island mama.. it's that way no matter which island you're on.. until you piss them off.. On Guam they were the nicest people, but if someone's kid was out of line, didn't matter if they were 6 months old or 60 years old, if you're out of line they are going to treat you just like their kid and you best be running because a flip flop, fly swatter, wooden spoon or palm frond is going to be coming after you quickly. In a way, it reminds me a lot of Native Americans.. it's the whole "it takes a village" mentality. They may be dirt poor but they are going to share whatever they have with literally everyone and everyone takes care of each other.

In Guam, we call it “Ayuyu” (coconut crab). We usually would purge the ayuyu before eating it. Basically putting it in a cage for a week feeding it coconuts and water. To clean out their system. Love seeing people experience the island life even if it’s just for a brief time.
@@shelwee yes they don’t just eat coconuts, they also feed on anything including animals or rotting flesh. If you don’t purge the coconut crab for a few days, their intestinal trac (it’s located in the abdomen that Taku was eating with the buttery flavor) can contain toxins which can give you bad diarrhea. But it’s likely these crabs were feeding on just coconuts. Experienced islanders have the ability to remove the intestine without tainting the delicious crab roe/butter which is by far the most delicious part!!
@@shelwee Coconut crabs eat many things, including stuffs that are poisonous to human. In some regions, they feed on sea mangos, which are extremely poisonous and thus making themselves poisonous as well. So yes it's definitely recommended to purge them before processing. Moreover, their stomachs tend to have bad smell because of the dirty food they have eaten before. Purging will clean their stomachs to remove bad smell. You can also feed them with coconut or aromatic plants to further enhance the taste.
In Indonesia, this creature is protected because it is often consumed and illegal hunting on several islands in Indonesia is threatened with extinction
Yeah I saw a video of a guy who went to an island where there were so many of them but he was saying that he couldn’t eat them ,i thought at that time coconut crab wasn’t edible now I know why he couldn’t eat any
Didn’t know you Jocelyn were visiting the Rock, Taku. Enjoy the hospitality there, you will love it! If you’ve already left, hope your adventures opens up more tourism for Niue! 👍🏾
Taku does a great job dealing with the natural elements and making the most of every situation. He doesn't worry about the bugs or let the heat bother his mission to enjoy every moment.
Im from the islands currently living in Washington State. And I tell all my friends out here that coconut crab is the best tasting crab and ill put money on that!
So pleased to see you doing this! I went hunting for them, along with a Niuean friend guiding, but, at night! Niue is wonderful! The crabs are magnificent. Not many non-islanders get this chance.
Sitting outside on the waterfront with a beautiful ocean view at sundown as you eat the most heavenly food...what a dream. Only thing missing is a fireplace and the Superbowl on a large screen TV.
I love all Taku Jocylen adventures, and I really love the voice and general demeanor of their guide Lava. And, these things look extra terrestrial. Never knew about Niue. What a wonderful world.
I had Coconut Crab for the first time on Tinian Island back in 1981. What a treat it was. So glad you gat the chance to enjoy one. Enjoy the rest of your trip.
That looked delicious Taku... thank you very much. Niue is my mother's birthday place, so that was extra cool and it looked like you stayed at "Lau's Getaway", which is my mother's cousin, Nice!
You would need a large aquarium with some unique landscaping, and lots of coconuts im actually surprised they haven’t become popular in the pet trade, like other marine species.
I am fascinated with people catching and cooking coconut crabs!! I understood that some regions prohibit their capture, and some only allowed locals the privilege. So, though I check a few times a year, there have been few new videos that show this. Glad I came back around to get caught up on your channel and was rewarded with this unexpected venture. It's like the cherry on top of your already very neat and extremely cool videos,🤌. Now, I just wait to see if you are going to eat the infamous long curly entrails.
The coconut crab is also a delicacy where I come from. Thoroughly clean and cooked with fresh coconut milk is one of the ways we cook it. Delicious! Very expensive. For a fully mature coconut crab, it will go for $40, to $50 apiece. You have to go deep into the jungle where they are cliff lines to find them. You bait them with coconut so that they can come out of the crevices of the cliff. They will tear the coconut to shreds to reach the meat of the coconut inside. The roe is perfect with hot rice. #ENJOY!

The coconut crab is so good I used to have it at a relatives house it's very flavorful we used too cook it in coconut milk with fresh turmeric and the tips of local pumpkins love this video and love seeing some coconut crabs.
In Samoa we have bigger ones twice as big as a chihuahua. When they go under the rock or a hole. We use dried coconut leaves and dried small sticks to start a fire at the mouth of the hole. The smoke will drive it outside you just gotta be ready to grab it when it comes out. Believe it or not those crabs can move pretty fast. The big ones use their strong arms to husk the coconut then they climb a tree and drop the coconut so it can crack on a rock. The super huge ones and grind the coconut with their massive pincers and crack them open.
I've eaten most other crabs from land and water but none compares to the aroma and taste of coconut crab meat as well as the creamy part of it. So I agree with you Taku and I have always believed coconut crab is the best of the best!
