  • I have a complete rebuild of one o this units, but I think is a little vauge since I explain to refer to the teardown video to do the "Reverse of Removal" which is not always plausible. So here I make this video to supplement on the assembly video and the teardown as well.

Great videos Hiram! I've never worked on transmissions before but because of your excellent videos I tore apart and rebuilt a 4L60E just for learning and fun. Never thought I would tackle a transmission but I did and it went great. Kudos to people like you that are willing to share their knowledge - got to love RUclips!

Bro - You're like a genius when it comes to transmissions. You must have rebuilt a thousand of them to know what you know. So many important things to remember - like not putting the long bolts in the wrong spots and locking up the sun shell. Amazing! Thanks for these vids. I was able to install new 3/4 clutch packs in my 4L60E by watching these vids. My lack of knowledge caused me to break the TCC lock up solenoid when I tried to remove the pump before removing it. Luckily I found a repair kit for the solenoid - cut the wires and splice in the replacement. I did order a new harness too but didn't have time to wait for it to arrive and my local parts store was able to get the repair kit overnight. Wasn't easy to find though because getting a part number for them was tough. But in the end all was good. Thanks again!

I'm only half way through the video and this is super helpful. I was doing a trans fluid change on my 03 Gmc envoy and i think i chipped a piece of the valve body gasket while getting the old filter seal out so i wanted to be safe and just replace the gaskets and separator plate. worse case scenario they have 251,000 miles on them so i guess why not. i had never removed a valve body before and i saw several components i was unfamiliar with but this video is helping me make sense of them so thank you

Awesome videos man! I have a quick question for you. I've got an '05 Cadillac escalade esv AWD and after a decent drive (15-30 miles/minutes) down the highway it shifts hard from first to second after slowing or stopping but shifts perfectly after i shut it off for a minute maybe 2 at most an restart the truck, also perfect shifting around town. I'm thinking possibly a 1-2 control solenoid so I'm going to attempt to change that out but I'm not sure which is the 1-2 and which is the 3-4 solenoid. Could you help me out with which solenoid or any other ideas of what could be wrong?

This is a great step by step. My 4L60e has reverse, 1st, and 2nd but won't shift into 3rd. Just stays in 2nd or downshifts to 1st at stop lights. I replaced both shift solenoids but nothing changed. I am now rebuilding the valve body, replacing the harness, and installing pinless accumulators.
There was no spring for the 3-4 piston that you installed at the 1m 30s mark in your video. I will get one with the new kit. Is it really necessary? I read somewhere that you can actually leave out that spring as well as the 3-4 piston, pin, and check ball. Both springs behind the 1-2 piston were fine. What's your opinion?
I also found some light swirl marks up in the bore of the 3-4 accumulator. I do think these would affect the seal around the piston unless I honed the bore or left the piston out all together.
The spacer plate looked good but I will check the ball seats under magnification before reusing it.
I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks. 2001 C5 Corette. Frank D (Ratbiz)

I was wondering do you really need that little spreader spring that goes inside that pressure control screen on the separator plate? I pulled my valve body off my f-body to mod the TCC isolator valve that little spring was a pain to keep in place I finally just put vasaline on it to hold it up as I put the valve body back on just wanted to know if its really needed.

I am wondering if you have ever heard of a loud whistle sound coming from the transmission (4l60) at various speeds, even reverse does it. The sound doesn't change it's pitch, just it's loudness. Worse in cold weather. Sometimes not at all if it's warm. If I get on it a little harder it goes away, Sometimes you back off the gas and it goes away. Maybe coming from elsewhere? (It was suggested that it could be a bad oil filter back-check valve or a bad fuel pump, the oil filter got changed no difference. Fuel pump, hasn't been touched.) Any ideas?

Lastly, when the wheel is being turned it does not want to take of as it should. Do you know what the case may be?

I rebuilt my Subaru 2009 Forester 2.5 X non-turbo 4EAT automatic transmission and valve body.
    I have two issues:
1- Every morning, when I start the engine and pick “R” or “D” to move, the car does not move. I have to wait 30-40 sec either in "P" or I can move between other gears, so the car moves. The car will move immediately if I accelerate the engine around 2500 RPM.
2- When the engine is “Cold” and make I make a complete stop the engine stalls.

My 4L60E no longer has reverse but my 2nd and 4th gears are working great, which leads me to believe it's a leak in the reverse apply circuit. The reverse works intermittently and when it works, it works great, so I don't think it's the clutch packs. Would rebuilding the valve body fix an issue with a leaky reverse circuit?
