I’m a 72 year old who kept cutting my short dark brown hair myself, during the pandemic until it was all white. I’m a “winter” so I’m usually wearing black, white, greys, blues or pinks. People ask me why I don’t wear beiges or oranges. I joke that I am allergic! Strangers tell me that they love my hair but I’m still not used to it! I agree with everything you said. I will not wear heels or any shoe that hurts. If I am uncomfortable in clothes that I try on, I don’t buy them. I have never bought vintage, but that’s something I might try. I just discovered you this month, January 2023. I used to be a makeup artist for Lancôme in Canada until I was replaced by girls in their 20s. I went back to college at 60 and became a family addiction councillor. Big change. Thanks for your videos!

Sheila, there are others out there that are experiencing and have experienced the same sadness. Try to find someone who has been able to successfully cope with the sadness. But don’t stay around the ‘poor me’ people. My sadness was betrayal and divorce. I went to ‘divorce recovery’ groups. There are ‘grief’ groups out there. Find one that works for you. Stay there only as long as you are getting positive help. Maybe one through the internet. I do envy you in that you had someone who loved you. His love and memories are still with you. You don’t have to leave him behind. He still has a place with you in your future. God bless you.

I stopped buying magazines when I was in college. Being a poor college student that was a fashion merchandising major, I had purchased a "special" issue of Vogue for class. Leafing through the magazine I realised that there were 7 articles and the remainder was advertisements. I was stunned to realise that I paid so much money to look at clothing, makeup and jewelry that I couldn't afford.

The thrift store's mission is to assist those who need jobs or have experienced a devastating event (loss of home due to fire) so it's a win-win for me and for our community.

Once in a while this works for me. Turtles and tees are always new for me but jeans are optional. Ironically the best quality and variety of dresses is often thrift. Sweaters, plaid shirts, and never used work out gear, leather shirts and denim coats also are thrift. Full weather coats are new, always. I get treated better by people who have issues with class system and they are also pretty and functional. I buy most shoes new but have some antique classics that I wear always going out that I got from antique stores. It’s cool to be able to wear the real thing in comfort when the fashion is a knock off romantic nostalgia but not the quality and longevity. Rain boots and winter boots are optional. I live on the west coast and have dogs so that is necessary. I found the best pair of rain boots that lasted five years of constant abuse for $4. Laughed while people were walking around in their $200 Hunters with zero need for their function. Was I envious? A little because they are so tall that I could walk across spring creeks with them; and I have not met anyone who actually knows what they are so tall for. Sigh.

I started thrifting back in the early 80s when I was in college because the clothes I was seeing in magazines were only available in NY or LA. At the time the look was kind of retro, peddle pusher, horizontal stripes, etc. which were exactly the tings I was finding at the thrift store. I’d customize by changing out buttons, belts or hems. I can’t count the number of times I was stopped on the street by people asking where I got my clothes. I still shop at thrift stores almost exclusively.

I've been loving a hoarder for 19 years. He calls me the throwaway queen (and a few other choice terms I won't mention here!) We finally agreed the best way to have a continuing relationship is to live close and visit often. We talk and text every day and see each other almost every day. But we cannot live together. And we've acknowledged this for the past 15 of those 19 years. I cherish my clean, uncluttered countertops and organized cupboards and drawers, while he cherishes his junk. You have to be very giving to sustain a relationship like this; he gives in and I give up!

I only want to wear natural fabrics now, as I find them so much more comfortable. In a colder winter climate, a tissue-weight merino wool turtleneck is my go-to base layer. It moderates temperature fluctuations so well. In the summer, linen or cotton are it. With the occasional silk or cashmere piece thrown in, I'm good to go. So I try to buy less and wait for the really good quality pieces to go on sale. No more polyester!

I won't suffer the discomfort/damage to my feet anymore and now I find it a fun challenge to create an outfit wearing a 'comfortable' heel or flats. When my hair started to grey in my 40s, I let it, it's now mostly silver like yours and I get the most compliments. Minimalism is definitely the way and I think in most cases we learn this the older we get! 😀

Love the post, great advice, but there is just one thing I just can't get with. Books. I will always love books -- what they look like (decorate with them), what they smell like, how they feel in your hands. Even what they STAND for -- Curiosity. The Scholarly Life. Erudite people. Thirst for knowledge. Academia, even. Nope. Can't get rid of my books. Love aaaaalllllll the rest of it, though!

My Evergreen rule is whatever I buy has to go with at least 5 other items in my wardrobe. I have a major cull of anything I haven't worn in 5 years and donate them to charity, every couple of years. So far as sales are concerned I only buy what I would have bought anyway. Buying something just because its at reduced price is a waste of money, time and the space it takes up whether in your wardrobe or in your home

So for me, it really resonated about the color palette. I recently had my colors done, and I realized, I had so many colors in my closet that didn't accentuate my good points. I am a neutral, so I can make warm colors work, but I am naturally a Winter color. I also feel best in my bright colors. I am slowly weeding out my warm color palette. No more buying colors that don't look the best on me. Now to tackle all my cookbooks! I have tons of them, and struggle to let go of them. Thanks for all the good tips!

I now have a very curated collection. I bought only one of each category at first. Then decided to I need another blush? Lipstick? (Never only one😂) eyeshadow? I have no more than 4 in each category now except lips. I own 1 powder. 1 mascara. I have streamlined my skincare with the help of my dermatologist. It is so nice to know everything I have works! Drugstores to department stores will take things back. You can probably tell within a couple of days something isn’t working. I save the receipt and put it in the box that way I don’t loose it. Also department stores will give you samples. Never be afraid to be honest if you don’t like a product.

I have been on the journey of pairing back as well. In clothing I started by removing all dresses that were short and not in the category of a midi. I made a promise to myself to use up all skin care products that I bought and now have figured out what works for me. Same with makeup; now I am using more cream based. Many years ago I figured out what I use for nail polish. I keep my nails short; they are either neutral/ natural or short and dark ( my favourite being OPI Linken Park in the Dark; I wear it all year round. I also like Sally Hansen gel winestock) The ladies at the nail salon always joke with me about trying something new. But it works for me. I am a true black clothes, no frills girl. I do have colour for the summer. And use accessories to change up the looks. Where I am having issues is that I have gained weight over the last few menopausal years. And it is hard to let go of classic pieces that you love. I am actively trying to lose some of this weight and then I will be able to wear them. At 57 I am also reassessing how much time my husband and I have to work to pay for something and I would rather use it for an experience.

L-M-N-O-Pause is a defining life chapter in which everything, including body, skin, and lifestyle changes...permanently. It's having to adjust to living in a 'new' older body that is the most difficult thing. It's another life that must be created, another place of self acceptance that has to be explored, then eventually accepted as none of us get younger with time. Now THERE is a place where money can be thrown which can yield unsatisfactory and disheartening results.

I'm currently experimenting with several new facial products to try and figure out what works best for me. I threw out all my old makeup as I'm sure I had aqua eye shows from decades ago and my skin care routine and make up is now new and fresh. I'm having fun with that as I get ready for my day. The game changing thing I did last year was purge everything from my closet that didn't fit, had stains or missing buttons, all my graphic tees (except 2), patterned pieces (except for stripes) that made me look frumpy, things that I just didn't like anymore and outdated shoes. I have been very selective about replacing my key wardrobe pieces and have curated a beautiful classic capsule wardrobe that I absolutely love. I also unified all my hangers, added a shoe rack to organize my remaining shoes and added lighting into my closet. Now, I'm actually excited about choosing an outfit to wear for the day. As far as what I don't buy any more, I rarely buy matchy-matchy things. Whether it's jewelry, home decor, clothing, linens, dishes, or other goods. I've embraced my more eclectic transitional style and love the results. Love from Sunny SoCal, Dawna

It still feels that way.
