I like to replace the wimpy sounding PMGR Subaru starter in my 04 Subaru Forester with a real sounding Ford starter, but it would be too much work. I installed the biggest group size 24 F battery that would fit, and used all custom made 2 gauge battery cables, so the engine starts over faster and sounds less wimpy. I wanted to install a 1,000 CA battery like I did in my 1990 Ford Econoline van, but it would not fit. Looks like there's a place on the passenger side of the engine compartment where I can maybe install a 1,000 CA starting battery. Thanks for posting man. So I now know my hawkeye sti doesn’t have a bad starter. It makes a weird noise on cold starts. Like a screeching noise almost after the engine turns on like 6secs or so. I sit at 87 almost close to belts maintenance milage at 90k. Do you think the noise will go away after I replace all the belts?
I have a similar issue with my '02 WRX. When I start the car, especially on cold days, the starter fails to release and grinds the teeth for a few extra seconds after engine start (and key release). The serpentine belts have nothing to do with this (though I'm consistently tightening them as the outside temperature drops and they loosen up), nor does the timing belt, which I have also changed. I've tried spray lubricant (I believe it was silicone spray), but that had no effect on getting the gear pin to release from the flywheel any easier...
Hellow MrSubaru, since I imported my car from japan I had issue where where I go start her up its cranks very slow and longer, could that be bad starter or alternator? or can a misfire make that happen?
How do I replace the drive gear on an automatic transmission starter so it will fit a manual transmission? I have a few starters for my 2000 Forester A/T. I would like to change the drive gear on one so it will fit my 1999 Forester M/T.
My 04 wrx drove fine . Parked it after a wash came out about . 1 hour later went to turn key . Did a slow turn over then stopped mid roar. Seen a little poof of smoke come up. Have all light still. Just went turn my key all I hear is a single click . Guessing it's a burnt fuse or wire from the starter too terminal maybe
Mr Subaru I always enjoy your videos. I do have a question that google can't seem to answer. is it possible to swap out the 3.0 engine to the 3.6 for 06 tribeca
+Conrad Bottorff swap the EZ36R in. It's engine harness, it's ECU, and it body harness. Then you'd have to merge the two harnesses. You'd need wiring diagrams for the 06 Tribeca and for the vehicle you got the EZ36R and it's harness from. If your EZ30D in the Tribeca is dead or going out, just put it back stock unless you want a very long and drawn out project. It's not a plug and play swap.
I replaced my starter and car still won't start. My battery is brand new and alternator and ignition switch only about 2-3 years old and all fuses are good as well, I'm stumped and wondering what it could be... by the way it's a 97 impreza L

Thank you for the video. Recently I was trying to get the starter off on my forester 11 to do some cleaning. Before getting lower nut I decided to get the upper bolt first and after a couple of turns it kind of stuck. It was even hard to tight it back. Any ideas what it might be? Or what can be done? I'm afraid to strip or brake a bolt. Thank you
Just old man. Spray some penetrating oil on it next time. U can even put a little bit of anti seize on the bokts before reinstalling, there not just going to fall off, obv. Also, taking a wire brush and cleaning the bolts is a grwat idea. Anything i take off of my Subaru, this is like step 1 for me now. Cleaning the bolts lol. I live in north east pa tho, so wvery bokt i touch something is wrong with Mine is also a 2010, so theres that. I bought my car used only like a year ago. N when u look under it, its weird. The entire front half has zero rust on anything, kinda like every part is brand new or something its insane. The rear, not so much lol. I also have found, crc marine corrosion spray to be an absolute miracle worker I say get some if that, u can even spray it on the bolts on something like this when u finish putting it back together to keep the moisture off of it longer Its the absolute only product that dries n actually protects if applied good, for an entire winter. Excellent stuff.

My starter is shot and one my bolts snapped and I don't even wanna touch the other any tips on how to move forward
Hellow MrSubaru, since I imported my car from japan I had issue where where I go start her up its cranks very slow and longer, could that be bad starter or alternator? or can a misfire make that happen?
+Tu Pimp A Caterpillar I'd get the battery checked first. From there, check the battery cables and ends.
MrSubaru1387 ok thank you!
What do you do if it’s hitting the flywheel and your using the correct starter and followed these steps?
You bought the long option vs the standard short
How do I replace the drive gear on an automatic transmission starter so it will fit a manual transmission? I have a few starters for my 2000 Forester A/T. I would like to change the drive gear on one so it will fit my 1999 Forester M/T.
My 04 wrx drove fine . Parked it after a wash came out about . 1 hour later went to turn key . Did a slow turn over then stopped mid roar. Seen a little poof of smoke come up. Have all light still. Just went turn my key all I hear is a single click . Guessing it's a burnt fuse or wire from the starter too terminal maybe
Checked battery voltage?
No but all my door bells n whistles are dingin
Mr Subaru I always enjoy your videos. I do have a question that google can't seem to answer. is it possible to swap out the 3.0 engine to the 3.6 for 06 tribeca
+Conrad Bottorff yes. It is possible. It'd be a lot of work with wiring harness, ecu, etc swapping.
MrSubaru1387 what exactly need to be done.
So you turn the key and nothing happens?
Yes, i get one click and then nothing
All my lights and audio system work as intended though
@@sorryaaahhh7648 did you test for power at the starter?
@@sorryaaahhh7648 sounds like you may have a bad connection.
So I put a brand new starter in but every time I put it to ignition it clicks and the battery goes dead, any ideas?
Sounds like a bad connection. Check cable ends.
Will this also work for a 2006
Question please: Can I replace a (is it) size 14 starter motor out of a EJ20 motor and put in my EJ18 (which had a size 12 starter motor in it)? Any advice would be great, thanks.
+Robert Bell what transmission? As long as both are manual or both are automatic transmission, it should work.
I’m having trouble connecting the starter positive cable to the solenoid wire ? Please help !
I have a 2005 legacy GT wagon, it's got a loud whine on startup only when it's cold, could this be a starter issue?
Subaru guy I NEED HELP!!! I have an 05 impreza wagon rs that has a crank no start and not sure why? It's always started now it just turns and sounds a Lil different?? Ideas please. Fingers crossed it isn't timing chain. It was off and I was working on putting new slides in my calipers and after I let it down I did hear a very weird noise from what I thought would have been passenger side front I was on drivers rear. After I tightened lugs and put tools away I went to start it and it just turns and turns ... help
Hi friend
Is it Some for subaru outback 3.0 2007?
One question what is the size of the bolt that is on top of the flange holding the ground cable, and where can I find the flange. In what store
The long bolt? Top of the starter? Should be an M12x1.25. Not sure on length. Have to buy from Subaru.
@@MrSubaru1387, Thank you but I am talking about the one on top next to the slave cylinder.
when test the starter, is the key at off or on position? mine has no voltage while the key is at off position.
thanks
Try taking a starter from a 2010 Subaru tribeca! Its a nightmare trying to get to the bottom bolt on the starter. Lol
Easier to access on those from the underside.
Mr S, would you know if aa 94,95,96, 98,99 00 starter would fit a97 motor I’m going second hand and they only have these yrs no 97 models in wrek yard ty!😎
I live in north east pa tho, so wvery bokt i touch something is wrong with
Mine is also a 2010, so theres that.
I bought my car used only like a year ago.
N when u look under it, its weird. The entire front half has zero rust on anything, kinda like every part is brand new or something its insane.
The rear, not so much lol.
I also have found, crc marine corrosion spray to be an absolute miracle worker
I say get some if that, u can even spray it on the bolts on something like this when u finish putting it back together to keep the moisture off of it longer
Its the absolute only product that dries n actually protects if applied good, for an entire winter.
Excellent stuff.
What about grounds?
Hey mr. Subaru quick question. I had just replaced the starter on my 97 subaru legacy but when I try to turn it over it makes a weird sound like its not get any power to the engine. really dont want to part with my baby
Could you send me a video clip of the issue? MrSubaru1387@gmail.com
