cows to round up and there is the woods getting fire wood and feeding the animals and cutting hay there are so many jobs to be done. Then Logging and milling corn cutting hay bales to be done horses to take care of and barn cats. I currently do not have any big animals in my barn but a couple of chubby barn cats. They were working animals from the SPCA. It is always a few degrees warmer in the barn even with no big animals in there yet. plans are in the works for that. Bree is growing up nicely with her uncles. which one does she favour the most do you think I think its Duke. Great round up Brenda that was so much fun to watch the way the cows get excited when you call them in. I have never seen cows so excited like that. they are really so playful walking behind you. so cool to watch well done Brenda!. I can't wait to get my Calendar in the mail. Seeing the horses and the way they work together and the respect those horses have for you both and for whom ever is driving or riding them is truly magical to watch. One of my goals in life is to ride on one of those big horses, not necessarily yours i mean a big horse. in general. A draft breed, it must be like riding on a luxury car. Draft horses believe it or not make great jumping horses too. but if you teach them to jump they will. So best make those fences higher so they cannot jump them. Jumping is not for all horses just like not all people like the same things some don't like it and will refuse to do it, Horses of all shapes and sizes can be very picky. Jim Brenda Abby, Trudy and your Son and his wife and family I would like to wish you a heart felt happy Thanksgiving! May your harvest be plenty and your hearts full of love and togetherness. May God bless you all and keep you all very safe and close. Also to your Amish friends and your helper who is a clever person master craftsmen. He seems to like working in the mill. I would like to wish him and his family too and your Amish friends and neighbours a Heartfelt Happy thanksgiving also. Forgive me but i have forgotten his name. My mind isn't what it used to be, i have a terrible time with Names. Getting older isn't as much fun as it sounds sometimes.

Back in the Summer of 1954 I was a year and a half old. I don’t remember the horse, but my Dad and older Brothers shared the stories about Duke. My Brother Johnny said that Duke showed him how to pull a log out of the woods and into the field. I just have to share this story. It was upstate NY Delaware County, in the town of Hancock, NY. My Brother Johnny hooked Duke up to a good size log (Hemlock) and said getup Duke, Duke took a step back and lunged forward and started pulling this lot out to the field. The log Duke was pulling hit a stump and stopped Duke. Before Johnny could do or say anything, Duke made a 90° left turn, pulling the log to the left. Took a step back again and pulled that log out to the field. Johnny said he was dumb founded! He couldn’t believe what just happened. Johnny was 16 years old years old at the time. Now Johnny is 86 years old and still talks about Duke!

I know we all have our own way of getting jobs done which leads to a question/comment here. Many farms take a mower and cut down all the stalks to help with making the corn stalks more compostable and for easier plowing. Jim, it seems you are working as hard as the horses with those unruly stalks but I figured you must have a reason for ground fitting the way you do. I was thinking maybe that might make the whole job a little easier. Just my 2¢

Cows ( and horses) are herd animals . Brenda has discovered that get the bossy cow to follow you ( a treat) and all others will follow as well . Not dangerous in my opinion if you do a little handling and the animals get to know you and who is bringing treats .

Non-farmers just don’t know how hard it is to manage animals. Just trusting energetic young bulls could have charged petite Brenda at any second. They don’t know what strength they have.
One great thing is routine for stock. Predictable paths, kindness, so that animals know how to return handlings. Just like a garden, water it and it grows.

Have you thought about running a disc over the stalks before plowing. The disc may leave smaller residue and prevent the plow from plugging. I have done that in the past and seemed to help. Enjoy the videos...

Those three seem to be working so well together now. Baron doesn't look to be tossing his head as much as he did before. On your plow I see you have smooth edge coulters. As wet as it is they don't cut stalks very well. You might try serrated edge coulter. they may cut stalks in the wet ground better.

There's no end to the work...which I miss, as I sit watching this video. Glad the cows followed you so well, Brenda...you just never know what "wild hair" they're going to have tickle them. That was a lot of uneven, hard walking, Jim, and talking as you go! So thankful you selflessly share your life, even when it's not easy, so others can enjoy! 💜😊

Jim, when I grew up on the farm everyone I knew mowed their fields and chopped up the corn and weeds then plowed it under. Would that not work for you? And make things easier?

Each farm process has a different sound, like mower, tedder, spreader, plough, etc. Have you ever made a montage of the sounds?

In Missouri, we shred our stalks before we work the ground. Something you might consider next time.

I know you're pressed for time, but you could try letting things dry up. Especially with water laying the field.

If you're in up state New York, you go due west into Ontario where I live there isn't much difference. Except we have more sand than clay the is plentiful along the lake. But I have worked clay and was always told to not to tip it up shine nee. I really don’t why that was the rule but letting it dry it will plough a lot easier.

Chuck I'm in eastern Ontario .worked that blue clay soil .This is the middle of November .The ground will be frozen probably in next 2 weeks .Got get that fall plowing done now .Shinny soil should grow , crops next summer . In my opinion that's the important result of Plowing. 😊
