The Cardo Packtalk Custom can be used without a subscription. Without a subscription it is a lower cost mesh only unit similar to how the Sena Spider models are mesh only. (Also similar to the Cardo Packtalk Outdoor designed for non motorcycle outdoor activities.) The difference is that the Packtalk Custom can be temporarily upgraded via a subscription to provide additional functionality. If you will be happy with just Mesh intercom and missing a couple other features then the Custom makes a lot of sense. If you really always want the features that require a subscription then getting the Packtalk Neo, Edge or Pro seems to make more sense to me. If you only want or need the subscription features occasionally figure out what works best for you. Personally I am leaning toward upgrading to the Packtalk Edge. My Smartpack battery and USB micro port are failing. Are they still producing the Packtalk Custom?
