    I was using the 5D until 2014.Most of my favorite photos are shot with this camera, but unfortunately it is Dinosaur compared to my a7riii which is half the size. I still own the 5D and refuse selling it.The color science of this camera is fantastic. Specifically for portraits

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  2 года назад +11

      I think you are right it excels for portraits, plus i like the sound of the shutter lol. It is a dinosaur but dinosaurs are cool too sometimes. I like using the 5d despite its limitations. Modern cameras for work though, they make life so much easier.

    I used My old 5d mainly for landscapes. This technique was a game changer. The dynamic range of the eye and brain sensor still outperforms the dynamic range of modern sensors and often I still use this technique. The trick is to keep it natural looking. I used 3 brackets normal and +/- 1.5 stops. The 5d still can produce high quality images. The only limit was the auto focus and I love live view for composing the image. For its price the 5D has got to be the best bargain in secondhand equipment I wish I hadn't sold it.

    The dynamic range here reminds me of the 16 mp m4/3 sensor. That’s not a criticism. It’s perfectly acceptable if you pay attention to what you are doing. Dynamic range is a bit overhyped and too many people are deathly afraid of shadows in their photography. Shadows add depth to an image and shouldn’t be eliminated.

      i'd say from both online tests and personal findings that the 16mp m43 sensors have about a stop advantage over the 5dc, which is still very good. Just goes to show that you don't need a ton of dynamic range for good photographs.

      Considering how old it is, with the inherent risks of electronics or mirror failure, sensor dust, incompatible technology and so on I think this Canon has a big following.

    Ok so I don't have the classic but I have a new to me 5D2 which man oh man I love and you are so right about the bracketing. That truly does bring out all the dynamic range even in the 5D2. I still love shooting on it and the only thing that I truly wish it had is a tilting screen it would make it so much easier to use out in the field shooting landscape photos. I would not shoot anything else in my opinion for the IQ alone it is just so good

    Thanks for posting this video. I'm a huge fan of the 5d classic and found this to be very helpful in how to go about post processing difficult files. i'm curious, do you have any experience with the EOS 1ds mk1 (11.1 megapixel)? There is very little posted about this camera online and seems to be almost forgotten. I believe there is a certain magic in these early sensors where the designers were trying so hard to compete with film. I've recently purchased one and would love to see your thoughts on the camera.

    Belting video Martin. This is exactly what 5Dc users need to be seeing. Its an exceptional old camera which needs to be understood to get the best out of it. It is possible for the jpegs to look great, however as this videos shows, a few mins on LR can make all the difference. Really look forward to your videos, thanks 👍👍

    May I add that the Canon 5D’s 12megapixel full frame sensor has a massive pixel pitch of 9 microns, which makes its low light performance at base ISO100 quite exceptional for its age. When shooting in RAW, I set the camera to lowest contrast in monochrome with a custom white balance and no sharpening or noise reduction switched off. In this way I can rely upon the histogram to show me everything I need to know about the RAW file and it’s 11.1 stop dynamic range. In post, I can convert and adjust everything accordingly. To put things in perspective, I have an Olympus E-1 which has a dynamic range of only 7.7 stops - a very different kind of beast that is excellent in low contrast lighting, but otherwise hopeless in strong daylight - unless on the lookout for a Kodachrome aesthetic. The Canon 5D is a fantastic camera, I have two, and shall never part with them.

    Great video Martin. I’m not a Canon shooter but I tend to buy older second hand gear (currently Nikon d750) and use HDR/bracketing quite a bit as I think Lightroom makes a great job of it. Martin, thanks so much for reinvigorating my appreciation and interest for the 5D. I haven’t used it much but have held into it because I inherently knew it was good. Please keep showing us what the 5D can do. One question: does the in-camera histogram represent the tones in the file or those showing on the display? Thanks

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  2 года назад +2

      the histogram represents the jpeg file based on the picture profile settings you set. This is true even if you are shooting raw only as the histogram reads only the jpeg. So if you shoot in monochrome and make the contrast maximum the histogram will show this even if it only records a raw file.

    • @MrDunk66
      @MrDunk66 2 года назад

      Is there a picture profile that bestrepresents the raw data, maybe natural?

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  2 года назад +2

      Yes I use neutral with contrast set to minimum. Thats the largest dynamic range you can show in a jpeg on the 5d and so is closest to the raw file. I have a settings video for the 5d on my channel that might help.

      Honestly as someone who has both cameras, I find the 5D classic in a league of its own. The skin tones, the dreamy magical 3d look. Only thing the mark 2 is better is that you can crop more because of more megapixels. The Color on the mark 2ndoesn’t seem anywhere near as good as the 5D classsic

    • @ESKATEUK
      @ESKATEUK 2 года назад +1

      @@Bigredfitnessmoshe only thing better is cropping? Do a video showing you using both cameras, as I don’t believe you have both. The only thing better about the classic is the colours in certain situations, even then it is down to personal preference. The 5D mkii is far sharper due to the higher megapixel count, with superior high iso performance, way better dynamic range… the only thing better about the 5D classic is the character of the images, nothing else looks like it. But to say the only thing 5D mkii does better is cropping is just a false statement.

    • @Bigredfitnessmoshe
      @Bigredfitnessmoshe 2 года назад +1

      @@ESKATEUK no need for any personal attacks. I have both cameras, and I just don’t like the mark 2 at all. Like you say, personal preferences. Maybe I wasn’t so clear. It’s likely a better technical camera as it was newer. So yes to iso, megapixels , dynamic range maybe etc. I was just saying I don’t like the images at all from that camera. You are entitled to your view . You do say the only thing better about the 5d classics is the character of the images. That’s all that matters to me. Same reason I don’t like the brand new Sony cameras that I have rented. Amazing cameras. Just lack that character

    Hello, I really enjoyed this video, just a side question, I haven't seen a video about the Canon 7D on your channel. Can you please explain what is the difference between 5d/6d/7d (mark1 each), wikipedia says that EOS 6D was made to fill the gap between 5d and 7d, but I don't quite understand what it means, honestly.

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  2 года назад +2

      ive never used the 7d, the 7d has nothing to do with the 5d and 6d, the 7d is a crop sensor camera and meant for wildlife etc with a faster shots per second. the 5d is a more pro range of bodies and the 6d is more entry level, however its not as simple as that because certain cameras were released at different times. I have a video detailing this though if you look through my video list :)

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  2 года назад

      It depends on the look. you want, the 5d ii is a little more flexible. Id usually promote a balanced exposure with the 5dii though. If you cant get a balance you have to decide more based on how you want your final image to look, do you want a high key bright look or a low key darker look. thats what it boils down to. Mostly though try to balance your shot and get it all in one if you can.

    Is it common to combine files to get one picture with the correct exposure? Do they call that tech bracketing? I’m always trying to get the combined pic in one shot. 5d has impressive color and range for such an old camera. Looking at picking one up to improve how I shoot

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  2 года назад +1

      I do it quite often because it suits my editing, i dont always do it though and i dont think its common. It really depends on the photo, i can do without it as well just depends. if i see that the histogram is really stretched ill shoot a bracketed exposure too. This technique is bracketing when shooting and exposure blending in post production.
