  • We discuss the looks and design language of the new BMW 1300GS with none other than its designer, Christian Hahn-Wörnle. In this episode, he explains to us the idea behind the radical change of the GS design and what purpose it serves technically.

      Nope, fashion is a fickle mistress.Had they made this new 1300 as a “ light weight competition bike “ to run along side the 1250 then perhaps,but a replacement for the 1250 this is not.Time will tell, but the trellis frame was part of its signature.And let’s be honest, for the sake of 12 kg’s… come on be honest bmw, it’s a far cheaper bike to produce, and it’s plain for all discerning eyes to see.
      As for the head light…. Yuk

      Except for his inspiration is rubbish. Like my inspiration for putting rubbish bins on the roof of my house. Not all inspiration is good. Hearing his BS is not a gift. We are hearing how he made the GS look like every other Asian bike of the day. Ugly and false marketing on this bike. No center stand, lower pipe, no hand rails, and they charge you for things that were included on the other models.

Just returned from a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee, North Carolina. Could not have enjoyed the ride any better. Now I fully understand why the GS is so popular. New design looks way better and aiming for lower weight seems like the right place to be coming from. Nice to hear some explanations from the actual designer. Especially when he talked about symmetry, and aiming for that but only compromising for practical reasons, function over form. I bet it drives him nuts that he can't make the cylinders directly opposing. Too bad they're not making a new RT yet, I bet the next one will be hot.

  • @mycristi
    @mycristi 10 месяцев назад +1

    Congrats on interviewing the designer himself, he is responsible not only for the ''styling'' but also for the whole packaging and the overall technical negotiation to make a certain style or function possible. It is clear that form follows function and it is tough to make an aesthetic philosophy overcome so many variables but overall the bike seems to look sensibly proportioned and honor the brand identity with the twist to contemporary ''fashionables''...but to make an (almost) perfect motorcycle and fail to position the ''x'' lower wings to make sense or make them distinct from the matrix led....not to look like a ''flying'' sticker...such a pitty man... Can't wait for the next facelift....it is such an easy fix...

    Why is no one asking about the disappearance of the rear light? From a road safety point of view I think they have made a big mistake. Look how many owners are changing the rear light configuration on the S1000XR and the GS. Jesus you spend a ton of money buying the bike and then spend even more on improving the rear light for safety.

It was good to hear the philosophy of how the package and design evolved, some of it being driven by legislation (ie headlamp homologation) Of course that's irrelevant to all the YT desktop designers and engineers who just know THEY would have done it so much better......

So, the rose tinted spectacles are well and truly off for me now regarding new world quality. The Germans taught the world how to build great cars, sadly the Americans taught them to build in obsolescence. • @derache123
      @derache123 10 месяцев назад +1

      Great way of putting it. The GS has always been about function over form, and in this case, they came up with a redesign that didn't need to sacrifice form, which is something that can't be said about past designs. Seasoned adv riders likely have an emotional attachment to the older, more barebones and "rugged" look. But for those of us who come from a non-adv background, the new bike looks better in every way.

    • @bens5186
      @bens5186 10 месяцев назад

      So in short they have managed to attract people that will not buy one while pushing many away that would have considered an upgrade for their 1250? Not exactly a good business plan.

      @@bens5186 BMW is indeed trying to expand the GS customer base beyond the existing group of GS buyers. If non-adv folks are attracted to the 1300 GS, why would they not buy one? I already have a deposit down on one myself.
      And isn't adv riding primarily about function over form anyway? Even if you consider the 1300 uglier, functionally, the 1300 is better than the 1250 in pretty much every way.

    • @bens5186
      @bens5186 10 месяцев назад

      @@derache123 The people commenting that like the new look are by their own admission “not adventure riders” they are mostly from sport bike backgrounds.
      I honestly do not see ANYTHING better from a functionality point of view. The Air filter is harder to change, requiring crash bar removal possibly. This will be a treat when de-watering the bike after a drop in a water crossing.
      The headlight will be harder to cover with stone protection.
      The fuel capacity is down on this model so will likely be down even more on the adventure variant (when/if it arrives).
      The bike looks a lot harder to fit soft luggage to. (100% required for dirt).
      Unless you are only riding this to the local cafe to sip lattes it appears to be a downgrade in every way with exception to the quick-shifter which apparently works well now.
      Time will tell when these start rolling around in the BMW enduro safari’s. I honestly think they have lost their way…

    • @derache123
      @derache123 10 месяцев назад +3

      @@bens5186 Yes, you're absolutely right. I am a sport touring rider. I have no plans to ride on the dirt, and I have put a deposit down on a 1300 GS.
      The reality is that the vast majority of GSs are used as sport touring bikes, or I suppose as you put it, "riding to the local cafes to sip lattes" if the local cafe is the Sierra Nevadas, and the lattes are the mountain passes. And for sport touring riding, the new GS is absolutely better than the old one.
      I don't care about changing the air filter after a water crossing, nor do I care about mounting soft luggage. I do however care about a smoother and more powerful engine/gearbox, lighter weight, and an electrically adjustable windscreen, just like I have on my RT. If I ever do decide to pursue adv riding, I'll do so on a middleweight such as an F 900 GS or Aprilia Tuono. That is the direction the offroad-oriented adv market is headed, and BMW knows it.

    So… will the 30l version have a better looking front end? a simple outer ring on the front light would have looked a lot better than the X. The other thing a ring DRT would have done is allow simple elegant perspex covers to be made to protect the package. Its needlessly large and complex. I guess you can just 3D print a cover and black out the stupid X configuration.
    I am sure someone will come up with an aftermarket replacement headlight that will use the same amount of space with a spotlight built in.

    The video could have been a lot shorter had the designer been direct and stated that BMW wanted to cut corners regarding cost, appeal to a broader market, and ultimately make even more money,

      Nothing wrong with making money. They deserve it, it's a great bike. Fact is price has only gone up 3.6% per year over my 1200 LC bike fully loaded and the 1300 has many more features. So in reality the 1300 is quite a good value at least in comparison to the 1200 LC.

      @@derache123I guess not. It is just business as usual. Now the bikes from all manufacturers look cheap. In the past, BMW was a standout as far as fit & finish. Now they are just part of the pack.

    I like the weight reduction but it's still too heavy and expensive.
    Besides, I disagree with many design choices. The headlight and all the front are awful and over complicated. The tail is too short and misses a rack, but then needs a stick to hold the plate. The exhaust could have been integrated so that it doesn't take space from the cases or gets damaged if it falls. The turning lights in the handguards could have been a good idea if done in a more robust way. They could make a gas tank like KTM, low and resistant against falls, so that we wouldn't need bars that add a few kg. Etc.
    I'm sure it's a great bike to ride, but I'd feel out of love if I saw it in my garage.

    me likey.. Always appreciated the big rhynos, but never wanted one for myself..
    Too tall, too bulky, and my frame is a bit too low.. just like the boxer engine :D.
    But now... I can really say that I'm eyeing one for next year, it's that nice.. And being so much more compact, I can't wait to test one for next season.

      No it isn't. Bmw has a continuous design agenda, to be able to continuously intraduce new models and maintain their market share.

      yeap ducati has been eating at their marketshare and has a much more desireable age demographic that BMW wants a piece of. However some of us old farts like the cushy ride of the old GS. Hope that hasn't changed much.

    I’m surprised no-one has noticed that the front end is significantly lower - meaning for 1250 levels of weather protection (not on the Trophy) BMW has had to include a ton of clear plastic winglets. It just looks like an afterthought, and the large square plastic block containing the dash, adaptive cruise and headlight now sticks up at the front of the bike like a very sore thumb. It’s a design mess, looks visually unbalanced and makes it looks like an almost naked bike. The rear of the bike, with the sharply upswept panels, just doesn’t work for a GS. It’s ugly and bloated even though it is physically shorter (I’ve seen one in person and it is NOT smaller, just the fairings are lower and narrower).
