  • Join me in my latest video as I take on the relentless invasion of creeping thistles, also known as Canada thistles, in my field. 🌾 These stubborn weeds have proven to be a formidable adversary, with their ability to regrow from broken roots and lay dormant seeds that can resurface years later.
    In my pursuit of a thistle-free landscape, I've documented my step-by-step process of using Thistle-X, a targeted herbicide designed specifically to combat thistles while preserving other plants. Having previously tried alternatives like Thrust, I'm excited to see the potential of Thistle-X to bring about a more effective solution.
    Equipped with a knapsack sprayer for precision and a towable boom sprayer for broader coverage, I'm taking every measure to ensure these thistles meet their match. 🚜💧
    The battle against thistles is crucial as their thousands of seeds can rapidly overtake the area, jeopardizing the health of my field. By patiently observing the effects over the next month, I'll be able to showcase the true impact of Thistle-X, tracking how it penetrates deep into the roots to disrupt the growth process.

    You were correct sir. "Cut thistles in May, they grow in a day, Cut them in June,
    that is too soon, Cut them in July, then they die!"

    I've used glyphosate regularly in my last garden. It works a treat on literally everything. It does biodegrade quite quickly and, I believe you are right about the wide spread use of it in commercial farming. Pretty much all non-organic fields are glyphosated to kill everything before being seeded. Without it, there would be a global famine.

      It is visually slower in the killing of the weeds. Expect to wait 5 to 10 days for visible results. Don’t be disheartened - everything will die 😅A month later, you will have no weeds (or other plant life). @@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT

    They'll be back mate. I've had similar issues on a smaller scale and I had to dig them out before they flowered. It took a couple of years with a covering of black polythene after clearing. The bigger problem is unless the surrounding areas do the same, the seeds will be windborne and vacation on your property. Maybe a couple of pet goats would be a better solution.

      Hopefully I've dealt with the majority. I've just spotted my neighbour has a patch of thousands of seeds ready for deployment 😂 ffs. I think them goats might be a good shout, but I also really want to get 3 pigs and build them 3 houses 😁

    Hello mate just to see any update on the creeping Thistle ? I have the same problem , thinking I’m going to ask the local Farmer for next year to do a few treatments finally get rid of it and be done then maintain myself . So frustrating isn’t it .

      I just cut across the field today after taking Arthur for a walk and there's still some about. No where near as much as before. If you count how many there are in a 5mx7m area then each thistle represents 1% weed infestation apparently. So I had 100% 😂 the thistlex claims it is 85% effective and I'd say so far that's accurate. I'm going to spray the field again within the next week to get the last of them (you're only supposed to do one spray a year with this stuff but I've had enough 😂)

    My uncle always added a squirt of washing up liquid to roundup to help it stick to the leaves. All these chemicals are a worry though. Hope you get the weeds under control and you can use less toxic chemicals.
    I can see you with a few pigs. 👍

    Amitrol might be your next bet. Not sure if it’s legal in UK (I’m in NZ). Works a treat on bamboo, killing the root network. Definitely not to be used without maximum caution/protection as per ThistleX (which sounds similar to Amitrol)? Good luck 🤞

      Looks like that stuff got banned here years ago 😬 I can see thistlex going the same way, all cause of groundwater contamination 😑 I'm hoping what I've done has broke its back and maybe some animals next year will help 🐐🐖

    Use glyphosate. Give it a month. Plough the field. Sow grass. Fertilise well & regularly to get the grass to outgrow the weeds. A healthy, vigorously growing crop is the best weed killer.

    2 Pigs will do the job for you, It will take them about a year to clear your plot and they would keep going back over the land using there snouts to get the roots too. The bonus is after 2 years you will have a clean plot to seed and you can munch on the pigs lovely jubbly !!!

      I kept a few meters away from the borehole and as it didn't rain for ages afterwards I think any chemicals not absorbed by the plants would have evaporated off. It's not ideal, I know. We have been drinking bottled water since and will probably have it serviced and the water lab checked soon to see if there are actually any issues.

    Good luck with that mate, agree with your neighbour, spray the sh1t out of it and kill the whole lot off..... then start over.... get the farmer next door to do his bit too! The battle can be won, we had a 3 year battle with bind weed in a 50m long hedge.... finally got rid of it by repeatedly weakening it with roundup, then exposed some roots at 2-3m intervals and put the roots directly into shotglasses of neat roundup - within a fortnight the bastard stuff was gone for good!

    That looks like mission impossible. I wonder if a cheaper option might be a controlled burn and then plough? Or a guaranteed kill method is denial of light i.e. tarping over the area. You just need a thousand tarps! lol Or you could do it section by section possibly. Spraying that stuff in that quantity in your own backyard is not ideal.

    • @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
      @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT  Год назад

      I should have done a better job at that 👍 so the top half of the field will be our garden and it's difficult to enjoy your garden when it has 100% coverage of spikey weeds. The thawns get stuck in our dogs paws so he cannot use the garden also. It is also illegal to let thistles spread

    • @Obbliteration
      @Obbliteration Год назад

      @@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT ah sure. If its a garden. I seemed unreasonable to weed a whole field. How is it illegal if it is impossible to stop?

    • @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
      @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT  Год назад

      @@Obbliteration I suppose if you let it get out of control then you're being irresponsible so you can face prosecution and get a conviction and fined 🙈 off the top of my head there's about 9 species that come under the weeds act. Ragwort is one of the worse ones as it can kill livestock, but that's easy to get rid off as you can just pull them up by hand. I assume thistle is in there as it's so invasive and difficult to deal with.

  • @DiHandley

    You really should be using a surfactant with the spray. Thistles tend to have a waxy surface and the surfactant will ensure that the herbicide gets it.

    Why do you need to get rid of them though?

    • @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
      @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT  Год назад +2

      Well it's effectively our back garden and it's covered in thistle. Technically it's 100% coverage as there is so much. That means we can't use it and neither can Arthur cause the thawns stick in his paws. Also thistle is listed as injurious under the weeds act 1959. Which means by law I need to keep it under control and if I let it spread to neighbouring land I could face penalties and even conviction 😬
