  • At $76 this was the cheapest full frame camera I could find. It was announced way back in 2005 but still packs quite the punch. Here are five reasons why I think its a great buy even today.

Also, I have cropped just about every image. And given that its a 12mp sensor.. skip the peeping :)

Is a Canon 5D’s decent enough for today’s day and age? I have a 60D that shows a lot of age in that aspect, starting from ISO 2000 grain is a bit too noticeable. And newer APS-C cameras have way better ISO control than my 60D I can’t imagine this 5D being close enough to performance of newer Aps-c to justify the purchase.

Sold my 5D (owned for ten years) a few months ago for $200 (with handgrip, L-plate, and extra batteries). Buyers were knocking down the imaginery door to get it. I guess I sold too cheap. The autofocus points don't work so well anymore except for the centre one. The mirror had to be fixed twice, and the grip creaks slightly from use. But, the camera does its job and I have so many pictures to show for it. I hope the person who bought the 5D appreciates it as much as you do

I have used the Canon 5D classic Mk1 for the past 15 years, I bought the first one when they first released the body and used it for about 150 weddings, I also bought a back up body. I ended up managing over 300 weddings with the 5d classic, they just keep going. They do have a problem where the mirror can fall off , but if you are careful and buy a serial starting with a 3...... you will be safe. they also improved the rear screen and low pass filter with the cameras stating 3....... I am still using it in 2020 (not for weddings this year because of lockdown)😰
Thank you for making this great video, I love watching your videos keep making more.

My Top Reasons to buy a 5D Classic (1). High pixel pitch (8.2 µm) for best life-like organic images and depth rendition. Today's cameras are sooo sharp, cold, and very digital. This and the Canon 1DS mark 1 are the closest you will get to life-like organic images that resemble film. (2.) 12 MegaPixel, So you can still make large prints, even for professional work. (3.) FullFrame ofcourse! Just my opinion, this is a great camera!

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your video.
I have been playing around with a D3200 for about a year and was thinking about trying full frame. Keep in mind, I'm no "photographer", I just take pictures.
I was gathering data on cameras that cost thousands of dollars and telling myself I could not justify that. Just as I was about to settle for the "affordable" Z50, I saw your video.
I picked mine up with a 24-85mm USM, BG-E4 battery grip, Speedlite 430EX, one Canon battery and charger for less than $200 (USD). A quick trip to Amazon got me two more batteries (Kastar) for an additional $12.99 (USD). The lens creeps but it works fine.
I initially thought that having a heavier camera would be a problem but oddly I find that I am more comfortable with it.
I cannot be happier with my decision to listen to your observations on the 5D MK l. There was a definite learning curve as I now had to deal with small issues like vignetting but the quality of the photos I am getting is so superior to my D3200. Perhaps I'm just learning more, I don't know.
Either way, this was the best move for me and I could not be happier with the results.
    Thank you again.

"Magic" has always been the word I've used to describe the classic 5d, too. I think most of it's look is attributed to the size of the pixel surface area on the sensor. Something about the larger pixels capturing greater amounts of light or something like that. This camera always seemed to have a 3D effect and wide dynamic range.

People say you can always get whatever colors you want if you shoot RAW and work on the photos in post. But first of all, I've never found that to be the case. You always have two colors to deal with, not one. "Getting rid of" a green cast, for example, means changing the greens to more red, etc. And second, it's a huge extra hassle, because presets never work the same on all images. So yes, I love "canon colors" (from my 5DMkII), and for that reason haven't upgraded it to something like the Sony A7RII for pro use. I have used some smaller, much cheaper cameras (Lumix G7, for example) for casual use though, and I always just love the colors when I return to the Canon after a bit of not using it (it a little big and heavy, after all, for less serious stuff). It's not something to be dismissed as mere Canon fanboyism or whatever.

Hey, just wanted to say that your video greatly assisted me in deciding to go out and buy a 5D classic. I love it so far. Wishing auto ISO was a thing for the manual modes but regardless, I like the challenges it gives me as I'm relatively new to shooting. Thanks for the video!

After my d3300 clicked its last click last year I picked one of these up for a couple hundred bucks after reading some reviews online and was just blown away by how much I loved this camera! The viewfinder is so much better than a cropped sensor dslr, the colors are so much better than my nikon was, the menu was short a sweet, im not worried about breaking it, and it has plenty of detail! The only complaint I could have is high iso performance but considering its age/price what can you expect?

Nice one, some years ago i sold my Canon 400D with kit lens and bought the 5D classic instead. I only use 2 lenses the 50 mm 1.8 and a 40 mm pancake. The camera is rock solid build and every time the shutter goes *clunk* your hart jumps a little ;-) - some real mechanical sound :-D

My first camera, Have been using it for 3 years with the 50mm 1.8 and a 28mm 2.8 and haven't upgraded yet. Used it for street & travel, for weddings & events, portraits, and even fashion.
the only drawback as mentioned is limited ISO, and for me that it is has a kind of a slow buffer when shooting fast (sports etc).

The old 5D when coupled with quality lenses will remain a highly useful camera for as long as any of them are left still working. I put 100K exposures or so on mine over almost 13 years and made printouts as large as 24x48 and only passed it on to the next generation in the family when I decided I'd like something a little more modern and more flexible - the Mark IV.

I have a 5d, and I shot it every day until 1/2/2018, when I dropped it from about 5'....right on the lens (35mm f2 IS). The lens spent a whole month at Canon getting fixed, but they wouldn't even look at my 5d. The only thing wrong with it is the AF box is a little crooked, so the AF is not accurate. I can manual focus it and it works like it did when it was new. I bought a 6d to replace it, but the colors just look terrible to me. The best thing I ever did for my photography is shoot a 5d with a 35mm lens for almost an entire year - that was my only lens. You have to overcome all the limitations of a single prime and the cameras limitations. Auto ISO on the 6d and the absurd high ISO capabilities makes me feel like a cheater now. 5d and a single prime (35 or 50) would be my best recommendation to any and all beginners.

I got my 5D after I got my 6D, and I do like the 5D for all the reasons you do. but I will say that my 6D's auto white balance is much more accurate than that of my 5D. The two things I still wish the 5D had are autofocus microadjust and fixing ISO adjustment to 1-stop increments. the AFMA isn't terribly important, but it does make me not want to use certain lenses that are far enough off

This is a good camera, however, buy with caution, i bought mine used back in 2011, its a good camera but its a model that had a recall for the mirror box assembly, mine fell out after one week of owning it, canon did repair it for free, but support for this camera has long been cancelled. The circuit board and lcd display failed shortly after a month of ownership. This was a known issue with this model. Alot of the 5d classics that are for sale may inherit all these issues. I mean, for 100 bucks its a deal, but buy with caution.
