Debbie Harry had a very versatile voice and was just an original and a boss. My dad bought me Blondie’s album Eat to the Beat on cassette tape when I was about 8 - I’d never heard anything like that before! One of my favorites is “Dreaming” which is very percussive but also melodic and well, dreamy.

There's definitely a lot more to Blondie than these two songs. They were one of the bands of the old CBGB scene, and one of the early New Wave bands. They also had elements of punk and various other styles. Debbie Harry even did some rapping in the song Rapture, before most people had heard of rap.
I think you'll both dig the song One Way or Another.

Debbie Harry was eager to work with Giorgio Moroder, as she was a Donna Summer fan. Blondie's song Heart of Glass was the band's ode to I Feel Love. The song Call Me was originally call Man Machine. Moroder had most of the music composed already and brought the song to Harry, to write lyrics. She watch some clips from the movie (American Gigolo) and wrote the song. It went on to become Blondies highest charting single.

    • @Swordsfor200Alex
      @Swordsfor200Alex 2 года назад +1

Umm - it was written before the movie American Giglio was released because it was used in the movie soundtrack. You should have stated she was able to view the unedited unfinished movie during her writing so she could get some ideas about the song lyrics. The melody had already been composed 6 months earlier by an Italian composer for Stevie Nicks but she declined because she was too busy with Fleetwood Mac’s schedule. So it was offered to Debbie Harry and history was made creating “Blondie’s” most successful song.

Rapture is going to blow your mind. Debbie Harry was part of the New Wave scene in NYC late 70's early 80s when New Wave & new music genre Hip Hop melded in the underground club scene, both sorta outcasts. She is responsible for helping bring Hip Hop to a wider audience with the song Rapture which features Debbie Harry rapping & legendary DJ Grandmaster Flash. Rapture was the FIRST song to go #1 featuring rap. Basquiat (artist) & Fab 5 Freddy a pioneer in all things Hip Hop are in one of the coolest videos which represents the NY club scene at that time. **Sorry I meant Debbie Harry, don't shoot me. Chill

The reason for Female Friday is to highlight the best and until you include this band, whose history is the very stuff of rock-n-roll, you can't know how their mere survival is as remarkable as the music the recorded. "Heart of Glass" was Blondie's biggest hit and a great song, but, as a synthesizer-drenched disco song, it is very different than all Blondie's other work. They started off as a rough punk band, so they do have some rockers, including some high-charting hits like "One Way or Another" from 1978. They had an excellent drummer that I think Jay would really like, showcased in their 1979 hit "Dreaming" and their 1978 song "Accidents Never Happen." And if you like reggae, they had a 1980 hit with a reggae cover of the Paragons' 1967 "The Tide is High."

    •  2 года назад

When were they a *rough* punk band? They came more from the art-rock side, even though they were (IIRC) regulars at CBGB's… which was also the birthplace (in a way) of the Talking Heads. Another not-punk band. They played support of the Ramones! What the punk scene back then was most of all (or at least in the scene around CBGB's) was *open* to basically everything. As, actually, every "true" musician/artist.

Iconic 70s and 80s new wave pop band Blondie had its first big break in Australia.
In 1977, an apparent accident by Molly Meldrum on Countdown gave the group its first hit single anywhere in the world.
Meldrum was supposed to play Blondie's edgy track, X Offender, but instead played the single's B-side - the much poppier In The Flesh, which promptly went to the top of the charts.

Born in Miami, Florida, Debbie Harry was adopted as an infant and raised in Hawthorne, New Jersey. After attending college, she worked various jobs, including as a secretary (including at the BBC in New York), dancer, and Playboy Bunny, before breaking through in the music industry. Harry co-formed Blondie in 1974 in New York City.
In a 2011 interview, Harry said that "After witnessing Elton John and his tireless efforts against HIV/AIDS", she had been inspired to make philanthropy her top priority. She said, "These things are important to my life now. I have the privilege of being able to get involved, so I do. I applaud people like Elton John, who have used their position to do so much good."[59] Some of Harry's preferred charities include those devoted to fighting cancer and endometriosis.[60]

They had a lot of great hits in the 70's-90's such as Heart Of Glass", "Call Me", "Atomic", "The Tide Is High", “Rapture”, "Picture This", "Hanging On The Telephone", "I'm Gonna Love You Too", "One Way Or Another", "Sunday Girl", "Dreaming", "Island Of Lost Souls", "War Child", "Maria"etc.

also, though it has nothing to do with this comparison, stevie nicks was first asked to record "call me" but she was contractually obligated to her new solo label, modern records, so she had to pass. can you even imagine what that would've sounded like? loool

Blondie came along at a weird time in music history. Disco reigned supreme, but wasn't everyone's cup of tea. Lots of disco haters out there. There was also the punk element happening, especially out of New York, where the band is from. Punk is very decidedly NOT disco, and yet both punk and disco have their origins in NYC. Go figure. Blondie was able to straddle that punk/disco line.
They branched out into other genres at will. Their song "Rapture" gets a lot of credit for making rap music mainstream, and it's an interesting video too. They went reggae with "The Tide is High" which I'm not sure was a successful experiment music-wise, but it became a huge hit for the band. "Dreaming" is a great song; I once heard it described as a drum solo set to music, and it kinda almost is. Hear for yourself. One of my absolute Blondie favorites is "Atomic," a song that makes you want to embrace the night life of 1970s New York City, for sure. A deep cut that is pure, catchy funk is "The Hardest Part." (If you ever want to listen to a whole album by Blondie, my personal favorite is "Eat to the Beat.")
By the way, Debbie Harry (the singer of Blondie) came along before Pat Benatar by a handful of years; they were almost contemporaries, but no way is Debbie Harry trying to sound like Pat Benatar.

Not denigrating the other hip hop founders (Sugarhill, Cold Crush, Spoonie Gee, Treacherous Three, Rammelzee+KRob etc), but Rapture should be included in any well rounded rap collection. Blondie came out of the NYC punk scene in the mid-70's, despite which their first big hit was a disco hit, "Heart of Glass." They moved into a more New Wave/rock sound after "Heart," though.
This song was produced by Giorgio Moroder, who helped Donna Summer rise to fame. At the time, and for many years after, it was the most-played song in the history of radio.
I'm a big Blondie fan, and this is one of my all-time favorites, along with "One Way or Another" and "Atomic." For fun, you could try "Giant Ants from Space" from their first album ("Blondie").
