    I bought a 2nd hand 5D a couple of years ago and the image attributes were just so special, even though the image quality, technically speaking, was similar to my 60D. Unfortunately I began to notice some slight faults in the sensor that was likely caused by dust. Those faults could not be rectified without a sensor replacement that was going to cost around AUD800 so the camera is sitting in a cupboard waiting for the day that a sensor refit will be cost effective. For me, the big issue with buying a 5D is the lack of a sensor cleaning mechanism that the future 5D models had. I'd recommend that anyone buying one should consider making it a one lens setup or making lens changes in only the cleanest of environments.

    • @Nikborman

      I had a 1Ds mark 2 and that had the same problem, no cleaning mechanism. I stopped changing lenses because of the dirt. I used to go on commercial shoots and have to duck into a corner to change lenses and reduce the amount of dust going into the camera. I sold it for that reason. I created great photos.

    I just bought the Canon 5d off eBay for $270. So far I've done two shoots with them. One Wedding (which I hate doing, and was a huge risk and wouldn't recommend) and one photoshoot for models. After using it, I sold my other camera. The 5d is a photographers camera. It doesn't do anything except photos. It doesn't have insane autofocus that can track subjects sprinting across the frame. But what it does, it takes pictures, and it does it as well as or better than any of the current Sony, Canon, Nikon's out there. I would never recommend the 5d as a first camera. You'll get frustrated from missing shots, and having to work hard to create decent low light shots and a bunch of other things. But if you've been using an APS-C and want to upgrade. And you know your way around a camera, you know how to shoot in Manual. Then this is one of the best camera's you'll ever own. It's as good as anything minus the bells and whistles.
    If you are a headshot photographer. The 5d is the best option. I cannot recommend it enough.

    Proves that many of us are wasting our money chasing the newest gear. Many of us should stick with our gear much longer than we do. The Canon 5D and Nikon D700 demonstrate that digital cameras can last a long time.

    • @deanoplym
      @deanoplym 6 лет назад +2

      Donald Groves my d700 takes better photos than my d800. Not as much dynamic range and resolution, but the photos have a film like quality that the newer d800 can’t replicate.

    • @Dngrov257
      @Dngrov257 6 лет назад +1

      dean bradley, I bought a Canon 5D4 not long after it was released and I do love the camera, but there are situations in which I think my 6 year old 6D renders better. As you say, the DR and resolution are not as good, but I think informal portraits in low light situations look somewhat better.

      I've been using a broken 12-year old Rebel XTi/400D for all my photos (which can be found online for under $100 with lens, I only use it because I can't quite afford an upgrade quite yet) and although it takes a lot more effort, you can still get shots just as good as the newest camera on the market.

    • @Dngrov257
      @Dngrov257 6 лет назад +2

      Kristian. The XTi was my first DSLR. I gave it to my niece a few years ago and it still works. I took many good photos in decent light. Its weakness is low light, which was typical of cameras back then. It is a very good little camera.

    • @traviskitteh
      @traviskitteh 6 лет назад

      I had the same problem with my Rebel t5. Decent stills and colors, but the shutter mechanism didn't distribute the weight well during shutter firing, meaning that there would always be some motion blur in lowlight images, no matter how steady the shooter's hand.

I purchased my 5D Mk1 back in 2008 and have recently branched into macrophotography (crystals and mineral specimens) as well as very recently started sticking my toe into studio protrait work and at my level of competency my 5D Mk 1 will certainly do me! Cheers and thanks from Down Under.

    I picked up an original 5D at the beginning of the year, and have used it exclusively for all my walkaround shooting where I'm not using film. Pair that with some solid vintage manual focus lenses, and that's all I really need most of the time. I do have newer gear and "nice lenses" but they usually stay in the bag except for events and photoshoots.

  • @pitumoe

    I've got a 5d MkI and I know I'll keep it forever, but I'm impressed with this comparison. I agree about the lack of performance on the 5d at high ISO, but at "normal" light conditions it performs very very respectably. I didn't expect how similar the "canon color" would be between sensors so apart in time.

      40D isn't far off either and has 10mp with anti dust system. 14bit RAW. some weathersealing. CF door opening error message. custom settings on mode dial. basic live view as well. different processor yes, but very similar colours and bite to the files to the 5D. once video got introduced Canon sensors seemed to get soft. much preferred my 40D and 5D files to the 7D ones.

      edshotsdotcodotuk Nah, I had both 5D and 40D as backup/second body, frankly, I barely used the 40D. It never rendered the colors in that lovely way the 5D did, and the shots never came close to being as sharp. Granted, I was probably spoiled by 5D and I got the 40D later on, but still.
      And I've used the 30D on couple on occasions and Ed Mayes is right. The output and the character of the files were nearly identical between the 30D and the 5D, granted, without the obvious benefits such as more resolution and detail as well as better High ISO that come with FF sensor, but that signature look was there. 40D left me a bit disappointed in that regard.

    I've had the 5D MkI and 50mm f1.8 as my standard set-up for several years. I've just jumped ship to a brand new A7iii for several reasons; one being portability, video, SD card not flash card, Wifi etc
    Hands down the 5D is an incredible camera and there is no way that I'd have gone for the MkIV. I wanted to leave DSLR for Mirrorless and nothing compares to the Sony for that. I think that the point that a lot of people have missed here is that between these two set-ups; go for the MkI - especially if you're new to photography. It's a great camera and will do you proud.

    Hi,
    This is an older video but a good one, v helpful thanks!
    I'm considering the 5D i or ii, but how do you work around the AF with wide apertures? I understand only the very centre AF point is decent on the i & ii, so how do you frame the eyes sharply with such shallow depths of field? Focus & recompose would surely through the focus out?!
    Many thanks!

And it was an excellent purchase, from than i have shooted on it around 50.000 photos, still working pretty well on ISO 100-1000 with also budget lenses 50mm 1.8 and 40mm 2.8 and its still a beautifull experience!

    Hi. Im thinking about buing Mark1 or Mark2. I definitelly agree with this video and its nice to hear it in the sea of G.A.S, videos. I was using my 550D until now and just bought Ricoh GRII which is great camera, but i does not suits me well. 550D was like part of my body. So i decided to buy some Canon FF in exchange for Ricoh. My question is, what u think about aging of these cameras? Will they life with me for a while? Or what should i test during shopping?

    Hi, I've been using the 5Dc for a year now and the only AF lens I tried on it was the 50mm 1.8 STM and the auto focusing is really bad. Is it just because of the STM technology is newer than the camera or it is like that with all of the lenses?

As a semi-pro photographer meaning I get paid sometimes, I am really thinking about a 5d classic to accompany my 60d workhorse with all EF lenses, step back in tech but possibly a different league than my 60d being FF, what would you think of the Canon 40mm pancake on the 5dc, it's great on my 60? One thing worries me is the "drop out mirror" issue...

      D4 and d800 are better if funds allow these days. A d300 at low ISO`s has exact same images as d700 and d3 by the way, I tested it. You cannot tell them apart and d300 are very cheap now

    The quality of the images from the Mk1 and Mk2 has always been great even by today's standards. But it wasn't until the Mk3 when Canon put a legitimate autofocus system into the mix. I remember when I was on my Mk2 and all of the Nikon D700 people were just eating my lunch over their autofocus system. And they deserved to brag. The first two 5D's were and still are very good cameras, but once you've gone at least Mk3, it's hard to look back. But as you said, for a casual shooter who doesn't need a 60+ point system, the Mk1 or Mk2 are a huge bang for the buck. Cool video man!

      I agree 100%. From mark III on the 5d series is all it needs to be for basically all sorts of professional use. 5d classic has some very nice IQ at moderate iso settings but the camera is a dinosaur and as much as I love it (I still keep one) I wouldn´t dare to shoot a paid asignment with it that requires autofocus.

      June 2020 and bought a 2nd hand 5Dii, like brand new only no scratches or bumps, it was looking very fresh and 7k clicks on the body... the 2nd hand prices are fabulous and great value for money at £500 only.
      The reason I went for a 5Dii was that I bought 2x 6D which BOTH failed. I therefore do not trust the 6D and decided for something that has been heavily used by pro photographers over a prolonged time but still at a bargain price.
      This body is good enough for 95% of my needs, I used the 5Dii over a few weeks under various conditions such as low-light /sun /rain /indoors /outdoors etc and this 5Dii is still a VERY capable camera.
      Since I'm mainly a stills-image shooter who shot for around 25 years (pre-digital as well) and I have very little interest in video, so I'm looking forward to use it for many years to come and even use it for some paid jobs.
      I'm not shooting sports and don't need exceptional crazy frame rates. Auto focus is good enough if you use the center spot only and I also find RAW files up to ISO 3200 to be good enough to sell to wedding clients if you use good lenses (might need a SLIGHT noise reduction in Lightroom on a few occasions).
      Normally its only photographers who pixel-peep, clients are more focused on moments and emotions instead of technicality.
      I have no regrets..... Going forward if I break something, or if my gear is stolen, then I will get the 5Dii again since I am a stills shooter only

    Good video. Good honest examination. I own three 5D Classics. Won't get rid of them. The 5D Classic was my first professional digital camera. For those who have never shot with one, the realization that the Canon 5D Classic has never really been improved upon comes as something of a shock. If I grab any other full-frame, it is usually my Sony A7RIII--but I enjoy the 5D Classic more.

It was great for street photography just like this because it was cheap so if anything happened to the camera it wouldn’t matter! When people say the images have a certain look to them they aren’t lying, the mark i was really bad at color accuracy which gave it a very artistic look that I fell in love with especially for portraits.

    i shoot with a 5d classic as a professional from weddings to night life events and that i can tell you is you need to know what you doing with this camera to match the new cameras especially in the night the iso goes up to 3200 and sometimes it is difficult in low light but with a 50mm 1.4 or a 24-70 2.8 you are good to go and the most important the picture quality is top notch for today standards

    I bought the 5D in 2007 and still use it day. But recently I bought a Sony RX 100 mk5. It made me realise that whilst the 5D still takes amazing photos, the newer models with flip out screens make landscape photography far easier. Added, the 5D back screen isn't great. Everything looks a little washed out so it's only when you download the images you get to see what you really took. It does teach you to use the histogram though. So I would say the 5D images are still amazing but the peripheral technology that makes taking photos more fun/easier or seeing what you've taken has really loved on

    Bought a 6D when it first came out - absolutely love it. Then needed a back-up (semi pro weddings etc.) and found a sub 10k shutter 5D for £300 (4 years ago). Yes the 6D has incredible range, low light AF and blistering with features... but.... the 5D has that magical feel and image quality - almost more organic. Which one would I keep? Both! would I upgrade either? No! Great review - proves you don't need to spend loads and get the latest. Oh, and by the way... the results I get from my 20D with 70-210 2.8 ISL (mk1) are scarily good. It's worth nothing now, but it will stay in my bag.

    Hi Pablo! Your channel is really nice, congrats ! I'm a 750D user, and I feel I get amazing shots with it, suffering from time to time with ISO and all, but really wondering about stepping up where... • @edshotsdotcodotuk
      @edshotsdotcodotuk 6 лет назад +1

      the 750D isn't too far off the same image quality to the 5D if you downscale to the same 12mp from the 750D's 24mp. what lenses do you currently own and what subject matter do you shoot? those are the two main factors when it comes to gear anyway.
      I'm a Sony shooter from having a Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus and Canon setups over the last 12 years. mirrorless for about half of that. the different sensor sizes really comes down to detail and colour more than high ISO. the smaller sensor allow for smaller lenses which still retain bright apertures so the ISO can be lowered. APS-C is quite the sweet spot in terms of size and output. the main reason I have an A7Rii is that my promo work does get blown up to A0 or larger for posters during the Edinburgh Fringe. my live gig work is done on an A6300 due to the files being downsampled (usually to 12mp) and the focussing system covering more of the frame.
      the lighter the gear the more likely I'll take it out with me (A7Rii with the Samyang 35mm 2.8 is my daily). Sony's charging via USB has been a godsend on multiple occasions. their dynamic range is incredible. the video really nice a detailed.
      go with whichever company has the lenses you want (with Sony you can adapt most to it which is a bonus) and the features you need.
