I wouldn't exactly say he's underrated haha...he's released 7 little barrie albums and accomplished shit loads more with other bands and musicians including weller and primal scream to name but a few!

I”m here because Barrie just finished touring with Liam and I’m finding out more about him, he’s such a great guitarist 🎸he stays in the shadows on stage with Liam and John Squire, nothing wrong with that but he’s so talented a star 🌟

I always really liked John McVie's bassline in this song. The way it moves around, both rhythmically and melodically is like having the floor moving beneath your feet; it's unsettling in just the right way. I absolutely stole that idea for one of my own tunes.

Can listen to Peter Green all day long. For me the greatest British Guitarist and have a real spot for Danny Kirwan. Utterly criminal he's so unknown to the vast majority of people and was such a killer guitarist. Really nice seeing this song covered and also in such a good way with a different twist to it. Weirdly have been hearing Danny's name mentioned over the last few months and hearing him in songs every now and again out of the blue.

Danny Kirwan told me he joined ‘Peter Green’s group’ at sixteen, the obituaries said seventeen, I don’t know who was right. Danny always called it ‘Peter Green’s group’, never ‘Fleetwood Mac.’ I don’t think I realised it was Fleetwood Mac he was talking about until I met John Mayall’s manager at the Hammersmith Odeon some years later and asked him if Danny was coming (Peter was playing too) since I hadn’t seen Danny in a couple of years since he’d moved to Holland with his Dutch girlfriend. I can’t remember Danny ever saying the words ‘Fleetwood Mac,’ just ‘Peter Green’s group.’ It didn’t matter what the name of the band was anyway, it was Danny’s past not mine. Danny told me about the ‘Munich Incident’ and how badly Peter had been affected by being dosed by what he called a ‘German Aristocratic Black Magic Cult.’ Although he told me he’d played on Albatross and I met Peter with him, I never thought of Danny as being an ex-member of Fleetwood Mac but of having once played with Peter Green in a group . The only one he spoke of was Peter anyway. Sometimes I’m amazingly lacking in either curiosity or being able to connect the dots, even when they are drawn out for me. :-) perhaps Danny did say the band was called Fleetwood Mac at some point and I either didn’t hear or didn’t care, anyway I’d forgotten if I did know and John Mayall’s manager set me right. He asked me how Danny was. Fine I told him, last time I saw him. Because I didn’t know the official line on Danny, that he was a homeless alcoholic mentally damaged shell of the man he had been, I just saw Danny as he was, perfectly sane, not addicted to anything (except for telling jokes) and not living in the park but at his mum’s while he went for lots of auditions (quite successfully) as an extra, model, and sometimes actor (I was in two Woody Allen plays, “God”& “Death” where Danny played Woody Allen.
I was amazed years later to read all these stories about Danny being some ‘lost soul’ who lived in parks and homeless shelters while cadging drinks off people in bars telling them of his past glories in Fleetwood Mac and refusing to ever play the guitar again because his hands shook too much or something. I thought this was very funny because Danny had no problem playing my guitar when he’d come round my place and sometimes we had very enjoyable sing songs or I’d play Danny some of my extremely basic songs with my very rudimentary guitar playing. Danny had the patience of a saint! :-) But he never left my place saying “Right, Leon, I’m off to bed in the park. Do you have any newspapers I could use as a blanket?”
I read the Independent newspaper interview with ‘Danny Kirwan’ and I found it very funny.
The man in the photograph being interviewed wasn’t Danny Kirwan at all (but I’m sure he was happy to take the money, though I bet it was in cash) and I couldn’t help but giggle at it. Danny must have pissed himself. No wonder the ‘Danny Kirwan’ who gave the interview wasn’t interested in playing the guitar... he probably couldn’t, since he wasn’t Danny Kirwan.
Danny escaped them all. The media. The Fame Machine.!They didn’t even know what he looked like, he looked nothing like they expected him to. A violent attack disfigured his face. He turned it to advantage and could laugh about it, at least he did when he told me the story at my flat back in the nineties.
But, yes, Danny always called it ‘Peter Green’s group.’
What is really missing from the story that is told is how much Danny loved, respected and cared for Peter. How much he felt he owed to Peter as friend and mentor. I know this because Danny would speak in this way regarding Peter so often. Danny never mentioned nor criticised any other member of the band, and he only spoke of Peter with concern and love.
I find it remarkable that Danny never bothered to answer all of the quite frankly horrible things that have been written and said about him since he left FM in ‘72 by many people, including ex-band members. Danny’s silence on the subject is indicative of his class, style and strength of character. I’d not have been so silent, but then I’m not Danny. It must have hurt, but Danny’s personality was always very up and humorous. I’d assumed that Danny was East End Jewish, like Peter, and I’d had East end Jewish friends before that had likewise been very bright and humorous & fun to be around. Maybe I thought Danny was Jewish because he played Woody Allen when we met, or because his mum seemed to me the epitome of a tough but loving East end Jewish mum. His mum nearly punched me once, by mistake though. She’d just punched two Irish lads who’d tried to force their way in to rob her , they’d fucked off and she thought my ringing at the bell was their coming back for more. I told Danny later and we both cracked up laughing. But that was his mum, very protective and fierce in defence of what was hers.
I was amazed to read of the ‘sad life’ of Danny Kirwan when I knew him as a such a happy and fulfilled man. A very witty man. And very intelligent. We had many discussions late into the night on many themes. Or just shot the breeze about what’s going on in the world or in our lives. I didn’t listen to a lot of music with Danny, so much as make music, we’d muck about every now and then, if the mood struck. Mostly we’d joke. Danny loved singing joke songs. The Danny Kirwan the world mourns was another man from the one he actually was. I remember Danny with laughter.
When I read Danny’s obituaries I was greatly saddened at my friend’s passing, and yet greatly lifted & amused at the obituaries themselves ... not only for the false story of Danny’s life they contained, but several of them actually had photographs of two men who I didn’t know who they were but weren’t Danny, several carried photographs of the fake ‘Danny Kirwan’. Others carried photographs of Bob Weston! (Will the real Danny Kirwan please stand up!!!) The media are so lazy. Danny would have pissed himself laughing. I’ve looked far deeper into Danny’s life (or I should really say the various myths of his life) and music since Danny’s passing and I am at times amazed, amused, appalled and greatly inspired.
Danny’s life wasn’t a tragedy at all. It was a magnificent victory against the odds. Danny escaped the Fame & Media Machine, the vampiric soul eater of the Music Business. Danny lived out his life on pretty much his own terms and free of the burden of his past, the prison of fame. I think that’s pretty cool.
Well done Danny. And what a fucking amazing musician you were. I’m still smiling. Rest in ✌️ & 💗

Brother what a fabulous story for such a fabulous person....that is so fucking cool that he lived his life on his terms!! Alls I can say is thanku Danny Kirwan and Peter Green for the music that built the foundation of my life in music...
