This is one aspect of language learning that is very, very underrated and overlooked within discussions. The idea that one can *choose* their accent by being a learner is awesome and a privilege, as we are able to do so without coming off as disingenuous (ie. A native pretending to have a diff. accent). We're painting the canvas as we go by... and how beautiful is that.

I’m from the south and I guess when my southern drawl and the spanish mix it sounds very caribbean because the cadence came very naturally. When I first spoke spanish to my mexican friend she taught I was a legit cuban or a cuban from miami lol. I’m definitely practicing the cuban accent and puerto rican accent. 🤎👏🏽 i love those two a lot. caribbean spanish just has that flavor 🔥
Usually people say that the Southern drawl makes people speak slower. Was that your experience with Caribbean Spanish at all, especially since its usually spoken faster?

Dang I'm part cuban and from Tx, wanted to get a cuban accent to be down with my fam but apparently I still just sound Mexican 😂 (with the exception of a few words). All the people I can speak with here are Mexican though so it's not a big deal
@@jaminwaite3867 Haha when I speak spanish it’s really fast, I have a whole alter ego that’s the thing. 😂 I do find that my native english is more relaxed but not necessarily slower. For me personally, it’s the fact that I already knew how to slur and chop words to get a point across. So it just reflected across languages. I remember when I was first learning spanish I was immediately inclined to cut the “s” off words to make them softer. And at the time I was listening to a lot of different spanish accents but I guess the Caribbean stuck out. I hope this helped

It's all a journey, so learn at your own pace. It's possible to learn both at once. Its the same grammar for the most part its just different vocabulary in some instances.
I'm an American & I lived in Spain (Andalusia) for a couple of years but I like the DR or PR accent better. Your channel keeps me motivated!

The Caribbean spanish accents derive from Andalucia and las islas canarias so makes since that you may lean more towards those. Sigue pa' lante and thanks for being a part of the Bilingue Blogs team.
I've been trying to learn the PR accent, and i have the accent a little bit, but it's definitely not as native as the hispanohablantes. I'm trying to work hard on getting the deep PR accent. I'm listening to PR radio stations, listening to reggaeton, reading books in Spanish, watching PR youtubers, and just trying to find more resources that might be able to help me on learning the PR accent.
I grew up speaking Mexican Spanish but when I was 27 I was given the opportunity to travel to Colombia where I quickly adopted not only much of their slang and vernacular, but also the bogotano accent. I did it by doing essentially what you did, simply by paying attention to how everyone around me spoke and asking questions when I couldn’t figure it out on my own. Now I find myself code switching a lot between Mexican, Colombian, and even a bit of Caribbean accents.
My grandfather is from Honduras, so I used to want to learn the Honduran accent. Mine ended up more of a mix of Mexican and Colombian.

Thats awesome. I had a Honduran student two years ago. She was learning that accent too. I like some of the words that I learned while working with her.
I just wanna say I'm so proud of you dude myself I'm mixed born in Brasil but my father is Dominican it is beautiful that there's people like interested in Dominican spanish i grew up mostly in brasil but lived in Dominican Republic for about 5 years to learn Spanish and now i speak it fluently specially Dominican Spanish being immerse in both cultures is interesting to see how similar dominicans have evolved so have brasilian português but is really commendable what you do keep up the good work you look very Dominican by the way I'm pretty sure you get that alot.😆😆😆

QUE?! Pero tu suenas como un puro Dominicano!!!! Felicidades en tu éxito! Naturally I'm Dominican and speak like my country-people do. I can code switch on a dime as I also need to speak neutral Spanish at my workplace. I appreciate how you elevate our dialect since to most of the Spanish speaking world, ours is considered a guttural derivation of the language. But the way I see it, language is living and constantly evolving and we've taken the colonizer's tongue and made it all our own.
My accent leans toward Mexican, but I try to speak with the most "correct" phrases as possible since I'm a teacher (mostly elementary students). You have a very good point that one needs to learn some basics, and then "choose" an accent/dialect to focus on. I love learning the different accents/dialects by meeting new people and the content I watch. I always love watching your videos.
African American, Spanish speaker with Dominican accent here as well! In the beginning I learned conversational Spanish in RD, but when I came back to the U.S. I didn’t have Spanish speaking friends. I just loved the language and kept striving alone along with taking Spanish classes. Years later now, when I speak como dominicana mi esposo dominicano siempre dice que hablo como campesina 🙄🤣 I’ve almost mastered the ability to turn it on and off just like speaking slang here in the U.S. as well, but as you distinguish between Dominican Spanish from other countries I’ve realized that I speak with their accent or use their vocabulary without even realizing it’s straight up Dominican. Ay mi madrecita..🥴

I'm Argentinian but when I was a child my family moved to Italy and made me stop speaking Spanish because "it'll be confusing while learning a new language at school" Well now I'm 18 and I can speak Spanish but I lost my accent and I absolutely hate it! I really feel like something is missing in me

As a current student working towards a language certificate in Spanish, the curriculums lean heavily on Spain Spanish, so I ensure to engulf myself into the various cultures to ensure I can hear something other than that one specific accent.

I applaud you for that. Idk why schools do that, but with Spanish being the 2nd most spoken language in the world, it's super important it's so important to take in different content. Sigue asi!
Dominican seems like country Spanish lol. I'm from the South and my cousins up north couldn't always understand us when they would come visit. We cut off the ends of our words and have different sayings for things. I like that you liked that it was challenge and took it on! Instead of dismissing it as bad.
This is great advice. There used to be a Dominican restaurant in my city. It recently became a Puerto Rican restaurant but I’ve learned a few phrases by just going ordering food and listening to people come in and talk while I’m waiting. I haven’t gotten the courage to talk or order my food in Spanish yet lol one day

Todavía no sé que hacer con mi acento. Naturalmente ya tengo un poco del flow del Caribe pero siempre me ha gustado México y la cultura allá. Pero de verdad, no pienso que quiero escoger un acento particular (al menos en este momento). Solamente sé mucha yerga mexicana pero no tengo el acento. Y con sus videos he aprendido mucha yerga caribeña, especialmente dominicana (claro lol). Tengo la “habilidad” de asimilarme facilmente a las cosas como los modismos y los sonidos cuales cambian mi acento-especialmente cuando tengo una profesora de español (soy una estudiante universitaria) diferente cada semestre con sus propias maneras de hablar. Empiezo a hablar como ellas o al menos usar sus modismos. El toquecito caribeño se solidificó después de vi la serie “Celia” tres veces 🙇🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️ durante el verano porque me encantaba-los actores tratan de hablar como cubanos pero los dos protagonistas son 100% puertorriqueños (como han dicho los cubanos que criticaban sus acentos 😂). Con todo eso, empecé el semestre con un acento casi nuevo en mis clases de español 😩🤷🏾♀️. Al menos no sueno como una gringa todo el tiempo como mis compañeras de clase 👀👀🤷🏾♀️ y ellas lo saben😂🤭.

My entire family speaks Spanish but my mom never bothered teaching me. I spent a lot of time with my family growing up so the Puerto Rican dialect and accent feels very natural, however my Mexican friends have a hard time understanding me sometimes.

Do people from other countries have trouble understanding you when you speak with a dominican accent, and if so, do you then switch to your neutral accent? I'd be pretty taken aback if I was having trouble talking to someone with a strong Scottish accent and then they just straight up switched to a standard american accent.
No. The accent never causes trouble. If anything it'd be the slang which I mostly use with Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans who are more likely to know my slang. If its someone else i may opt for the latin american spanish term but still use my dominican accent.
Most of the time is not the accent but the words he might use. I’m Dominican myself and when I speak Spanish with someone let’s say Mexico, I try to use words that are somewhat neutral and mean the same for us. Us Caribbeans tend to shorten words a LOT so I try not to do it with non Dominican people lol
No Allen, just like @Chick-O-Stick said, it's not the accent but the words, because at the end of the day Spanish is just Spanish. Every language has its structure and its sounds, so the brain expects to hear the particular sounds of its language. So no, you don't have to switch to a neutral Spanish, just change the regional words.
I tried to learn the cuban accent as soon I started. I found it difficult so I'm delaying that until i get to two years of learning. I'm about 16 months in now.
Yes I know right Cubañol is hard but I keep myself motivated with the music especially genres like Timba and Cubaton. If you haven’t already exposed yourself to these genres feel free, definitely helps a lot. ☺️💯💗✨

My accent changes so much depending on who i am talking with often very much unconsciously. When i was learning Spanish, i had professors from Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba and Spain. Then when i started working, I worked with Central Americans and Dominicans and my accent changed again! Now I work with Peruvians and Chileans. Guess what happened again?
And don’t forget there’s definitely not a lot of books and info on Cuban Spanish or Cubañol. It saddens me that people kinda just overlook their dialect due to the islands conditions. I grew a deep affinity for Cuban Spanish after my interests in Puerto Rican Spanish due to reggaeton and then Colombian Spanish due to (no not narcos and Pablo Escobar 🙄) hard salsa or salsa duro and salsa caleña. When I stumbled upon Son and found out how it shaped what salsa is today I just fell in love with their culture. So much to love, Timba, cubaton, rueda etc I could go on and on. La cultural de Cuba es muy rica! I know you’re Dominican Spanish all the way but since you’re in Miami could you shed a lil more light on some Cuban material. I mean that city is considered Lil Cuba being the closest thing to the island literally and figuratively. Muchas Gracias mi hermano 💯💗😎

Right when covid hit, I was going to little Havana in Miami to record cuban spanish content because I see the lack of educational content out there. Everything closed and now I have to wait, but when things open up, ill have content for you for sure!

Bueno, yo tengo un español que está mezclado de to y por eso me confundo tanto jaja. Crecía en Texas y aquí hay muchos mexicanos, salvadoreños y guatemaltecos. Después estudié español en la universidad y tuve profesores de España, y quizás Mexico/Colombia/Venezuela. Ahora no me acuerdo. Y después estudié en Cuba cuatro meses y me encantó! Salí hablando un poco como ellos pero nunca escuché ese acento de nuevo. Después viví en la República Dominicana dos años en el Cibao y ya tú sabes que eso es un español completamente diferente. Y aparte de eso, yo estaba hablando la mayoría del tiempo con inmigrantes de Haití que tienen su propio acento en español. Ahora estoy en Texas de nuevo y tengo un novio con familia de Costa Rica y El Salvador. Digo todo esto para decir, ni sé cuál debo aprender. Me gusta algo de todos. También me gustaría hablar más caribeño, pero ahora trabajo en traducir y interactuar con oficiales del gobierno y líderes de organizaciones de otro países así que quiero que tenga un español bien formal. Vamos a ver qué pasa pero creo que, por ahora, ser neutral sería lo más fácil 😅
I’m a part-time Spanish teacher for elementary school students that stay after their regular classes . I talk in neutral Spanish with them so they’re able to learn proper Spanish. Outside of class, however, I speak with a Caribbean accent. It’s a mix of Puerto Rican and Dominican (I know jerga de ambas islas). I was looking to tweak my accent so that it sounds Puerto Rican in general. Reason #1: I grew up around many Puerto Ricans and Mexicans, not so much with Dominicans. Reason #2: I find it slightly easier to understand Puerto Rican Spanish. Reason #3: I have some Puerto Rican (along with Spanish-Mexican) ancestry. I find both dialects cool af though.
I know that Caribbean Spanish has that seasoning, just like English speaking Caribbean when we speak patois/creole. That's why I want it! I don't want to be unseasoned. lol I need that sazon! I would love to learn Cuban style Dominican would be a close second.

La verdad es que quiero aprender del acento castellano. Es la idioma original. Además, me gusta la manera usan las lenguas a pronunciar el "z" y "ce". Miro programas de España en Netflix. Programas como Vis a Vis, la Casa de papel y ahora mismo "high Seas". Que piensas del método Ricky?

Wow, I really didn’t realise that there is neutral Spanish and different varieties 🙈 I’m from the U.K. so I’m mainly learning European and what I thought was simply ‘Latin American’ Spanish.. Soy Dominicana. Admiro su pasión por aprender el idioma y su amor a la cultura latinoamericana. He visto varios videos y aparentemente soy la única que se dio cuenta de su acento americano? Para aclarar, es sutil. Muy parecido a mi cuñada. No creo que tenga nada de malo. Vivo en USA. Y nunca me ha importado mucho el asunto del acento, mas que la compresión y el no verme como una persona de poca educación. Tenga cuidado de solo concentrarse en hablar "slang de calle", pero eso solo mi opinion, usted decida. A esa forma de hablar le dan mucho aire y dudo que nadie consiga un trabajo diciendo: K LO K MAMI, DAME MI TRABAJO DE GERENTE GENERAL "SNAPS". Si quiere realmente sumergirse en la cultura, le recomiendo que investigue más (hay muchos canales aqui) y no se limita a un dialecto y a un grupo económico, social. Yo hice lo mismo con su país.

I've been trying to learn the PR accent, and i have the accent a little bit, but it's definitely not as native as the hispanohablantes. I'm trying to work hard on getting the deep PR accent. I'm listening to PR radio stations, listening to reggaeton, reading books in Spanish, watching PR youtubers, and just trying to find more resources that might be able to help me on learning the PR accent.
I grew up speaking Mexican Spanish but when I was 27 I was given the opportunity to travel to Colombia where I quickly adopted not only much of their slang and vernacular, but also the bogotano accent. I did it by doing essentially what you did, simply by paying attention to how everyone around me spoke and asking questions when I couldn’t figure it out on my own. Now I find myself code switching a lot between Mexican, Colombian, and even a bit of Caribbean accents.
My grandfather is from Honduras, so I used to want to learn the Honduran accent. Mine ended up more of a mix of Mexican and Colombian.
Thats awesome. I had a Honduran student two years ago. She was learning that accent too. I like some of the words that I learned while working with her.
I have the same situation. I consume mostly Dominican and Puerto Rican Spanish so my accent has derived from those.

I just wanna say I'm so proud of you dude myself I'm mixed born in Brasil but my father is Dominican it is beautiful that there's people like interested in Dominican spanish i grew up mostly in brasil but lived in Dominican Republic for about 5 years to learn Spanish and now i speak it fluently specially Dominican Spanish being immerse in both cultures is interesting to see how similar dominicans have evolved so have brasilian português but is really commendable what you do keep up the good work you look very Dominican by the way I'm pretty sure you get that alot.😆😆😆

I can code switch on a dime as I also need to speak neutral Spanish at my workplace. I appreciate how you elevate our dialect since to most of the Spanish speaking world, ours is considered a guttural derivation of the language. But the way I see it, language is living and constantly evolving and we've taken the colonizer's tongue and made it all our own.
My accent leans toward Mexican, but I try to speak with the most "correct" phrases as possible since I'm a teacher (mostly elementary students). You have a very good point that one needs to learn some basics, and then "choose" an accent/dialect to focus on. I love learning the different accents/dialects by meeting new people and the content I watch. I always love watching your videos.
African American, Spanish speaker with Dominican accent here as well! In the beginning I learned conversational Spanish in RD, but when I came back to the U.S. I didn’t have Spanish speaking friends. I just loved the language and kept striving alone along with taking Spanish classes. Years later now, when I speak como dominicana mi esposo dominicano siempre dice que hablo como campesina 🙄🤣 I’ve almost mastered the ability to turn it on and off just like speaking slang here in the U.S. as well, but as you distinguish between Dominican Spanish from other countries I’ve realized that I speak with their accent or use their vocabulary without even realizing it’s straight up Dominican. Ay mi madrecita..🥴

As a current student working towards a language certificate in Spanish, the curriculums lean heavily on Spain Spanish, so I ensure to engulf myself into the various cultures to ensure I can hear something other than that one specific accent.
I applaud you for that. Idk why schools do that, but with Spanish being the 2nd most spoken language in the world, it's super important it's so important to take in different content. Sigue asi!

Dominican seems like country Spanish lol. I'm from the South and my cousins up north couldn't always understand us when they would come visit. We cut off the ends of our words and have different sayings for things. I like that you liked that it was challenge and took it on! Instead of dismissing it as bad.

This is great advice. There used to be a Dominican restaurant in my city. It recently became a Puerto Rican restaurant but I’ve learned a few phrases by just going ordering food and listening to people come in and talk while I’m waiting. I haven’t gotten the courage to talk or order my food in Spanish yet lol one day

Todavía no sé que hacer con mi acento. Naturalmente ya tengo un poco del flow del Caribe pero siempre me ha gustado México y la cultura allá. Pero de verdad, no pienso que quiero escoger un acento particular (al menos en este momento). Solamente sé mucha yerga mexicana pero no tengo el acento. Y con sus videos he aprendido mucha yerga caribeña, especialmente dominicana (claro lol).
Tengo la “habilidad” de asimilarme facilmente a las cosas como los modismos y los sonidos cuales cambian mi acento-especialmente cuando tengo una profesora de español (soy una estudiante universitaria) diferente cada semestre con sus propias maneras de hablar. Empiezo a hablar como ellas o al menos usar sus modismos.
El toquecito caribeño se solidificó después de vi la serie “Celia” tres veces 🙇🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️ durante el verano porque me encantaba-los actores tratan de hablar como cubanos pero los dos protagonistas son 100% puertorriqueños (como han dicho los cubanos que criticaban sus acentos 😂). Con todo eso, empecé el semestre con un acento casi nuevo en mis clases de español 😩🤷🏾♀️. Al menos no sueno como una gringa todo el tiempo como mis compañeras de clase 👀👀🤷🏾♀️ y ellas lo saben😂🤭.

My entire family speaks Spanish but my mom never bothered teaching me. I spent a lot of time with my family growing up so the Puerto Rican dialect and accent feels very natural, however my Mexican friends have a hard time understanding me sometimes.

Do people from other countries have trouble understanding you when you speak with a dominican accent, and if so, do you then switch to your neutral accent? I'd be pretty taken aback if I was having trouble talking to someone with a strong Scottish accent and then they just straight up switched to a standard american accent.

No. The accent never causes trouble. If anything it'd be the slang which I mostly use with Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans who are more likely to know my slang. If its someone else i may opt for the latin american spanish term but still use my dominican accent.
Most of the time is not the accent but the words he might use. I’m Dominican myself and when I speak Spanish with someone let’s say Mexico, I try to use words that are somewhat neutral and mean the same for us. Us Caribbeans tend to shorten words a LOT so I try not to do it with non Dominican people lol
No Allen, just like @Chick-O-Stick said, it's not the accent but the words, because at the end of the day Spanish is just Spanish. Every language has its structure and its sounds, so the brain expects to hear the particular sounds of its language.
So no, you don't have to switch to a neutral Spanish, just change the regional words.

My accent changes so much depending on who i am talking with often very much unconsciously. When i was learning Spanish, i had professors from Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba and Spain. Then when i started working, I worked with Central Americans and Dominicans and my accent changed again! Now I work with Peruvians and Chileans. Guess what happened again?

And don’t forget there’s definitely not a lot of books and info on Cuban Spanish or Cubañol. It saddens me that people kinda just overlook their dialect due to the islands conditions. I grew a deep affinity for Cuban Spanish after my interests in Puerto Rican Spanish due to reggaeton and then Colombian Spanish due to (no not narcos and Pablo Escobar 🙄) hard salsa or salsa duro and salsa caleña. When I stumbled upon Son and found out how it shaped what salsa is today I just fell in love with their culture. So much to love, Timba, cubaton, rueda etc I could go on and on. La cultural de Cuba es muy rica! I know you’re Dominican Spanish all the way but since you’re in Miami could you shed a lil more light on some Cuban material. I mean that city is considered Lil Cuba being the closest thing to the island literally and figuratively. Muchas Gracias mi hermano 💯💗😎

Bueno, yo tengo un español que está mezclado de to y por eso me confundo tanto jaja. Crecía en Texas y aquí hay muchos mexicanos, salvadoreños y guatemaltecos. Después estudié español en la universidad y tuve profesores de España, y quizás Mexico/Colombia/Venezuela. Ahora no me acuerdo. Y después estudié en Cuba cuatro meses y me encantó! Salí hablando un poco como ellos pero nunca escuché ese acento de nuevo. Después viví en la República Dominicana dos años en el Cibao y ya tú sabes que eso es un español completamente diferente. Y aparte de eso, yo estaba hablando la mayoría del tiempo con inmigrantes de Haití que tienen su propio acento en español. Ahora estoy en Texas de nuevo y tengo un novio con familia de Costa Rica y El Salvador. Digo todo esto para decir, ni sé cuál debo aprender. Me gusta algo de todos. También me gustaría hablar más caribeño, pero ahora trabajo en traducir y interactuar con oficiales del gobierno y líderes de organizaciones de otro países así que quiero que tenga un español bien formal. Vamos a ver qué pasa pero creo que, por ahora, ser neutral sería lo más fácil 😅
I’m a part-time Spanish teacher for elementary school students that stay after their regular classes . I talk in neutral Spanish with them so they’re able to learn proper Spanish. Outside of class, however, I speak with a Caribbean accent. It’s a mix of Puerto Rican and Dominican (I know jerga de ambas islas). I was looking to tweak my accent so that it sounds Puerto Rican in general. Reason #1: I grew up around many Puerto Ricans and Mexicans, not so much with Dominicans. Reason #2: I find it slightly easier to understand Puerto Rican Spanish. Reason #3: I have some Puerto Rican (along with Spanish-Mexican) ancestry. I find both dialects cool af though.

Para aclarar, es sutil. Muy parecido a mi cuñada. No creo que tenga nada de malo. Vivo en USA. Y nunca me ha importado mucho el asunto del acento, mas que la compresión y el no verme como una persona de poca educación. Tenga cuidado de solo concentrarse en hablar "slang de calle", pero eso solo mi opinion, usted decida. A esa forma de hablar le dan mucho aire y dudo que nadie consiga un trabajo diciendo: K LO K MAMI, DAME MI TRABAJO DE GERENTE GENERAL "SNAPS". Si quiere realmente sumergirse en la cultura, le recomiendo que investigue más (hay muchos canales aqui) y no se limita a un dialecto y a un grupo económico, social. Yo hice lo mismo con su país.
