CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When a far-fetched escape plan is suggested, CJ (Michael Kelly) goes on a cynical monologue about how foolish the plan is… and then he jumps on board.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The feature-film debut of director Zack Snyder, Dawn of the Dead is a modern retelling of George Romero's 1978 horror classic, which was actually the second film in a trilogy that began with Night of the Living Dead and concluded with Day of the Dead. Sarah Polley and Ving Rhames star as two of the last remaining people on an earth that has been ravaged by flesh-eating zombies. After escaping to a shopping mall with a handful of other survivors, they decide that they only way to truly elude the approaching throng of undead is to somehow make their way to an island that is supposedly zombie-free. Jake Weber and Mekhi Phifer also star.

This is actually pretty deep.. remember earlier in the film CJ was reading a magazine article about how trust is the most important thing in developing a relationship. In the very beginning of the film Cj was very untrusting, he locked everyone up and took all their guns. Then in this scene he basically points out how stupid their idea is yet he says he's "in" because he's showing a level of trust and loyalty to his group. And at the very end of the film he kills him self in order to save the others. It was a full character transformation of being the most selfish dude to becoming the most charitable dude.
Nice analysis, one of the reasons he is my favorite character in the movie his shift from being an asshole to a trustworthy asset in the group definitely worked out. But he didn't necessarily killed himself to save the others it should be noted that the doors were jammed so that bus became his grave. Despite that it did buy them time for the others to escape to the boat.
Oh yeah I forgot about that good point but I agree he definitely became my favorite character.. overalll fantastic writing for a zombie film
I just commented saying the same thing, only you said it much better.
For me , he just have no option lol.
In reality he wasn't a bad guy at all, he was just scared..
I love how the writer, a damn fine one at that, turned CJ around and made him a good person and asset to the group.
Yeah. It's pretty smart writing on James Gunn's part to change our expectations of characters.
He's one of the very few best character developments I have seen in movies.
i hated when cj died.
@@RicoX-17 indeed he gives a really good character arc, turns a bad person into a good one with all the right moves, yondu's character Arc in GOTG has to be one of my favourite ones.
James Gunn wrote the script, of course! It was Scott Frank and Michael Tolkin who add some layer in it!
"Because I realized there are worse things than death, and one of them is sitting here waiting to die." Truer words have never been spoken.
+fighter5583 Yeah. (2:06)
Totally agree
Examples: Torture and being left to starve, also slavery those are more worse fates.
They left and lasted about 40 min on the outside. I'd have taken my chances waiting until we were low on supplies..
I agree. They were not doing so bad in there. But then again its a movie.
CJ, a badass Daryl before there was any Daryl.
and now he works for F.U. president of the United States.
nah C.J is more Negans right hand man Simon from walking dead season 7 lol.
Mr. Tey CJ looks like Kenny from TWD Game
Blitz7094 is say that CJ was more like Myrlle Dixon was during the beginning but is more like Daryl by the time the movie is over
Blitz7094 yeah i actually thought it was his actor when i first saw this lol
favorite character is CJ hands down!
Pyro Guy for me it’s a three way tie between CJ, Kenneth, and Anna
Beemer Guy21 yeah man
CJ is my man!!
Mine between him and Norma. Let's give credit to the old woman, she saved a large group of people and died protecting the group when she discovered the Russian lady as a zombie.
He's the most badass character.
"Yeah, we have to pick up Andy, he's part of the group"
Damn, it's so sad how they became friends over nothing but whiteboards and markers but Andy still died in the end
Have you seen the 15 minute bonus material on the Dawn of the DVD that's basically Andy's video diary starting from the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse leading up to his eventual turning? It's available on RUclips too and it makes the whole thing even more tragic.
Well all of them pretty much died in the end anyways
Kenneth needed a brother after he lost his and I think maybe he was a soldier. MAYBE. I caught that vibe when they saluted each other after shooting all day.
Because Nicole’s an idiot. If she hadn’t have gone after the dog, things could’ve gone smoother. She indirectly caused the deaths of Tucker, Andy, CJ, ect.
@CharlieSheensTigerBlood
Great catch!
Michael Kelly can play any role. He was great as CJ in Dawn of the Dead and Doug Stamper in House of Cards. I love this movie.
never trust a dude with two first names
@@eddiew2325 lol weird thing to say
I saw him in Law Abiding Citizen and Sopranos.
I think CJ is his Lowkey real tough guy role.
He ended up being half the reason I watched the Jack Ryan series
CJ is the man!!!!! This f*cking a**hole boat! Hahahaha
I want him on my team when the world become apocalypse
He is trevor :v
I think it is safe to say that Steve and CJ were not buds.
I don't understand how the islands are much better than the mall. At least in the mall they have security, a large (if limited) supply of food and water, and even power. They are safe as long as they keep watch and maintain their defenses.
They could have reinforced the shuttles like they planned, but instead use them to lure zombies away from the lot so another group could drive over to get andy and his guns. then come back to the mall where someone is waiting to open the doors. heck they could have even gone on an extended supply run and brought back planting soil and seeds - the roof could have been turned into a farm. they could get water purification supplies, not to mention all the hard material and tools they have available in the mall. Have you ever been to a mall that has a power tool store? I haven't, and I've been to mall of america and some other big ones, HOW CONVENIENT - "lets leave even though we have all this useful stuff."
Leaving the mall was an idiotic move.
You are might maybe
Yeah that could have happened, but, you forgot the fact that the zombies got into the mall when trying to rescue Nicole.
OoogieBoogieDoggie
He was about to die of starvation, he needed food.
***** It didnt require any animal carrying a sandwich. I outlined a perfectly feasible plan to save andy AND maintain their security without sacrificing anyone. No risks involved.
BUT HOW DO YOU SAVE ANDY
that guy CJ is hilarious
First he says _"There's nothing to say."_ Then he won't shut up.
+Christian Prepper More like he was saying there is nothing more to say about those who just died. Not that he had nothing to say.
Eduardo Alvarado Guzman Nice try, but he specifically starts talking about funerals & deaths & then points right at the corpses on the floor & says:
_"Better them then me."_
So he did have something to say about those who just died.
Christian, I think he was talking about the other cops he served with that he ended up burying.
Nick Forbes you're correct. It's called an "anecdotal example". He invokes his personal experience & feeling at past funerals as a comparison to those now dead. Thus, his feeling over _this_ "funeral" is no different then those of the past. He still feels:
_"Better them (those dead on the floor), than me."_
Probably the scene that sold most people on CJ being their favorite character.
I just love how CJ came around. Started as a jerk, but evolved into the right kind of jerk :)
CJ is so funny in this scene. He says that whole dialogue without breaking a sweat. How can he say that whole thing without cracking up? That deserves an applause. (clap-clap)
I saw him in Man of steel and yelled out "CJ!"
Which MOS scene ?
Just curious...
@@kartikadewi3270He plays Lombard another reporter for the Daily Planet. He was a main supporting character though he definitely looks different in that than in here to where you honestly might not recognize him at first. His actors name is Michael Kelly
28 day, 28 weeks and this one are the best zombie films for me
Same
28 days and weeks are not zombie movies. They were never undead or the dead come back to life they were living people infected with a virus and they never bite or eat people. In fact in 28 weeks later the state that some areas the people starve to death
He's about to get Medievil on their asses
😵😵😵😵
"Play cowboy & jump on the covered wagon" hahahahaha
XD!
Michael is best character from this movie, love how is so prepared for everything, always thinking ahead, keeping positive even in the end scene.
Ben Same here and he actually cares about the others in the group and their safety, what a guy! Michael and CJ are my favorites from the film, they're great.
Cj just made a most sensible statement and then turned stupid from peer pressure. I mean why the heck you have to leave the mall, it is a freaking fortress
CJ looks like Kenny from The Walking Dead game
+Manuel Rivas Except skinnier. Both sacrificed themselves as well.
Right not only appearance but his attitude.
“Omg they killed Kenny. You bastards.”
I love this movie to bits: it's by far the best zombie movie ever! The end credit scenes were perfecto!
Hell, the OPENING credits were perfect. This is pretty much the perfect zombie movie
28 days later is on par, or arguably better.
No....28 days later was sickly-sweet methadone when up against a great zombie movie.......mind you there are only 3.....and two of them are called Dawn of the Dead....@@williamporter2131
hold on a second, is kenneth marsellus wallace?
Haha yeah
Ving Rhames
Damn dude little slow on the pick up
Rest in peace Andy you're a great character.
“I don’t wanna die here. Let’s die on some random island in the post credits instead” 😂
Still one of the best/one of my favorite characters in a zombie movie in my opinion. Started out COMPLETELY dislikable and hated and quickly became one of my favorite characters ever!
"Let me just see if I grasped this concept, ok? You're suggesting that we take some fucking parking shuttles and reinforce them with eluminum siding and then just, head on over to the gun store and while we watch our good friend Andy play some cowboy movie jump on the covered wagon bullshit? Then we're going to drive across a ruined city through a welcome committy of afew hundred thousand canibals, also that we could sail out on to the sunset on this fuckin' assholes boat?"
Yeah
ok, i'm in
Out everybody CJ is the one person who has the most character growth, if not the only one with character growth.
I loved the part at 2:08 when tucker was like "..pretty much yeah" lol Idk why that was funny to me.
desperation is the mother of all shitty plans
And necessity is the mother of all inventions.
Karl Smith - Jesus Christ, Mathews 4:20
Patrick Waters I definitely would’ve made different escape plan. I would’ve used the moving van/truck to get some food to Andy (I’d back the end of the truck to his door), load as much ammunition/weapons as needed, and drive back to the mall with Andy. I would then distribute the weapons/ammunition, load supplies onto the trucks, and use all 3 vehicles to drive out of the city instead of using a boat to get to an island that might have zombies on it
1:09-1:11 = That's Phil Dunphy speaking.. LOL
“His first name is Agent.” Agent Phil Coulson of SHIELD. Also what’s Doc Leonard Samson doing in the Zombie Apocalypse?
Dawn of the Dead would always be my favorite Zombies movie in my kid years. And how terrifying the movie really is.
Best movie. Best remake. Best characters.
But now I realize there are some thing worse than death and one of them is Twitter.
Cj can b a son of a bitch sometimes but I was upset when he died :(
he died a hero
Cj badass dude the best
0:44 - Shoppers and Workers on Black Friday.
They kinda remind me of Michael, Franklin and Trevor in Gita 5
LOL
I thought Steven ogg (trevor's voice actor) acted in this movie as one of the security guard
United States of America nah, kenny from twd season 1 and 2
adrian chavez same
Idk but Trevor is more likely Simon from TWD, Negan's right hand... actually I think its the same dude
C.js character arc in this movie was awesome..nothing's gonna make people man up faster then a zombie apocalypse.
Best character hands down.
2016 and I STILL don't think it's a good idea.
2023 and it is STILL a bad idea.
Definitely NOT a good idea. Never was, never will.
If there was a bow or some wat to tow a line to Andy, they could have ferried him supplies. It also didn't help that Dickless didn't stand guard by the door like he was supposed to.
,All we had to do, was follow the damn train, CJ"
As much as C.J. knows this plan is stupid he still trusted the group. You could say he only did this to not go back in the jail cell but after seeing his buddy die I believe he figured out sitting here in the mall will be his death if he dosnt at least try. Good character development something movies from today can take a hint from.
zack Snyder directed this movie... he is totally awesome
And James Gunn wrote it. It shows with the sharp writing between characters.
@@anthonyrodriguez4905 Who knew both of them would be in superhero territory.
This is one of the few parts I never understand with the movie. You're willing to leave the safety of the mall for a island that will be filled with thousands of zombies?
You have everything you need at a mall and you're going to throw that away for a island?
They could run out of food, i don't think that the food trucks would be coming any time soon, also the zombies could get in, i mean in the middle of the movie there in the garage meaning that they would get in sooner or later, so why stay to get eaten like a happy meal when you could be alive when this is all over with.
Antoine Davis Use the roof as a place to grow food. All you need is to plant soil down and put seeds in it. All found in malls.
You make barricades to all the entrances and make the 2nd floor your main living area. Destroying stairs that lead up so nothing can climb up them. Make ladders and use the air ducts if you need to go down and up.
Have you seen the ending of Dawn of the Dead. What I mean is during the end credits? The islands were flooded with zombies.
+RedX165 but key point.. Wisconsin meaning cold winters so if they didnt have enough food... but if they did survive that long i would have to assume bodies would break down
+RedX165 Stairs are made out of concrete; what's your plan now?
+RedX165 kinda hard to get good soil when outside is filled with marathon running zombies, barricade the entrances will work but eventually they will find a way in. Also how are you planning on destroying stairs and the escalators?
CJ’s redemption is legendary.
5 months after the coronavirus pandemic started, I became like Kenneth. Anyone else can relate too
well for the people who dont agree with there plan, they picked that one because they rather die trying than sit around and wait for there death...and as for food at this point the powers out and food will rot quick in that heat
+Rulerzful true they was they ain't had time to think thoroughly
+Music Taste Good The zombies could get in and kill them, they already found a way into the garage. think about it.
TunDrA VorTx I would’ve reinforced the buses and used them to get out of the city instead of using them to get to the boat, using the buses to drive out of the city gives them the possibility of meeting other possible survivors and forming a convoy like they did in Resident Evil Extinction
91Definite not exactly true since they were in the mall for around a month
The only reason they left the mall was because of nicole its her fault
Definitely the scariest zombie movie ever made! And the fact that the movie starts off with a flaming skull represents to me that it's hell on earth. Those aren't zombies, those are demons inside dead bodies. Why else would they run and make those horrible noises? It's the biblical apocalypse. That's why the "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth" slogan perfects this movie perfectly!
Reliablethreat
You're right. Zack actually confirmed that the bites were supernatural in nature.
^ lol that's actually the opposite. romero's version is the supernatural in nature and zack's version is of disease. zack confirmed that himself.
did you steal that quote from the last dawn of the dead?
@@JayFoxer I don't know if you caught it, but the black preacher who was on tv in this flick made that quote AND it is the same actor who played the black swat team cop from the original dawn of the dead 79. None of this younger generation caught on to that one. I saw the original in the theater back in the day btw, but I have to admit this one is better.
@reliablethreat, that quote was from the original dawn 79 and it was the same actor who said it in dawn 04, he did a cameo appearance as a preacher on tv in this one. You saw it. Also, this is not the scariest one ever made imo, but it is definitely the best one because it has the most action and the suspense is great. Not to mention that the acting is alot better too. This one is the best and it does not get the credit it deserves. The original was rinky dink compared to this one.
My favorite dude has always been the cop! Such a badass, true, wise human being. I'd stand beside him
Every time someone dies… “Better them then me” every single goddamn time thats why i love this movie man
These moments make think about what Andy was doing all the time he wasn't on the roof.
The GothCast There's a cool extra on the DVD that documents his view of things during the movie. I highly recommend. In fact, this movie has the absolute best DVD extras of all time, hands down!
CJ's soul laughs at them XD
The thing is they weren't going to die, at least not for quite some time. They hadn't been there long enough to see if they could die of starvation. They literally were in the greatest possible solitude that anybody could seek out during the apocalypse. Countless stores means food/water to last a lifetime pretty much, and such minimum people to worry about hogging it all to themselves. Plus they had mixed company. Lol they could have carried generations in this mall. The hell would they consider leaving for. I would have been the fucking coward that stayed.
GENERAL ZOD You think they would stay in a mall forever, on some Dead Rising crap, waiting for the military, something like that? They had to take a risk.
Zombies would of found a way in sooner or later. In the original they find a way in somehow.
krypto nite that was because the bikers broke in
In the zombie survival manual book (yes there is one), it concludes that the absolute safest and best place for long term survival would be an oil rig, as these are primarely on deep water but close to the coast, has no "walking access", but would require using a lift or climbing. Would not attract other survivors (less people heading your way = less zombies heading your way). Often has massive quantity of supplies so that oil rig workers could live there for years which they do. Has good radio communication etc.
The manual concludes that a mall would be highly risky, as it would be the first choice destination for people during a zombie apocalypse, and would thus be likely overrunned almost immediately.
I agree. Malls are large structures that are cheaply-built, using mostly prefabricated panels, usually with a utility basement underneath and several large conduits running into them from the outside. They weren't designed for defense and have several ladders affixed to the outsides to facilitate maintenance, a cargo loading dock(s) protected only by roll-up aluminum garage-type doors, and plenty of blind spots inside, only *some* of which were MEANT to be covered by security cameras (all n/f now). A half-dozen humans -- no matter what kind of hardware they are toting or what half-assed barriers they erect -- can't defend any significant portion of a mall for long against a mobile enemy that can operate in darkness as well as it can in the light and is heedless both of individual risk and of its own side's losses.
Micheal Kelly needs to be in more films like this or on the Ghost Recon or Rainbow Six Film
"Ya jackasses!!" - Phil Dunphy
“His first name is Agent.” Agent Phil Coulson of SHIELD. Also what’s Doc Leonard Samson doing in the Zombie Apocalypse?
He went from being one of the most hated characters in the movie to being on of the best in just a few words.
I love the original dawn of the dead and ALL of the Romero's Movies, but I have to say it
This remake has the best party ever saw in a horror movie, these characters are awesome! You can see that James Gunn loves to write movies about a group of characters and not only one protagonist
Doug Stamper!
Island, Dead Island?
Ha!
Angel of Sarcasm they don't live. The island was overrun and they had no fuel.
Dominick Stewart Considering they were in Milwaukee on the edge of Lake Michigan, they probably just crossed to MI and got fucked up.
Steve’s sarcastic thumbs up at the end always kills me 😂
Cj is actually favorite character lol RIP
Ving a zombie movie legend been in like 5 movies
poor Phil Dunphy went mad in the zombie apocalypse.
I just found this clip after several years, and I was scrolling through the comments cuz I was wondering if someone else was thinking the same thing! I knew that was him, I knew it!!!
Cj changed from a bad selfish guy to a hero by sacrificing himself to save the remaining survivors
The best thing was to stay put in the mall that was fortified and stocked with food. I wouldn’t have left unless it was an extreme emergency. Not for restlessness...
Zip tie from hardware and sporting goods would have saved Andy. It was a rough situation.
@2:09 Cj was actually excited to do all this lol
The Black Cop and CJ were my favorite characters and the Yacht Douche too!
CJ & the blk guy cop were the alpha males of this movie.
CJ has one of my favorite character arcs of all time. It's so subtle and great.
If they re-enforced the mall instead of the truck, they might survive somehow.
"Ok...I'm in"
You may have been a jerk earlier, but you're a noble jerk
We wanted zombies, but we got COVID-19.
Now is Ving for that speech in the beginning
Fun fact: At1:36 when Cj was talking. In early takes of that scene. He was cussing so much in his speech, that he almost got cut off and had that whole scene cut.
CJ on the TWD would’ve been badass!
Kenneth is my favorite character on the remake.
This part of the movie has always stuck with me
Cj and Kenneth are the best characters for sure
i would stay at the mall as long as possible when all the resources are gone thats when i would leave
but the plan never work because alot of undead are there on the island
Oh crap, Kenneth is Marcellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction!
Poor Steve. - Scream
i would of waited till supplies were low then leave because who knows maybe the zombie apocalypse would be over
Not necessarily over but maybe if they waited for winter the snow could have slowed the zombies down or even freezed them.
Oh my God. I have a huge crush on CJ.
Okie dokie
Grecia Calderón Makes complete sense considering how he was a douchebag and all.
Grecia Calderón Ew 😂
Grecia Calderón bruh😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Grecia Calderón I actually think Michael is more attractive. He is sweet and I like that about him. In terms of badasses, yeah CJ is pretty awesome.
This is THE scene for this movie. Love it.
This is an underrated movie, The first 45 seconds is top notch acting and delivery by Ving Rhames
one of the BEST zombie movies that i ever watch, even unstil now.
CJ was such a great dude.
Kenneth is the coolest character I think
I would have stayed. I know the mall gets overrun when they begin to leave; but i would have set up shop on the roof.
As they work on their plan, I would be taking boxes of food, water, ammo and any supplies the mall had left and brought them all to the roof. Then locked up and barricade all doors and roof entrances.
When everyone escapes to get to the boat, all the zombies would be after them and I would be laying low, and no zombie would know that I was there.
Steve reminds me of Nick from l4d2, except Nick progressively becomes less selfish and more empathetic towards the other survivors, while Steve was selfish right up until his death
CJNis by far the best character in the movie, with the best arc.
"somebody needs to say something"
me- something
To bad the organ guy can't remember his name right now couldn't say anything because he doesn't believe in God
Cj is like if Trevor from GTA 5 and Daryl Dixon had baby
CJ kinda looks like Henry Cavill in Mission Impossible
I love this movie so much my four favorite characters are CJ and Kenneth Michael Anne.
I remember when I was a kid I woke up during the middle of the night to see this movie playing, I was so scared of this scene I locked myself in the bathroom until morning.
Lady, the bathroom is the most creepy and haunted place of the house. Lol jk
I never thought of it that way. Thats a interesting point!
CJ's speech ..
hahahahahahaha
Zack Snyder should do more movies like this.
James Gunn wrote the script, yeah Zack should write less movies
Zach Snyder also made Army of the Dead and that movie is trash.
People will say how CJ went on some kind of character transformation from the beginning of the film to the end. I disagree, he stayed true to form throughout. In a apocalyptic world the only people you can trust are you and maybe your friends and family. Of course CJ questioned the new group of survivors at the beginning... why should he trust them? Theyre absolute strangers...but yes after time they earned it and he started batting for the team. Seems like CJ was just sticking to his morals from the beginning. His allegiance was to his mall security colleagues...and he couldnt do them dirty by lowering his guard. These zombie shows and movies show that during the times of crisis people do some pretty horrible things to survive, why should CJ just accept these people as his own from the start? Great character.
