that missing arm zombie scene is masterfully done, legit thought those were other survivors
At first glance I thought those were gang members lol
Not so fun fact:
He was an amputee.
@@johnnymnemonic69 even less fun fact: when you have no insurance in the US, the only surgeon you can afford is a zombie.
@@johnnymnemonic69 The legless parkour zombie that attacked Bart in the parking garage was a stuntman that was really missing his legs too.
Dude I know same
Don’t care what anyone says but this movie is by far my favorite zombie film because of how dark and the impending doom u feel while watching.
And the ending
Fasho Sal.
Running zombies are always more intimidating than walking zombies. It's in our nature to be more startled by seeing something close to your size or greater than coming at you quickly. Also their crazed eyes look more menacing. It's intense because unlike the walking zombies, running zombies make survivors have to react and think much faster than those going up against walking zombies.
@@Kehwanna walking zombies are fcking trash. Please, banish them from newer cinema forever!

they're called liminal spaces
I work security and once was sent to the local stadium for a night shift and I had to do a lap of the entire stadium. It seats 60,000 and here is me walking on the field and halls all alone.
The part when they're walking through the mall and "Don't worry, be happy" is playing on the mall's speakers gives me chills. Especially when they walk past the diner and you see just how empty the mall is. The food court, which is probably usually busy, is just empty. Like it's so calm inside the mall, but just right outside the world is in shambles. Mass panic and hysteria. People eating each other. Dead corpses getting up and running down their neighbors. All the while, "Don't worry, be happy" plays softly throughout an empty, desolate, shopping mall, dead center of all the chaos occurring right outside. It's an eerie, chilling, yet oddly satisfying thought.
What's funny is that most malls in the U.S are pretty much empty and on their way out from our lives. Almost two decades ago they were still largely popular, crowded, and full of business. Now most of them are what is called "dead malls"--a mall that is open, but most of the mall is vacant and absent of sufficient crowds. I live in the city, so I rarely ever had a need for a mall, but I know a lot of suburbs are (perhaps temporarily) impacted whenever a mall closes down. So basically, malls now days would be terrible places to seek shelter from zombies due to the lack of available stores to survive from.
@@Kehwannayour so right. The malls near where I live have hardly any people in them. And those who go just want to buy materialistic products. I think that’s the point of George Romero’s Dawn of the dead, to highlight how people have become literally brain dead when it comes to shopping in malls
@@Kehwanna A couple years ago I went to a mall in the city just for old times, it was pretty damn empty. A large section was abandonded and they just had stores upstairs in a small part. It was so strange, but kinda nice haha.

When it comes to zombie films, I personally prefer the fast zombies or mutated ones over the conventional walking kind. Seeing a raged dead body or mutated abomination running toward you is a terrifying thought.
@Ganyu Simp That absolutely would be my preference too. I'd hope they'd rot away pretty quickly as well, rather than them live to a year or long enough to make a TV series off of.
HEAVY on the raged dead body. It's things like this that make a good zombie movie, once you don't fear the dead they lose all their charm. This movie is among the greats along with 28 days later (infected) because, in this movie they are literal corpses running at you with homicidal aggression. The thought of existing in this world is truly the stuff of nightmares.
I used to think like that.
Shit, have you seen Day of the Dead (2008)? Id hate to deal with zombies climbing the walls like Spider-Man to get ya.
I honestly think it's realistic for a freshly-turned zombie to be running. Their bodies haven't started decaying yet, so by all-means they should be able to sprint and have enough strength to pin somebody down and bite into them, hold a door open, move something out of the way, etc. But a rotten zombie should just be walking/shuffling around.
The way those two zombies just casually stroll out from behind the building. 😂
FR I thought those were people

The armless asian zombie was minding his own business until he saw them and was like… OMG fooooood!!!
That was scary
He legit looked like he was alive and casually walked up to the parking lot and then turned and saw everyone
@@KRobinson-ko1neIt implies that fresh zombies still have a bit of humanity
The designs for the zombies feel more realistic than other zombie media. They actually look like they were once people rather than ripped apart pieces of flesh that was still attached.
Apparently, the SFX team had access to alot of grisly forensic photographs, and worked hard to recreate them. I admire the dedication, but it's not a job I'd have the stomach for.
By far the greatest zombie movie, along with 28 days and 28 weeks later.
That's because they are "fresh" zombies... wait for a year zombie
@@John_Smith_DumfuggThe behind the scenes mentioned they had three types of zombies:
1. fresh zombies for the early days of the outbreak
2. Dried blood for a few weeks into the outbreak
3. Rotten flesh by the final act of the movie which was a month into the outbreak
What i love about this movie is the details, when ever Kenneth meets the nurse you can stil hear the sirens far away, and that indictees that they are still people alive and the system is still somehow trying to hold on, by that I mean it bring some kind of hope,
but later in the movie there are no more sirens and then you know, there is no help coming, you are by your own.
And further more you can see the details in the officers radio has been ripped out, sure he was in combat with the undead close combat action
Never noticed his radio was ripped off, great attention to detail.
I always wonder how Kenneth got seperated with his colleagues or for worse, the precinct he's working with didn't manage to rally up the remaining police force like the LAPD somewhat did in the bonus movie.
In the what? bonus movie?@@sweetballs4742
You can hear fighter or maybe a passenger plane too when they were in the small tunnel. There would probably be nowhere to land safely eventually
When they are in the mall a few scenes later. They are watching tv and interviewing a general and you see injured people coming off a military truck. The mall survivors also see a helicopter fly overhead but by the next morning society appears to have collapsed.
This is the movie that gave me nightmares when I was a kid. I became terrified of Zombies, Cemeteries, and Johnny Cash. It ultimately led to my obsession with the Zombie Genre all together. It is my favorite Horror Genre by far.
Same, dude. Same.
I still have nightmares sometimes 😆
Outrunning these zombies would suck, they basically sprint and don't get tired

this movie did a great way of damn near all of the story telling it did
"the roads thick with those motherfuckers"
"how do you know?"
"we just tried"
"back when there was 8 out of us"
makes you wonder how it went for the group before they met the woman and the cop; did they SEE their freinds get eaten and turn? did they simply get seperated and assume the worst?
the way the malls abadoned, not a large group of survivors inside it, its empty; the quiet music playing over the speakers is the only other sound: it all happened too quickly for any other groups to make it as far as the mall
everything was set up for customers as usual but then the chaos happened and now its eerie and....haunting
Running zombies vs walking zombies, realistically it would be Both! A fresh zombie would be able to sprint, but as time progressed the zombie would slow down to a quick shamble, after all the joints and bones are being worn down more than usual do to the zombies reckless relentless behavior.
It's the reason why it was stupid for them to leave the mall. The zombies were pretty much decaying by the end. They should have gave it a couple more weeks to let them get extremely weak.
Imagine having a person that screms in a situation like this
All women
For me, the armless zombie is the most scary of the movie hahaha
He does leave a lasting impression.
Definitely. It looked like he was a survivor until he turns around and you see he's clearly not.
Because of how it was shot and the angle they put the actor in so viewers get lured into thinking it's just a regular guy. Then he turns and you can see his missing bitten off arm. It's a simple yet perfect execution of shock
Nah l, the fat lady in the wheelbarrow or the little kid at the beginning.
Puede verse claramente que el zombie asiático sin brazo fue infectado recientemente y probablemente algún zombie le mordió el brazo y se lo arrancó de cuajo
I forgot how much they gloss over why exactly they go to the mall in the first place. He says "we're going to the mall", they walk up like a 10 ft embankment, and BAM there's the mall.
It does seem like they just liked the idea of a mall, survivors, zombies, and an escape boat. Like you, I love the movie regardless, but yes, I absolutely see your point.
Zombie daughter randomly missing skin around her jaw? Sure! Good morning, we got a sudden outbreak! Can we have the usual apocalyptic bad drivers? Sure, here are the keys! Does the virus take hours or seconds to transform someone into a zombie? It depends on the intensity of the situation! Alright everyone, we got a script! Let's roll!
It reminds me of Cloverfield.
We have a first person view of a party, New York City, and....and...a GIANT MONSTER! And now we have a movie.
@@Kehwanna It's definitely a pacing thing like you said. 100 minute movie with 20 minutes setup, 60 minutes in the mall, and 20 minutes of climax. It's admirably efficient, but they definitely needed another couple of minutes on how and why they're at the mall.
@dimlightbulb10 LMAO
Yeah they're already at the mall no helicopter needed.
2:27 “we’re going to the mall”
Best time is during a zombie apocalypse

Well Kenneth (the policeman) and Ana (the nurse) are trying to go in Fort Pastor but as stated by Michael (the guy with a crowbar and a former TV seller), they cannot go there since they tried (when they are still eight of them) which it's easily predicted/imply here that there's thousands of zombies in the way.
Not to mention, Fort Pastor is probably getting attacked by alots of them zombies every second already during this time, that's why we see a military helicopter that are probably came there and flying pass the mall a few days later.
This movie when I was younger used to scare the shit out of me when I was in middle school I watched it for the 1st time and now it’s my fav zombie movie
Same here
No lie I was too. And cause of this movie I pray none like this happens in real life or else we fucked
I was on a car trip with my older cousins once and I wanted nothing to do with this movie, of course being the youngest I didn't get a say in anything so I had to close my eyes and block my ears the entire time. Years later I caught it on AMC had a memory click and this got me into watching these types of movies, I even went back and watched the original and this back to back, some of my favorite movies.
that one zombie missing an arm was terrifying, just seemed normal till he turned and you can see; "yup that ain't a person.", plus dude booked it from the other side of the building to them in 10 seconds. You ain't outrunning that.
One of the tricks the film used was to hire actual amputees as zombies missing limps. It saved money on having to do any FX work in post to remove limbs.
Staggering zombies would probably be easy to deal with, but these running ones would be a nightmare
Started rewatching all my zombie movies again, and working on my cardio to prepare for the inevitable.
Two types possible and both run, you right.
Can't forget the double tap
Got me f up stocking up on everything! Lots of boose to make cocktails ammo for sure and a bunch of supressors. See that's where they messed up if I got into the gun store I'd take my time once everything sure and I'd start modifying the weapons to make them more reliable put optics bayonets Incase. Extended shotgun tube for more capacity put supressors on rifles etc. And before leaving the gun store I'd have everyone with suppressed rifles start picking as many as we can before extracting
These were always the scariest zombies to me, bc they aren’t stupidly slow
3:06 I remember being absolutely horrified during this part when I first watched it years ago.
Why aren't zombie movies ( or movies in general) anywhere near this good anymore?
some companies have different writer, budgets, directors/producers wanted something else, people focusing on character drama instead of the reason behind the story: ie zombies.
Best first 10 minutes of any horror film. Hands down AWESOME!

Movie is a masterpiece but still dont understand how a zombie can maintain maximum levels of energy without eating for days on end that seems to be the only flaw in these high energy zombies
If all the movies about zombies considered reality, they should be like 28 Days Later, that all zombies died of hunger.
@@RobertaRSantos agreed
Because these are the Supernatural kind.
They don't follow the "scientific" approach like those from 28 Days Later.
One theory could be that when people turn to zombies an animalistic demonic-like consciousness takes over the body.
Gaining traits like feeding off Solar Energy like Superman does or something similar.. They only bite to spread their virus and consume flesh on occasion as an animalistic trait but don't really need to..
Austin- Ya do sorta make a Good Point. But remember that Zombies, (These Zombies in This Movie) are Undead. They dont NEED Food, They Just Eat an are hungry by the Most basic and Most Primal Instincts. Remember ONLY the Zombie's brain is working and its working in a VERY SAVAGE and BRUTAL PRIMAL State. NOTHING else in em is working. Heart's, Lung's, Liver's, Stomach's... None of that is working. These Zombies cant starve to death. As they are allready dead. and thats why they can just keep on running without stopping. As they dont need to take a Breath and/or catch their breath. Their lungs are not working...

Pretty convenient they happened to arrive at the mall just ahead of the first zombies. Of course that begs the question: if the mall was still deserted when they got there, how did the maintenance men and security guard get infected???
Because remember when In the intro the head of the CDC spokesperson was asked "if the virus was airborne?" He had that look of terror of not knowing if it was. Maybe 🤔
@@SnipePerfect well... There's some zombies in the mall parking lot (which is also the same place where Bart also get bitten) mentioned indirectly by CJ when he spot the janitor in the fountain. Why is the mall empty, anyway? Everyone stayed home or went home that day and they locked up? Figures some people would have shown up early in the morning to work, not knowing about the zombies. Of course, once they heard news about the zombies most people probably would have other places they'd want to be. Like getting to their families or getting to an official "secure" location. So maybe they left before they learned travel was impossible by normal means.
Still seems pretty empty for a place that employs hundreds of people. Filled with supplies, too. But most people don't realize that it's secure with walkable doors. Most shopping malls are probably filled with zombies.
It was 6am. Mall was closed. There was probably a Skelton crew of janitors and security guards working the from the night before. But, most people aren’t going shopping/to work during the apocalypse.

They never explain the virus or why the zombies turn, medically speaking. The rules like every other zombie film is to remove and destroy the brain. The brain can null out any kind of pain or damage if it is attacked under certain conditions in the living (cocaine can do this or good ol’ adrenaline), but in living beings you will eventually bleed out, pass out and die. If he shot the zombie, and the bullet hit/severed the spinal cord it could have stopped it.
But hey it’s a movie. Grab the popcorn and enjoy the ride.

The armless zombie is korean?
Or chinese? Or japanese?
The "Armless Zombies" is a term primarily associated with Chinese folklore and mythology, particularly in relation to Jiangshi, which are reanimated corpses. They are often depicted as hopping creatures with outstretched arms because their rigor mortis makes it difficult for them to bend their limbs. While similar concepts exist in Korean and Japanese folklore, the term "Armless Zombies" specifically refers to the Chinese tradition.
My preference is for slow zombies, as they seem more "inhuman" in their actions and behaviour.

But, you're ultimately right. I've admittedly never seen the original. Not that I'm opposed to it or anything. I'd like to check it out one day to compare.
Even Romero liked it. The only thing Romero criticized was the running zombies and they had too many characters surviving in the mall. Not enough screen time for character depth.
Never understood the whole RUNNING zombie thing. Never made sense. You shouldn't be able to actually have MORE energy DEAD than you did when you were ALIVE. George Romero is spinning in his grave...

As we get further into the film, yeah, it seems a bit silly. But I'm completely willing to overlook that because it's a damn-good movie.
