I wish I was in my thirties! I agree, sharpening the axe is hard for a full time Pastor, especially as your brain is constantly storing information for the next sermon, or the next, next sermon, and it takes an effort to just learn things for yourself. I often study sections of the Bible or topics that purposefully, have nothing to do with any of my sermon prep, Bible Study, or small group lessons.

Excellent. “To be anti-intellectual is to be anti-God.”

Like C.S. Lewis said “ You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me “

Great video! Very helpful! I’m looking forward to your next video! I am studying through J. C. Ryle’s works. I’ve read most of his twice, but I just got in some works yesterday that I haven’t had, so I’m super excited to get into that! (I don’t agree with him on everything, of course, but his works are just phenomenal.)

The Just Thinking Podcast does a deep dive (and I mean DEEP) into current issues from a biblical POV. It's fantastic biblical content.

Thanks for the video Matt. I think it is quite relevant for U.S. context. Coming from poor Global south and looking at my current situation and how irrelevant some of this information is (conference, seminary,....)

“Machen’s first letter home about the incident confirmed the newspaper report. What the students wanted were more courses in English Bible and practical theology. Machen considered this compelling evidence of anti-intellectualism. The students “want to be pumped full of material which, without any real assimilation or any intellectual work of any kind, they can pump out again upon their unfortunate congregations.”
D.G. Hart’s, Defending the Faith: J. Gresham Machen and the Crisis of Conservative Protestantism in Modern America (Phillipsburg: P&R Publishing Comapny), 28.

Great points pastor Matt. Myself I have taken up the study of Greek and only a month in and already can see how important it is .
Just doing on my own but I do have great resources.
On thing you touched on has me really interested. Is the issue of anger . I believe you could do a whole series on that . It touches on so manny areas of life , from our religious beliefs or that car that cuts us off to bad service at McDonald’s. Just a idea .
    Blessings

Amen 🙏 just how the word bondservant means slave most of the time but it has been made more palatable for our culture in most translations because slave has such an awful history in our country unfortunately 😢. But the word slave in the NT has such a robust theological meaning! How we are slaves of Christ purchased by him, to do his will. He cares for his slaves he loves them and even calls them friends for slaves do not know their masters will but only friends. So we are dually slaves and friends. It’s so wonderful the Love of God that He has purchased us and called us friends.
Also yessss anger would be such a good topic to study as it relates to every area of life. Would love to see it.

Would love you to do a video on Sabbaticals, particularly on the practicalities. How long? How not to waste it? What were you glad you did during yours? Any regrets? Also, would you see a difference between a Sabbatical and eg writing leave if you had a book to complete?
