24 minutes is the length most watched in it's entirety vs 10 that was few years ago now people slowed down and are enjoying things they watch sense COVID before COVID yes we rushed had short attention span but now we are calmer and enjoy longer content and 24 minutes is the sweet number it is like a tv show without commercials

She’s a Belgian Malinois, but that’s a common error.
I comment unrelated to the video topic, but can I say how appreciative it is to have your first Sponsor plug at the very beginning of the video. It lets us watch till the end without dreading the "Middle Commercial". People might not say anything cause its a small thing, but it does make watching more enjoyable. Keep it up! I've thought a lot of what I enjoy as a consumer after the Channel Review video you guys made. And it's fantastic to see Jamie's cinemaphotography development and Alec's comfort and growing as a host. So for me as a consumer, to answer the question posed at the Channel Review episode: I watch this channel to chill out and just watching you guys do your thing, meaning this episode "Katar Dagger part 2" could easily been 3 episodes.
I get you don't want to do the same clips over and over. But to watch Alec learn, fail, make jokes, struggle, succeed is the fun. I don't mind watching damascus being made for the hundredth time! There's always something new to learn or fascinating to watch.
I guess what I'm trying to say is: what feels like regurgitation and watering out of videos for you, is bliss for us! Because we get more videos to drench our Alec and Jamie thirst!
I'm gonna be honest i understand where you're coming from, Alec's personality is the reason we watch, but it's really a little dull when it's the same thing for 10 videos in a row, there's a reason views fall after a couple of parts when they're in a series. I understand we as viewers who are engaged we want to support them, i'd watch it if it was several parts too, but i much prefer more concise videos

Have you ever tried to forge a bronze sword before? You could narrate how it's different from working with steel
He did that already. It was when he was in his casting phase.

bronze is cast not forged.
@@CapOfXav No, he forged it out of a leftover billet of aluminium bronze Will got to restore his Fairbanks hammer (R.I.P. Fairbanks hammer).
Have you considered doing some kind of armor or a shield in Damascus... Getting it drawn in every direction to make big enough to use would be insanely challenging, not to mention getting it the sheet of Damascus down to 3mm or so. I wonder how many layers you'd have to have the steel so it would show some kind of pattern. Maybe a future project I may try... Great video as usual and I always learn from your content.

Love the bit of Meshuggah style music from 7:08
Those shots from your doggos eyes, with that reflection look like how CSI shot are on the back of the vehicle and they say: "Enhance!" and they zoom in on one of screws holding up the number plate "Enhance more!" and suddenly you see the reflection of the killer in the screw. In your case they would put on their sunglasses and say: "I had my eye on him the whole time!"

Just a suggestion, can we get fewer but longer videos.

Something you can try next time you have odd shaped puzzle pieces that you are trying to forge weld without them shearing is to incase the entire piece in mild steel. Essentially turning it into a canister. Doing this you can also reduce the chance of pattern distortion.
The hammer in sync to the music was pretty sweet.

Curious for when I'm doing work in the shop- how do you protect your dogs' feet from sharp or hot metal shards while still letting them hang out while you're working?
three things: they’re not there while filming the actual work, he keeps them in a separate area while working, or he lets them roam free…my money is on the former, because he’d be in deep trouble if they’re roaming free without protection while he’s working especially as their hearing would be harmed from the noise

It's an ancient Indian sword which is extremely flexible to the point of being whip like.
I watched a video by tyrell knifeworks recently where he welded sacrificial steel round his weird shapped damascus bits to hold them together during a forge weld.

Can someone with knowledge on the subject explain to me what those flakes that come off during power-hammering are? Is it some sort of slag and if so, what makes it form in an instant?
It’s known as scale. Hot iron reacts with oxygen in the air rapidly.
It is "scale" made of iron oxide (black rust).
Heating the iron makes it react to the oxygen in the air much more readily than room temp iron does, so it rapidly forms a thick layer of scale that then gets broken away by the hammer.

I would love if y’all would break up some of the montages just to give some more info about what’s going on. Just some reasoning behind why alec changes technique or whatever would be cool. Don’t know much about milling and black smithing so any relevant info would be cool to hear! Love the content, I’ve been watching since the engagement ring video. So cool to watch
My late Golden, Apollo, was quite the "counter cruiser". If you left it out, he would eat it. Still miss that old boy. He was a puppy his entire life.

@Alec There always seems to be a healthy amount of contingency in your blanks - I'd love to see a vide where you try to minimize the waste as much as possible and see if it changes your processes any.
Maybe you could make 2 identical projects weighing bother before and after, and doing one a standard way on one with the idea of wasting as little as possible?
8:35 Nomatter if a pattern doesn't turn out exactly the way you planned it can absolutely still be a beautiful product...
I buil RC cars from scratch out of aluminum... My builds rarely turn out the way I initially planned. I allways change things and roll with punches... and most times the end up being even cooler for it!
Imo symmetry is not beauty... In fact I allways make details to break symmetry and that allways makes things pop in a whole other way...
What a good dog! He left u some. My dogs would've ate it all. I had a 5 lb brisket marinating on the counter last week and it disappeared too.

Yo Alex, I got a question for you. Can you not use some sort of an induction heating to heat your material? I would believe that it would be a better way to heat the product so you don’t waste a bunch of propane or Mapp gas. Whatever it is that you’re using.
