Welcome to the official RUclips channel of Nikol Johnson!💄
My Channel is about empowering women to show up, be BOLD, FIERCE, and Unapologetic. I talk a lot about this in my book Beauty Reinvented, available through Amazon! It's not just about going gray young it's about a powerful movement for women breaking out and having NO BEAUTY RULES.
➡️ None of what I show on this channel is what “mainstream” RUclips makeup tutorials will show you. Instead of telling you to put loads of makeup on (that makes you look like a different person), I want to show you how to “reveal” the beauty that you already have and teach you how to look GREAT- while still looking like YOURSELF.
As the years go by, many women feel that their beauty and radiance go by too. I don’t believe this. I believe you can stay beautiful, confident, and feel wonderful even if you’re past 40, 70, 80, or 100 years of age.
➡️ No matter your background or your age, my goal is to help you on your journey. Whether through make-up/skin-care tutorials, product reviews, or health/wellness advice. I want to empower (and teach) women to show up, be BOLD, FIERCE, and unapologetic.
Are you ready to embrace your authentic self- and start making YOUR OWN BEAUTY RULES? Subscribe to my channel NOW! 🔔

At 71 I finally have ripped jeans 😂. As I always dressed like a fashion model when I was younger, it's impossible for me to find the well made, lined jackets, slacks or anything! I used to be able to thrift shop & grab the best quality I could find. Also, there were beautiful stores to shop at. Everything has gone by the wayside. So, I'm embracing my authenticity & wearing my ripped jeans! I dress for me, not to please others. I got them from EBAY & paid very little. I never pay retail. My Mother was Scottish & taught me the art of shopping & quality over quantity💖
Yes! Love this!
Have u shopped Rue lala?
@@kcloveonaleash
No I have not! Thank You for the heads up!
We should wear what we feel good in at any age. I’m in my 50’s, and still rocking my ripped jeans, and I have a cousin in her 70’s doing the same, and looking amazing 😊
@@hugsandkriss7959 👏💖
I personally love mine and at my ripe old age of 61 I plan on keeping mine for family picnics and outings but again the beauty of aging is that I truly don’t care what people think of me. I’ve earned that at my age ♥️♥️
Totally agree..I love my ripped jeans..always get lots of compliments
Nikol, I want to thank you for your kindness and for reminding us “more mature women” that we are beautiful at any age. Over the years….I have only worn designer clothing and shoes. Now at 64… I am finding it more difficult to find designer clothing that is appropriate for my age. Everything this season is showing the waist or cut way too low. This video had a great impact on me to accept myself at 64 and to celebrate it with joy.
Thank you, Nikol ❤
60. Not ditching any jeans based on anything except how I feel in them!!
Love this! Gave away 3 pairs of ripped out jeans just last yr( Sept) at 69🙄😟😂. Yes, my foot would get stuck and rip them even more! But heck , just lost 18 lbs so I'm buying all new everything slowly! Classic jeans- light and dark wash, boot cut and skinny. Hello size 4 @ 70yrs old🎉🎉
Interesting video…..I think where I am is not so much the size of my clothing but my age. I have not come to terms yet with being 62. I know I should be grateful but aging but not being so cute anymore has hit me really hard. This video is great food for thought. Thank you Nikol!
I love my distressed skinny jeans. I buy all my clothes from thrift shops.
Thank you for being here !
When I have difficulty giving up a piece of clothing, my mantra is, "let someone else enjoy it." There are so many people in need. You'll make someone very happy!
All good advice Nikol, thanks. I need to give myself permission to get rid of things. As for ripped jeans, I don’t think they look good on anyone, regardless of age.
Ditto
Omg Nikol -I am the one who looks at the size tags and I don't know why - if I see something that is XL and it looks good on, I won't buy it because I am normally not an XL. I really do need to change my mindset. I did do a closet clean out recently and had about 15 pairs of jeans that I had purchased and kept over the last 2 years ( pre Covid) and I have put on a few pounds since but hung on to them convincing myself I will fit into them one day. I got rid of them and now shopping for ones that fit - I am learning to let go of looking at the sizes! Thanks for the reminder 😊💕
I am 65 and don’t get the look of ripped jeans at all. I don’t judge others if they wear them, but I’m of the age where when I go shopping for clothing, I check the piece over and over again to make sure it is in perfect condition before I’ll pay for it!🤣🤣
hey! I'm 65 too and I had ONE PAIR of ripped jeans that I wore until I was 50ish... now I would never. lol.
Same here. Never will understand the attraction of paying a fortune for torn up clothing.
@@maureenneans757 My thoughts exactly.
I agree. Why pay for torn clothing and looking like a homeless person?
Nikol, you nailed it. This video hit home for many of us. I'm 70yrs and going through my closets. I'm finally comfortable with my body and have bought close that are flattering for my age.
You need to write another book for this next stage in life .....what do you think?
❤❤❤
I went into a big box store a few years ago. I was looking for a pair of jeans. I couldn't find any that weren't ripped. I didn't want to spend my money on jeans that were torn. Heck I could have just taken the worn jeans at home at ripped them myself and save $75 to$100. I never liked them, and never thought they did anything for an older woman.
I recently cleared out half of my closet, including shoes. I lost 50 lbs and had to buy new clothes. I kept holding to the old thinking, "What if I gain weight?" Donated 10 bags. I feel good. Still have some as well as lot's of sneakers. That's next. 😊
Can you share your secret?
I lost a lot of weight too... keeping 'fat' clothes sort of permits you to put on weight again, so toss them!! I admit, occasionally I put on weight again and have to buy a couple of bigger items, then I give myself a kick and get the kgs off again, and I do get rid of the bigger clothes so I don't let myself get lazy again....
💖💖💖💯‼Truth! I stopped caring about number size years ago. I'm into great fit and fabric drape and quality. Thank you for your awesome content!
I wore faded, distressed flared jeans today, cuz they fit me and I like flare. I prefer a dark wash, hard to find right fit, wash and cut. And you are so right, when are bodies change I believe we need fabrics that have weight to them, you can only get that from quality brands IMO. Less is more, and you always get what you pay for. Thanks for your perspective on makeup, hair, fashion and life, appreciate you and your videos. Glad I found you on RUclips.
I was super skinny through out my life. Long skinny legs, my fav outfit was jean short shorts and a t shirt! Now that I'm old, had to ditch the jean short shorts: exchanged them for longer jean shorts! Jeans at the knee, summer is still casual and fun, but more age appropriate!
Agree wholeheartedly. I wore ripped jeans in my younger years. They were a statement of rebellion, anti-establishment, finding my own way. NOW, I know who I am. I have found my way. I make my own clothing style now and it feels so good.
Every time I make a closet dump, I regret it. Not doing it unless I HATE the item. Nope ! Not dumping my Karl Lagerfeld shoes from the Nineties. NOPE NO WAY
Great video, Nikol! Looking forward to your future videos on capsule wardrobing - I think in the economy we are dealing with today, this strategy is just plain smart! And if I may weigh in on ripped jeans, imo they look sloppy, no matter how old you are.
I’m 55 and still have a couple of pairs of slightly ripped jeans that Im holding on to because they fit me great and look nice. The rips and distressing are minimal and give the jeans a more casual vibe. Crop tops to me are the biggest “NO NO” over 50 but thats my take on the trends. A tip if you don’t like the size of a garment, is to cut the tag off. Problem solved go by the fit and not the tag. 😊
I will be 58 next week and definitely keeping my minimally distressed jeans. I think they are cute 🤷🏻♀️
I am 67 & love my ripped jeans & will not give them up! My mother wore the Alfred Dunner type clothes with elastic wastes & matching pullover tops . The only elastic waste pants I wear are my jeggings ! Dress like you feel ❤
I'm 63 and bought a pair of 'ripped' jeans (1 scuffy rip)... I love them, I feel casual, worn them to casual things with my daughters...👍👍
I agree..big NO to crop-tops...don't want the "mutton dressed as lamb" look!!
Good idea - cut off the tags if you don't like the size on the tag of the garment! My neighbor was a seamstress who worked in the Fashion District in Manhattan. She told me that when pants/jeans are cut to a size, they would be placed on a machine on a tall stack and the machine would be programmed to cut the size requested. She echoed Nikol's advice, try on the pants to see how they fit. Since sizes are machine cut, there could be variations. Who knew? Good luck, ladies!
Crop tops are a no-no on me, lm long waisted and i hate air blowing up into it.
I'm so thrilled that we don't have to ditch the jeans! But yes, I am finding your advice so helpful for clearing out. So guilty of sentiment and someday, maybe. You are the BEST, Nikole! Thank you!
Hi Nikol, it’s so true different seasons in our lives different jobs required different styles. I have several St John outfits that I haven’t worn in a while and need to let go. Plus dresses for special events that I only wore once , and will not wear again. Since I love my clothing try to find a place to sell or donate and know who will get them will love them as much as I did. Same with high heals shoes . Thanks always for great content.
I’m in the process of weight loss under my doc’s supervision, after a long term illness. I have the same white Oxford shirt (tailored) from size 8-18… a couple have tags on them still. Most are classic pieces. So no I haven’t done any pruning. I will probably land in the middle… if I needed to find an outfit, I truly don’t know what I would choose. This is a great topic! I am hopeful I land at a healthy weight and can donate the rest!
I still wear my ripped jeans at 65… but if I’m public, I try to find a pair without rips 😁💁♀️. But I live on a small island, extremely casual culture here, and I have a horse ranch. Context matters? 🤷🏼♀️.
But the weight thing is tricky… after years holding on to my “skinny” clothes, I finally ditched them a few years’ ago. Then I figured out how to lose weight again, and now I regret tossing them 😳.
I do struggle getting rid of winter clothes, because I have a deep-seated “well, if the zombie apocalypse happens, I’m going to need all those old fleeces” or whatever 🧟
*Fit and Thrifting* . When I was going through menopause, I experienced major weight gain (25lbs) on my 5'2 frame, mainly belly fat. I had been a solid size 8 prior. 2.5 year in, I was feeling like I would never lose the weight and was destined to a life of baggy clothes that I could hide in. Slowly, through dietary changes, my body shifted again. I lost my butt, my thighs and most of my gut. I purged my closet multiple times during this transition. I reached a place where I wanted to look good/feel good in what I was wearing again. I gained knowledge watching "body-type" and "style-essence" videos. Long story short, I spent a lot of time in thrift stores, finding brands/colors and styles that fit me. When I was fortunate to find a "Unicorn" fit, I bought multiple colors. I'm 55 now, I've found brands/styles that flatter my body. I feel good in my clothes and doing the math, the average piece of clothing cost me $3. I agree on fit, if anyone had told me 5 years ago I'd be wearing size 4 pants, I would have laughed. Reality is, it is possible to re-style yourself at any age, on a budget . #norippedjeans
I lost 85 pounds this year so I was forced to dispose of 80% of my wardrobe and start over. It was refreshing! But - I did buy some slightly ripped jeans. Sorry, they make me feel young and I had never been able to wear them when I was young! :)
You surely deserve it!
Yes I drive a Jeep at 73!! I have fun! So if you love it, do it! I know if are wearing ripped jeans, you are on your way to do something fun!!
Congratulations! Keep wearing what fills you with joy, you certainly deserve it
@@daisyy99 I agree😊
Please don’t apologize for making your own choices. 😊
I recently came to the same conclusion about wearing ripped jeans. I’m a mature woman and I like to dress stylishly. I do wear jeans that fit well with crisp white blouses or a blazer. I am so inspired by your posts. You are a person after my own heart.
"You have to be in the right fframe of mind when you're shopping for jeans"--YES , yes, and yes! True!
I did have a pair of "sacred" great fit jeans, BUT they were that baggy flared bottom, so out came the sewing machine & I pegged them (took the legs in). Yay! Felt like a new pair of jeans with that still great fit! And no money spent.
It is very true that you can get away with a lot of clothes and styles when you are younger. Personally I have never liked ripped jeans, but some women with their vibrant personalities and good bodies ( at any age!) look good in them if they not overly ripped I may add! I love the raw hem look though. To me the key at almost 60 is to find the balance in being fresh and modern without looking like mutton dressed as lamb or looking like a matron or granny! ( Although I am a granny!) Enjoy your content as always Nikol!
I have a pair of distressed jeans that I like to wear casually. Some of my jeans don't fit well but I hate to look for new ones. I really need to do a thorough cleaning of my closet! It just breaks my soul to get rid of things. Definitely something I need to work through
thanks for this inspiration ..... one tiny tidy at a time
I was way ahead of you; I put in a new closet organized system and literally went through every piece of clothing and donated over half of my closet. I love walking into my closet now
Such a good feeling
If you have a slight weight fluctuation problem, keeping different sizes of clothes (one size difference, nothing drastic) makes sense. I just got rid of all my skinny jeans and trousers, and anything that made me feel dowdy.
I definitely agree about ditching ripped jeans. In my case it's easy I never had any in the first place & as for garment sizing it's crazy. Besides no one can see what the label says when you're wearing it so who cares if it's large or small it's the fit that counts.
Wow! This article was written for me. Half of the clothing in my closet is “someday, maybe”. It’s so difficult to find clothes that fit and look decent on me, I tend to hang on to them because…A) the effort required to find them and B) they’re usually a smaller size so if I can get back into them, that’s a win for me!
I got vicious with my wardrobe a couple of years ago..I too a day off..tried everything on....didn't fit, out it went, didn't like how I looked, out it went, couldn't picture wearing it anywhere, out it went, had never worn it and knew I never would, out! had nothing to go with it (I wore it out the next week with a white t-shirt, if I couldn't find something that went well with it, I had 3 items..only found 1 that I could match up to a top, so out the others went)... I had a bed piled with clothes and shoes and a few bags and hats... did a big donation to Salvation Army....had less than half my wardrobe left, but guess what, I then didn't feel guilty to go and buy a couple of new items. Everything in my wardrobe fits now, and things go together, and now I try to buy 1 or 2 things each season, but get rid of 1 or 2 things each year...my robe has filled up again, as you do find a few new items and don't have anything to toss out.... but I'm nearly up to a big clear out again.
I also have held onto certain clothes because of the expense. But I have to tell myself that while it’s taking up space in my small closet, it’s just a decoration that I paid for. My closet has had too much filler. So many clothes, but nothing to wear. Grr.
To be honest I've held on to clothes from far back into the 90's and even older pieces that were my dads and my moms, many of my clothes from back in the day at some point didn't fit but last year I started my weight loss journey and I'm very happy I've held on to them as many are styles that are still relevant today and it feels like I got a brand new free wardrobe 😆
You’re lucky for the hand me downs. Anyone currently over 50 can remember when there was a bit of stigma to hand me downs.
The 90s were the best decade of my life, and I have a few pieces that I’ve kept since then, because they still fit and are durable. It was before the made in China and fast fashion thing, and clothing cost more accordingly back then.
I know that mini skirts and dresses aren’t exactly age appropriate for me anymore, but I wasn’t yet born in the 1960s, and I love much of the fashion from that decade, so I have stuff like the original a line micro minis (bought 2nd hand or sewed myself), but I do wear shiny support pantyhose underneath to make my varicose veins less obvious.
I’ve seen bell bottoms, boot cut and flares the first time in the 70s, then the 90s comeback, and now I see them back in again on today’s young ladies, except now, they also come in some really bright loud floral patterns and stuff that would make the Brady Bunch wardrobe seem tame.
I only wear what flatters me, and that excludes leggings because of the obvious camel toe…I do have a few skirted leggings for exercising.
And at this point of my life, I also feel like dressing out loud while I still can, again, only if it works with my body type and I don’t feel like I’m trying so hard that it’s awkward.
So with the young looking 60s stuff, I’m trying to make up for lost time.
I also love 50s dresses, but I believe they can flatter all ages, and I have had compliments when I’ve worn those.
I’m 57. There is something about the ripped jeans that I like. I guess it’s just a fun, casual, trendy thing that I thought was wearable by everyone. I get your point though and I definitely am seeking a more pulled together look.
I'm in my late 50s too. Now I'm torn, (ha) I never have had a pair and thought maybe I would just once but not too ripped!
I like mine, too.
I just turned 60 and love my ripped jeans!!😂
I love my ripped soft well worn jeans. I feel my best in them. Nothing else, i have, fits and feels as great. Well past 50...
I am in my early 70's, live in a warm weather climate year round and enjoy dressing comfortably. That being said...I think minimally ripped jeans are cute worn with sandals, sneakers and ankle boots. I think having some lovely go to staples are wonderful depending on the occasion. I guess I am old hippy at heart☮️
I stopped wearing "ripped" jeans when I was 58. I just grew out of them, mentally, and style wise. It's all good to be more grown up - not old, certainly!!!!! - but just grown up. "put together" is the best way that you put it! And, I will wear jeans until I'm in the ground. Noone takes away my jeans. I did get rid of about 20% of my closet - if I hadn't worn pieces in 2 years, it was time to go. And, THAT meant I could actually see my closet!! Although, I have to say that I wish to heck that I'd hung on to my leather bomber and the peacoat that I had years ago. Those cost a pretty penny to replace this year and I'm not getting rid of them again!!!!!!
I constantly go thru my closet and always have. Looking back at 68. I only remember 4 items I wish I had kept. Your point is right on for me. My sentimental clothing are 90s silk pieces of my mom's. They are really not even readily available to purchase nowadays. So I hold on to them. And yes I still dream of having a closet like you speak of. You are beautiful. Thank you for all of your videos.
I had a beautiful peacock boiled wool vest that I never wore. I need sleeves when it’s cold. 😂 Gave it to a favorite thrift. 👏🏻
I am 65yrs.old and jeans are a mainstay in my wardrobe. I have a casual, active lifestyle but don't want to wear my "gym" type clothes everywhere ( joggers, leggings,stretchy- type pants) like many of the young women in my life. As in your video, I love to dress jeans up and wear in many different ways. I have one pair of slightly ripped jeans that I wear to concerts, etc.sometimes, but the large Abercrombie rips do not look right on mature women, in my opinion.I am so looking foward to your capsule collection video because I am really starting to rethink my closet. I have alot of clothes and still feel like I dont have anything to wear sometimes. It is wasteful and disconcerting at times. I want to minimalize my wardrobe and unclutter my mind at this age. The one style I am so over are the longer tunic tops especially sharkbite hems and will be getting rid of most of these in my closet. I much prefer a more tailored look and have just refreshed my white button down shirts
I have to agree with you on this one! I do have a couple of pair of ripped jeans and do bumb around in them from time to time. Usually at home or possibly run an errand. I love to promote ladies wearing what makes them feel good... BUT... on this one, it is frumpy.
Such great timing…just looking online this morning for jeans for this year. I’m not sure it can be done online, although I do all my shopping this way. If there is a brand out there anyone LOVED, please let this 60+ woman know! TIA (Thanks in advance)
I got a pair of NYDJ last year on Sale and I love them!
I'm in Canada and for skinnyish jeans I love Lois jeans (the 'Georgia' cut), from Montreal. They are nigh on a hundred bucks but look and fit great and last forever. My 'garden' pair have been going for 3 years after 2 years of 'good' and they are still intact. The company is heavy on the skinnies though.
I do have some Gap not-quite-flares that other ladies have been known to chase me down asking what they are :)
I still love my Levi Straus. I buy my jeans online because I do not like ripped and/or distressed jeans for me, and online seems to be the only place I can find jeans without holes and/or otherwise beat up. 👖
Oh, my goodness! I smiled when you asked if there were any pieces of clothing that I had trouble getting rid of or what I’ve gotten rid of recently. To preface my answer, I left the classroom (teacher) three years ago and wondered “what’s next? “ I kept all those clothes, just because. Didn’t really love them, but they covered my body which kept me from getting arrested for indecent exposure. The following year (over a 7-month period) my father and youngest sister died from cancer, and my husband died very unexpectedly. I am now in what the grief counselor calls the transformation phase. None of the clothes in my closet feel like me anymore. So what have I gotten rid of? Everything except for three pairs of jeans, some crewneck T-shirts in neutral colors, my favorite denim jacket, three button down shirts, and my KC Chiefs sweatshirts! I’m treating myself to a four hour private style analysis next week. Should I already know my style, body shape, etc.? Probably, but do I feel confident with that information? Definitely not. I need to do this for me, and once I have the tools/knowledge, I’m going to grow that curated wardrobe that is effortless, polished, comfortable. I’ll have a wardrobe that reflects the me that I am now. I’m excited for that. 😊 Thank you for your words of encouragement. I’ve come away from every one of your podcasts with something I can apply to my self-care.
You are stunning & style is amazing….however gray short Bob ages you.
@@GLeon-ov9yu What are you 12? Or just rude?
We needed this!! Spring clean perfect timing.
I own one pair of lightly distressed jeans and like them as I feel they are a little edgy! I like to wear them with a black tee shirt and moto jacket but I don't care for the big holes in the jeans. Absolutely, I do a closet clean out almost each season and kind of take inventory on new basics that need to be refreshed. I also finally let go of some shoes with heals that I haven't worn in years and actually felt good to purge. I do have a problem letting go of purses 👛 need to work on that!
First is to make a
Corner of your closet, a place to ditch the unworn once treasured. That was HUGE for me. Second was to immediately put them there when I took them off wishing I hadn’t worn them at all. Lastly was to be honest, bite the bullet w my age, style & preference. I’m thinning out more easily now.
That is a better idea than the cardboard boxes I have on the floor for donation clothes. My clothing is kept in several rooms so these ugly boxes are all over!
Love your tutorials!!! Jeans are awesome, but for a 66 year old "with it" women, ripped jeans don't do it for me. ...actually they never did. Try telling that to your 25 year old daughter. Keep em coming! 😘
Love this video Nikol. For the last 3-4 years I haven’t cared what I look like. I’ve gained weight and was unhappy with my appearance. This year I’m embracing looking good at my current size. I’m also finding my style. This is helping me go through my clothes and donate some. I figure I can look good at my current weight and if I happen to lose weight I can sell my recent purchases and get a smaller size or have my clothes altered. I’m done waiting for someday.
Fantastic!
❤I’m not waiting for someday! So powerful. Thank you Nicole.
Sorry for the misspelling
For me I’ve come to the point where I no longer want to wear skinny or ripped jeans just not me.I do like straight jeans which I’ve just purchased and I love them.I agree with the size it’s seems they are making clothing differently so sizes are not the same so fine what fits and looks great on you. Thank you for this video.😊
Love my ripped jeans at 61!!!!!!
I don’t do ripped jeans. I really do think they don’t have a place in the work place either. Thanks for giving me a boost to get rid of clothes that don’t fit anymore. I don’t want me family to have to deal with them either when the time comes. Thanks for your wisdom. Great wake up call!
This year I got rid of longer cardigans - finally realized they were not in the least flattering on my body shape, and v neck sweaters, for the same reason. V-necks always look masculine on me - unless I wear them over something, and cardigans are just not structured enough for my short, sloping shouldered, shape! I had always thought that v-necks were more flattering for mature women, but finally figured out that didn't include me! This was a very interesting video!
Good reminder that size doesn’t matter. Post menopause I have lost some weight and could lose more but I am not as hard on myself. I no longer feel the need to wear oversized tops. Fitted clothes look best even though my weight isn’t ideal. I buy clothes that emphasize my height and give me structure. So yes, I liberated my closet in November and also last week. 4 large bags of clothes much too big and those too small that made me feel bad. I have some suits from my career days that I am still hanging onto for the blazers, but could ditch the slacks and skirts in favor of other separates.
Hello - just read your comment and it's great. I discovered Melissa's channel which is just awesome www.youtube.com/@mmpersonalstyling

@@lindareinhardt1964 thank you!
Great video. Its all about how you feel and want to express yourself and keep moving forward!
I've been on disability for 10 years but all my work clothes have sat on one side of the closet unused. And today they are scheduled to be gone through. We are working on house to sell so we can move to a free state.
I did go through my closet the other day & donated a large bad of clothes that I had to admit I was not going to wear anymore!! I know I need to go thru more.
Never did care for th😢ripped jeans. Just never really understood it. 😂
Dear Nikol, Wow you are vey powerful, positive and beautiful. You hit the nail on head for me about my ripped jeans. I too laughed when you laughed about putting your foot through the rip and making it bigger. I do it every time! A really good video; got me thinking, yeah time to get rid of "stuff". I have too much "stuff", clothes and shoes. Time to get rid. Love Sue x
I couldn't agree more. I don't even like ripped jeans on 20 year olds.

Joan I would never wear ripped jeans and do not understand why middle aged ladies think they look good in them.
Agreed.
I love your attitude and the content you give us. After having to lose weight for health reasons, I started to feel more like myself than I have in years. I might feel more like myself, but I certainly don't look like the me of 20, 30 or 40 years ago. Finding your channel at this time has given me a real confidence boost, so thank you.
I get rid of anything I put on that I don’t like anymore or doesn’t fit the way I like , I have minimally distressed jeans and they are staying I love them
I never had any ripped jeans so nothing to ditch there. I do love skinny -ish jeans because they fit me better....not skin tight like leggings but definitely more form fitting than regular jeans.....and they just work for my day to day life. Thanks for the encouragement. I do need to get busy on my closet though.
SAME! I've never owned a pair of ripped jeans, but love my skinny-ish jeans for the same reason as you. Bottom line is, we need to feel good in whatever it is we wear.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was already mature when ripped jeans became popular. I never liked them on anyone especially mature woman. I spent too many years making sure I didn’t look like I was dressing from a trash bin to embrace these! IMO when mature women wear them it just looks like they’re trying too hard to hold on to their 20’s.
Hi Nikol this video was great! It gave me a nudge i needed.I am now in my late 50s and have too many clothes of different sizes. I have been going thru closets and bring to consignment & goodwill but need to do more. Thanks 😊
Ok. I have to take the other side of the “purge your clothes when not worn in a year or so” argument. I have saved through the decades many of my designer/boutique clothes, even though I didn’t have a lot a places to wear them since we moved from the coast and began a quieter homey casual life. But last year my husband died and I lost my appetite, thinned down, and surprisingly some of these keep sake clothes fit well and are back in style. And I have begun wearing them out to a variety evening events with my women friends. Everyone gives me compliments. And when I tell them the sweater or jacket or trousers are thirty years old they can’t believe it. Another fun thing is that when my nieces come over they go through my old cocktail (mini) dresses and try them on and borrow them. What a hoot. The thing is, these days you can’t really find these really finely tailored clothes made with exquisite fabrics at an affordable price point, except maybe if you shop in NYC, San Fran, London, etc. Anyway, don’t just toss everything. Save the good stuff, it might be fun to wear or museum worthy some day.
Have been going through my closet and donating items that don’t fit, as well as pieces that no longer suit my style. Just ordered two new pairs of jeans: one straight leg, the other bootcut. Also invested in a nice white button down shirt .
Thanks again for a great video. You look especially radiant today.❤
Wondering where you found your white shirt? I have been looking for so long!
@@janicebelcher2829
I had been looking forever, also.
I ended up getting J Crew’s classic-fit washed cotton shirt and I think it will be perfect for jeans or slacks.
Well made and just the kind of shirt you can get a lot of use out of.
Many shirts I had looked at were too long or too boxy, etc.
@@janicebelcher2829
Also, check Claridge & King.
Their shirts are absolutely beautiful.
I have two of their boyfriend shirts and love them. But they also sell classic, tailored shirts. They’re pricey, but beautiful!
@@TD_427 thank you so much! I've bought a lot of "failures" also. Will give this a try!
Great tutorial. Why is it so hard for us to part with material things??
I'm guilty of it hands down. Going to work on purging to make room for spring and summer. Thanks Nikol!
Thank you thank you thank you! I’ve always felt this was THE worst fad in fashion history. Just so sloppy & dirty looking. More to the point, .WHY??? No one over 18 should wear them. So, hopefully, it’s a trend that is beginning to die out.
Even for younger set, can we please get a bit less “casual”? It feels amazing to dress up a little. Try it kids❣
I think ripped jeans look rather scruffy but my pet hate are the low cut jeans and trousers which Alexander Mc Queen introduced some years ago. The most off putting sight is someone wearing these low cut trousers and revealing more than they ever intended.
I had five pair of very high heel pumps… beautiful Italian made - never worn… I knew I couldn’t walk in shoes that high anymore but for years I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of them. This year I finally did it… I donated them to a charity auction and a lucky woman won all of them for a fraction of the value. It was hard to give them up… but happy it was for a good cause!
The only item I’m keeping that I’m unlikely to wear again is my wedding dress. The sentimental value of it makes it priceless and well worth the wardrobe space for how I smile every time I see it.
Thank You! Thank You! For reminding us that in style doesn't mean trendy. I dislike ripped jeans with a passion. They just look cheap and sloppy. I don't have a huge budget for clothes anymore but I've found that Chico's, at least for me, has jeans that fit women. Think I have 3 pairs of black jeans and I wear them all the time in a variety of styles. So appreciative of you
I look forward to the upcoming wardrobe videos. The past few years I have donated many clothes from my closet. My tastes changed and I just didn't feel good in them. I have thyroid issues and for the last 30 years my weight has fluctuated. I just turned 60 and have finally given myself the permission to be okay with the fact my weight and body will not be what it used to be many years ago. I am tired of beating myself up. It is what it is. And it's perfectly fine.
Great topic! I am 58 and ready to re-look at my style and wardrobe- so this will be perfect for me to follow along with you and your advice for developing a capsule wardrobe!
Now off to my closet to get VERY real with it!!
Ripped jeans NEVER! Never bought them !!! I will be damned if I pay good money for a pair of nasty ripped jeans!!
Another pet peeve of mine- the bedazzled pocket jeans! AAAAAAGH!
Ladies stop trying to look like your teen daughters. That is creepy when I see you out there. HAVE STYLE! Not TEEN QUEEN!!
So bravo, Nikol!!! I am so with you!! 💕💕
When I was a young girl, showing any kind of distress on our jeans meant that we were poor and couldn't afford new ones. My Mother patched our jeans and we only wore them to do chores on the farm. Thank you for your insite.
Couldn’t agree more that jeans are like bathing suits….getting the right garment that is flattering.
Excellent Video. I'm 60 and I will MAKE MYSELF go through my closet this weekend!! I'm guilty of holding on to those things when I was a size smaller thinking I'll lose those 10 pounds that have crept up on me the past 2 years!!! UGH!! 😏(However I never did have the torn jeans) 🤣
Thank you so much for putting this together for us, Nikol! You’ve really motivated me to go through all those unworn pieces of clothing and find them a new home. A women’s shelter helping women who sometimes have to escape their situation with literally the clothes on their back will be so happy to have them. I really appreciate all the knowledge and techniques you so generously share with us.😊
Exactly.. there's people that need those clothes, and if they're just sitting in our robes, they're wasted..move them out and then you can just have stuff you actually wear in there 👍👍
My husband helped me go through my chocked full of clothes closet. Got rid of a lot and more needs to go.
Depends on your lifestyle if your a stay at home mom and just running errands maybe ?? But going out and meeting with people.. I’d skip it going out at night definitely not. I think they look too casual and don’t pull your outfit together this is also coming from someone who struggles with jeans tremendously!! I’m petite 4’10 and a skinny Jean just works for me. 😂
I'm 59! I have several pairs of ripped jeans, I love them! Nobody will ever accuse me of being a fashion plate. I live in jeans, tshirts and sneakers. It's fun watching you ladies that get things right.
Great content. Ready for the capsule discussions. The sizing these days is almost nonexistent. Crazy. One thing I do if I'm not sure, I will wear say a top to work one day...then after the day is done, I know keep or pitch based on how I felt in it.
I *love* my ripped jeans at 61. I lost 120 lbs last year, I feel and look great in them. I'm not working anymore and I wear what I like & what fits! At 30 I couldn't wear these, now I can. I don't have time for "older lady rules" ☺️
I really needed to hear this today! There are at least 5-6 pairs of pants in my closet that I cram myself into, mainly out of guilt. They were expensive and I looked great in them when I bought them. That was years ago. Whereas the idea of parting with them brought grief in the past, I’m looking forward to replacing them with pants that are flattering.
I have a one in one out policy so if you buy something new something has to go. Makes you really know your wardrobe and focus on whether you need what you’re thinking of buying.
I was already over 50 when ripped jeans came out so never were for me. 🤣 But I wear jeans most days. Sweats on days I walk or work around yard or house. 😎✌🏻
I totally get what you are saying! So many fast fashion things I find and like, I feel like I'm too old to wear. I do still wear distressed jeans in a straight cut, as well as a wide leg jean that I love!! I have a pair of camel colored, tie up ankle boots with a lug sole and I absolutely love the trend of wearing the straight jeans rolled up a little to display a little skin or sock and boot. I feel very confident when I wear that style combo. I have ditched the really torn jeans, mostly because, like you, my feet tend to pop out the knee hole and makes an outright large hole! Now that the 90's has slipped back, I purchase boot cut or wide leg jeans from saver's. They are originally from the 90's so have a low cut waist which I really love because I have a pretty low waist. Thank you for always helping us older girls stay beautiful!! .
In general, I do fairly with if I haven't worn a piece for a year, it goes to a friend or donation. As for ripped jeans or not, it doesn't matter one way or another to me. I used to wear them when I was younger. I don't wear them now, but I long ago switched to stretch jeans because they are more comfortable. Also, with ripped jeans, I feel like I'd have to keep my legs shaved, and that ain't happening. Bahaha! 😁
I might stop wearing ripped jeans when I am 60 but I don't have big huge wholes in mine. I do love the look of no holes in dark wash jeans. Those look good to me on just about everyone.
I have always enjoyed purging my closet. I have always had the mindset that if I am not wearing something - especially if I often try it on, only to think, “Nah, I think I will wear this instead” I should stop holding on to it when someone else may enjoy it.” I want to donate things I don’t wear before they go out of style.” So, I do an appraisal about quarterly and for me it’s like the feeling I get after my hygienist cleans my teeth!😁
I am in agreement 100% when it comes to not wearing ripped or heavily distressed jeans. I never liked the look and especially not on an older woman. I myself am older and would not wear them.
Hey, I totally agree with you on the “ripped jeans”. I do have one pair that I may have worn 2-3 time and have had them a while. I’ll admit I’m a jeans/boots/tees/jackets junkie. So my closet is full but very organized. I’m now a young 70yo, 5’5”, 115wt, 36D, 34 hip. The reason I mention this is because only JR. clothes fit me well. Due to Crohn’s disease, and Totalcolectomy/JPouch surgery 12 yrs ago, its hard to keep weight on, therefore there are some larger items in closet that are too big, BUT I will have my daughters and friends come shop my closet once a year which is fun. Sometimes one does not want to get rid of certain jeans, case in point,. I bought a great fitting pair of Limited boot cut jeans when 49yo. Gained weight so they were too small. I gave them to my girlfriend, years ago, and she still wears them. BUT now at my current weight which is here to stay, I could now wear those jeans. Obviously I’m not going to ask her to return. So, sometimes this issue can be a double edged sword. Lol. And I’m delighted she loves them as much as I did.
Also, wanted to let you know I have learned sooo much from you and passed your channel to my daughters and friends. You’re truly a Gem.
I normally don’t like shopping with others, but when I shop for jeans I love going with my sister. She can be the one who goes out and finds more pairs to try on without me having to keep getting redressed. And of course I do the same for her. But yes, jean shopping can be exhausting.👖
I love my jeans, but have never been into the ripped look. They are hard to find jeans that flattering. Yep, get rid of the items that just aren’t working. It’s hard to let go but it’s refreshing… I have three jackets I need to let go but keep saying “maybe someday”. Today’s video gave me permission to get rid of the sentimental clothing. 🙌
It's a style matter. I'm 68, thoroughly bohemian and casual, and still rock ripped boyfriend jeans and even ripped overalls, which my 27-year-old son, who is utterly cool, thinks are "dope." The things I haven't worn are tailored blazers, trousers, blouses, etc. I'm much more into loose and slouchy, even though I could wear a pair skinny jeans, no problem. Always been a lover of Free People, and always will be, with a touch of Sundance thrown in.
I am 51 years old! Yes, I had several pairs of ripped jeans and I just got rid of them last week! Thank you for this article!
I have a beautiful, classic Navy Blue London Fog raincoat that I saved and paid cash for. I know I can't wear it any longer, but when I occasionally look at it, I still feel a sense of accomplishment. It's hard to part with, but I need to find a consignment shop.
I had 3 pairs of Vintage 501 Levis. I thought I was saving them for when I could fit into them again. (Never going to happen)
Just gave 2 pair to my daughter and 1 pair to my son!
I'm 67. Ripped jeans are a staple in my wardrobe!
A big issue is when i lose weight and clothes are big, it is always in the back of my mind, what if I can’t keep the weight off. Another is all the work clothes I like but now I am retired. It is hard to part with them now I have no where to wear them.
Thank you so much for this reminder that we are moving through stages and it’s ok.
Thank you for this. I’m in the process of giving some things up. I don’t want to sell them but just give them to an organization that helps women.
Ripped jeans?? I cannot agree more! And you are so right ....less is more!! 🥰
