      How are you going through 1-2 spools a day? We have two printers here: A CR-10 Smart with a 0.4 nozzle that runs about 60 mm/s, and an Ender 7 with a 0.8 nozzle with jerk and acceleration cranked way up that runs between 150 and 200 mm/s. I don't think we've ever went through even an entire spool in a day.

    • @thenextlayer
      @thenextlayer  Год назад +1

      I have two printers running mostly full-tilt, all the time. However, I think the reason I'm going through so many spools recently is because I bought like, every color in the rainbow, and had a ton of half-empty spools when I discovered the Gridfinity system (see my other video), and suddenly, I was printing tons of yellow, orange, green, red... whereas I normally print a TON of black. So... I emptied lots of spools. Also, I didn't say EVERY day... just that "on any given day." Not a precise measure by any means, and there are probably a lot of days I don't take out an empty spool. Also, I've been doing some BIG projects (3 kilos of filament for one of them)... so make sure you're subbed ;) Video coming next week.

    I do this cause as you say I'm doing all the requisite work anyway, but the huge shipping costs really undo the "free" filament. It costs as must in shipping alone as a roll of cheap filament on Amazon. Ya you get better filament for that cost, but it's really just get "better" filament for the same price you were going to pay for cheap filament, there's no "free" in there. If I wasn't doing all the stuff already it certainly wouldn't be worth my time over a 3 month time frame to get slightly better filament than I could get driving down the road to Micro Center and have right now.

    I have yet to get point for my created models, but I have the upload award at least.
    They did change the points for posted makes, now it's 100 points a month, but it rewards you better for prints of models without as many makes, or larger models. By strategizing, you can do it in 10 makes, but more likely in 12 or so.
    I have had my printer for just about a year now, I have redeemed my points for two rolls, and by the end of next month will have points for another 2 rolls. The points don't seem to expire, so wait until you have enough points for 2 rolls at a time and save shipping. Yes, the shipping is as expensive as a cheap roll, but the filament is good.

I just recently returned to the U.S. from my first ever trip. Such a wonderful experience. My wife and I are already talking about when we can go back.

  • @Darkbirdy
    @Darkbirdy 3 месяца назад

    It's a good idea, but the entire program is really only for 3D designers. If you're not a designer, there just aren't many ways to get points. If you're just a maker, you're going to be looking at, realistically, one spool for every 70 makes you share. If you're not just printing junk for the free filament (you'd have to be really bad at math to try that), and you don't do this for a living/have a big print farm, you're looking at seven or eight *months* of work for one free spool.
    And that's only if you're exclusive to Printables for your projects. If you do what most do and jump between Thingiverse, Printables, MakerWorld, and even retail files that you've paid for from Kickstarters, etc. it'll be far slower.
    All that hassle, for what, after shipping, probably turns into $15 worth of product per *year*.
    For non-creators, this is a dead promotion.

  • @Ajtech369

    When you say "it's Free, no strings attached", that means you literally don't need to do or pay anything to get it for free. So in this instance you really mean "It's kinda free" which means there are something you will need to do or pay before getting it. For someone who's just gotten my very first 3D printer 2 days ago (23 Sept, 2022) and whose only income is less than $5000 per year or less than $400 per month, it was awesome when a youtuber offered to send me the said 3D printer I got. Now figuring out how to pay for filament isn't easy for me and when I saw this video at first I was excited then as soon as you said "it's free, No strings attached, except you'll need to upload your models and hope lots of other people will like and download it." (Which again is at least 1 string attached....) I hope to find a way to learn how to make models and design my own stuff but since I have barely any money to use it's going to be forever.

    • @thenextlayer
      @thenextlayer  Год назад +13

      I don’t consider contributing to the community a string, I consider it behavior you’ll already be doing. But if you don’t have money to buy filament, why don’t I send you a roll on Amazon? It’s $20…

      Oh boohoo. Get over it. If you make so little, clearly you've got plenty of free time (also clear to see based on your long comment) so use free modeling software and learn to make interesting models. It costs zero dollars to do so. 3D printing isn't a right. If you have the ability to use a PC to slice models for your 3D printer, you can design shit too lol. Genuinely sad that you'd rather whine and cry about not getting literally free handouts without earning what you want, looking for pity and sympathy, when you could go be productive with your time. Why do you feel so entitled? Genuinely curious

    Regarding the shipping costs of rolls of filament from Prusa (any of the filaments that they sell in the 1kg size, I haven't experimented with other sizes). Lets say the shipping cost of one roll is x. The shipping cost for two rolls will still be x. But, the shipping cost after that is the number of rolls times x (3 rolls will cost 3x in shipping, 4 rolls will cost 4x, etc.) I'm sure this changes once you get to single pallet quantities, but I've never ordered that much filament at once because I'm just me with only 1 printer.

    Its not really free for much of the world. Its more like a discount on a larger order because at 30$ shipping for one spool its not free. Its only worth it if you already participate in the community.
    The only way a spool can be free for me is if I put double the effort to be able to get two spools for 30$ shipping. This results on double the effort for 1 free spool.

    so you make them 10k$ in advertisement revenue in this process and you get 24$ of filament after 3 to 4 months of effort seems like a crappy deal to me.
    they are basically paying you less than a waitress to be their unhired sales and marketing department. i would be different if you could have a way to earn at least 1 spool a month but the amount of points needed vs amount you can gain in a month means your basically working as a salesmen for their company for little to nothing

    It seems like a good idea at first but if you don't have access to compatible printers, have the time to do these hundreds of thousands of challenges, have access to modeling hardware/software or the skill and knowledge to make something that can get enough likes for filament. It's basically Twitch for 3D printing it's going to reward the talented and everyone else is kinda screwed and then finding out there's the "if people like or can even find your print" this has *A LOT* of work to do lmao I'm very disappointed especially coming from Josef.

      The entire point here is not to hand out free filament to the masses, that is expensive though it would be very generous. No, the entire point is to build a community on printables with the incentive of expensive filament to the people most likely to contribute regularly. It's essentially an advertising expense that directly contributes to the process you're advertising. It's pretty smart if you ask me.

      @@eldiablo3124 You don't have to do any of the stuff you listed...you just upload "makes" of other peoples' prints. It's dead simple, and many of us do it anyway to give users pictures of example prints and share how it worked out for us, any tips we have, etc. It also doesn't take anywhere near "hundreds of thousands of challenges", it's 10 points just to upload a make, and a spool costs 350 points. 35 makes is not a lot, plus they give tons of points for extra stuff like filling out your profile, giving them suggestions of features on the next i3, etc. I'm surprised so many people have complaints about this, you don't get a thing for uploading to Thingiverse, and the Printables search feature works better anyway.

    prusa filement is generally considered great filament, but overpriced. you can get similar qualities of filament from filamentum, RedLine, Jessie, Overture, Hatchbox, PolyAlchemy, Inland, Atomic Filament, Fusion Filaent, 3dxtech, Dasfilament, Formfutura, Fiberlogy and Spectrum. Some are more expensive than others, and vary by regional availability.
    It's also not 'free' if you have to do a lot of WORK for it. Making models, printing, advertising them, that is all promotional gains for prusa- and work from you. If it takes you more than 2 hours to do - it isn't even worth the wages you would have had working a typical job instead.
    This honestly is all 'pyramidy' cult like of 'use our system only, our economy, our printables' - and the point of thingiverse being crowded is only going to make Prusa crowded when everyone imports their models over! This doesn't solve anything and is screaming "rewards points" systems to keep you invested in THEIR product, over anything else.
    Uploading images, doing models, adding models from thingiverse to their site instead - that is actually hours of work. You glance over this - and I think your just sunk cost fallacy on this one, your too far in to realize how much effort your actually putting in, to earn this "free" filament.
    Your also talking 3+ months of effort, waiting, and work - for a single spool of filament. Again.. 2 hours at minimum wage can typically get you a roll of great quality filament, doesn't require additional steps, and doesn't require insane quotas or upload images and do all the work prusa should be PAYING you to do.

      You’re right, but I usually enjoy uploading and reviewing prints anyways, and participating in the community. So if I do that on Printables instead of Thingiverse? It’s not extra work. It literally is free filament for doing what I would do anyways. But I hear you. I charge $150-500 an hour for consulting depending on the topic, so this isn’t strictly speaking a good use of my time unless it’s something I do because I enjoy it.
