LOVE learning Scottish Presbyterian history - something that doesn't get talked about it enough. Keep releasing these bangers, pastor Matt!
Thanks my man!!
Every time I hear American Presbyterians speak about the Covenanters with such high esteem, I can not help but think of Matthew 23:29-33.
@@Project1643. Rm 16:17. Be careful about how you speak of brothers in Christ, trying to cause division is not a sign of christian character.
@@danielbernardesfalcao2648 Thank you for your sage advice. I did follow this biblical command years ago. As a member of the PCA for a short time I realized that the PCA, and the other American Presbyterian denominations, had caused divisions and offences contrary to biblical doctrine which the Covenanters died for. Therefore I have marked them and avoid them. But I will sometimes take the opportunity to warn others of their hypocrisy. Let me now encourage you to take your own advice and avoid these men also.
Thank you so much for this thorough explanation of the Covenanters. May we all be so faithful as them.
I see a matt everhard video and I watch and like.
I love this stuff. Thanks brother!
it's important to remember that Oliver Cromwell violated the solemn league and Covenant and propagated congregationalism alongside John Owen and wasn't entirely sympathetic to English Presbyterianism. As such that's why the Presbyterians in England foolishly believed Charles II was going to help them establish Presbyterianism in England and paved the way for his return.
A most beautiful presentation.
Ryan Reeves has 3 great playlists of lectures on church history
At 27:02 -- the drones Wigtown Martyrs. "Elderly" Margaret McLauchlin and 18 year old Margaret Willson. Margaret Willson was my wife's 10x great aunt. My wife is descended from Margaret's then-16 year old brother, Thomas Willson. She is also related to the Willson professors at RPTS in the past. As in the guys for whom Willson Hall on the north side of Penn Ave. is named.
Excellent!!
Just on the regulative principle, it seems that even the moderate Church of Scotland disciplined Dr Ritchie around 1808 for using an organ to accompany the final Psalm at one evening worship service. Most Presbyterian Churches in Scotland held in practice to the regulative principle until around 1860. All of them still hold to the basis of the regulative principle contained in the 21st chapter of the WCF, some still practise that confessed doctrine,
Is this gonna be the start of the history of the Presbyterians series? I’d love to see that
Thank you for your instruction
Given the importance of an established church, can you see why I care so much about having strong mainline churches?
Note that it was a thriving, reformed, orthodox church that achieved establishment in the first place because of the work of the Holy Spirit in the heart of their lesser (and sometimes higher) magistrates through the "foolishness of preaching". Worship and doctrine were primary, and God moved in an extraordinary way during the reformation. Also, the later decline and division in Scottish mainline churches (1843 and 1900) came about through the same declines in doctrine that have come in our own American Presbyterianism...some of which I think you're on board with, based on your comments over time. You've come this far by God's grace, but there's more work to be done (and He will bring it to completion). Please take this in the way that I intend it, as someone who has a longer Christian background (taught by my parents "from a child" like Timothy) but feels his weakness: "Not a novice" is a leadership qualification for a reason. Your youth isn't a big deal, but the recency of your conversion puts you in the "studying/learning/sitting under good preaching" category. I love your zeal, but I want it to be well-directed. May the Lord bless you.
@@CharlieGr "declines in doctrine that have come in our own American Presbyterianism...some of which I think you're on board with, based on your comments over time" Which doctrines are you referring too?
I’m just shocked you didn’t point out the fact that Pastor Everhard said the Westminster Confession replaced the Scots Confession 😂
13:10 “Cameronians” are more-so a schismatic offshoot of the Covenanters who took things too far and stayed out of the Church of Scotland in 1689. Thomas Boston was a Covenanter who preached a sermon against their schism in 1708 (vol. 7 of his Works). Alexander Shields also argued against them, there’s a great article in the Confessional Presbyterian Journal 14 (2018) about this.
The Revolution Church was established in an Erastian fashion. Boston was wrong here -- one of his *few* times.
@@philpockras4408maybe so, but we can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. I think Alexander Shields and James Durham’s writings on church unity are much more faithful to Scripture than the lamentable actions and writings of the Cameronians. Although I have great respect for their zeal, it wasn’t tempered with wisdom or charity.
The Cameronians were not a schismatic offshoot, they did not change their position. It was those who engaged in the Revolution Settlement Church who changed and accepted a church structure, and other compromises in that settlement, including former persecutors of the Covenanters into office in the church. I would reccomend having a look at one of the Historical Testimonies of the Reformed Presbyterian of Scotland (available online) usually an early 20th century one - there is a whole chapter explaining why the Covenanters remained outside the Settlement Church and how subsequent history proved them correct to do so. The Church of Scotland was far from a Covenanted Church under the settlement.
This was excellent to learn about.
Thanks Pastor Matt! This was great!
The documentary “The Essential Church” put out by John MacArthur led me to look into reading on The Covenanters”. Very interesting and convicting. Thanks for keeping them before us!
My apologies, I forgot to thank you for this video. I am preparing talks on Scottish Presbyterian history and this is video is very helpful.
Amazing job on this video! Super helpful
So good- I recently purchased and am reading the book you recommended on the Covenanters.
Also I highly recommend Hold Fast the Faith to anyone who wants a devotional approach to the WCF!
Great video, Pastor Matt. I bought Fair Sunshine after your recommendation and I'm about 1/3 of the way through it. I'm really enjoying and being encouraged learning about the Covenanters.
excellent Vid.
Fantastic video. Have you ever been through the covenanter collection at Geneva College? Also, Lex Rex is an awesome book that everyone should read.
Well, now I would like to get that flag.
I want one too!!
Are you willing to do another Diego Caloca Bible Review your last was 6 six ago and im looking for more recent stuff. Thanks!
With this info, what does Christ expect us to do?
I think they are absolutely correct.,although more offensive than opc church.
D
Sadly, Scotland has become a basket case. We need the covenanter spirit back here.
Great video. That's our great grandfather's. Knox preached in the pulpit in the neighbouring village of Mid Calder in West Lothian. Been a church on that site since 1150 AD Has an amazing history. The Kirk at Kirknewton is also impressive and my local kirk in East Calder we also have a Roman Catholic Chapel and a, ruined Church of ST CUTHBERT built 1148. Cheers 😊👍, WE ARE THE PEOPLE
