The GR (both Gen 1 & 2) are in completely different leagues to the Golf. In fact, I'd say they are both so far apart that the GR is in an entirely different universe. Both great cars but the GR is better in every sense other than practicality.

      Practicality,quality...Golf is far better car

    • @andy9665
      @andy9665 День назад +7

You literally just repeated my point about practicality, so thanks for that. But ‘quality’? That’s where your argument collapses.
Toyota’s reliability and build quality are legendary-VW, on the other hand, is infamous for electrical gremlins, DSG issues, and cheap interior touchpoints masked by soft plastics. The GR Yaris isn’t just better built; it’s engineered with a purpose. Bespoke chassis, forged carbon roof, rally-bred AWD, and a precision-tuned suspension
The GR Yaris is the closest thing to a supercar in an affordable package. The GR is lighter, sharper, and infinitely more fun. It was built to attack country roads, dance through corners, and dominate in the wet with its rally-derived AWD-Wider track (almost as wide as a GT3 lol) superior suspension, and razor-sharp steering make the GR a weapon, while the Golf feels numb and heavy. On track? The GR is a missile; the Golf is a snail.
And let’s be real-the GR looks aggressive, purpose-built, and unique. The Golf? Just another rounded VW blob blending into traffic. The GR isn’t just better-it’s in an entirely different league. The Golf R? It’s a fast, mass-produced MQB-platform hatchback with a Haldex AWD system that’s front-wheel-drive most of the time. It’s a refined daily driver, but dynamically, it’s not even in the same conversation. One is a scalpel, the other a butter knife. Enjoy your Golf R’s cupholders

I am lucky enough to run both cars. GR is more fun, has vastly superior handling, faster down the twisties and always leaves you smiling every drive. Golf is more accelerative, faster on sweeping roads, motorways, and is by far most comfy and grown up cruiser. You can still chuck it around, but with nothing like the ease and fun of the GR.
Both great cars of there time. There won’t be any more like it.

The video quality for a large british outlet is absolutely next level. The sound is atrocious and the black five seconds where "camera lost signal and editor just couldn't give a f_ck" was totally a brilliant place to... place a nice drive-by sequence in.. But luckily, the editor just couldn't be bothered to give a f_ck. Either way - both cars are probably pretty brilliant - the tiny Yaris has the same amount of driven wheels and roughly horsepower (less torque though) as my 530 diesel xdrive - but half (HALF) the number of cylinders. The Golf, on the other hand, has more of everything - including space - but less appeal, mostly thanks to VW (WHY??) going away from the brilliant ergonomically perfect interior controls of the Gen 7 Golf - to the idiocy (did I already ask -- WHY????) of the touch controls that seems to be one of the top-three misinformed and mis-judged decisions - in the automotive sector - ever - and that coming from the People's Car brand with the Sitze... seat.. Main office in Wolfsburg... with tons of autobahns on its doorstep. WHY?

Everyone bangs on about how expensive it is as a Gen2 but if you put the 33,500 price it was on launch into an inflation calculator it comes out I a few pence over 41,761, so the new model is in fact about 500 quid more expensive like for like and nothing like as cheeky as Porsche and other German manufacturers have raised their prices!!

@ you’re correct, I had a deposit down for the gen 2 (didn’t get one unfortunately) and it was 42,250 at that time I did that hence my comment. I still don’t think Toyota have priced to high just think people’s price perception hasn’t caught up with the inflation of the last few years which has not been helped by wage stagnation of over a decade for the majority of people.
I know I am lucky to be able to afford them although I was only allowed to put down the deposit on the gen2 if I gave my missis my current one as she absolutely loves driving it

I had a BMW135ix with 4wd and active suspension - felt quick on open roads, but steering meh. Just not very engaging. Now have Gen 2 GR. Auto, mainly used for weekend mountain runs. Its so rapid on these narrow roads with loads of corners, brakes can stand on really late and hold up well. The steering feels much sharper with better feedback than most recent cars Ive owned or driven. The gearbox is rapid, usually drive it with the paddles. Even as an auto it’s not the best daily, as poor economy by standards and noisy - but used as its meant to be driven, theres little else to compare it to. Feels more motorsport than the usual hot hatch.

A bargain if compared to the RZ version that starts at 4.48 million yen and the RZ High Performance, listed at 5.33 million yen.

Sold my GRY CP, which i owned from new, and can honestly say it was fun but was surprised at some of the cars on the road that could leave it for dead or sit up my backside on B roads. This probably also explains why so many are for sale considering the small volume made. They are fun but I believe very hyped. And don't get me started on the short service intervals or sugar glass windscreen. And theyre awful for carrying rear passengers plus the passenger seat has no height adjuster on the mk1 versions. If you run onre of these cars daily forget it being an investment. The parts and servicing will eat away at any return you may, or may not, get when selling the car in the future.
Glad i got that out of my system. I did enjoy driving it as im sure many do and will. But after 3 years of ownership i don't miss it one bit.

That’s maybe more about your driving style by the sounds. GR thrives on being taken by scruff of neck pushing your liberties. I have and R, a GR and a 991.2cs. I live in Devon and can unequivocally say that, on a give and take road, like those on Dartmoor exmoor , the Gr will easily spank the others without me being a rally pro driver. Encouraging, communicative, forgiving, small n wieldy. I never go 10/10ths, and woukd dare in the Porsche, but the Yaris is so good I can go further to edge of cars lintits whilst maintaining my own. Had many decent cars, and am fortunate. But the GR takes some besting on Uk roads most days.

@@andy9665 you're living in a dream world. Out of the box, new and for £33500 on the road they had no competition for the price. But that is different from saying nothing will stay with it on a B road. I'm also an experienced driver, and that's putting it politely, having driven the car and others to their limit and beyond off road.
There are many modified road sleepers and track day set up cars on the road that will stay with a GRY on twisty roads and then leave it for dead once the bends smooth out, especially if the conditions are dry. I love the GRY. It's a petrol heads car. But i'm also very honest and well aware of what else is out there. The GRY is the perfect balance of stability and useable power. But that's it.

You’re talking about track built cars and “road sleepers” how often did you come across these types of cars on country roads?? And if you want to go down that route, my GR is 350bhp with basic bolt ons and weighs 1240kg. There’s very few cars, modified or not, that keep up with mine.
