Jim I have had huge success with victor fly bates. Tractor supply sells them in a plastic container then there are small packages of powder that you dump in the plastic container and a line that fill in with water. The green head horse flys it gets them like crazy. I have 3 i hang all around my farm and significantly reduced the fly load. right now I'm dumping out 3 lbs of dead flys every couple of days its incredible. For the powder refills amazon has 30 packs for cheaper than tractor supply. I have not been able to find bulk powder yet. As always I love your channel thanks for the weekly inspiration God bless. I watch everyone else's horse and mule logging and farming videos I can find on RUclips. And will say I want to build an evener setup and cart like you have the forecarts the other guys have are too high in my opinion not to mention they can't hook up wagons and carts all in one like your setup. I cant believe how good duke and earl have progressed so impressive. Someday ill have some horses on my RUclips channel and I'll be dedicating them to you Jim.
This is perhaps one of your best training videos! Getting inside the head of the young horse is a fine art. Loved the view from in the log! Thanks so much, Brenda.
Slow and easy, building his confidence and he'll think that there's nothing that he can't move. Very interesting shot from inside that hollow log. Thanks for taking us along for a ride.
Ingenious idea to put camera in hollow log. It gave a truly different perceptive of view from the wagon. Looking out from the log we were allowed to see the log from inside, as we had a picture perfect view of the outside. Great photography! Great idea!
Earl did a very good job working alongside Bill! Thanks to all your good training and nurturing Earl and Duke, they will become valuable teammates with the other drafts! Hoping you and Brenda have a good trip to PA, and hope all the horses, fillies, and cattle do well while you're gone! Have a great 4th of July!🇺🇸
What an absolutely wonderful horse training video. I have asked over the last couple years for you make sure to explain how you train your new young horses. This video was a masterpiece. I could watch and listen to you all day explain why you do various things to train Earl and then have the pleasure of watching you do it. I watched this video and turned around and watched it again.
Yes great video and very good hearing you talk about getting in the horses head Too bad more people didn't do that Also putting a colt with a seasoned horse such as Bill or Ken is so great as well God bless and safe trip to Pennsylvania ❤
Jim, you have such patience in teaching your horses. You obviously have the ability to think like a horse and you certainly know how their brains work. It truly is a pleasure watching you and Brenda and your teams sharing life together .
Its all about having an experienced horse beside a youngster, and every horse getting some sort of a workout most days, and most of the work getting done without the use of machinery. Jim's days are very full but well balanced. His relaxation is driving the horses, Jim's joy. The horses' relaxation is when they wait while he works.
@@louisecassidy5991 You are right- I myself have worked horses for 61 years and still enjoy it, although my scope now is limited due to old age and its consequences.
Jim and Brenda, I got a huge kick out of you filming you driving the logging wagon through the hollow log. It looked terrific. Your tutorial on starting Earl out on skidding lighter basswood logs. was wonderful . . Jim your so correct in your statement that you have to introduce the mental side of pulling and starting the load . Also to trust the teamster meaning you that you'll never overload the young or older horse. The horse flies are a pain in the derriere . . Making your plan in approaching the location of the logs so when your skidding with a young horse like Earl so the log doesn't bind up . Full marks go the Jim and Bill teaching Earl the art of skidding logs.
Jim, I did some reading today and I learned that feeding horses garlic has been shown in studies to reduce horse fly bites by up to 54%. Look into - maybe it's something that you could try.
Well that Earl is doing a good job. Jim I know logging is your thing but watching the horses doing chores around the farm really is just interesting to your viewers. Amazing work everyone.
My time in USAF stationed Plattsburgh as a very young man we used to spend our off duty time fishing and exploring. I had to learn to tolerate the blackflies then horseflies.
🤔Admire your horsemanship/ managerial skill 😊 impressive training baron earl etc logging/farming, Brenda seems like a lot of foot/leg work on your videos 🤭👏 hollow log camera shots 👍
Jim awesome idea putting the camera in the log, that was so cool. Again you and Brenda will have some great pictures for your upcoming calendar❣️ Enjoyed todays video you were definitely in your element today Jim - in spite of the 🪰's.
Seems like Earl has come along faster/ further in training at this point than Duke - or, at least, gets used more (though maybe I’m wrong, just going off videos) - while Duke seems to have become quite bonded with Bree - perhaps future teams are potentially Baron/Earl and Duke/Bree…? In the comments, I note that many see a future Bree/June pairing, but sometimes two mares, even sisters, might not get along… will be fascinating to watch how the herd dynamics evolve and how that translates to which working pairings work best - time will tell, but still fun to speculate! Thank you for another excellent video - I really like hearing Jim talk about training! And, yes, the Log Cam was great!
I love how you take the training slow to give the young horse time to observe the experienced horse and wrap his head around what he:d neing asked to do. As granddad would say, give 'em time to chew on it.
It was a thing to cut mint to hang on a rope or braid it into 1. Mint and other plants have a built in fly repellant that used to be hung in doorways of houses as well as barns.
Watch out Spielberg, Jim the Horseman snapping at your heels 😂😂 How are your plants at the pond doing Brenda ...I know you haven't had weather conducive to big blooms 😢
Loved the hollow log frame! That was neat. A request: even though I've been watching for more than a year, it would help if you would identify each horse as you start a task. Can't keep track of them all the time, except for black Ken. Thanks!
So very sad to hear about the horse/deer flies! Your woods are so beautiful in all seasons. I truly enjoy watching both of you tend the fields and garden; however, those woods are something else!
I see Skippy is still leading the way in the woods. Jim I am glad that you take the time to teach Earl the way to work. Thanks again for for all of your hard work to share these videos with us Brenda and Jim. God bless and keep safe
I never knew yall look for oats that are at the milk stage. 😂 loved the hollow log, pulled by horses, view point 😂 getting into Earls head is quiet an art, for which you hold the corner on, i think. 😂 Bill was a super help, huh! But as their teamster im glad you explained abt the eveners again, i ll learn eventually.😅 i didnt know the horse flies can drive the horses mad, or that theyre gonna want to go 😅 Great filming job. Thanks Brenda. ❤ Thanx Jim ❤ God bless your days nd eves too. Good day! 😊
Hey Jim, I confess I haven't watched in a while, but you should consider coming to the Eastern States Expedition horse pulls in western Massachusetts. I am confident you won't be disappointed.
Horseflies land with their teeth bared, biting as soon as they land. The horses need long tails to chase as many as they can away from their body.. Need to keep the shears away from their tails when horsefly season approaches. 😅
Jim for fly spray I highly recommend Tri-tec14. I know you can get that stuff in the states but it’s pricey (i’m in the UK). If you can get Deosect out there it’s the same active ingredient but comes in a concentrated bottle that does 25 500ml bottles.
Oh my goodness!! I'm inside a log!!! 😂 It's a beautiful view!! That was fun! No, I've never done this before!!! 😊 So interesting to listen to you, Jim. Good videoography, Brenda! You keep up so smoothly!! I really enjoyed this video! 💕
Hi Jim....it Was a fun ride inside the big log and I didn't even get motion sick! It is a beautiful day! Hi Brenda....you're so quiet I didn't realize you were there. Hope you have fun getting away for a week, with William, Trudy & Abby holding down the Farm. Will anyone work with little June or is she totally Jim's pet project for now? Anyway, have fun and God bless.....😊❤😊
Jim, you are so good with your horses. I love watching them with you. It is amazing what they will do for you. I wonder though, have you ever had a horse that just would not or could not adjust to skidding logs or pulling? I cannot imagine a horse of yours failing because of how you train them.
Jim, do you have any problem with deer flies there in upper New York? Here in Illinois, those were the main ones to watch out for. And they will bite humans as well as horses.
The videography, different. In a good way, never done that before. My understanding is you don’t want to hook him up to anything that you know he can’t pull, so in his head he can pull anything. In turn he will trust you when you ask of him.
Very cool filming from the inside of a hollow log .. Brenda and do a very fine job with your videos Jim ,always interesting and a lot of good information
The camera in the log would be a good calendar page
The camera in the log was priceless good thinking Jim
Thanks for the log ride, now I know what a racoon, squirrel, chipmunk, etc feels like riding in a log! 😅😅😂

😮
A whole new perspective Jim, seeing the world from in inside of the hollowed out tree? A very novel but interesting perspective.
Brenda , I bet your flowers are pretty that you planted out by the pond and cabin.
Jim Brenda don’t stop horse pulling. I enjoyed horses and horse pulling in the 40s with my grand father!!
Brenda gets the greatest shots. Looking forward to seeing you at the horse progress days
I'm looking forward to Horse Progress Days on "Working Horses With Jim
The ride in the log was like viewing the scene through a moon gate. Fun!
Brenda, they love when they get tied to a tree with leaves
Loved the unexpected view from a hollow log! Nope, never done before!
Jim as an artist I absolutely loved the ride in the hole of a log..that is definitely a pic for your calandar. lov from south alabama.
Absolutely, a great and rare picture for the 2025 Calender
Love the creative camera work!
Such pretty regal boys
By golly! Earl is well up in his collar and a little ahead of Bill, right at the start of the vid.
Love the hollow log shot! Definitely calendar worthy!

Absolutely !!!

I watched this video and turned around and watched it again.
Jim, you finally topped Brenda in creative camera shots with the log shot. Ironicly, the shot before that was looking at Baron’s junk, nice save.
Hollow logs are also a good home for foxes and other fluffy creatures !
Yes great video and very good hearing you talk about getting in the horses head
Too bad more people didn't do that
Also putting a colt with a seasoned horse such as Bill or Ken is so great as well
God bless and safe trip to Pennsylvania ❤
View from inside the log was great. Looks nasty in there and the bugs must have had a field day.
Nice views, Jim!!
Horses legst and through the wood...I enjoy all of your videos
Many greetings from Germany
Jim, you have such patience in teaching your horses. You obviously have the ability to think like a horse and you certainly know how their brains work. It truly is a pleasure watching you and Brenda and your teams sharing life together .
It must be very rewarding to have all this different team combinations available - and every one of them is good.
Great Teams of potential horses with a group of top flight and trained draft horses

Great video! Go Earl and Bill! So glad you have Ken and Bill to show the young’uns how it’s done.
Lady is very good team member in addition to being good mother.
Jim, is June going to be last breeding for Lady?
Loved the log shot!! Baron had to grow up fast because of unfortunate circumstances! He did well!
Perfect place for the camera
Great video Earl is a natural, be well and be safe,
Left me feeling a bit "hollow" lol. Great video as usual!😂❤❤
That was my first time riding in a log pretty cool thanks Jim
Jim, I did some reading today and I learned that feeding horses garlic has been shown in studies to reduce horse fly bites by up to 54%. Look into - maybe it's something that you could try.
I wouldn't feed my horses colic because I would be worried about causing colic
Garlic 😊
Jim’s video creativity with the camera inside the hollow log is award winning. Really enjoyable.
Well that Earl is doing a good job. Jim I know logging is your thing but watching the horses doing chores around the farm really is just interesting to your viewers. Amazing work everyone.
Thank you Jim And Brenda. Well done.❤❤❤❤❤.

It's Amazing to see how far he has come ! Great job with him!

Oh by the way your woods there are truly beautiful.
Really enjoyed this video, Jim. Lots of good technical information. Great job on the camera, Brenda! Love all the videos ❤
Love the hollow log 👀 view ‼️
The log shot is the best!!
Some very interesting video perspectives today. Nice job!
What patience you have training your horses! I loved watching each part of this, and look forward to seeing some of you in PA next week! 😊💜
It was a thing to cut mint to hang on a rope or braid it into 1. Mint and other plants have a built in fly repellant that used to be hung in doorways of houses as well as barns.
Light colors attract those lousy flies.
So awesome that y'all
can do things still like the good old days. Do you ever run low on
trees to cut ?
Watch out Spielberg, Jim the Horseman snapping at your heels 😂😂
How are your plants at the pond doing Brenda ...I know you haven't had weather conducive to big blooms 😢

Baron seems to really like his jobs. Earl is following in his brothers footsteps. Great training methods works wonders..
Well,,,,, that was different, never rode inside a hollow log before, but I guess I have now. Made me feel a little squirrelly. LOL.
That was an awesome idea Jim. Ty

That suffock team is going to be a great team
Gorgeous horses 🐎 in
Good video Jim. I've been waiting to see Earl in the woods, I do hope he turns out to be a good pulling horse.
Have you given a thought to planting some trees and if so, what would they be.! Thank you Jim and Brenda..!
Jim I love the effects of Putin your camera in the log it is pictureess
Enjoyed the ride inside the hollow log.
I ENJOYED MY LOG'S EYE VIEW OF THE WAGON RIDE
Love the novel camera positions!
dried basswood makes great kindling wood
The log view was great! Glad you thought of that!
Earl working like a good un.
For a young 4 year old Earl did well, with the support of Bill and with Jim on the lines
Earl and bill seam well matched
Log cam was fun!

I really enjoyed this video! 💕
great photography in the log, thanks,
When you leave for 5 Saudi’s, who is around or stays at your farm to keep eye on your beautiful working horses?
Loved the hollow log ride!! Very nice 👍
The harness looks gorgeous! I love the yellow and red combo.
Hi Jim....it Was a fun ride inside the big log and I didn't even get motion sick! It is a beautiful day! Hi Brenda....you're so quiet I didn't realize you were there. I liked the hollow log view and it was framed nicely by the wood surround :) Love the videos!

You had some lightweight logs in that load ! 😁
pretty clever puttin' the camera in that hallow log!!!!
The videography, different. In a good way, never done that before. My understanding is you don’t want to hook him up to anything that you know he can’t pull, so in his head he can pull anything. In turn he will trust you when you ask of him.
Great ride 🎉
Love the ride in the log. really fun. The hollow logs can be used for a lot of things
Very cool filming from the inside of a hollow log .. Brenda and do a very fine job with your videos Jim ,always interesting and a lot of good information
All the horses seem to be doing great. Will Duke be working in the woods pulling logs as well?
