Awesome video brother! Love your energy, and your passion to teaching. I'm a Louisiana-Creole, and I've always had a passion for learning Domincan Spanish 🇩🇴 (I have always been drawn to the Domincan Republic and their Spainish dialect.)
My dad recieved his DNA ancestry test the other day, and we just found out together that my dad have DEEP Dominican roots!!! Along with other Hispanic roots such as Afro-Cuban 🇨🇺 Garifuna-Honduras, 🇭🇳 Dominican-Spainish, 🇩🇴
    Colombia Afro/Native 🇨🇴
    And Luscophone-Latino Brazil Afro🇧🇷.
You're are right about Latino parents being strict. My Louisiana-Creole are Framco-Latinos 🇫🇷 and as a kid my siblings and I would have to kneel on our knees on RICE! They don't play that 😆.
I don't know about claiming Dominican though. I've only identified as Black, Creole and Native my entire life. It'll feel a little weird telling people that I'm Domincan.
    Keep up the good work!

You’re Louisiana Creole, nice. Do you actually consider yourself to be Latino? I’m only asking because I’m Haitian 🇭🇹 and wonder what other French/Creole speaking nations or people consider themselves. I don’t necessarily consider myself to be Latino/Hispanic, though I’m Haitian.

    • @ninpobudo3876
      @ninpobudo3876 4 года назад +4

@@FLYKIDD320 Yes! Louisiana-Creoles are Franco-Latinos 🇫🇷 along with Haitians (some Haitians consider themselves but MANY DON'T) Guadalope, St. Lucia, Dominca, Martinique even French-Canadians. Some Louisiana-Creoles are Hispanic-Latinos 🇪🇸 and Italiphone-Latinos 🇮🇹.
I work with PHD historians. Anyone born into the Americas of colinal Latin culture are Latinos which also includes; France, Portugal Italy, Romiania and Spain. However, this excludes the Latin from Europe. Because America is a predominantly Anglophone (English) culture (dispute not having a offical language in America on the federal level) tend to try to loop us Creoles,Cajuns into Anglo/English (Black or White) category doesn't fit into our culture!
The Americas include everything from north, central, south America and the Caribbean. That's why I laugh at the dictionary when they exclude North America as Latino while native Latino cultures still exist in Louisiana and various other states. America and Canada, are North America, but parts of the Caribbean is also north America too... Which is Latino! America have huge population of Franco-Latino 🇫🇷 descendent people in the U.S!
Many of the Franco (White) people in America wouldn't want to identify as Latino just think... they would drop down in the cast system and lose "their White privileges!" People think of Latino as "mixed race" (many are but this isn't absolute) and so called "Whites" don't wannabe mixed/or admit admit it, and remain "pure" ;) .
      I've digressed a bit. and I apologize. But yes my good sir, you're Franco Latino 🇫🇷 no doubt! Unfortunately, when people think of the term Latino they tend to only think of Spanish-Latino (or Hispanophone.) Latino is limited to the Americas and comprised of ANY LATIN derived culture! You're Latino but not Hispanic. You're Franco-Latino you be exact. Here's how it's broken down;
Franco-Latino (Francophone) French 🇫🇷 *Haiti and other Franco cultures*
Luscophone-Latinos Portugal 🇵🇹 (Brazil and some Aruba communties.) This excludes Cape Verde because they're not apart of the Americas. They're considered LatinX
Hispanic-Latino Spain 🇪🇸 (D.R, Cuba, Mexico and others.)
Italiphone-Latinos Italy 🇮🇹 (some communities in Argentina and Venezuela)
Romaniaphone-Latinos Romania 🇷🇴 (no communties in the Americas that I know of)

Ninpo Budo I see, you’ve reiterated everything I’ve thought! There’s just a big cultural stigma, specifically in Haiti, in which they’ve denied and exuded themselves from the term Latino. Though we share an island/parts of culture with DR, we don’t quite see ourselves as their “equal”. This is a deep conversation that should actually be spoken of more. I know in DR, they tend to be anti African/Black and deny any and everything African, about themselves! Haiti does the same, but instead of denying Africa we deny France. There was a huge War between us and France (the Haitian Revolution) that explains this. Which I’m sure you know. Long story short- we’ve later on colonized DR as Spanish Haiti and that lead them to despise us and all African culture.
I know I’m technically labeled as Latino, geographically. Some even go as far as calling me Hispanic or “Spanish” (NY slang for Spanish speaking/cultured people). Which is extremely interesting to me and my name doesn’t make it any easier to say that I’m not. The history of our island, Hispaniola is intriguing none the less.
Dacord, ou met pasé yon bon nuit fré’m nan!

Not quite sure what to say. I love Spanish, its rhythm, its musicality, clear precise vowels, the way people speak it, etc. How has learning it and other languages affected me in general? I would say they have taught me to have patience, be disciplined, steady as it goes in my language studies. I've obviously opened up. When I'm out and hear a foreign language it's like music to my ears and I immediately become interested in the people speaking; I'll even venture to speak with complete strangers more than I would if I did not speak Spanish. I think I've become a better listener because I believe listening is underrated in language learning. Learning Spanish has helped me to be more analytical in comparing it to my native tongue English and other languages. I'd say I definitely have more empathy for others learning Spanish/ languages. I think I'm probably more encouraging of others learning Spanish and I'm very inspired by non native speakers who speak it very well. I could say a lot more but I'll end with I think learning Spanish / languages in general has helped me to deal better with uncertainty. I don't know all the vocabulary in my language so how am I going to know it in Spanish or another language. I would say learning Spanish / languages has made me much more adventurous and really improved my knowledge of geography and history. Really, I love Spanish and other languages and to think I started learning them at 24 when before that I had never wanted to learn or shown any particular interest in language learning. Oh, and how can I forget, learning Spanish/languages has done great things for my confidence. I can communicate with people in Spanish and I think I'm a more flexible person. Not everyone who tries to learn Spanish does. I seem to be descent at learning languages but I'm terrible in Math and can't tune my guitar. Such is life. Note, I taught English to people who did not speak English for about 20 years. I've said it before and I'll say it again, learning languages and travel have probably changed my life way more than most things.

    •  4 года назад +2

Wow muy profundo and interesante. I think it's awesome what learning languages can do to people. I wanna travel more and learn more languages and have my mind opened even more.

@ No reason in the world why you can’t do it Ricko, especially a man with your ability, personality and drive. Some major moments in my life, 1st, while backpacking through Europe and Central Asia (late 70s) I was surrounded by polyglots. Decided then and there I wanted to learn a language. I returned to the States and started Studying French at age 24 with a French woman. The reason, I knew that some day I wanted to visit French speaking Africa and the Caribbean. 2nd, a woman in Madrid where I first started teaching English with no previous experience told me: “If you want to take this English teaching seriously and be in a better position to compete for the better jobs, you might want to get a Masters degree in TESOL / ESL or at least a certificate. I returned home from Spain to do just that. Got a fee and tuition waver (every year) at the University of Illinois to work on the degree because I was a teaching assistant teaching English at the University’s English Institute. Third, After receiving the Masters I was going to go back to Spain but I got an offer to teach in Saudi Arabia which I took. I’ve Lived 11 months in Iran, 3 years in France, 2 years in Spain, 2 years in Brazil and 15 years in Saudi Arabia and of course traveled to many other countries. I taught English everywhere except in France. I Speak and read French, Spanish, and Portuguese well and can do ok in Italian and I can definitely see progress with German.
Have a particular skill, considering Teaching English for Specific Purposes.
Presently, I’m studying Italian and German- got tired of the Romance language bag. My greatest failure, not learning Arabic- that’s a very long story, but I can understand some spoken and written Arabic. Every week my language schedule is: Sundays: French and German, Tuesdays: German and Portuguese, Wednesdays: Spanish and German, Thursdays: French and Spanish, Fridays: Portuguese and Italian and Saturdays: Spanish and German. What does that mean? It means that on any given language’s day I try to at least speak, listen to and / or read that language. I’m just starting to try to recover from not writing them so I’m lacking in that area. Come on, if you can learn one Romance language you have a great chance of learning another. My dream would be to speak a non western language. I do most of my language study on RUclips ( for free though I use many other sources and materials, some paid. Lately I’ve been watching lots of videos of impressive young Americans who speak Fluent Chinese. Now THAT is humbling and impressive to me not unlike like the 33 year old American I worked with in Saudi who spoke fluent Arabic and Chinese; some people just have a gift and I think Ricky does. There are lots of polyglots on RUclips explaining how they’ve done it. If I can get German I’ll be happy. Why it has a masculine, feminine AND neuter is beyond me. Languages are my passion. Whatever your passion is, go for it. Finally, in most places I’ve lived I lived well especially compared to many natives. Working in Saudi really helped me to travel a lot, save money and see a very different culture. Just last week I met a brother on line who’s a jazz musician from New York. He got a certificate in ESL and is now in China teaching English. It can be done. Lastly, I’d say if you love people, adventure, travel, languages, cultures consider teaching English. The world wants to learn it. You won’t make great money but you can in some parts of the world. I must say that more black representation in the field of language teaching would be great. In my 20 some years in teaching English I have met very few blacks doing it. The field needs more of us. Sorry to take up so much of your time. Tried to keep things short, but ………..Check this out. A 72 yr old friend of mine had always wanted to travel. She retired, sold her house, car and hit the road for 2 years with a friend: Caribbean, Thailand, Australia, Viet Nam, etc. Now, you can’t get her to stay in one spot. Every time I turn around she’s off to Mexico and is FINALLY taking an intensive Spanish class. Better late than never. Have a great life.
Oh yeah, I'm 65. That first flight to Amsterdam with my backpack 1977, Saudi 1991 to 2006. Still hope to do a lot more traveling, and now I'm back in my home town of Flint, Michigan where you shouldn't drink the water.

Rico, this is the last response I'll have for you on this video of yours. I'm sending it because you seem like a man with drive and an entrepreneurial spirit. I know you do lots of videos and you sale T-shirts and maybe other things. Have you thought of starting your own language school and
getting paid for it? I'm following a couple of German teachers online who started out doing free videos online for learning German and now they work for themselves and have their own companies / methodology, etc. I found this woman Anja by accident. Listen to her story. Now she works for herself
travels the world teaching German. In fact, she has a whole set of videos where she's traveling the world doing just that. It can be done. Just an idea. Basta, no more from me on this. Hope I haven't been bugging you. Just click on her in the middle where she's waving. No harm in getting paid for what one loves to do. Also see the videos fo her traveling the world because of her teaching German. She's a very good teacher too, lots of energy. I find you such a go getter and with damn good Spanish so this is for you for inspiring me. Just some things to consider. Lots of people want to learn German, but a lot more want to learn English and English is easier- I think. Don't worry, I don't understand a lot of what she says either but the 'visual' helps and she does put some things in English. I promise, no more on this.

I wonder if the personality switch has to do with the way the brain absorbs a language, through immersion, and the type of people/environments you immerse yourself in with a given language.

I love it! 😂 Ive just started to learn Spanish, my mothers cousin married a Mexican and we‘re very close to that part of the family so I finally had a reason to stop procrastinating learning Spanish. Unfortunately they dont live anywhere close to where I‘m going to uni so I cant exploit them to help me with my spanish (ie by speaking to me in spanish). Ive found the so called natural approach to learning any language a few weeks ago and am trying to build my spanish foundation on the comprehensible input I get from animated spanish children stories on yt 😄 Got any advice? I really enjoy your videos btw and I LOVE your accent!

    •  4 года назад +3

Hola! Good luck with your studies!! And just call your cousin a little more so that you can chat with her spouse lol.
I think your approach is awesome. Just make sure that you are being proactive and applying what you learn to make sure that it is ingrained in your head. I started out by just listening to stuff even though I had no clue what was being said but it got better with time.
Thanks for your support!!! Don't forget to share the videos that you find helpful!

You brought up how knowing Spanish has made, you want to be more romantic. That’s the reason that I’ve always been in love with Spanish-speaking culture, even before I started learning Spanish in high school. (turning 17 at the end of the month) it’s always sounded so sweet and so loving. Not to mention I’m so attracted to the Spanish language as a whole 💙🥰 🇬🇧💙🇵🇷🇩🇴🇲🇽🇨🇺

Espanol is a language of passion and expression. This language demands such in order for it to be spoken properly. This is what you all are experiencing when you utilizing it's expression as opposed to what I'm understanding to be your English native tongue.

They said that I stood straighter and that I looked at people like I was solving a math problem. I had no idea, and I wanted to learn more but they had a flight to catch and I never saw them again. As I learn Spanish, it’ll be interesting to see if I get another personality.

    Hi Bilingual Guy,
    1) to me when you are speaking English I hear American English, when you are speaking Spanish I hear Spanish from South America. I am not that good at Spanish to be able to differentiate the accents from Mexico, Dominicana, Colombia, Argentina etc. I only hear that this is not the European Spanish accent which I had the contact with the most often. (I am from Europe.) So to me all the Spanish accents you do are amazing. It's not that easy to catch all the accents.
    2) There is a theory in psychology that after learning a foreign language you a kind of gain another personality. And this personality is switched on when you use the language belonging to it. Now my question is (English is my second language, Spanish is my third language): after learning so much of Spanish can you admit that your personality has changed or rather that sth what was always inside you became revealed after catching a new language? From my experience I can say that I have always had Latin Spanish culture in my heart but I just haven't known that for a long long time. Probably because I was born in Central Europe, haha. :-)
    3) great content!
